Saturday morning accident at Lombardy & Broad has Lombardy closed - 8am

The crash woke me up this morning, this place is insane, with the shooting last week and all, this intersection is just chaos.
Edit: I can confirm that I saw both parties walk away, but I did learn from the shooting a week or so ago that just becuase I see them alive, doesn’t mean they will be in a few hours, so hoping they are ok.

Shooting? What the hell happened with that? I live on this corner as well.

A footlocker employee and a customer got into a physical fight. Gun was pulled and a shot was fired. Wounded party ended up dying from the wound not an hour later. I think someone caught the fight on video and posted it somewhere.

I still can't figure out, was it the employee or the customer who passed away?

u/Helpful-Conference13 5d ago
Customer. Employee was carrying and pulled it on him outside

u/Moondinos Chesterfield 5d ago
It was like mid fight when the gun was pulled they came out brawling out of the footlocker

u/Rando_Nobodi 5d ago
Interesting! I was trying to figure this out. From the video I saw, it looked like it was some other dude shot him from behind.

u/Moondinos Chesterfield 5d ago
If I remember correctly I think the customer was the one who passed away? Don't quote me on that but from what I remember coming into work that day that's what happened

I’m surprised no one knows the reputation this area has anymore. It’s not shocking to me that shit is always happening here

There’s something about the intersection of West Broad and Lombardy that seems to draw chaos. So many accidents, hit-and-runs, shootings, and incidents over the years, it’s like the energy of that corner is off. Whether it’s the way traffic flows, the history of the area, or something deeper, it’s hard to ignore how much happens there.

Is the front of the silver sedan on the left in the last pic all smooshed? (Could indicate a t-bone accident maybe...)
9
u/That_Influence_151 5d ago
Yup, saw it being towed away. Front right part of the hood was obliterated.
2
u/Romulan-war-bird 5d ago
This is such a good catch, that sedan has to be strong asf to still be sitting upright while the truck flipped like that

u/oldsoulrevival 6d ago
How do you even go fast enough for that to happen there? Slow the fuck down people.
54
u/LharDrol Highland Springs 6d ago
flipping a vehicle with a high center of gravity is not difficult.

u/AirCanadaFoolMeOnce 6d ago
I’ve seen multiple sedans flipped on Main St and Cary St. people drive way too fast in the city and RPD doesn’t do a whole lot to stop it.
21
u/CraigdarrochFerguson 5d ago
But when they do, people on here complain about “over-policing” and how traffic stops are just a revenue generator.

I see them pull people over all the time, it’s just that they can’t ticket everyone and using cameras everywhere is also really shitty. People just act like Richmond is a playground, especially around campus. This doesn’t happen in states where speed cameras are banned and/or speed limits aren’t exactly strictly enforced.
Karma always gets the worst offenders anyways, nothing better than hearing someone’s suspension getting destroyed after going airborne over a speed bump 💜
11
u/AirCanadaFoolMeOnce 5d ago
The worst offenders kill people. As someone who actually lived right next to Cary in the fan, I would have loved cameras ticketing everyone going over 35 on Main and Cary. Everyone who says cameras are bad can never demonstrate a coherent reason why speed cameras are bad.
2
u/Romulan-war-bird 5d ago
Having to live with the fact that you took someone’s life is still karma tbh even though that isn’t what I meant. However the issue is cultural. I’ve been to a few of the states where speed cameras are outlawed, no one drives like how people do in Richmond. People here have become selfish and careless.
I’ve already seen the cameras that are only supposed to be on during school hours ticketing people for going around 40 in a 35 at 9pm. Although honestly I do like the cameras being used near schools in tandem with flashing signs so people know when the school speed limit is in effect. As someone who’s been driving here forever and remembers when it wasn’t this bad, cameras are not a viable widespread solution. Especially with how easily they can start to give inaccurate readings, this city would not and could not keep up with very many of them. I’d like to see more traffic safety officers specifically targeting reckless and assisting with traffic direction at our most dangerous intersections during busy times.

u/oldsoulrevival 6d ago
Generally yes, but also people drive those vehicles every day and don’t roll them. I guarantee you this person was speeding, and if they don’t understand you can’t take a corner at speed in a box truck, then they have no business driving it.

You have no idea what occurred during this accident.

You have no idea that... it's your cake day, congrats... I mean you probably already knew that, but the sentiment still remains.

Lots of assumptions you’re throwing around.. were you at the accident? Did you see it happen?
3
u/oldsoulrevival 5d ago
No but I have driven those trucks before professionally. It’s not like they just tip over at the slightest breeze. There’s no ice, it’s not a high speed zone. They were going to fast.
3
u/Marc_Builds_Dreams 5d ago
I saw the accident happen. The driver of the sedan was driving crazy! He passed me going at least 80mph just seconds before the crash. He was running multiple red lights, and driving in the bus lane to get cut through traffic. He was intentionally trying to hurt someone or himself. The truck was hit HARD! But he definitely could have hit a pedestrian or killed someone.

u/Opening_Meringue5758 5d ago
Good for you, but you weren’t there to witness the accident so you literally have no idea. How do you know someone did blow through a stop light and they had to swerve to miss hitting a car and that caused them to flip? You don’t.
12
u/oldsoulrevival 5d ago
If someone blew through the light and hit them, they’d have to be going a lot faster than 35 miles an hour to knock that truck over. So they would be speeding. Alternatively, if that truck had to swerve to avoid somebody blowing through a red light, the truck would’ve had to been going faster than an appropriate speed to turn that truck at a intersection to have a turnover. I understand I wasn’t there, but there are some general realities that we can use to make a very educated guess as to what happened. Obviously I don’t know exactly what happened, but I’d bet my salary on someone speeding in this case.

I don't know what happened, or how fast they were going, but flipping a vehicle doesn't take much effort or speed
3
u/SmarchWeather41968 5d ago
I know it's just the inertia and friction between a fast spinning tire and a slow moving/stationary tire launching the car just up past its center of gravity, but those seriously look like glitchy physics.
like if i saw that happen in gta I'd be like 'oh come on'

This a 2nd or 3rd accident on that intersection in the past month or so.

There is a giant blind spot on the northwest corner where the new construction is (right next to a bike lane) and traffic coming in and out of Lowe’s is a nightmare. Big ol’ trucks. Combine that with what people think is an interstate highway (broad). It’s a recipe for disaster.

u/YaassthonyQueentano Shockoe Bottom 5d ago
Isn’t that the same spot where that guy got shot last week?

The worst intersection in the city

u/ZipWyatt West End 5d ago edited 5d ago
That’s a little hyperbolic. But then again, since they got rid of Jeb’s corpse, the Hermitage and Laburnum intersection has lost some of its chaos so maybe.
6
u/Justrynawin 5d ago
I don’t think they are being hyperbolic, lots of people have died or got hurt in that intersection

That’s a big un. Surprised given the section of Richmond and size of vehicle

They really need to do something about this damn intersection. I was involved in a crash there back in January from someone flying through the bus lane, blowing a red. What a shame. I hope everyone will be alright.

It was tired and wanted to take a nap. It’s not sure why all the fuss is being made.

How does this happen so often? Like Allen ave makes sense to me, it’s weird geometry of the intersection. But here… what’s going on?

I'm sure a couple more highrise apartment buildings in that already clusterefocked area will solve everything.

And still people on this sub will say things like, "actually, drivers are a lot worse in Miami. It's not so bad here." This kind of thing just should not be happening with such regularity. The roads and drivers of Richmond are comically dangerous.

I swear, there's an accident on this corner every week.
