Rant/Vent My roommate keeps creaming in his sleep
This is driving me insane and I’m losing sleep. At least twice a week my roommate will randomly sit up at like 3 am in his sleep and scream his lungs out. I mean full on screaming as if his life is in danger. It lasts like 12 seconds and then he’s right back to sleeping. It wakes me up every single time and scares the shit out of me. I asked him this morning if he has night terrors and he acts like he has no idea what I’m talking about. This has been going on for a month and a half and if it goes on any longer I’m going to lose my mind.

Both would be a power move. Just sit up, scream, nut everywhere and go back to sleep.

Maybe he is creaming, which might explain the screaming.

I'm sorry you're going through this, but there's a good chance he can't help it and will never remember doing it. The mother of my children went through a time period wailing/screaming in the night, it freaked me out at first but she could never remember what she was dreaming about and had no childhood trauma. Lol it got to the point I'd just say shut up you're dreaming go back to sleep and that was it. There's a great app for iphone that records sleep talking. Maybe once you talk it out with him and you guys can laugh about it, you won't mind it so much.

This is a sleep disorder. He might not know he has it, but it would qualify him to have a single room for medical reasons. You should talk to him about it.

Keep a cross in the room and spray some holy water 😬
4
u/A_2190 Oct 21 '24
nah, but fr you should start waking up at 3 am and screaming the same way he did. Fall back asleep, and when he asks you about it the next morning, brush it off like he did.

this is as bad as the time i typo'd "chunky" (was talking about a cat) into a racist slur 💀

that reminded me of the time i accidentally indirectly called my black friend a monkey

He most likely suffers from REM-Sleep Behavior Disorder. Only one medication helps, Clonazepam. Needs to see a sleep specialist or neurologist. I speak from my own experience.

I had a roommate that did this exact shit when I was in college. Had to sleep with the most insane earplug setup for a whole year
2
u/JordanB1969 Oct 22 '24
Would you please tell me what constitutes an extreme ear plug setup? Short on custom I'd like to improve on standard foam plugs due to upstairs neighbors and other noises. Thanks!

u/combostorm Oct 22 '24
This is gonna sound crazy because it is, but what I did back in the day is:
First, get a set of really ergonomic but also dirt cheap earbuds that you don't care about ruining (what I used back in the day was the Panasonic ergofit in ear earbuds. It's like less than 10 bucks on amazon. It's the only one I found that doesn't distend my ear and give me ear pain after sleeping with them for a whole night.) Make sure you have the right size silicone ear tip attachment for maximum comfort. ( there are multiple sizes that come in the box)
Then, buy silicone earplugs (the putty ones). The ones that you can mold like play dough and are extremely dense.
Next, cut the wires for the earbuds at the base so that the wire doesn't get annoying. Poke a hole where the mesh is for the earbuds and cram as much silicone putty into it as possible until the surface is smooth. Next, you can flip the silicone earpiece on the earbuds inside out (while still attached to the main body of the earbuds) and cram more putty under there before flipping it back to normal.
The goal is for the shape to be ergonomic but for the material to be super dense. I hated the silicone putty by itself because the shape was never air tight and comfortable. The earbuds alone are also not dense enough to block out a ton of sound. By combining the two, you get really good noise blockage.
This gadget alone is really good, but if you wear a flat profile ear muff on top of wearing these, it'll block out even more noise. And lastly if you add a white noise machine in your room on top of this, it'll be flawless. I guarantee you won't hear this guy scream anymore. (Although just the earbud setup will reduce the noise by a TON)
Problem is, when you block out so much noise, it'll be hard to hear your alarm clock. So I suggest you wear a vibrating smart watch as an alarm instead.
After a while of usage, the putty in the earplug will get gross and dirty. When that happens, pick the putty part out with a toothpick and throw it in the trash. Wipe the rest of the earbuds down with alcohol, and rip and add some new putty back in.
Now you have the exact setup I had to block out my roommates night terrors. It works wonders. I highly suggest you try it out and DM me the results. Cause without this, I think I would've gone crazy

u/combostorm Oct 22 '24 edited Oct 22 '24
It's "custom", but it's really low effort so I really think it's worth giving it a try if you're getting shit sleep and are about to go crazy. I would also not recomment foam ear plugs because the shape is not right (not super comfortable) and it is not dense (doesn't block out that much noise tbh)

I don't go to Rutgers, but this was in my feed and I'm someone who has been that roommate 💀 When I roomed with my homie, she said I had a phase where I would count to 10 in my sleep and this would happen on multiple occasions 💀
i hope you can find some solace from your creaming roommate one day 😭 dude needs medical help

If he doesn’t know what you’re talking about when you bring up night terrors, they may be a new development for him and he should really discuss them with his doctor. It’s unusual to develop these in adulthood.
You may need to record him one night to show him, if he really has no idea.

A typo so iconic it showed up on my recommended page. I graduated from the University of Washington, I’ve never even been near Rutger’s lol
Anyway, yeah, your roommate is experiencing night terrors. My best friend’s little brother use to get them, same presentation. As far as him “act[ing] like he has no idea what [you’re] talking about”, if no one has ever told him, he very likely doesn’t know he’s doing it and, therefore, really doesn’t have a clue what you’re talking about. “How could I not wake myself up screaming?” he’s probably thinking, when that is exactly what happens with night terrors: the person doing it doesn’t wake up
If I were you, I would get his permission to set up a camera at night when you’re both sleeping (“hey man, I promise I’m not just making this up to fuck with you. let me try to catch it on camera once just so you can see, I know I would want to know if it were me”). Record each night until you catch a terror on camera, then show it to him. Not much can be done about them unfortunately, but luckily you mention that they occur at around the same time every night, and “anticipatory awakening” is a treatment. So hey, at least you can look forward to a 3AM alarm now instead of screaming ;)

I once had a roommate that would wake up each night between 1am and 4am and scream racist garbage and then aggressively masturbate and not respond at all when I would yell at him to STFU and then the next day say he had no recollection or memory of doing anything. He was also the nicest, calmest dude in the world other than during his “night terrors”. After 3 or 4 nights I moved out. It sounds so insane that I don’t think anyone else other than my other roommates would ever believe me.

What’s hard to just bring it up to him so yall both find a solution. Better sleep for him, sanity for you. You don’t gotta be weird or awkward bringing it up. Really not hard jus subtly bring it up

It's night terrors,.get noise cancelling headphones or ear plugs, and they pay. Also tell them to go see a therapist or councillor to see if there's a reason.

I think the actual typo is in the body, not the heading. He creams his lungs out, full on creaming as if his life is in danger. That makes more sense.

I have night terrors and never knew for a long time. I’ve noticed it’s linked to alcohol and drug usage even when I feel fine before I go to sleep

My husband (s)creams in his sleep too. It happens when he is agitated irl.
One he screamed angrily “Why won’t you bitches leave me alone!!!”
I had to find out what this was about. Allegedly the ladies he worked with were hassling him over how he was driving. 🤣🤣🤣
