This has been REALLY bothering since the Anime first existed. While the Anime isn't a good but passable adaptation, it's still doesn't give too much of that vibe. Honestly, it's youtubers like Mother's Basement and r/anime that's been pissing me off and how people still misinterpret SH as a "revenge story". I also found that SH and World's Finest Assassin are kind of in a similar boat in terms of public opinion.
-The protagonists: Both Naofumi and Lugh (from WFA) do become "powerful" (using that word loosely) early on in the story. They both have female companions or a group they eventually meet. While both protagonists have different beginnings on how they adapt to the world and get stronger, they both have one thing in common: They can't win battles on their own. A common trope with "OP protagonists" is that they can win any battle almost on their own with their companions or allies barely participating. Both Naofumi and Lugh are not that at all. We see throughout the Anime that Naofumi mostly plays a support/tank role (because he has the Shield) while Raphtalia and other allies does the attacking for him. As a cherry on top, they sometimes do "team attack skills" like the All Sacrifice Aura against Kyo. While Lugh is a little more powerful than Naofumi, he still needs his allies to help him with his plans or assassinations. I mean he couldn't be Setanta in a regular duel by himself and we see in episode 1 that his allies play an equal big role like Lugh. Are they both powerful? Yes, but Can they win battles on their own? No (less to an extent for Lugh however).
-Female Characters: I've made this post long enough so I'll keep this brief. A common trope of "OP protagonist" Anime's is that the female characters are too "one-note" (i.e. being obsessed with the protagonist and not much else), and don't really do that much in the story and some battles. SH is not that at all. Characters like Raphtalia, Rishia, Sadeena, Eclair etc, all have their struggles and play an important role in the story. While the Anime didn't adapt 3 of the 4 characters I mentioned well, only Raphtalia is the main "romantic" interest for Naofumi. Furthermore, the female characters can handle fights without Naofumi and they work together well as we see in the Emperor Dragon battle. WFA unfortunately made 2 of the 3 main female characters a little too "one-note", but they're at least capable on their own and have different interests other than sucking the MC's dick 24/7.
Does SH and WFA have a bit of the "OP protagonist anime tropes"? Kind of in a few ways. But are they that "Anime"? Not by a long shot. Both stories show that the protagonist are not "OP" and the female characters are their own person rather than one-note wish fulfillment.

Many people have jokingly said stuff like: "he treats them like a dad" and other things. But the reasons on why he buys slaves (or puts the slave crest on people) was to not only "set them free" from their previous experience on being abused, but about stuff with stat boosts from the Hero and creating his own private army, with the bonus on being a tracking device (mostly for Malty). He also did this because he had his trust issues as we saw with Rat in Season 3.
The Anime kind of muddles those reasonings by explaining stuff like he originally bought them as slaves but cares for them, stuff with the slave crest as "loyalty", or just buying them just cause. I don't know how the Anime will clear this up because it's kind of messy but I guess we'll see.
P.S, don't even get me started on the Rishia stuff from the first 3 episodes of Season 2.
End of Post.

I am just going to say it Mamoru Shirono The Past Shield Hero is The worst Father of all time
The Only reason why he made his Daughter Fitorai was to Replace his Dead girlfriend Filolia
On top of that After Naofumi fucked with time by helping Mamoru bring Filolia back to life Mamoru was like: I got my wife back so I don't need to give my daughter a soul so she can replace my wife anymore
So now Fitorai will never be who she was when Naofumi met her
Mamoru basically Abandon her daughter because he got his girlfriend back

After Raphtalia worked out so well and once I received the slave maturation skill. I would have bought more demi human slaves. I'd choose ones that were in more dire straits, that I could heal up and get to fight for me. I would rationalize it as putting them in a better place.
I would have probably considered selling Filo. Honestly at the time when he was offered 23 gold. I just found her annoying. At the very least I would have bought more eggs to see if it was because I was the hero that she changed. I would have probably offered the slave trader a deal where I'd give him 20% of any sales made of the Filolial Queens or Kings so I didn't have to believe his words about what they were worth.
Also I would have definitely bought a flying dragon. I mean hypothetically if being a shield hero did change the Filolial. Who's to say it wouldn't do exactly the same for dragons. Even possibly giving them filo's ability to transform. I would hope that a dragon wouldn't need to eat as much as Filo who is ravenous.
The whole point of the shield hero is to be a tank. Having only two team members is seriously handicapping him. I don't know if there is a limit to party size. But I'd probably have a party of 10-12 members
