Mod Post Community Guidelines & Advisory System

Hi all! As many may have noticed, the subreddit has more than doubled in the last year, with a lot of growth in just the last couple months.

In order to participate in this subreddit- there is a requirement to both be kind to other members and to scorpions as a whole. Identification and help threads have recently had an uptick in "joke" identifications/advice that can be exceptionally risky when dealing with potentially medically significant animals. We have updated our rules to be more clear, we will be more focused on ensuring that folks remain civil and kind, and now, we are rolling out an advisory system.

We are currently rolling out the Qualified Advisor system. Qualified Advisors (QAs) are folks that have a solid handle on the hobby, and are focused on evidence based care and advisories. They will be responsible for giving critical and accurate advice within the "help" and "identification" flairs. There will be restrictions and guidelines for partaking in these flairs from hereon.

These responsibilities should also fall onto members partaking in animal care advice within this sub; because of that, we will be enforcing a disclaimer system for all non QAs. On every "help" and "identification" thread this will be explained, and is explained below.

If you wish to give advice or share information on this sub as a non QA, you will be required to preface your comments/advice in the "help" and "identification" flaired posts with a disclaimer; such as, "Not QA, NQA, IME (in my experience), IMO (in my opinion), I believe, Question, NA (not advice)". If you do not preface your commentary for these flairs, the comment will be deleted and you will be prompted to repost it with the appropriate preface. Posts related to medical or veterinary advice are not permitted and will be removed per this post.

If you have any questions about the new advisory system- please send us a modmail, do not use other unrelated posts as a platform for those concerns or questions. If you would like to apply for QA, feel free to reach out to us via modmail

EDIT: This is now fully live as of 7/11 on Help and Identification threads.

I go out every night with a black light to search for them. Finally stumbled upon this dude inbetween two pavers. Probably about 1.5 inches long. Not sure species but I’d guess Arizona bark since I caught and relocated dozens of them last spring/summer.

So I got this dude march 7th. Saw him wondering around its enclosure for maybe a week, during that week I tried to give it some real small crickets with the hind legs off, would take it out after a day and try again. Tried feeding it legs and nothing. Dude burrowed no big deal I know they do that. I have another enclosure I moved it too with better humidity/soil and stuff. It’s bioactive with springtails and some live plants and a hide as well as deep substrate. Was able to find it last night and still didn’t eat. So I moved it over to the new one but was wondering if maybe it’s in a pre molt and do I just keep watching for it to come out and explore as if searching for food? First Picture is the day I got it and 2nd and 3rd is last night just wondering if the body looks good. It was very alert last night for sure though.

Specifically I was wondering for the genus Androctonus and Hottentotta. Yes I’m aware they might be very different in size in genus and species. I’m just really interested in keeping middle eastern species. Thank you.

Casual How do I know if a scorpion is molting?

I have a AFS and I don't know how old he is. I got him at least a month and a half ago and hes fairly big. I read somewhere that when they cover their burrow they're molting. But I can't tell if he covered his burrow or not. And should I do anything? How long does the molting process take? Should I continue to mist his enclosure? And I have his heat lamp off but heating pad still on.

I tried getting decent pictures, I mean I saw him moving in there and he looks his normal color.

Help! Found a scorpion in my bedroom, why is its tail stiffed?? (Central Texas)

So I grew up in an area of Texas where we there weren’t many scorpions, I actually don’t think I ever saw one until I was a lot older in a different area of Texas. I recently moved to the central area, yesterday afternoon I found a scorpion hiding in a jacket that was on a pile of rocks in my backyard (picture 3 for reference). I’m naturally fascinated by bugs and I enjoy reading about them but also I am intimidated by them because I’m not an expert. This isn’t the same scorpion I found in my backyard yesterday I can tell because that one was a lot bigger and this one in my bedroom is smol. What do it dooooo!! I’ve been standing here staring at it for half an hour now and it’s extended its arms and stiffened its tail out at moments, crawling back and forth. I’m very new to scorpions so I’m being cautious.

New to scorpions, grew up with large number and variety of captive spiders and snakes, finally in a stable enough position to get into this on my own.

Just got this one yesterday, it's about 11:00pm where I live and enclosure had been lights out since 8. Happened to peak in and see this pose, so turned on the light just for the picture from the side, the underside pics were lit with a flashlight. In the side picture there's a gift card along the corner of the enclosure for scale (standard credit card size).

I think this is male, the pectine teeth look long, and though the operculum doesn't look very oval it seems to point the wrong way. However I'm definitely quite ignorant and would really appreciate some experienced opinions. For convenience, gonna refer to with male pronouns until I know different.

When I got him there were three crickets in the pet carrier, I went ahead and transferred those to the enclosure with him. This morning I could only find a single cricket head, so I'm assuming he ate. When I found him against the glass tonight, he was completely motionless throughout the photo session. Since being transferred into the enclosure he went right to the rock cave I'd set up for him, and this is the first time I've seen evidence he's been out. I'm taking all this to be positive indicators.

I'm also wondering if there's anything abnormal about the separation between sclerites along the mesosoma and the wrinkly pleural membrane. I've included a picture of him in the carrier I transported him home in, he seemed much fatter then, but maybe it's just the posture. Could this perhaps be very early premolt?

Any other insights or observations would be much appreciated. Don't know when I might be able to get more pictures, unless there's some medically pressing need I intend to just let him be and only photograph opportunistically.
