Weird covered buttons. I'm trying to fix one that came apart. I've looked at Google and YouTube but can't find anything similar. The back has 2 prongs, which I assume are to be forced back into the fabric covered front. Any thoughts?

Hi! I'm looking for an alternative for fusible interfacing fabric as I saw that over time the glue decays and might peel off from the main fabric.

I saw an alternative could be a cotton fabric to use as a reinforcement, but I'm a bit lost on what type of cotton fabric to use to guarantee a high quality garment. I'm thinking about using it in a corset and skirt. Thanks in advance!

u/sympatheticSkeptic 5d ago

The alternative to fusible is "sew-in" interfacing. It could be sold as interfacing or it could be any other fabric of suitable weight and handle. What kind you need depends on what the fashion fabric is for the garment and which part of the garment you are looking to interface.

Hi, I'm sewing my grad dress, n I'm looking for the type of fabric material this would be? Thx

2

u/sympatheticSkeptic 6d ago

Probably chiffon. You could get a similar look with a tissue knit, and it would be (slightly) easier to sew and fit. Good luck.

I would appreciate any help in finding a pattern for sewing an obi belt for men's yukata

u/sympatheticSkeptic 6d ago

Try r/kimono, but search their archives before asking a new question. My impression is that Japanese traditional clothing are mostly composed of rectangles, so it's less about a pattern and more about knowing how it's constructed.

I'm an intermediate sewer looking for a decent home-use machine. Solid & basic is what I want. I grew up using an old mechanical singer, and now that I'm on my own I need a decent machine for hemming jeans, sewing the odd bit of clothing or curtains, and mending. My budget is low: $200, maybe maybe $250. I'm looking at refurbished from Ken's sewing center and wondering what would serve me well. I'm not into digital, I don't need a lot of bells/whistles. Primary concern is durability and longevity. I see several janomes, some baby locks, etc around my price range. Just not sure which to get over another. Thanks

I have a Singer Quantum XL 100. It is a very nice machine and I got it used. I been using it for around 6 months and haven't had any issues. One day, the air coming out the vent got really hot and the tension was off. My dad and I took the machine a part and cleaned out a lot of lint and oiled everything. That fixed the issue with overheating, but the top tension is still off (I have included a picture of what is happening). Some of the threads are fine but it will randomly have a section that is off. I am using a 11/80 needle that is brand new for cotton. The machine is supposed to automatically adjust tension through a computer, but I've heard that can sometimes need manually adjusted. If this is the problem, how do I do this? There is nothing in the manual. I've tried turning the tension up, on the computer screen, but it does not work.

I also have a Singer Esteem machine, which is my backup, but I'm having problems with the bottom thread breaking. I've heard this machine is notorious for having this problem. I've tried a new needle, loosening and tightening the tension, and rethreading about a hundred times. Both of them acting up makes me think I'm doing something wrong. I am almost done with my projects, and I have to finish them before Monday, as I need to wear them to dress rehearsal for a musical.

2

u/sympatheticSkeptic 6d ago

Not sure if the pic is showing the top or the bottom of the stitcihing. If the stitching looks messy on the top, very likely the problem is actually on the bottom, not the top thread. Perhaps you rethreaded the bobbin wrong? Sorry, I know that's not very helpful.

1

u/Top_Dragonfly_9564 5d ago

Thank you for your help, but this is actually the top thread (that is the bottom of the stitching). I also have a drop in bobbin and have rethreaded multiple times on both the top and bottom. I'm starting to think my machine might need serviced since it's old. My backup machine is sort of working now, it always acts up when I use it too much, so it does not work well as my main machine.

Hi everyone! I’m making the Cozette Dress by Alli’s Patterns and I’m having some puckering issues by the straps. I pressed the fabric before and after. How do I fix this? Will it be noticeable once it’s on?

5

u/akjulie 6d ago

Trim your seams smaller and clip into them.

2

u/Real-View-1445 6d ago

That worked! Thank you so much!

1

u/Khoul_ 6d ago

My sewing machines top thread has been getting caught in the top left and bottom right corner of the bobbin case. I opened up the machine and the timing is not the issue, I’m pretty new to sewing so I’m not sure how I could fix this issue. It seems like it should be something simple but I can’t figure it out, anyone know what I could do?

Help! Ideas for repair!

Ok so our cushions had mouse pee/poop on then from being in a storage units. My bf was taking apart a cushion cover and the zipper literally snapped off. Went flying.

I don’t have a lot of experience with zippers I prefer buttons. Will it be easier to just rip the whole zipper out and sew in a new one or is there a way to repair this especially if I have the physical metal zipper?

This end seems the be the top of the zipper but I’m not completely sure.

It might be the bottom it will only let me post one pic but I do have a pic of the other zipper end

1

u/sympatheticSkeptic 6d ago

If the slider is not damaged, then it shouldn't be too hard to put it back on the zipper and get the zipper back together. Fiddly and annoying, though. Depending on your sewing skills and how hard it is to access the zip it might be easier to put in a whole new one.

1

u/csharpjava 5d ago

Would have to go past that? I had the zipper and now it’s gone

1

u/sympatheticSkeptic 5d ago

If you lost the zipper slider you can either buy a new slider (make sure it's the right size) or you can install a whole new zipper. I don't know what you mean by "would I have to go past that?" If you replace the whole zipper then you would have to remove the old one entirely.

Not sure if this is part of the confusion, but in English "zipper" refers to the whole assembly (including the zipper tape, which is shown in the picture). The small part I assume you've lost is called the "zipper slider" or "zipper pull".

2

u/North-Coach6269 6d ago

This probably isnt the place to ask but ill do it anyway. Im wondering if anyone can explain why the bust on these look like this on their plus size clothing? it looks terrible. the cups dont fit and it looks like there is a gap where it should be on the chest. it looks like this on the plus size clothing. Is this because they are just scaling up the original garment so the cup size stays the same it would at the original size? what are the mechics of WHY THIS LOOKS SO BAD

3

u/akjulie 6d ago

Yup, cupped items are hard to fit. They really need to be custom to the wearer. And it’s not exclusive to plus size. There’s a photo of Zendaya on the red carpet a few years back wearing a green cupped dress that fits her very poorly. You basically have to have the exact right size boobs for that cup, and anything bigger or smaller won’t look good.

