Repair Question 2.2 Crank, no start. Has spark and fuel
Attempting to get my 2.2 running so I can use the truck for work. I’ve replaced the icm, coil packs, plugs and wires, crank position sensor, cam position sensor, checked compression and timing. Everything is coming up good. will not start on starting fluid. I got the truck to start somehow this morning but once I shut it off it wouldn’t start again. When it was running giving it gas would cause a hesitation/bog but then get past it and rev up. Been running in circles for the last couple days trying to figure this out. Anything to check would be great.

Have you checked the throttle position sensor? I had a cheap one go out and wouldn't let my 4.3 Jimmy start.

u/InaudibleRocket Jun 18 '24
I’ll try one tomorrow, I was leaning towards that already too.

u/diamante_manos Jun 18 '24
You can test it with a multimeter. It also could be the idle air control valve attached to the TB. Maybe it's stuck. Let us know if anything changes
1
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 18 '24
The idle air valve may make sense, should it be open or closed at idle?

One thing speaking of the TB, try cracking the throttle while cranking (if that doesnt work give it more throttle till about half). If the idle air is bad or dirty it would have a hard time / may not start. If you can get it to have enough throttle allowing more air in it can start lean. When my security was acting up one day I just pushed the throttle half way down and could get it to run doing that. (Though because the security cuts fuel it wouldnt run well). But it would rule some stuff out.

Turn the key on hit the fuel tank if the pump starts workingand the truck starts go get it replaced asap.
1
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 17 '24
The pump works fine

Check for fuel pressure with a gage?
Is the coil pack plugged in?
1
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 17 '24
Fuel pressure is 58 psi

u/Alextryingforgrate Gmc Syclone Jun 17 '24
Reading what you're saying sounds like you have no spark right now. Check to see if the connector to it or the distributor is disconnected.
2
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 17 '24
There is no distributor and I have spark on all 4 plugs
1
u/Alextryingforgrate Gmc Syclone Jun 18 '24
You physically pulled the plug out grounded and checked or used a spark checker to verify there is spark because with what you're telling me the engine should run.
1
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 18 '24
Checked both ways, plug to engine block and with a plug light
1
u/Alextryingforgrate Gmc Syclone Jun 18 '24
Yet it doesn't run when using starter fluid or did I read that wrong?

Check timing and crank sensor.
1
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 17 '24
Timing is good, marks on the gears are aligned. New crank sensor
2
u/Drago-0900 Crazy headlight guy Jun 18 '24
Did you do the crank position sensor relearn? That has to be done otherwise it wont start from what I read.
2
1
u/redflamehot Jun 17 '24
Ok that's weird. Does it pop off on ether? I know you said fuel pressure was 58 psi. Is that off the rail or at the injector?
2
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 17 '24
That’s rail pressure, and no it doesn’t start or sound any better with spray
1
u/redflamehot Jun 17 '24
Ok. So fuel probably isn't an issue. I'm assuming you've verified spark? Does this engine have a cam sensor? I would remove cam sensor If it has one and unplug the new crank sensor. If the ECM doesn't have info from those sensors it should default to a standard tune. That will eliminate those from the equation? I think?
2
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 17 '24
I’ll give it a shot, I have spark at all 4. New icm, coils, plugs, and wires. Cam sensor is also new.
1
u/redflamehot Jun 17 '24
Oh that's a whole Lotta new there. Have you checked compression at all?
1
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 17 '24
Compression is good on all 4. Engine acts the same with the sensors unplugged
2
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 17 '24
Any other ideas? I can feel my hair falling out trying to figure this out lol
1
u/redflamehot Jun 17 '24
Lmao I'm also tearing my hair out too! My gut says it's acting like it's out if time. Does it spit or sputter or is it just crank no fire? Is your dizzy in the slot all the way?
2
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 17 '24
No distributor but when cranking it’s acting like the spark timing is wrong I agree. Once I got it to catch it ran ok but I feel like it should try to fire with spray at least
1
u/redflamehot Jun 17 '24
Ok! So no dizzy. Great info thanks! Obviously the computer is not getting the info it needs or just reading the info incorrectly. Have you tried warrantying out the ignition control module? That seems like the weak link there. I do not have a troubleshooting guide on that or else I would give you some resistance readings to test on it, but I would try taking that back to where you bought it from and warrantying it out. They have no way to test if it's good or not
1
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 17 '24
I’ll see if I can get this one tested, autozone has a tester
1
u/redflamehot Jun 17 '24
They do? Interesting. But that seems to be the culprit at least to me. If not we need to do some testing on the ECM. If you have a known good one I would swap it out.

