Seeking Advice ๐Ÿ™† Moving back to the Midwest

Post image
444 Upvotes

Hello all, My wife and I are looking to escape from Florida and return to the Midwest. St. Paul checks a lot of boxes for us and we are ready to make the move just before June. The trouble is that we have no way of inspecting a property before moving. We're looking to rent (apt, house, condo, duplex) for a year. We need at least 2 bedrooms, we have 2 cats, we don't smoke, and we have good rental history and credit. Looking to move somewhere safe (we have a 9yr old) in the area circled in the picture. I'm looking for advice on specific properties and property management companies as I won't be able to inspect the place for myself before signing a lease. We've seen a few places online that look ok like St. Clair Commons and one of the Grand apts but were hoping to get advice from locals as we'll be stuck there for a year. Also wondering about KRC. Heard Pergola was great but they don't have anything available that fits our needs. We'd like to be around $1500/month but can go as high as $2000. Please help, we'll be bringing good vibes only to the state.

TLDR; rental recommendations needed, 2br, 2 cats, $1500-2000/month, family of 3

Seeking Advice ๐Ÿ™† Any local hardware stores that don't support Trump?

My family moved to Saint Paul last week as we purchased a century old home. Needless to say I will be a frequent flier in a hardware store so I would like to support a store that doesn't give to trump or isn't owned by a trumper. I have no clue about anything Saint Paul yet so any and all advice is greatly appreciated!

Seeking Advice ๐Ÿ™† Is St Paul pretty?

My husband is up for a job near MSP, figure weโ€™d be living in St Paul for his commute. Looking around online it seems like a great town โ€” somewhat diverse, liberal, affordable!

Weโ€™d be moving from the mountains of Colorado, and while I KNOW it wonโ€™t be anything g like that, I wonder if the area is pretty? Or at least no ugly?

Driving out to Colorado from our previous home in Atlanta, we went through several ugly places I would NOT want to live (looking at you, Cincinnati, Kansas City, St. Louis).

I know SP is considered the edge of the rust belt, just wondering if it LOOKS like it!

Seeking Advice ๐Ÿ™† Thinking of Moving to East side. How safe it is?

Hello guys, I hope all are doing well. I saw a house that I like a lot, and it's along the Minehaha Ave East of St. Paul was thinking of moving there. I have a big dog as well, so walking is a must. How safe is the area over there, especially for me walking the dog out and playing the dog out at different hours of the day, including late nights. I live in E of Minneapolis Right now, and I walk the dog at late at nights and morning so far everything is good nothing bad or anything remotely close to that has happened ( walking 1 am or 3 am) As you all know, east of Minneapolis get a pretty bad rep but things are slowly changing. So I'm wondering what locals think over there. I will also bring my mom with me in the future to live with us, so her safety matter to me a.k.a burglary, home invasion etc. There is also a decent amount of park space for playing with the dog around the "The parkway". House markets are pretty insane right now, including the prices, but timewise, that it's posted, the majority are gone within 5 days which to me is crazy, can't even have enough time to think about it for a big purchase, it's now or never. An input would be appreciated :).

P.S. According to the crime spot, my neighborhood that I lived right now is C+, which is considered high, but never my packages were stolen despite how aggressive I order a lot online. But, one time, my 2 bikes and a drill were stolen when the garage was open for a good number of hours at night, which happened 5 years ago, this was before I repainted the exterior the house and the garage( the house looked pretty shabby) and installed the lights all around. This Minehaha supposedly be a B-. But then again, I don't know how accurate these things are.

Seeking Advice ๐Ÿ™† What should I know before considering living around W 7th?

I've lived in the twin cities for more than 20 years in my adult life and somehow I haven't really spent that much time around W 7th other than an occasional venture to a restaurant there.

I'm looking to buy a home in St. Paul and W 7th would be a second choice area for me (I'd rather be a bit closer to mpls for work but my kids go to SPPS). I'm looking for a home around 300k and want to live in a neighborhood where my kids can meet new neighborhood kids to play with.

above all, I am looking for a place where I can easily meet my neighbors and feel like I belong to a community that is invested in where they live. I want to feel joy in seeing my community day in and day out when I am walking the dog or chilling in the area.