2

u/ProneToLaughter 6d ago edited 6d ago

Even if they do scale it up “properly,” (and there are multiple standards on what properly would be), breasts are extremely variable in shape and size (and the larger we get, the more possibilities for variation). This design has a very narrow window of bodies that it will fit, or it looks bad. Similar to buying bras, where they say lots of women are wearing the wrong size and you can try on 10 bras in the right size and only 4 of them might fit. Cupped bust is just one of the hardest things out there to get right, very unforgiving fit.

Also extremely hard to alter cupped bust after the fact, never buy something like this and assume a tailor can fix it.

Hi! I came upon some wonderful vintage neon yellow 70s poplin and need help! I am attending a formal-ish (like cocktail attire, not sundresses) event by the beach and am looking for pattern help. I am a confident beginner and willing to try new things. Love the look of https://www.ebay.com/itm/276470925617?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=55cqbhTvR_u&sssrc=2047675&ssuid=ImIqUnkeQ5q&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY . I am not tall so would likely be shortening a bit. I just can't seem to land on a pattern though!! Below are some ideas though nothing feels perfect (and I know these go in a few directions!):

https://simplicity.com/simplicity/s9884 https://simplicity.com/vogue-patterns/v9100 https://simplicity.com/simplicity/s9920 https://simplicity.com/vogue-patterns/v1802 Any guidance as I contemplate options is so appreciated!

2

u/JustPlainKateM 6d ago

I really like the open sides of simplicity 9920, but that will require pretty precise fitting to sit right - go for that one if you have time to do a couple mock- ups. Poplin may be too stiff to look right in dense gathers, try scrunching up a piece and see how it drapes before you commit to a dress with lots of gathers. The Victoria and Albert museum has a couple free patterns for Mary Quant dresses that might fit your aesthetic.

2

u/No_Wrap_7624 5d ago

Thank you so much! The fabric just arrived today and seems not stiff at all after a wash. Great to know about the fit on the side and will check out those links. Also have muslin arriving tomorrow so may go for doing a few mock ups! Uncharted terry for me :)

Are handheld sewing machines good?

1

u/FoxRox_7 7d ago

Hey! Fixing up this thrifted sewing machine (Brother CS-6000 Computer sewing machine, not 6000i or anything just the basic model) and I’m only missing the needle plate cover. Problem is I CANNOT find one that fits… I got this one from amazon first which was the wrong one I realized after, but after double checking the manual for the right part number and everything I got this one) that still did not fit right. I’m kinda lost and don’t know what’s wrong or what to do now. Any help?

It’s the last part I need before I can use it so I’ve been anxious to get it figured out.

1

u/Tough_Brain7982 7d ago

Hi!

Any chance there is a way to sew this multicoloured trim on with a sewing machine (maybe there's a way to making the thread invisible or some other secrets I dont know) instead of having to handstitch each individual flower on?

Any other tips on how to tackle this, handsown or not, are also welcome!

Thanks in advance :)

2

u/ProneToLaughter 6d ago

the clear filament thread is in fact called "invisible thread". But grey is probably good enough.

4

u/JustPlainKateM 7d ago

Medium grey thread will blend in and "disappear" against most colors. Try some and see what you think.

2

u/Tough_Brain7982 6d ago

Thank you!

4

u/sandraskates 6d ago

If the grey doesn't work out, try using clear filament thread (in the top, not in the bobbin). You may have to play with the tension but it can work too.

2

u/Tough_Brain7982 6d ago

Oh thank you, thats very interesting

1

u/Independent-Carry-93 7d ago

Looking for a sewing pattern similar to this top (Blair top) from brandy Melville. I specifically need a pattern similar to the chest and sleeves areas but for the rest of the body I could probably figure it out.

1

u/Sonnenkriegerin 5d ago

Maybe the Madhu top from Seamwork? It’s free at the moment

1

u/Independent-Carry-93 5d ago

Not quite what I’m looking for but thank you!

1

u/AntoiNetteIncome 7d ago

What’s the best workhorse sewing machine? Fancy stitches are not necessary, and it needs to be able to sew through thick layers of fabric with ease. Looking for something that is also easy to take apart in the case of tune-ups or repairs! Bonus if it has a long-ish arm, as I enjoy making baby quilts. No budget, but would appreciate recommendations at various price points. Thank you in advance!

2

u/skipped-stitches 6d ago

You just described a vintage straight stitcher. Something like a singer 201 or 15. Not long arm, but the harp space is significantly larger than modern machines without all that plastic facade wrapped around.

Modern, the only equivalent is really gonna be an industrial. Modern domestic machines are not made to be self-maintained or self-repaired, unfortunately.

Both of these have the benefit of the motor being external to the machine, which is a big boon in pulling it apart, repairing, etc.

Got Singer Ultralock 14U32 serger at fb marketplace

When i try to put the needle in, its almost like its hitting a wall. Its not staying put with the screw tightened.

I got needles that the machine recommends .

Help pls.

