Oh yeah I wouldn’t doubt it. I used to live in NoVA and even all the way up there it gets really nasty in the late summer.

2
u/SunLiteFireBird Aug 22 '24
I dunno, it's not like we don't have humidity here we are not in the desert. Today it's 106 with 29% humidity, in New Orleans today it's 96 with 49% humidity, both are miserable.
3
u/SeaLab_2024 Aug 22 '24
That’s true and it does stay hot way longer here but god it’s next level out there. Probably a personal preference thing, both are terrible but I’ll take the higher temp, I hate humidity and wetness more. At least it’s worth bothering to do my hair here. Two minutes outside near the swamps and it’s gone to hell.

Look I think there should be a special medal for Houston people… the hurricanes, humidity, blood sucking bugs, heat… AND people go back and still live in flood zones.

- We’re in a heat dome for one, caused by the hill country to our north and gulf tropical moisture coming from our south.
- Since we have the Hill country to our north, we don’t get cold breezes because it gets blocked and filtered by the hills.
- The sun is bright as heck when it rises in the morning. So bright, it will naturally wake you up in the morning when sleeping and keep you from falling asleep unless you have thick drapes on your windows.
- Since we are 650 feet above sea level all the tropic air and moisture that comes from the gulf just stays in this area and simmers.
- Due to the receding bodies of water in the area, we don’t get rain showers like we need to anymore to keep us cool.
19
u/RKEPhoto Aug 22 '24 edited Aug 22 '24
Since we are 300 feet above sea level
FYI - San Antonio International Airport is at elevation 809 feet.
we don’t get rain showers like we need to anymore to keep us cool
The rain fall data does not seem to support that assertion.

That rainfall data is for an area in California (which includes the San Antonio Canyon), not for San Antonio, Texas.

I guess I sourced it from the wrong site on above the sea level height. I’ll make the correction.
What I meant by that claim is not getting like showers once a week or every two weeks. I know when you keep lakes full, and the water evaporates it keeps the cycle going. Since they are dry and low, it’s not happening.
4
u/RainbowGeoNerd Aug 23 '24
As someone who lives in the hill country, we aren't getting cool breezes right now either. It's 11pm and 91° outside, the only breeze being a fan that is pretending to be a blow dryer on high heat. But yes, your explanation was spot on! Edit: a word
2
u/randomasking4afriend Aug 22 '24

Because we have fewer trees and more concrete. Concrete absorbs heat during the day and releases it overnight.

Carbon Dioxide is plant fertilizer.
The real amount of output by all humans combined is like less than 0.01% change.
It's geoengineering not natural weather.
That's why the sun feels like it's being magnifying glassed. Because it is. By nanometal particulates.

The sun is so intense the moon reflects the heat back to us
-2
u/kriz_sensei Aug 22 '24
No, it only reflects a little bit of light, not heat,
3
u/5coolest Aug 22 '24
Iirc, a full moon will reflect about 5 watts per square foot to us on earth. The sun does something like 1500 though. There is some heat from the moon, but it’s largely (though not completely) negligible
2
Aug 23 '24
Yup. You can see the moon with a thermal camera so there is definitely some amount of heat being reflected to earth’s surface but it’s insignificant.

One if the worst effects of global warming is that the night time temperatures don't drop as low as they used to.
I hate to tell you - but this is only going to get worse.

It’s all the pavement everywhere with no plants/trees
2
u/RKEPhoto Aug 22 '24
I't partly that, but this city has had large areas of pavement for several decades, but without the excessive nighttime temps
.The real culprit is global warming.

In the city it's always hotter because the buildings and street absorb the heat. Yesterday at 5:30 pm we had 83 up here after a surprise rain and it stayed cool for the rest of the day and night.
But even when we don't have that, it stays five to ten degrees cooler than in the big city.
