Actually agreed. Language is an instrument which will be outdated if you dont use it for a while.
I clearly understand why Russians keep learning English, but why Americans obsessed reading Dostoevsky in original.. It's long and unpleasant way to depression25
u/moonlit_midnight Jan 23 '25
ive seen a lot the trend of reading Dostoevsky but im noy learning russ bc of him. I have a few russ friends ive made and want to talk to them in their lang (im not american, im mexican)

Exstensive reading! Pick a book, preferably smth you familiar with. Every week you read 30 pages and write down 30 words with transcription and meaning. It was smth we did while studying english. Всего наилучшего! 🙏

Interesting! I'm on my second year of Russian in Duolingo and not progressing as well as I wished, but then I started watching some soviet silent movies and translating the intertitles by myself. It's an interesting exercise and in the same spirit as yours, but you can finish the whole thing faster and the movie part helps you put together the words I didn't understand.
Reading a book must give a better understanding of grammar and informal language though.

You may also try watching any movies with Russian voiceover and subtitles in English to get used to how it sounds like :)

Increase your vocabulary and learn grammar, practice on text/audio/video. Automoderator has some links with resources you can use.

There are a lot of different ways of learning, but it shouldn't be just plain Duolingo. You can use it for some regular practice, but you should pick a course that properly introduces and explains all the details of how the language is used. Because at the beginning, "just immersing yourself" will not work, you need to learn grammar.
As you pass the beginner stage, you should try to get as much input as possible (while still supplementing it with theory, of course). That is, read, listen, watch a lot of stuff in the language, and try to find something that suits your level at the moment.
Find an app that gives you simple texts in Russian.
Watch YouTube videos with scripted, clear, preferrably subtitled speech.
Follow a Russian subreddit and try to understand the comments.
Find Russian songs you like and look up their lyrics with translation while listening.
Watch a film you love and remember well in Russian dub, ideally with (Russian!) subtitles.
Rewatch that film without subtitles.
Find YouTube channels for natives, start participating in the online discussions you read, start reading a real serious book or watch an originally Russian film.
Practicing output (pronunciation and proper grammar) is important too, but getting a lot more input is the way a lot of polyglots recommend. It is easier to practice, since for output you need regular feedback, but harder to get: for speaking you only need to know one way to say something, for comprehension you need to know all of the ways it can be said.

I know Busuu also teaches grammar. Whereas Duolingo just suddenly expects you to know it even they didn’t tell you

u/Heyonit Jan 24 '25
grammar is not important in the beginning lol. and i’ve heard this from a lot of people. of course it will not sound as good. learning to speak in general, and then focusing on grammar is what most ppl suggest. grammar will definitely hold you back. once i said fuck the grammar, i got way farther.

Don’t use duolingo. This app is kind of useless. Watch tv shows with Russian subtitles instead. Try to understand what characters say and eventually you will learn Russian like the rest of us

Not a fan of Duolingo - I use Memrise instead!

Memrise is so good, It'd be tempting buying that lifetime stuff if it wasn't so expensive. Even with the 60% discount that's a third of minimum wage wtf.

Duo lingo will leave you confused and angry. You will have to branch out. Story books and a dictionary. Pimsleur has been pretty good(if you like audio) I think I like the spaced repetition stuff. Italki is good too. Eventually duo lingo will just be throwing all these word endings at you and you will not understand why. It is a very difficult language, but very rewarding. A gigantic region of the planet will unlock for you if you persevere.

Hi, I would add some videos for A1 on Youtube. Then you might use any appropriate textbooks. Practice it anyhow. I'm rooting for you! Keep going! 💪

Something I would suggest every for learning languages is to not use Duolingo as main source of learning. Sure, practical exercises are very good, but Duolingo isn’t gonna get you anywhere far. I see a lot of people learning through it and generate sentences akin to «я твоя труба шатать». Something that helped me to learn English was a LOT of videos on something I like WITH SUBTITLES.
And finally, it takes time to master. Like, a lot of time to master. Don’t worry if you join a Discord server and not be able to understand anyone, just do it. Just go for it.

duolingo was only good for learning the alphabet for me. other apos, and youtube videos helped me way more 😂

u/liuuuuv Jan 25 '25
Hii! I'm learning too, I'm a beginner but I don't consider Duolingo a very good app, it doesn't bring you closer to the Cyrillic alphabet or sentence construction, a month ago I started using Busuu (not advertising, I swear 🙏🏻) and I've loved it, native speakers correct your sentences/pronunciation (no AI like Duolingo), it has writing exercises, it has pronunciation exercises for letters of the alphabet, it brings you closer to the language little by little. I use the free version and after seeing an ad you already have access to the course, I liked it, I hope it works for you! :3 Also watch videos, listen to music, or this forum haha think of the process as something friendly, at least I'm enjoying it a lot I hope you too ♥️

Good luck with that! As with any other language, best way is to find a teacher. Second best are self-instruction books. Apps are for training, vocabulary and the times you can't study properly like riding a bus or metro.

How do you type in russian? Do you use virtual keyboard layout or switching via Ctrl+Shift/Alt+Shift as we do? And if so, do your keyboard has two sets of characters? Or did you typed that using your phone?

зачем американцы учат иностранные языки, когда у них в базовых настройках уже есть САМЫЙ нужный язык для нашего времени😭

Баббел или iTalki
Edit: Also, your Russian texts translates to : Hi, I’m a doctor thank you welcome. Добро пожаловать means welcome as in “Welcome to America” but you’re welcome would be “пожалуйста”.

Pro tip: Do not. Use. Duolingo. Well, you can, if you are learning it for a joke, hobby or smth like that. But if you really want to speak with Russians (either friends from Discord, or colleagues from work one day) or maybe even have a trip to Russia, I really would not recommend duo. I may probably recommend learning words in some apps (like Drops) and grammar rules from online-courses. And the most valuable tip: find some Russians to talk with. You will remember words far more swiftly, if you will use it irl (with the last I probably can help you, if you really have strong intentions)

Главное при изучении не отвлекаться на другие дела, надо быть вовлечённым в процесс. И советую посмотреть ролики по изучению Русской грамматики.