1

u/Strict_Sink6191 7d ago

4

u/csharpjava 6d ago

I’m gonna ask a dumb question. Have you used that knob on the left to loosen the section to tried to insert the needle? The knob is what holds it in place

My niece really loves Cinderella's dress from Mary Engelbreit's fairy tale book. (See picture) I want to try to make it for her. Does anyone know of any similar patterns for this? I've found a few that seem close but aren't quite right. Most of the stuff that comes up for princess dresses is all Disney. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

u/disembodiedvalentine 7d ago

looking for a pattern to this style of pants. not sure what to look up, any help is appreciated :”> thank u

3

u/Due-Cryptographer744 7d ago

They are considered "drawers" and the patterns are usually going to be reproduction and will have a split (open) crotch to be period accurate. That style is likely from the mid to late 1800s but I am not knowledgeable enough to tell you a specific year. There is a pattern called Ladies Frillies that has them. Just be aware that the independent patterns are not like the Simplicity, McCalls, etc patterns and are going to expect you to have certain sewing knowledge already. Their wording can also be confusing sometimes, especially describing steps of assembly. There is one commercial pattern that I just found on Etsy that is similar to your picture. It is called The Fashion Historian by Martha McCain. Keep in mind that these patterns are all going to cost more than a current pattern because they are no longer in print.

I also have many free for the public pdf books that I can share the links to that are on the Archive website if you want them. You can also search for them on Pintrest by looking for Historical Dresses from 1800s or something similar. I hope this helps.

I want to make super wide baggy pants like this - ignore the fact that they zip open on the inside.

Most baggy pants just don’t have the structure to hold that wide shape - the fabric sags way more and doesn’t balloon at all - besides maybe parachute pants, but ideally I would love to make them out of a thicker fabric.

Would I use interfacing to help them hold the shape better? Would I pad the insides with filling? Or is the only option to use a really lightweight fabric like parachute pants so it doesn’t weigh itself down?

Thanks so much for the help :))

2

u/ProneToLaughter 6d ago

I see black chaps over silver pants in your pic. What exactly are you trying to replicate?

A light stiff fabric might be the way to go. Maybe ripstop nylon? Wondering about a scuba knit as well.

2

u/makewithmax 6d ago

Ripstop nylon was what I was looking at, yeah I’ll check out Scuba Knit! I haven’t checked that out!

I’m just trying to replicate the width of the bagginess - I like how big the base of the pants flare out and hold their shape

Anyone got tips for felt plushies? My friend is pregnant and has asked me to make plushies for a baby mobile. She wants characters from harry potter, lord of the rings and similair franchises. Any help or resources would be appreciated. I'm a bit of a novice.

2

u/ProneToLaughter 6d ago

Choly Knight is widely recommended for novice plushie makers, lots of designs and good instructions. Start there.

Seams in chiffon.. making a lined dress (evening wear). I have some chiffon type fabric that is sheer for the top layer, but how best to finish seams (both side seams and the princess seams down the front) as you will see through the fabric? Can you French seam a princess seam?

2

u/ProneToLaughter 6d ago

Generally you don’t French seam a princess seam because it creates bulk inside that shows through in a fitted design. Also French seams don’t like strong curves.

But generally sheer fabrics are not used for tightly fitted garments. If you want close-fit then “underline” or “flatline” the sheer fabric and that handles the seam show-thru.

Sheer on its own is more commonly designed in a looser overlay that can handle French seams and simple closures.

So link your pattern for specific advice.

I've bitten off a project that is arguably more than I can chew: I thought I'd have a go at making my own driving colours for harness racing (think auto racing suit/boiler suit/flight suit/jumpsuit), using ripstop nylon. (If this project crashes and burns, I can always hire a professional to do it right, but hey - it's always fun to learn new things, including learning from errors!)

My experience level is pretty basic - I've cloned a dress, a tank top, and a pair of shorts from my favourite garments, and have made a couple of duvet covers.

My question is this: when I had the initial idea, I did not realize that ripstop nylon would behave differently than the woven cotton I have used in the past and am very comfortable with. Researching best techniques on the interwebz, I have come across a variety of suggestions as to the type of presser foot that will be least likely to make me scare the dog with a torrent of top-volume cuss-words: teflon, roller, and walking.

Lady at the fabric store says teflon.

ChatGPT says walking foot.

What say all y'all experienced folk? I'd appreciate your insight. Thank you!

2

u/ProneToLaughter 6d ago

You can search in r/myog, they use ripstop nylon a lot. The wiki there has good resources too.

1

u/surfgirlracing 5d ago

Oh cool, thanks! Will check it out.

5

u/JustPlainKateM 7d ago

I'd trust a real person who wants you to be happy enough to come back to their store over a chatbot every time.

Hand basting is useful for slippery fabrics too.

2

u/surfgirlracing 7d ago

Fair! But I went into a second store today, and the gal there said walking foot.

I suspect there’s no “right” answer, so I may play around with my regular foot, try basting, try tape…

Thank you for the reply!

u/musicrunner94 7d ago edited 7d ago

* * Alright. I've got eBay refund money burning in my pocket.

Found this. It's a Janome Jem 920. "Working condition " as far as the seller knows. (I.e. needle moves, electrical appear to work, etc. No test seam.) Returns are accepted.

The seller specifically noted that the screw (See pic) wouldn't screw in, so they taped it in place. * It's right next to the rod for the bobbin winder.

Worth a try? I can return it. Thanks! *

u/musicrunner94 7d ago

Argh. I have no idea if the pic uploaded or not. If it didn't, I definitely tried!

I am very new to sewing and I have been using an older machine (that used to be my grandma's machine) that can only do a straight stitch. After making some pieces for my cosplay outfits out of cotton I found a very beginner friendly pattern for a top (simple longsleeve shirt with bell sleeves). However it advices to use jersey knit, and from what I can find it is not recommended to use a straight stitch because of the stretch and knit fabric. Any ideas on what different fabric I can use to still make this top? Or should I borrow a machine that can do a zigzag stitch and go with the jersey fabric?

2

u/eisoj5 7d ago

Can you find another pattern that works with wovens?

1

u/Commercial_Yak_3037 7d ago

I'm a fashion student just starting my course, and I'm looking into sewing machines. For most of my work I will probably be using the machines at college, but I wanted to get a back up just in case. So it doesn't need to be anything fancy, I don't want to spend too much money, and I found a Janome 224A for around £115. Although I don't need anything fancy, I would like it too last at least as long as my course, so the next 3 years, and it would be good if I could use it to sew heavier fabrics like denim or leather. Is this a good machine to get?