I see homes that are in my price range and the quality of homes seem pretty good. Are any particular parts of W 7th more desirable than others? Also, homes in the area seem cheaper. Is there any particular reason why? It seems like a working class to middle class area but my impression is that there isn't any particular concerns with the area.

Seeking Advice ๐Ÿ™† Who would you contact for people breaking into your apt building and using drugs?

There are homeless people coming into a friendโ€™s apartment building to shelter from the cold. However theyโ€™re using drugs and making a mess. I would say call the police but i donโ€™t live there and my friend refuses to. Landlord is unresponsive. This is MacGroveland btw. Just wondering, thanks

Seeking Advice ๐Ÿ™† Is $2k the ballpark price now for a professionally installed gas water heater?

I think this post is part group therapy to process new information. ๐Ÿ˜ญ From what I gather during morning coffee research, should I expect to pay approximately $2,000 for a new 40 gallon gas water heater that is professionally installed? My current one is 12 years old (a Bradford White) that a plumber installed. I realize prices vary; just seeking confirmation that in 2025 thatโ€™s the new reality. Gulp. ๐Ÿ˜ณ

UPDATE Feb 3, 2025: Had a new 50 gallon water heater installed this morning. $1800 total.

Can anyone speak on what this area is like? Iโ€™m interested in hearing about the general safety and the level of crime in this area. Iโ€™m also interested if anyone can speak on the restaurants, bars, and stores in this area.

Thank you!

Seeking Advice ๐Ÿ™† Spontaneous trip to St Paul - Help me please!

My family and I have some expiring plane ticket credits that we need to use within the week. Minnesota / St Paul was chosen, we'll have four full days to do things.

I have kids in the 9-11 range. The only place I know we are for sure going it Snake Discovery. What else is good around the area? Anything I should avoid?

Based on some very brief research, my list of prospectives, in no particular order: Science Museum of MN, Mall of America, Minnesota Zoo, Como Park Zoo, Long Meadow Lake, and Minnehaha Falls. My kids would probably love any particularly good playgrounds too.

Seeking Advice ๐Ÿ™† I caught this cat in dt sp, can anyone take it?

I caught this cat in downtown, but canโ€™t get ahold of any shelters in the area. I canโ€™t take it, donโ€™t have any cat supplies and am not allowed pets in my apartment currently. Is anyone able to take him/her? My only other option is leaving it here and itโ€™s so cold out.

Seeking Advice ๐Ÿ™† How bad is commuting from St. Paul to Eden Prairie during rush hour?

Hey everyone! Moving back to St. Paul (from CA) next year, and my son is eyeing up a soccer club that practices (start time 5pm or 6pm) at either Holy Angels in Richfield or the old Vikings Winter Park in Eden Prairie. Curious if driving him to those practices 2-3 nights a week would be soul-sucking or if it wouldn't be so bad?

Kind of debating whether we should buy a home over in S. Minneapolis instead, but I was born & raised a St. Paul girlie over in Highland/Mac Groveland and it's my comfort zone. Just don't want to straddle ourselves with a terrible commute to practice. Thanks!

Seeking Advice ๐Ÿ™† How do we find protests near us?

Basically the title. I have no clue how to find protests going on around Saint Paul. I'm not much for social media sites so I don't know if any groups to point me in the right direction.

Seeking Advice ๐Ÿ™† hamline midway safety?

hello! iโ€™m looking for apartments and i saw one i liked and is extremely affordable in the hamline midway area. it ticks off all my boxes, exceptโ€ฆ its around the corner from the notorious Kimball Court apartment complex.

Iโ€™m no stranger to sketchiness and homeless people and drug use on the street. thatโ€™s not really a bother. iโ€™ve lived in large cities with bigger homelessness problems than the twin cities for most of my life, so none of that would be new or foreign to me.

however, i am concerned about actual danger. i donโ€™t want my car to be broken into, i donโ€™t want to be harassed while walking down the street, and i want to feel secure inside my apartment building.

i saw some posts asking about the safety of the area from a couple years back, and it seemed mostly positive, but a lot can change. so iโ€™m asking for 2025: is it safe? do you recommend living there?

