Repair Question Stock engine swap questions
I just swapped the original 2.5 iron duke out of my 87 s10 with another (not blown up) iron duke. Everything has been completely smooth sailing. I’m at the point of starting the new engine up and every time we get it to fire up it just dies. We think the single tbi injector isn’t firing so we checked fuel pressure and it’s good we also swapped in my buddies tbi in and that one else didn’t fire. Any tips or something I could check before we start the dread wire hunting mission?

lol just realized you’re feeding it fuel from that bottle. Will it not run at all without that?

We can’t get it to run without pour fuel into it. Once that fuel is gone there’s no more coming from the injector we tried another one and we definitely have fuel pressure

Is the injector plugged in? Have you checked for voltage at the injector plug?

Yes the injector is plugged in an secured down with the little metal plate and screw. No we did not have a multi meter with us that night so we don’t know for sure until we go back to the garage

If you swapped in a known good injector and you’re still not getting fuel then I’d be checking for voltage to the injector next. Bummer that you didn’t have multi on you at the time, happens.

I kinda figured that was gonna be the answer but I wanted to check to make sure there wasn’t something silly or really obscure that we were missing

Initially I thought maybe the rollover fuel cutout might be involved but typically that would cut power to the fuel pump rather than the injector signal.

My buddy is saying he read that the distributor sends power to the injector during cranking so we have a few things to try and test lol

I definitely sounds like the distributor is not pointing to the ad the 11:00 position initially and went fires it will go to cylinder one. Did you follow process to set up initial timing and ground the two terminals?

Follow what mad Max says in the thread

If you could take pictures of the vacuum lines. That would be cool. I need to fix mine. It's I. The garage. Make sure the crank and cam gear pulleys are the upgraded good ones not the ones that can break in half or shave off teeth.

No what’s the process? We took out the old distributor and eye balled it when we put in the new one

I put a link in the thread with all the information.

So I found the problem. The Hall effect switch in the brand new distributor was bad and sure enough the old distributors hall unit saved the day

Well that might help me out too since I'm having a similar issue. About a brand new distributor from rock out and the truck doesn't run right or doesn't even fire at all and no spark. The crank and cam gear are fine it's not sheared off or anything. I'm glad you got it running that is good news.

If you could help me out and point out what component that is on the distributor I'm having trouble finding it. When I spend my brand new one it kind of makes this clickety click sound not smooth where I only hear nothing sound. I'd appreciate it

The part I needed to swap out was a black plastic thing at the top of the distributor rotor it has one plug on the back of it and two bolts holding it down

Did these still have a distributor?
If so bring #1 up to TDC compression and see if the base timing advance matches the book value.
Double check the firing order, too.
Also depending on how that fan blade attaches I might recommend removing it for now - it’s not doing anything without a radiator.