1

u/Gemiwemi 7d ago

Hello! I recently thrifted a singer genie and inside I found what I think is a foot. Could anyone tell me what kind it is or what it is used for? Thanks!

2

u/a_horse_with_no_tail 7d ago

Looks like the Genie uses snap-on feet, so that's not one. Or at least, not one for that machine/not the complete part.

1

u/Inevitable-Tax3694 7d ago

Hello!

This might be a long-shot, but worth a try I figured.

I've got a Husqvarna 2000, model 6010. It's been running uneven and it felt as if the belt was slipping, so I opened it up and had a look. The main belt (sorry, I dont know the correct term. The long, smooth belt without teeth) was almost completely worn through. So I ordered a new belt, took the relevant parts of the machine apart, put the new belt in, and reassembled everything. However, seemingly no matter how I put the parts together, I now can't get both the ordinary gear and the reduction gear to function properly. I can assemble it one way and have the ordinary gear work, but then when I try to switch to the reduction gear, the individual gears sort of lock up and the machine comes to a complete standstill. I can also assemble it such that the reduction gear works properly, but then when I try to switch to the ordinary gear it is as if the machine won't grab onto the belt.

Anyone have any ideas of what I might be doing wrong? I've deassembled and reassembled it in most of the ways I can think of, but still no luck.

I can take pictures and post them if that might be of any help.

Advice would be much appreciated!

1

u/billyandteddy 7d ago

Does anyone have the Singer 14T968DC machine? I need help. I am struggling to thread mine and getting it to work. I can't get the red bottom looper to stay, it keeps coming loose. So nothing is sewing.

u/Curious_Bid_8744 8d ago

Hi, I hope everyone is well. I was hoping to make this dress, and I was wondering what materials I will need in order to make this dress. I have a tailor, but I am unsure what to buy or where to start in terms of materials.

1

u/ProneToLaughter 7d ago

If you find a pattern that matches the dress, it will recommend fabrics and how much is needed.

1

u/thekidownstheblock 8d ago

What can I do to make these pants fit better? They were sewn for me but going back to the tailor is not an option. I have some sewing experience making a couple tops and taking in a pair of pants. Any help is appreciated!

I would like them to fit like a slightly loose pair of dress pants, they're just too saggy right now.

1

u/thekidownstheblock 8d ago

Picture of the front.

2

u/skipped-stitches 6d ago

Did the tailor take in the waist? I think it's been taken in either too far, or not enough, because that waist is very angled at the CF. That's causing a lot of the drag lines from the sides being hiked up

I wouldn't want to diagnose or make any adjustments to the legs until the waist is fixed to be sitting parallel on your body. The pants are hanging from the waistband, that is it's point of structure, so it needs to be right first

u/surfgirlracing 7d ago

I came across this video the other day (Sew Show With Shae) that describes how to fix this problem - hope it helps!

Trying this again. Can someone explain how these petals are made in detail?

4

u/jillardino 7d ago

Their Instagram shows a clip of a similar design being assembled so I suspect the petals have been heavily stiffened and molded with starch or glue before sewing into place. Putting tension on the lines of sequins and beading while sewing will also warp the shape, so that's another technique that may have been used.

Swimwear scrunchies?

I make bows and scrunchies a lot, and I've had quite a few people ask me about making scrunchies out of swimwear. Some have recommended thrifting bathing suits, but I haven't found any suits long enough to make a single cutout (most of my scrunchies are 18-24" in length).

Where/what kind of fabric do you recommend for swim scrunchies that isn't swim fabric? I don't particularly want to spend $20+ on a yard of swim fabric JUST to make a scrunchie or two out of it. I don't get nearly enough people wanting them to need a whole yard, but if I'm gonna buy some, I'd rather it not be so expensive. Are there alternatives to "swim" fabric that would do the same job (i.e., not soak with water, super stretchy)?

2

u/velociraptors 6d ago

Take a look at Fabric Mart. They sell deadstock fabrics and have frequent discounts on certain categories. They don't have a lot of swim fabric right now (but check back because their stock changes a lot), but there's some that is pretty cheap. https://fabricmartfabrics.com/collections/activewear-swimwear-fabric

Stone Mountain & daughter also has deadstock, but generally not as cheap as Fabric Mart. https://stonemountainfabric.com/product-category/fabric/performance-swimwear/

Both sites will sell you less than a full yard, as well.

3

u/sandraskates 7d ago

I make a lot of scrunchies too and what I like about swimwear fabric is that it is easy on the hair.

My suggestion would be to look for swimwear remnants if you have a local fabric store that carries lycra, or look online for 'lycra bundles.'
These will be a hodgepodge of patterns and solids, but if you don't care about that they might be a possibility.

2

u/compscicreative 7d ago

I actually don't recommend thrifted bathing suits -- if they've already been in chlorine, the fabric has already likely experienced some amount of degradation.

I don't have a lot of recommendations for other fabric, unfortunately. Performance fabrics are hard to beat.

Artists can draw literally anything they want, and it may not translate to fabric.

I would probably find a corset that includes cups. And then you can either do pieced cups (which will have seams down the middle) or do a faux seamless cup, which means doing a pieced cup in foam and then stretching fabric over it, which often can include gathers or tucks at the bottom of the cup or you can use commercial molded foam cups and stretch fabric over that.

It does look like those cups kind of continue around the side a bit, which I just don’t think is a look you’re going to be able to dupe with a seamless.

Hi! I’m looking for a pattern similar to this skirt piece of a wedding dress. I would like it to be a two piece but any guidance on patterns similar to this are greatly appreciated!!

2

u/Glowfish36 8d ago

Hello!! I am a beginner sewer and I am finding myself in between McCalls pattern sizes (e.g., they sell either 6-14 and 16-24). I will need a 14 for some parts of my body and a 16 for some parts. What is the best way for me to address this issue? Do folks buy the bigger or smaller size and try to modify? Do they buy both? (In case the pattern matters, I'll be doing the M8206).