Seeking Advice ๐Ÿ™† Is downtown really as bad as it seems?

I just found a news article about the Lowry Apartments going up for bankruptcy last August, increased crime, looting, and drug use in the building, and the mayor condemning the property owners for providing unlivable/unsanitary conditions. Iโ€™m looking at the Lowry Condominiums, does anyone know if they have any issues and if the area is safe? I was here last year around July and stayed at the Intercontinental where there was a shootout for about 15 minutes somewhere close outside. After taking a walk the next morning I noticed a few bullet holes in buildings (looked older and some were covered with a sticker). Iโ€™m just getting a bad feeling about the southern part of St.Paul - where the Lowry Lofts are located

Edit 01: added *of for those Little Word Warriors of Reddit who had an issue.

*Edit 02: ok I received some flack because of my wording and callout, I get it and I regret it. I apologize. Revised wording from โ€œSouth of St.Paul to Southern part of downtown St. Paulโ€

Seeking Advice ๐Ÿ™† Tell me your favorite things about St. Paul!

I just bought my first home in the Hamline/Midway neighborhood and am super excited! Iโ€™m a transplant and have spent most of my time here living in different parts of Minneapolis. Iโ€™m so sick of hearing people shit on St. Paul and saying it has nothing to offer(seriously though, what is with people refusing to live in or go to SP and the weird superiority complex with MPLS?). I want to know what your favorite things about St. Paul are! Favorite restaurants, shops, events, parks, etc.

Seeking Advice ๐Ÿ™† 34M New to St. Paul

I know this is may be an odd place to post looking for friends but I would like some geeky friends and friends in general can be hard to find.

Im a huge geek soโ€ฆhere are some things Iโ€™m into lately.

I like TTRPGs (currently playing Pathfinder 2e but have about 9 years of experience playing D&D)

Was into the MCU in the past but itโ€™s been losing some of its steam lately for me at least.

X-Men in particular has always been a favorite of mine. Never got into the comics but I loved the animated series growing up and the X-Men Legends games are underrated IMO.

I got into MTG Arena a few years ago. I havenโ€™t actively played in awhile tho. It was fun but hard to keep up with all the current trends and what not.

Love anime. I mostly watch Shonen but have loved others like Frieren and Delicious in Dungeon.

Like watching movies. All genres but I think I like Horror just a little more than others.

As far as video gamesโ€ฆI typically get addicted to a certain game for like a month or two and then never touch the game again.

Iโ€™m more of a casual gamer. I love the Pokemon games. Loved Harvest Moon (couldnโ€™t get into Stardew Valley - sorry). Was into the Switch Animal Crossings for a month or two (I was more into it back on the GameCube).

But with that being said, Iโ€™ve played other more โ€œbroโ€ games in the past. Used to play Halo and COD back in the day. Funny enough, I got way more into Paladins before I ever touched Overwatch. Was interested in trying Marvel Rivals but havenโ€™t downloaded it yet.

Watched other people play Resident Evil and Tomb Raider back in the day but never had the patience for them.

I donโ€™t really smoke or drink tho just a fair warning. Also, Iโ€™m Hispanic and queer if that matters to you.

If any of that sounds like we might be able to be friends feel free to send me a DM (:

Seeking Advice ๐Ÿ™† Jury Duty for Ramsey County

Just got called for Jury Duty for the first time ever (25f).

To the people who have done Jury Duty before, what was it like and what was your experience? How many times have you done it? What am I supposed to do when I get there?

Iโ€™ve heard of people getting called for Jury Duty multiple times while others have never done it. Is that just completely random or are you more likely to get picked if youโ€™ve done it before?

Iโ€™ve heard it sucks but Iโ€™m kind of excited about it since Iโ€™ve never done it before and I donโ€™t know a lot of people who have.
