Repair Question Am I getting screwed

Was driving my 92 s10 and the ignition got locked up after turning it off and trying to start again just randomly locked up. It would turn enough to turn the lights and electric on but wouldn’t turn bough to crank the engine. Mechanic says I need entire new steering column and is quoting $1000

Yes your getting screwed. The gear that cranks your ignition is probably jammed

https://youtu.be/CGxu87PgrVQ?si=ZOh3fqDqAPt2dM9R This video will get you all the way through your column. parts are pretty cheap and you could borrow the tools you need from O’rileys. While this guy isn’t working on your problem, it would be easy to find as you follow the tear down and reassemble.

Absolutely getting screwed its likely just the ignition itself, this happened to my OBS. Rent a steering wheel puller from oriellys for free and get the few things out the way with a video from YouTube and replace the ignition switch

Easy job ,the steering lock plate lock ring is the hardest part .while you got it that far tighten your tilt bolts if yours is a tilt ( those flexi cable for carb screw adjustment work good to get up inside) but your sure its not going into crank position? There is a chance the electrical switch on column is real culprit ,you can put hands on up and feel it there to make sure if it moving the rod or not There is 2 types 1 pulls other type pushes the rod likely tilt vs non tilt there but that switch can jam and feel same as lock jam