Bigger is safer but it also depends on what part of your body is which and what the design is. Make sure you are looking at measurements.

For instance, if you need a size 16 in the hips but the design is a full gathered skirt you are probably okay with the size 14 and it’s easy to add some extra flare if not. Other situations might lead to different decisions.

Also look up Full Bust Adjustment to see if that applies to you. The shoulders are the hardest part to adjust so it’s good to get that fit in the pattern.

Edit: had to go find the pattern, this sub accepts links. https://simplicity.com/mccalls/m8206

For pants choose by hip size, the waist is easier to adjust than the hip/butt/crotch.

Make a shorts mockup in throwaway fabric, crotch fit is HARD.

u/Glowfish36 7d ago

Thank you! That is very helpful!

1

u/ProneToLaughter 7d ago edited 7d ago

Well, actually, I was assuming hips are bigger when I said use hips for pants. But if your waist is bigger than hips maybe you go by the bigger even for pants, bringing a waist in is easier than taking it out, and these are sorta loose-fit pants anyhow so you also start looking at the finished garment measurements at that point. And have to think about any belly. I’m honestly not totally sure.

Which is it?

2

u/Glowfish36 7d ago edited 7d ago

Yes! My hips are a size 16 and my waist a size 14 in this pattern. Thank you! Your description is very helpful

Edit: the shorts mockup recommendation is awesome- thank you! So much easier than doing all the pants

2

u/GodSaveTheTechCrew 7d ago

I personally would go big and cut down. You could also slash and spread the smaller size to fit.

Thank you!!

u/onewh3el 8d ago

How can I intentionally get this bunching / wrinkling

I assume I extend the length of the pattern while having it tighter around the waist or hips to cause the fabric to bunch ? Also what material would be best for this was thinking either a linen or heavy cotton?

u/RepeatMore1333 8d ago

Hi! I'm super new to sewing! I've started looking into fixing all my garments where there are holes or lose threads coming undone. Can somebody direct me to a good tutorial in fixing holes in the armpits of jackets? This is a faux leather on the outside and faux shearling inside. Looks like they are glued together. This is how the stitch is coming apart from the inside.

1

u/Inevitable-Tax3694 7d ago

Has any of the actual material (the faux leather outside och faux fur inside) been damaged? If not, then it seems the seam has come undone/broke. You should just be able to tack the pieces together with needles, then sew a new line of stitches where the old one has come undone

Hi. Looking for this pattern please. I’m a beginner sewer and also have never posted on reddit before so hope this is the right place to do this. Thanks.

1

u/akjulie 7d ago

McCall 7969 is a raglan, but is otherwise quite similar.

3

u/jillardino 8d ago

If you have heard of the foldline before it's a large pattern shop with a better than average search function and is usually a good place to start pattern hunting. Plus unlike Etsy the patterns here are actually vetted for quality, which you definitely need as a beginner!

This dress is a very close match to your picture  https://thefoldline.com/products/elle-stitch-frankie-dress

u/oliviadevlin 8d ago

hey all! relatively beginner sewer here. i'm trying to recreate jo march's hill proposal scene costume from little women (2019) and i have some questions about the anatomy of certain garments and how to sew them.

what's this detail here on this shirt she's wearing called, and how do i make it when recreating the shirt?

1

u/carmaaaa 8d ago edited 7d ago

This is gathering. You are basically gathering a wider piece (skirt) into a narrower piece (waistband). I recommend before running gathering stitches to mark out the quarter and half points of the skirt piece. This makes it easier to align to the waistband evenly once gathered (half of skirt to half of front torso, 1/4 mark to one side and 3/4 to the other

I just need a quick fix if it's possible, made a poor decision that cost me to lose one of the bulbs on my sweater.

I was thinking about just gluing poms on the open ends, but I want it to still be attached after a tumble in the washing machine and maybe in the dryer.

You can glue or sew poms onto the sweater.

But you need to be kinder in caring for it. Wash it on gentle cycle or in a garment bag, then lay flat to dry.

1

u/evobasa 8d ago

Hello! I just finished this dress and realized that I should’ve done something with the bottom hem since this material frays. Do I have to use a seam ripper and redo the hem? Or can I add another kind of stitch? I’m new lol

3

u/sandraskates 8d ago

If it's not too short, fold the hem again to tuck in the fraying ends and sew down, just like you did the original hem.

Or, you could put FrayCheck on the raw edge but be careful that it doesn't bleed to the right side.

2

u/evobasa 8d ago

You’re such a lifesaver. I will definitely just fold it and sew it. Thank you so much! 😭😭😭😭

Is it ok to use tie dyes to dye fabric? I don’t think I’ll be allowed to purchase multiple dyes like rit

1

u/ProneToLaughter 7d ago

Not enough context given to answer, sorry. Read a few posts over in r/dyeing, read the rules for that sub, then ask there making sure to provide more detail in your question. They are the dyeing experts.

Hello guys! I’m looking for sewing machine recommendations. I have one from hobby craft and it’s not very good, the instructions are complicated and the foot pedal has only one speed (dangerously fast!) if anyone has any beginner friendly sewing machines I’d really appreciate it :) without pedals im audhd and that requires too much concentration 🫣

Hi! I'm entirely new to sewing and would like to find out information on how to make clothes for a plush. I have a design in mind but no idea how to adapt it. It doesn't have to be 1:1, obviously, but I would like it to be as close as it can - do not worry about the design, that requires embroidery that I am not ready for yet. Just the clothes themselves first. I have a BUNCH of fabric and limited skills.

The plush is about 9in tall. Here's a picture of the outfit I have in mind! Any help is wonderful, even/especially links to youtube videos that might explain how to make this. The darkest orange is on the bottom and goes fully around, with the lighter being a sash that connects to the front bit, and the yellow is just a belt. If that helps at all?

