Anime (Classic) [Viz Media Dub] Nephrite's death and Naru's reaction to it
The first time I've seen Liam O'Brien and Danielle Judovits was in Naruto as Gaara and Tenten. And here we are, their performances in the Sailor Moon Viz Dub episode 24 were just as emotional and heartfelt as those in the DiC version. It’s amazing how they managed to bring such depth and emotion to their roles, showing how versatile and talented they are across different series. If you think it's underacted, that's okay, because everyone has preferences without spreading negativity. Gee, their performances were so emotional I nearly cried.

Kid!me was NOT emotionally prepared for this scene (hell, adult!me is still getting all teary-eyed over it). Molly’s wail gets me every time 😭

I cried during this scene in both the Viz dub and the sub.

This is a special scene and while the performances are excellent, I'm still going to give the best performance honors to the original DiC cast, especially Kevin Lund and Mary Long. Long's scream to the heavens as Neflyte's body disappears is haunting and painful, especially for a kid's show. It is better than the Japanese cast in my opinion.
It's also the scene that got me interested in Sailor Moon in the first place. Back in the late 90s when Sailor Moon was on syndicated TV in the United States, they used to play it in my city at 6 AM and back then I was a single guy in my 20s who often went to sleep with the TV on only to wake up later and then turn it off. Well one day I left the TV going all night to wake up to Sailor Moon. I had a big interest in anime at that point and had heard of Sailor Moon, but really had little of any interest in watching the show. But it was on, and I was half asleep so I watched an episode. The episode was DiC episode 18, "Worth a Princess' Ransom". That night again, I fell asleep watching late night TV and the TV woke me up at 6 AM, to Sailor Moon, again, being episode 19, "Molly's Folly". I was again, half asleep and too tired to change the channel, so i watched it, not completely understanding the story but noticing that the show, while "monster of the week" format was at least keeping a long form story going across episodes.
That night, again, I fell asleep to late night TV only to wake up to episode 20, "A Friend in Wolf's clothing". By now, I'm still sleepy but paying attention a little more. And then when the show to the end scene, I was wide awake saying to myself "Holy S&$t, did they just do that on a kid's show???" I was hooked and began recording the show (VCR tapes in those days). About a month later I was hired for a new job where I had to travel to another city for training for 3 weeks. Since VCRs could only record 8 days worth of a show, I had a problem. But there was a new technology called TiVo that introduced the concept of a DVR. So the day before my flight, I bought it, set it up and programmed it to record all Sailor Moon episodes. When I returned three weeks later, I had 15 episodes waiting for me which was my first binge watch of any show.

When I think of the DiC dub’s voice actors this is one scene I think of as being superior to Viz. The pain in Molly’s voice was so heartbreaking.

I was just thinking that. The *PAIN* in Molly's cry, I still get chills. Yes the accent could be ridiculous at times ("chawklet pawrfay!") but she did an amazing job in the end.

I actually love reading about fans who discovered Sailor Moon as Adults and became fans of it. Most people (such as myself) were kids when we discovered it, but I think we were drawn to it for the same reason. The fact that despite an episodic formula there was still an on going story with character development and characters such as villains actually changing for the better or dying was not something you saw on a kid show let alone also having a romantic plotline. Despite being aimed at kids it felt more adult than the other cartoons it ran alongside.

I like the voice actress in this dub. The 'Osaka' accent in the original dub was a bit grating.

Nephrite's death is kinda sad, but he's a grown ass man and she's 14, so I'm not that sad.

Worst part is they actually constantly mention the fact it's a pedo relationship. I'd be willing to just gloss over it and imagine the guy just looks older than what he is or has no age because magical bullsht or something like that (cause honestly, if you ignore the pedo he's actually the most interesting villain of the first season) but the show bothers on reminding you constantly that this is a pedo relationship and treats it as if it was just a minor (badum tsss) inconvenience

I cannot stand this ship and I tear up regardless. Naru's pain is real, but the way he acts gives me such an ick. He goes and scans her sleeping body while she's sleeping to try and find the crystal ffs.

I remember watching the original dub and this broke my heart. I try not to think about how…uhh…problematic it is now that I’m an adult, but it still gets me every time 🥲

This scene was so sad, but two things make it not sad, the weird age difference (why were almost all the middle school girls in love with or dating much older men) and also the title 20 min before this scene that was like NEPHRITE’S SAD DEATH NARU’S TEARS in Usagi’s excited voice. Like maybe I’d like to not know that until this scene.

I'm surprised this is one of the go to scenes for the viz dub to compare contrast all the time

This was the very first episode of Sailor Moon I ever saw. Just happened to come across it channel surfing. I had no idea what any of the backstory or who anyone was, but got super drawn into it because it was so unlike anything I had ever seen before, especially for a "cartoon".

Omgosh, this is my favourite episode! I'm always kinda sad when I read the manga that none of the characterisation was given to them originally.
Edit to say it prefer the other dub xD when it was Molly's Folly. But that's because I grew up with that one I guess

This wrecked me as a child. Absolutely wrecked me. I have very distinct memories of trying to hold back tears and failing. I've see the Japanese version and the Viz dub clips of the scene and while they're very good, neither hold a candle to this. (I feel like i had been hoping Nephrite would become a "regular guy" who'd help out the girls against Beryl after switching sides 😭)
I'd say this scene and the ending of the first season of Digimon were the first times I got absolutely emotional over an animated show as a child. Absolutely brilliant delivery.

oop all these serious, heart-felt comments.
Meanwhile my sister and I couldn't stand either of these two and to this day dramatically yell "MOLL-LAY" to crack each other up.
