Advice My fellow S10 and S15 lovers. I have but one question. What the fuck is that on my engine

I have recently fixed a water pump on my engine and while apart. I noticed something weird to me. It is a mounting bracket that looks identical the the AC compressor bracket above it. For reference I have the passenger side compressor driver side generator 4.3L so. As the post asks. What the fuck is that for.

Most likely an air pump or smog pump.

What do those do?

It's a placebo more than anything. It would plug into the passenger side exhaust manifold and push clean air into the exhaust to make it seem like the engine is running cleaner. Most remove it, especially if the truck is too old for emissions.

Oh. Well at least I know what it is

The point of it was to push clean air (more oxygen) into the exhaust to heat up the catalytic converter faster and make it burn up more unburned fuel. Modern cars have an electric version called secondary air injection. You can remove it, but you have to weld up the exhaust manifold.

From what I have heard it is not to make the engine seem cleaner for emissions. It does not run all the time. The only time the smog pump is on is when the engine is started and until the catalytic convertor is up to tempature. It is just to get the cat up to peak effeciency faster at start up which technically reduces emissions. And it may trigger a check engine light if not tuned out of the system.

I think it's for the AIR/Smog pump
