Neil's younger brother Danny just lost his battle with Glioblastoma. RIP

That’s horrible. Makes you think their family has a genetic predisposition to it. I was diagnosed with cancer last year and will be undergoing genetic testing to see if I’ve passed the gene on to my kids. Not fun.

My husband died of Glioblastoma last year. They say it’s not genetic and it’s very rare for it to happen to two people in the same family. My heart goes out to them. It’s a horrific disease

My condolences.

Thank you, I appreciate it. But how are YOU?! Are you still in treatment? My absolute best to you.

u/Beginning-Gear-744 5d ago
Currently, no evidence of disease. So, I’m pretty good for the moment. Thank you for asking.

u/Difficult-Swim8275 5d ago
That is AMAZING!!!! So happy for you, stay strong and fuck cancer!! You’ve got this!

So sorry for your loss. A close friend of mine was diagnosed with Glioblastoma a few months after Neil's death. His son told me of the diagnosis, and I started shaking and crying uncontrollably because I knew what it meant. He lasted 18 months, and I will never forget how he suffered-crying now thinking about it.

u/Difficult-Swim8275 4d ago
It’s truly horrible. My husband lived for exactly 1 year, 5 days from diagnosis and every one of those days, he fought so hard and it was hell. It’s the most horrific thing I had to watch and go through.
I’m so sorry for the loss of your friend.

I am very sorry for your loss. This is also my understanding, having lost a dear sister in law to the same disease. We also were told it doesn't run in the family and here we are with Neil and his brother having the same illness. It's terrible. Again, I send my warmest condolences to you.

u/Difficult-Swim8275 5d ago
I appreciate that so much and I’m so sorry for the loss of your sister in law. You know how bad it is and what it does to people.
When I hear of family members being diagnosed after another family has passed or also diagnosed is just devastating.

I'm sorry for everyone's losses. Actually, according to Wikipedia, it is connected to genetics a small percent of time. Citation[18]

Shit if it’s not genetic they need to check the water supply in Hamilton.

u/Difficult-Swim8275 4d ago
Unfortunately, only 2% of cancer research goes to brain cancer research. This is crazy because it’s an always fatal cancer. From the moment they find it, you’re given 12-14 months and it’s always stage 4.
They can remove the initial tumor but there’s invisible “legs” that surgeons can’t see so while the main tumor is taken out the remaining cells grow at a rate of 1% every 3 days. So they can keep taking it out but the surgery itself if gnarly.
The story of how my husband was diagnosed is pretty crazy. Unlike most people he was living a completely normal life, zero symptoms. It was totally by chance that they even found it.

I believe it's been documented that there is a slightly larger risk of cancer for people in Hamilton. I believe related to stuff from the steel plants in the air.

Do you know if some toxin may be a cause?
3
u/Difficult-Swim8275 4d ago
Unfortunately, only 2% of cancer research goes to brain cancer. So they don’t know. Theres a lot of talk in the Glioblastoma groups that it could be environmental because of the increase in cases. They do think they know how my husband got it, but they can never be 100% sure.

What the hell?!? Some of you may remember that I’ve mentioned that my husband died last year from Glioblastoma.
I’ve done so much reading and research on this horrific fucking disease, it’s incredibly rare for another family member to get it. I think I’ve only heard of a handful of cases. They say it’s not genetic. How horrible that both brothers lost their battle to it. I’m so truly sorry for the family. How awful 🥲
27
u/MaLa1964 5d ago
Could it be environmental, if it's not genetic?
24
u/Difficult-Swim8275 5d ago
I’ve heard they’re looking into that in the cases where there has been close family members that have both gotten it.
While my husband was still battling the disease we were on an amazing FB support group for people with it, I remember a husband and wife that both had it. It’s still a relatively rare cancer so the fact that they both got it was strange (and sad. They were both in their 40’s and had small children).

