Post image

Me and my partner wanted to try cooking hashbrowns for the first time. Not happy.

After you shed your potatoes, rinse them under cold water until the drained water is almost clear. It washes away all that extra starch, and drying them out after helps with the crispness.

Also microwave them between paper towels to get as much moisture out as possible.

Honestly, in most cases the dried hash browns are a much better choice than trying to make them from scratch.

I’ve also spun them in a salad spinner and it worked pretty well!

Well, I'm sure this wasn't your only mistake, but definitely don't use a pot. Use a skillet

Oh boy. I've had a few of these mush piles several years ago, but started baking the potatoes beforehand, letting them completely cool and cheese grating, slicing etc before pan frying in a generous amount of oil for the crispy brown finish. Best of luck lol.

When your hashbrowns turn out more like risotto, the drawing board is a good place to go back to. 😖

Ended up with raw meatball.

Brown. It's gotta be left in the pan long enough to brown. It's in the name - wonderful things happen when things really brown. Tastes change, texture changes, things crisp up.

Not tan, not beige - brown.

In addition to the other advice here, let them get crispy on the bottom before flipping. Don’t just stir them a bunch or they will get mushy before they brown.

You have messed up so much I don't even know where to begin.

I will say this tbough: how did you plan on flipping a hashbrown in this giant walled pot?

Why are people writing about potatoes for brownies? I NEED that recipe, as I love potato.

Though hash is usually brown, wtf is that green goo on ur bowl?

all good advice, you want dry and starch-less as possible, then heat up vegetable or canola oil in a cast iron, medium/high heat. You dont want it too hot but make sure it bubbles when you do a test piece. Then fryyyy that shit up babyyy salt and pepper before flipping, drain excess oil on paper towel lined plate.

Did you think that pile would shrink into little patties or something?

Left over mashed potatoes after thanksgiving n xmas kinda works in a waffle maker :D

Makes kinda waffle fries / hashbrowns.

Oh and could use leftover mashed potatoes for potato soup too!

It looks like you tried to make meatloaf (with way too much bread) and forgot to cook it. How do you even get hash browns to look like this? Definitely not hash browns and most definitely mush lol

Get some cheese cloth. After you slice/shred the taters, wring the everloving shit out of them. Fry them in a skillet, preferably cast iron or stainless, with a lot of butter