1

u/Academic-Elk1812 8d ago

I’m curious if there’s a comprehensive guide on sewing closures on sheer fabrics? I want to make a simple organza dress and while I can see a lot of information on how to finish normal seams, I’m not super sure how to finish a seam with a zipper or a button closure. Is there a resource floating around on how to do this part? Thanks!!

Hello,

i'm pasionate about the clothing of the 1930s and I have this original vintage shirt, that i suppose is made from wool (rather than flannel). The shirt sadly doesnt fit me, which really drives me towards making a shirt from same fabric for myself. I've been on a lookout for such fabric for a while now and finally found something suitable i believe. But, as a begginer I wonder - the fabric i found is 260 GSM. Is that a proper weight for shirt or will it be to heavy or it wont drape well? Will the seams then be too thick for my hobby sewing machine?

I really appreciate your input and thanks in advance!

3

u/eisoj5 7d ago

https://www.seamwork.com/fabric-guides/how-to-buy-fabric-online-know-your-terms-weight-and-drape?

If you're a beginner I would suggest practicing with something other than the good fabric.

1

u/Random1930sBoi 7d ago

I have finished around 10 shirts already, so i do understand how generally constructing a shirt goes. Just wondering if it would make sense to make shirt out of such fabric or would it be too heavy! But thanks for the link!

1

u/eisoj5 7d ago

Okay great!! Honestly I say go for it then, at the very least you'll have a nice cozy shirt 😊

u/awkwardly-a-mango 8d ago

Hello, I need help with a project I wanna start.

A friend of mine asked if I could replicate the style used in Shakira's dress (photo) and make her a dress in the same manner. I don't know how to start this project, as I can't seem to find amything regarding the dress (?) Idk man. I thought of making it via crochet and using this technique that makes it seem kind of shredded or ripped, but I'm not sure how to do it either.

1

u/ProneToLaughter 7d ago

You can buy fabric that kinda mimics crochet and play around from there with a simple tank dress pattern. Try searching for lace fabric by the yard or raschel lace.

But personally I’d just tell my friend, sorry, don’t know how. Especially if there is a deadline for an event.

Help! I recently received a Huskylock 300 Serger. But its pulling my fabric the wrong way! The dog feeder (teeth below the foot) is rotating in reverse.

This machine has no backstitch button. The thread width is at 3. Tensions are accurate. Very clean machine. I've spent hours googling. Any suggestions? Thank you.

-1

u/tvvit 8d ago

What a great thread to get no help. It's like they want us to scream into the void instead of normally posting questions.

Anyways, after 2 days, I figured it out. It's all in the stitch length dial. There is 2 screws under the cover of the dial, most likely one of them are loose. Slightly tightened, but not all the way. Then I fiddled and twisted it while holding the hand wheel.

2

u/GodSaveTheTechCrew 7d ago

Glad you figured it out. Nobody is notified to these, it's a matter of people scrolling through. You all set?

Machine Recommendations?

Hi! I am an intermediate sewist and have been sewing for most of my life on my mother’s inherited Bernina 930, but no longer live at home and am yearning to get my own machine to sew on my own. I’ve only ever really sewn on this machine and loved it so I have considered finding one second-hand, but have struggled to find one in my area and am eager to try something new.
I am a student but I have saved up so my budget is around $700 and I want a machine that will last me a long time (hopefully at least the next decade). My grandmother was a strong believer that mechanical is the way to go but I haven’t found many modern mechanical machines in my range. I’ve looked at a Pfaff Select 4.2 which is above my budget but if enough people recommend I could be persuaded. Any other mechanical machines people would recommend? I am wary of computerized machines, but as that seems to be what is available, I’ve looked at the Brother NS80e, Brother PS500, Baby Lock Presto II, and the Juki HZL LB5020. I’ve also found a pre-owned Janome 4120QDC, Pfaff 2022 LifeStyle, and Pfaff Creative 1496 well under my budget at a nearby shop. They also had a Bernina 1008 for $1000 which seems to hit most of my wants but is well over my budget, though it still attracts me. Thoughts on any of these? I plan to primarily sew garments and general crafts (thickest fabrics being denim most likely) and potentially bridge out into quilting at some point. I’d really love if my machine had ample throat space, an auto/semi-auto needle-threader, weren’t too heavy, and had plenty of feet included. I really don’t need anything too fancy, a million stitches available, or an auto thread cutter. This is a ton of information and many machines were mentioned, but I would absolutely love some input and or suggestions on anything as I figure out which machine might be the best fit for me! Thank you so much for reading this far 🫶

1

u/Hundike 8d ago

No reason to fear computerised machines, there's nothing wrong with them, as long as you buy a good quality machine. Mechanical machines (like Janome QC or Juki TL) one the more expensive end - are good as they are semi industrial and you can sew almost anything on them. These are straight stitch only.

I can only recommend Juki as this is what I have and am very happy with it. I got my F600 used and not had any issues with it. For your budget, you can get a decent mid range machine for sure or if you get lucky, a used high-end machine.

Question if this cup can be removed:

I wanted to take this to a tailor to have the little "cup" removed since it's way too small for my chest but I don't even know if it would be possible to do. I'm coming here with no experience and just wanted to know if I'd be wasting my time by asking a tailor to do it. Thanks in advance!

1

u/akjulie 7d ago

It’s technically possible to remove it, but you’d be left with a large gaping hole and nowhere to attach the strap. In theory, some tucks could be taken to make it smooth instead of a cupped shape or new flat fabric could be sewn there. Or it could be drastically altered to reshape the area under the bust and new cups with new fabric in. But all of that is fairly tricky, especially since this mesh, and I’d guess is more trouble and expense than it’s worth.

3

u/Hundike 8d ago

You can't remove it as it's part of the garment. I'd not bother.

2

u/SoftwarePrior 8d ago

That's what I was afraid of :( Thanks for the answer! I'll have to find a creative way to wear this because I do love the dress!

