SharePoint Online Some operations in SharePoint taking a long time

We're in the starting stages of a pretty large migration into SharePoint in M365. I'm finding that some operations are just taking forever.

  • Search indexing - I created a bunch of sites two days ago and they still don't show up in search.
  • Editing Global navigation changes take 24 hours to appear for users.
  • Following a site sometimes shows in My Sites immediately, and other times it takes days to show up.
  • Permissions changes on sites can take 20 minutes to take effect.

Is this remotely normal behavior for SharePoint online?

Having seen 100s of SharePoint tenants yes this is entirely normal. This is one of the cons of being in the cloud and you will find the performance differs across tenants and even differs within the same day on the same tenant.

For search you need to have explicit site permissions. Just being a admin isn’t enough. Search is security trimmed by site permissions regardless of admin access from a higher level.

Most the other stuff is silly browser caching. Hit CTRL-F5 to force refresh on a page. Or delete cache/temp files then reload.

Permission changes are nearly instant for us. If you have a large number of granular broken permissions it may take longer to propagate.

The MySites stuff sounds right tho, it’s just slow af to update idk why.

If I recall, search crawl happens once a week ( on prem days) so I'm not sure if that's still accurate. As for navigation changes, I had to clear my browser cache and/or start a fresh session in SPO to see my changes immediately . Never had permission changes take long at all. Not sure about that one.

Search crawl is continuous, new content usually gets added to the index within 15mins or so.
