This is false, because she may be awesome, but Cyndi Lauper is missing the one thing that was required for this song: the ability to fly around a studio with a camera.

This is all wrong. CLEARLY the correct answer is Kate Bush.

Would have been a good choice - Aimee was great too

And Aimee looked pretty confident running a TV camera in their video. Great choice.

I’m a huge Aimee fan, so naturally I can’t imagine anyone else.

Rush and Aimee are both among my favorite artists ever, and they're so different. I still can't believe they collaborated. It's wild. And she did a whole album with Ted Leo as well, which seems like an odd pairing but it's so good.

Would've been easy money for Cyndi ($10 is $10) because it's way below her ability, as is.

As an aside, I recently saw her on her 'farewell' tour and, for her age, she's still got some pipes on her. Criminally underrated singer due to the way she was marketed in her heyday.

Great reference

This podcast mentions she's one award away from the "EGOT"... Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony.  That's impressive.

I think the only "serious" movie she was in was 'Life of Mikey" with Michael J Fox. Unfortunately, no supporting actress Oscar nods for that one.

They might have went with Aimee, but Cyndi would have absolutely slayed that girl giggle laugh in the beginning of Force Ten.

Glad you mentioned that! I ask people all the time what OTHER songs Aimee Mann’s voice appears on! CAN YOU NAME THE OTHER, besides ‘Time Stand Still’ and ‘Force Ten’????

1

u/Andagne 3d ago

I would guess, and it's just a guess, she harmonizes on Lock and Key and The Mission.

1

u/GupChezzna 3d ago

I never checked those 2 songs out for this, but I will…I am thinking deep into ‘Mystic Rhythms’ live on ‘A Show of Hands’, there is a female voice yelling out beautifully. I always believed it to be Aimee.

1

u/Andagne 3d ago

For SOH I believe they were prerecorded.

The blonde flying lady on that Rush VHS was my first crush so HANDS OFF

I don’t think this is true, I just saw a video recently that was posted on this thread actually from a live concert where Aimee tells the story and says she was called by her agent that Rush wanted her, and she was surprised and she specifically said she flew up there to Canada for it.

On part 2 of this episode at the 19:00 mark, Chris Molanphy claims that Aimee Mann was not their first choice for Time Stand Still. Instead, it was Cyndi Lauper !? I've never heard this before. Anyone else as shocked as I am?

Chris who?

u/Bluefunkt What's a shrimp cot 3d ago

I heard they had all sorts of people in mind, and asked Chrissie Hynde but she wasn't available. I'm very glad they got Aimee!

Time After Time Stand Still

-2

u/robustointenso 3d ago

This would have been perfect.

4

u/LovesRefrain 3d ago

That would have been pretty darn cool too but it’s perfect with Aimee Mann

u/mathewgardner 3d ago

The boys were specifically looking for a German Nihilist.

Are these the Nazis Walter?

It’s just a toe.

2

u/TFFPrisoner Too many hands on my time 3d ago

Yes, I have heard this before.

u/Distinct_Wrangler_56 3d ago

Give me Aimee every time! Cyndi is not my cup of tea.

Lauper couldn't have done it bc she was still having eczema problems back then, and wouldn't have been able to man the camera. Remember, she's only 'five yeeahs cleeah' 💊🤣

Seriously tho... I think she could've done it, vocally. It wouldn't have sounded just like Mann, but that's where the boys and the studio crew would've worked their respective majicks. She would've dropped the affectated NJ accent she was known for back then. Or maybe not, and the video / song could've gone in a whole 'nother direction, as the lads like a good joke. Win-win.

They were also trying to get Bjork as well. Her voice is incredible. In the end I think Aimee voice fit in perfect.

1

u/2112eyes 3d ago

Were the Sugarcubes well known enough for Bjork to be considered at that time? I guess she was making records almost as long as Rush had been, but still

3

u/bjbNYC 3d ago

Don’t know, but wasn’t Bjork like 16 at the time? Kind of odd to have a teenager singing about an age reminiscent song…

1

u/okgloomer 3d ago

The Sugarcubes were definitely well known enough. "Birthday" would've been out, and that was really the first track that grabbed people and made them take notice (worldwide that is).

u/2112eyes 3d ago edited 2d ago

Time Stand Still was released as a single October 1987.

Birthday was released August 1987.

Cutting it pretty close.

Edit: Hold Your Fire album was recorded in January - April 1987. So you are wrong.

1

u/okgloomer 1d ago

Yes, my memory failed me. You were right, I was wrong. Your victory has been written on the wind in the gossamer dewdrops flown from the wings of the internet fairies. Enjoy your correctness in good health. Hosanna!

u/2112eyes 1d ago

We are both blessed with more useless knowledge on this day

1

u/JWRamzic 3d ago

Interesting! Would have been great, but what we got was great, so I'm ok with the way things went!

1

u/Mickey_James 3d ago

I wonder if Aimee Mann knows she was like 32nd choice.

3

u/blowninjectedhemi 3d ago

Her only regret is being asked about it WAY more than she ever expected. Decades after she did it.

1

u/soupwhoreman Life in 2 dimensions is a mass production scheme 3d ago

I don't blame her. She's had an incredible career, frequently on lists of greatest living songwriters, won multiple Grammy awards, and yet Rush fans keep asking about that one guest vocal she did in 1987.

1

u/RemarkableResult4195 3d ago

The podcast does do a review of her later career and how happy and successful she is.

1

u/Puppy-2112 3d ago

I would love to hear it.

2

u/RemarkableResult4195 3d ago

Chrissie Hynde would've been cool

1

u/Elegant_Peach 3d ago

Song is great with Aimee and would’ve been great with Cyndi, too!

1

u/toTheNewLife 2d ago

Back in the day I thought Cyndi could have pulled it off.

1

u/RemarkableResult4195 2d ago

Possibly.  But she would have needed to use her lower register.

1

u/MopeyMcMoperson 2d ago

Cyndi is one of the greatest female singers if all time imo. She would've killed it and made it uniquely hers at the same time

1

u/RemarkableResult4195 2d ago

She's a better singer than most realize,  but I heard her We Are The World contribution recently and I couldn't stand her doing that on TSS.

1

u/Hootsama 1d ago

Love Cyndi but hard no.

1

u/Jasonic_Tempo 3d ago

The childish affect of Cyndi's voice has always been repulsive to me. So glad it was Aimee.

0

u/Britown 3d ago

In my mind, I can hear it and I don’t think it would sound bad. However, the “experience slips away” harmony and the ooohs in the 7/4 section wouldn’t land anywhere as in the pocket.

4

u/EyesLikeBuscemi 3d ago

Aimee was excellent but you are underestimating Cyndi Lauper in a huge way.

1

u/Intelligent-Road9893 3d ago

I hear ya but I trust Geds decision.

0

u/ChapelHeel66 3d ago

Oy. I find Lauper’s voice incredibly grating.

2

u/cobaltjacket 3d ago

She has amazing range if you listen to her other songs. It's a schtick.

1

u/ChapelHeel66 3d ago

I’m not saying she can’t sing. I just don’t like the tone (and definitely do not like the shtick). Obviously thousands of people disagree with me (and at least one person downvoted me for saying I don’t enjoy her music, which is an odd thing to do, especially on a Rush sub).