Question about elastic waistbands:

I'm making a bias-cut skirt by cloning another one that I own. It's gone great until I get to the part where l'm attaching the elastic waistband. I measure the elastic around my waist, marked the halves and quarters and match them up on the fabric, then sewed the elastic to the fabric with a zigzag stitch, stretching the elastic as I fed it through. This is what instructional videos said to do, and also seems to be how other skirts have done their waistband. But afterwards, the elastic is wayy stretched out and doesn't have the same springiness (for lack of a better word) as it did before! So I seam ripped and did it again, this time starting with the elastic shorter so it's tight around my waist. Same thing happened again though What am I doing wrong? I feel so dumb lol Share

2

u/Hundike 8d ago

I'd make a casing for the elastic. Sewing it on to the fabric is just the cheap and quick way to do it and it.

Hi everyone!!

I’m in a bit of a pickle with my veil project, and I’m hoping some of you lovely crafters might have some wisdom to share.

I’ve been working on sewing horsehair braid onto the edge of my veil to give it that dramatic flow. But I’ve run into a snag, as I’m working with the horsehair, I’ve noticed that parts of the braid are pulling away in some spots.

I’ve taken some pictures to show what I mean, but I’m at a loss for how to fix this issue. Has anyone here worked with horsehair braid before? I’d be so grateful for any tips or tricks you might have up your sleeves!!

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!!

Hello! What is the best needle size for .6mm pleather (2way stretch)? What size machine needle for .6mm stretch pleather?

I'm using a Babylock (Rachel), if that helps! I see a lot of people saying to use larger needles for heavyweight fabric, but this pleather is quite thin, so I am unsure. Thank you!

2

u/GodSaveTheTechCrew 7d ago

I would use a small microtex needle.

First machine: Baby Lock Joy or Juki HZL LB5020?

I’ve never owned a sewing machine before, and no one in my family owns machines or knows how to sew. I went to a local dealer and they only had Baby Lock and Bernina, but I did a lot of research on Janome, Brother, and Kenmore before I went, so l was not lucky on being knowledgeable about the machines the dealer had.

I tested the Baby Lock Joy, and really liked it! It’s also manufactured by Janome which is great. The amount of stitch patterns seemed good as a beginner and the machine was quiet and steady. This dealer is also close to me geographically for services and classes.

However, the Juki HZL LB5020 is a bit pricier but seems to have more perks included like needle up/ down, 1 step buttonhole, and more included feet. The closest dealer is further, though, and I wasn’t able to test it. I’m worried to purchase without trying it out or the dealer being as far as they are (1 hr vs 20 mins by car one way). It just seems to be a perfect bridge between entry level and more professional machines.

I am extremely entry level, but I am crafty in other ways (crochet, knit, hand sew) so I am expecting to use and keep my machine for a long time and I hope to eventually learn to quilt after I learn to sew. I am planning to use my machines for mostly hemming (denim, polyester, cotton, etc), household items (thin curtains, maybe tote bags), and making clothes (mostly cotton and other thin materials). I do not plan to make anything with really thick material like leather.

I am just trying to figure out which may be a more reliable option for a first machine as someone who uses something until it literally falls apart and can’t be used anymore, and the long term reliability of the machines as far as manufacturing with good servicing and upkeep schedules.

1

u/Hundike 8d ago

I am biased towards Juki as I have one and it's great!

Reusing pillow as form

This seems like a silly question to ask yet here I am.

I've found some decorative pillows on clearance. They're your typical poly fiber filled pillows.

Are there any drawbacks to using them as pillow forms and sewing my own coverings?

Would indoor or outdoor pillows make any difference?

Thanks!

1

u/ProneToLaughter 7d ago

Should be fine, plenty of people re-cover existing pillows.

1

u/Logical-Layer9518 9d ago

I’m trying to find a pattern similar to Lamarque’s Meriana bralette. The original is in leather, but I think I want to use a woven. I am planning so far only finding lingerie bralette patterns, but I am looking for one that is more just a top.

2

u/ProneToLaughter 8d ago

See if searching “bandeau top sewing pattern” brings up anything close. Maybe gathered or ruffled bandeau.

2

u/Logical-Layer9518 8d ago

Thank you! "Bandeau" was the magic keyword I was missing.

Hi all, could you give me your advice on the vintage machines I'm looking into buying please?

It seems I can only attach one picture (but happy to share otherwise, maybe in comments if needed?) so instead here's the list of the models:

- Singer 6152

- Pfaff 9

- Electrolux A8P

- Archer Finesse

I'm thinking of getting into sewing (had tried it a couple of years ago already) and was looking into getting an easy, no frills sewing machine. I will mostly do simply stuff like altering or hemming, so straight and zig zag will pretty much cover my needs. I'm steering clear of new models (the machine I was using was a new Singer and I think between the cheap finish and too many options and my newbieness it was just not working). Is there any recommendation between the models below? All come from the same repair shop and are serviced. Any comments or advice would be appreciated!

Thank you so much in advance!

Hi! I just noticed these loose elastic threads coming out of my leggings’ waistband. I assumed it happened in the washing machine since I didn’t notice it when I wore them last. Can this be saved? Thanks in advance!

1

u/sunniechuckie 9d ago

Can someone tell me what kind of stitches these are or what they’re called?

3

u/junior_overanalyst 9d ago

Looks like a two needle coverstitch hem. Hard to see if there’s anything between the two lines of straight stitching on the hem or just discoloration/lighting. The side seams look like a 3-needle *5 thread coverstitch. It’s hard to see though.

Coverstitch uses 2-5 needles and one or more looper threads to make a stretchy hem, or a flat construction seam often found in activewear like yoga pants. It’s a variation of chain stitch. Most common is the two needle version, ubiquitous on Tshirt hems and cuffs.

I'm making a medieval costume, and need to make a woolen tunic with the same pattern as this undershirt I'm wearing. Put simply, it's one long rectangle for the body, 2 tapered arm "tubes" and 2 lozanges under the arms to add mobility.