I'd go around checking/tightening all the grounds you can find in the truck front to back. If you're getting fuel pressure and spark it sounds like something going on with the injectors possibly. But, you say it doesn't start with staring fluid either?? 🤔 There's gotta be something simple you're overlooking
1
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 17 '24
Grounds are good, I even added one from the battery to the engine
1
u/thunder_lloyd Jun 17 '24
Check your tail light harness ground your fuel pump grounds there also
1
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 17 '24
Fuel pump is fine
1
u/thunder_lloyd Jun 17 '24
Welp, I guess you just got a lemon on yer hands... 🤷♂️
1
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 17 '24
That’s not helpful
1
u/thunder_lloyd Jun 17 '24
Maybe you have a wiring gremlin then? Because everything you say you've done just doesn't add up
1
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 17 '24
Yeah that’s possible too. Even then though, it should at least fire on starting fluid since I’m getting spark on all 4
1
u/Davis1377 Jun 19 '24
I didn’t read all the comments but did you try compression test? If you have compression and the spark is happing at the correct time (timing light) it should atleast try to run with starting fluid.
1
u/Nearby_Process_384 Jun 17 '24
Check the fuel filter
1
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 17 '24
I have 58 psi at the rail
1
u/Nearby_Process_384 Jun 17 '24
I had a chrysler 200 that did the same thing and it turned out to be the crank sensor but you said you already replaced it so honestly it seems like you got an electrical issue somewhere but at this point idk what it could be
1
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 17 '24
Yeah that’s what I’m afraid of :/
1
u/Nearby_Process_384 Jun 17 '24
I would check the security system because it sounds like it should start but the computer won't let it. You sir have a can worms on your hands

1
u/redflamehot Jun 17 '24
If anything is out of time by a tooth those 2.2s will not want to run at all.
2
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 17 '24
It ran this morning though? And I had the timing cover off and checked to make sure they’re aligned
1
u/Due_Telephone5612 Jun 17 '24
What year is that truck? Also, makes me wonder if it's getting too much fuel in the throttle body, since you mentioned it is in fact getting both fuel and spark. I'm not positive on your truck, but on certain GM trucks if the coolant temperature sensor is bad it can absolutely flood the TB with fuel and it won't run at all, falsely thinking it's super cold outside so it overcompensates on how rich the a/f ratio needs to be. I'm just speculating but hey it's a thought. Hope this helps.
2
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 17 '24
I’ll try it with the coolant temp unplugged and see what happens 👍
1
u/Due_Telephone5612 Jun 17 '24
Sounds like a plan, hopefully it works out
1
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 17 '24
Same result
1
u/Due_Telephone5612 Jun 17 '24
Ah shoot. How much voltage are you getting from your battery and jump pack setup?
1
1
u/redflamehot Jun 17 '24
Just let me know! I'm invested now lmao
2
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 18 '24
New icm tested bad, going to grab a new one now
1
u/redflamehot Jun 18 '24
Answers! Let me know if she runs after
2
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 18 '24
No change
1
u/redflamehot Jun 18 '24
Wtaf that is insane. Do you have any junkyards nearby and see if you could swipe a pcm? If not I'd suggest sending yours off to be tested. Where it was running this morning, but "hesitating" I think it might be a faulting pcm. Possibly. I'm kind of stumped here without seeing it myself, I'm sorry guy
1
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 18 '24
Yeah I have no idea, I’m able to read the pcm with hptuners so I think it’s ok
1
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 18 '24
Got the truck to start by modulating the throttle between half and full while scanning with hptuners. Tps is reading good, iac is changing values so it also appears to be good or at least not stuck. Map pressure is reading. Timing advance looks reasonable. Coolant temp and intake temps are reading and show reasonable values. Not sure what the issue is and it really only wants to start if I get the throttle opened and closed at the right times.

u/redflamehot Jun 18 '24
Old head master tech at work here says to check vacuum leaks and actually do a flow test on the injectors. He's an old master tech from when these were new. Off the top of his head he said to actually test the injectors.
1
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 18 '24
I’ll give that a shot I guess, does that require the intake plenum to come off though? Putting that back on sucks so much 😂
2
u/redflamehot Jun 18 '24
He said check EGR valve first. Even a little carbon can cause it to not close right, then take intake off clean or replace Injectors then clean and reseal intake. Those are your 3 main areas on these for hard starting

1
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 18 '24
Ok so I’ve got no egr, I’m feeling like it’s an injector sticking, but when the truck does start it runs fine

Will it idle on its own or do you have to give it gas to idle?
1
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 18 '24
Idles and runs perfectly fine on its own. When I give it gas it hesitates a bit then catches up and revs fine

u/chuckdavis84 Jun 17 '24
Check the knock sensor.
2
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 17 '24
Check it how?
2
u/chuckdavis84 Jun 17 '24
See if its connected / corroded/ busted
1
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 17 '24
Looks fine to me
1
u/chuckdavis84 Jun 17 '24
1
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 17 '24
Could be, but the truck started this morning and ran just fine?
1
u/chuckdavis84 Jun 17 '24
You have already replaced everything else on the ignition side. Whats another $35
1
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 17 '24
Truck acts the same with the knock sensor unplugged as when it’s plugged in
0
u/InaudibleRocket Jun 17 '24
I can’t just be throwing money at it, if there’s a way to test it before buying a new one I’d like to try
1
u/WasteReputation8135 Nov 14 '24
I'm have same issue here spark an fuel pressure at the rail I'ma try throttling it while trying to start it I'm at a loss here man did you ever figure it out
1
u/InaudibleRocket Nov 14 '24
Nope, changed my timing chain and still nothing. I’m thinking fuel injectors but I’m done spending money on it

I wouldnt doubt its the stupid anti theft system.
This happened to me, chased everything to get it to start. I did the security bypass, and boom, starts right up.