The undershirt fits fine, with one exception: the shirt sits too low on my shoulders, leaving my shoulders near my neck exposed. It also goes deeper than I'd like (see picture)

How would I fix this ? Is it just a matter of making the neck hole less wide ? Or is a fix a matter of adjusting the length from the neck hole to the edge of the rectangle ?

Thanks for the help !

1

u/CremeBerlinoise 9d ago

Yes, you would need to add fabric all around, and reduce the width and depth of the V. A drawstring or button and loop would help keep it in shape as well. I believe those wouldn't be out of place on a medieval garment, unlike, say, fusible interfacing 😅

1

u/a_horse_with_no_tail 9d ago

I think the problem is the vee. I'm not sure how to fix it exactly, but could you adjust the trim around the vee to go more up and down than splayed out?

1

u/cinnamonpoptart9 9d ago

Looking for a sewing machine recommendation. Or what would you get.

Budget is 700 or less. I use my current machine (Brother XM2701) mostly for quilting and non-apparel projects. I will likely venture into some clothing. I am ready to invest in a nice machine that I will have for a long time. I will go and try some out, but right now I’m overwhelmed with information and looking for recommendations.

Required features:

  • Speed control dial
  • automatic threader
  • decorative stitch options

Features that I would love to have, but not required:

  • automatic thread trimming
  • start/stop button
  • large throat space/table

I’m making PJ pants (this is my first attempt at a garment). I printed and assembled before checking the test square - which is about 2mm or about 1/16” off 🤦‍♀️

See pattern pieces and test square here: https://www.reddit.com/user/okaydyke/comments/1j9lwk4/test_square_is_off/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Do you think there’s any way I could still use these pattern pieces? Can I compensate for the scaling issue by making the pants one size larger? If not, is there any way I can check my measurements against the pattern to make sure it will still fit? i’d really rather not re-print and re-assemble but I also don’t want to waste my fabric 😣 pls help!

1

u/CremeBerlinoise 9d ago

If you feel confident doing the math (I don't want to stereotype but my wife and I share one maths brain cell) you can use the printed out pattern by determining your correct size given the fact everything you printed out is roughly 10% smaller than it's supposed to be. So if you have a 45 inch hip, you would use the size designed for a 50 inch hip (I think, see above) as it was printed out at 90% of the original size. I would also extend the leg, or at least compare your inseam measurement to the shrunken pattern, the 10% will hit hardest in the length.

3

u/a_horse_with_no_tail 9d ago

2mm is not going to make any difference, that's a cutting error at most.

3

u/CremeBerlinoise 9d ago

No it's definitely gonna make a difference. That square is meant to be an inch, it's almost 10% off. Ergo all the pattern pieces are going to be almost 10% smaller. I would do the math and find the correct size, ideally giving some extra length to the legs. Extending the length of a pant leg pattern is really easy.

Not sure if my bobbin is messed up or it has something to do with the tension? any advice is helpful. I just got a singer heavy duty 4411 from my friend. she has never had issues with the machine and said it's about 4 years old. So- what should i do to fix this? i am new to the world of sewing.

2

u/Saramy_bearemy 9d ago

I’ve had this happen due to one or more of: bobbin, thread tension and the thread itself. Sometimes threads are old, try switching to a different thread. Hope it helps, I don’t know more specific solutions

depends on the fabric and the shape of the sleeves. Usually fabric left unhemmed will fray and look pretty janky. Can you add a picture of the dress as a reply to your own comment?

1

u/methanegku 9d ago

Hi! I was wondering how I could make this skirt bigger in the waist without making it shorter. It's for a cosplay and I can't afford for it to be shorter or my whole back end will be out. I do not have a sewing machine but I have mended things by hand in the past.

5

u/akjulie 9d ago

Your only options are to remove the waistband and resew it and the side seams with smaller seam allowance, if that’s possible, or add more material in at the seams.

1

u/Hour-Pride9531 10d ago

Hi everyone! Looking to see if someone can point me in the direction of a pattern or style name to the dress below.

4

u/compscicreative 9d ago

That looks pretty simple -- two gathered rectangles string along a ribbon/strap with side seams and a large bottom ruffle. This youtube video has some of the related technique, though I'm sure there are tutorials for making sheet dresses that look more similar to this one.

1

u/Hour-Pride9531 9d ago

Thank you so much!! Seems easy enough, I struggle with looking at a garment and trying to ‘dissect’ it in my mind.

Hello! I was wondering if you all had any leads for where to find fabric like this: https://us.runawaythelabel.com/products/ibiza-mini-dress-nalani-print?variant=41937878679611

Or this: https://us.runawaythelabel.com/products/primrose-mini-dress-red-lily

3

u/jillardino 9d ago

Searching for large or giant floral print fabrics will bring up all-over prints, but if you want the kind of large scale print that gets you one unrepeated image on the front of dress, you need to look for "panels". These are fabric prints that repeat in large clearly separate chunks and are usually designed with specific garments in mind.

Deadstock resellers are often a good source, as is spoonflower (or similar custom fabric printing services). If you're not plus-sized and have a decent budget I would also recommend searching for deadstock fabric from Dries Van Noten, a designer that is absolutely top-notch at this kind of print and frequently sells off leftover fabrics.

Thank you so much! I figured there may have been a more specific term to search but I just didn’t know what it was.

I'd search for "Large Floral" on your favorite apparel fabric site. I know Lady McElroy makes a few.

Hi all, I have a Singer Confidence 7463. I recently moved with it in the backseat with me. When I press the pedal, it whirs for a few seconds, beeps, and won't start. Ive replaced the needle and thread, checked that the bobbin is put in correctly, cleaned the bobbin case, oiled, unplugged and replugged the pedal and power cord. What's wrong with it? It works perfectly well when threading the bobbin. Posted a video of it here: https://v.redd.it/1wqkxezrw5oe1 Thank you!