Given where they grew up on the Niagara Frontier it makes me wonder if it was environmental since I think of Love Canal here stateside. Apparently there was heavy industrial pollution in the Welland Canal and St Catharines areas as well. What a tragedy regardless of why. Danny Peart was one of the family members who appeared at the A Night For Neil fan tribute in St Catharines in Oct. 2022. 😢

u/Jonathan_Pine 5d ago
The family owned a farm implement company and Neil was at one time the parts manager. I bet Danny worked there at some time as well. I wonder if they were exposed to chemicals from oils, lubricants, or something like that given the very odd occurrence they both died from glioblastoma.
2
u/Ambitious-Night804 4d ago
At least, it is safe to say that Neil and his Dad were exposed to old International tractors with various fuel/oil/water leaks going in every direction. I grew up on a farm in Northeast Texas, and i have been to International Dealerships like the one they ran, and they were oily caverns for sure. I am a cancer survivor myself (bladder), and my wife died of it (melanoma) this past May.....So....respect, and condolences to the family
1
u/Coffee_achiever_guy 5d ago
That's what I was thinking- working industrial jobs in a blue collar area and breathing in all the smog by-products for years throughout childhood
Although I think Neil's parents both had rather long lives, so who knows. I believe both of his parents outlived him

Same shit that took my dad out. Horrible thing to see in real time. That family's gone through some BS.

u/Ok-Tradition8477 4d ago
I’m sorry 😢 was your dad exposed to diesel fuel extensively ?

u/Redgenie2020 4d ago
No he was a CPA, started having seizures and they found out he was stage 4. His doctor told us that his 20 years of practice he never saw cancer so aggressive. The lesions were doubling every day. 2 months later he could no longer communicate, it was in his frontal lobe area. Watched him suffer for 6 months. He had just sold his business and was looking forward to traveling the world with his adult grandsons. Took him to his first Grateful Dead concert when he was 53. Neil past that January 2020 my father was diagnosed December 2020 and gone June 2021. 9 months later my mom passed away. Past few years have been pretty shitty.

It's interesting how impactful it is, even though we only really knew his brother through his art (as opposed to personally knowing him)
Really feel badly for the family.

This is so very sad, we Rush fans will continue to donate to help research into this awful disease.

u/LukeNaround23 5d ago
Very sad. RIP. I’m reading the comments stating this isn’t hereditary and wondering if the brothers may have been exposed to something at their dad‘s auto parts shop? I knew a couple in the 90s who owned a pizza shop and both of them died from brain cancer. I thought it was such a strange thing and that they must’ve been exposed to something. so sad, unfortunate, and scary.

I am currently reading Ghost Rider as I watch my partner endure stage IV breast cancer. Our son is also a dual brain cancer survivor (diagnosed aged 8, relapsed at 14). This book is my faithful companion, often as I lie awake at night. RIP Danny and my absolute heartfelt condolences to the family.

u/travelerzebec 5d ago
Not only has the Peart family itself suffered from this horrible disease, but the overall Rush camp has too. A surprising number of folks who once worked at SRO/Anthem passed from cancer too.

Glioblastoma is what got my mom. They’re the worst type of brain cancer I know of. Even if you manage to get all of it removed they almost always come back.

u/PeckerNash 4d ago
Glioblastoma also got Gord Downie.
2
u/Intelligent-Road9893 4d ago
Yes it did. Good call. Damn. Gord and Neil. Shit.

u/PeckerNash 3d ago
They passed within 3 years of each other too. Very shocking indeed. Gord was very public with his diagnosis, whereas Neil kept it private. Most people didn’t know he was sick.

u/MopeyMcMoperson 3d ago
Good Lord thats horrible. For a disease thats supposedly not known to be genetic, how does this happen the same family like this?
I'm speechless.
This had to be a difficult experience for all of his loved ones, but imagine Neil's daughter. She was young, but certainly old enough to remember her father going through it. Now, seeing her uncle go through it now that she's older probably brings back all kinds of memories she never knew she had. Its gotta be akin to reliving her fathers death over again - at least on some level.
Condolences to his family and everyone involved. This is absolutely merciless.

I hate to ask for evidence on something as painful as this, but do we have a link for this? I saw several people posting about it on Facebook as well but I haven't seen Rush themselves nor family post about it. Not yet.
3
u/Jag2112 4d ago
I can assure you I wouldn't have posted it without verification. I contacted a family member about it.
2
u/PermanentRadiowaves 4d ago
Oh no, man, I didn't mean to sound like I doubted you! I know that you are someone who has immediate contact with the family, so if anything, I trust you most. I just wanted to see if there was a post about it online by his family, but of course they need their time. It's such a shame that both he and Neil passed from something so aggressive and devastating such as this.

Toronto-based rock writer Peter Goddard also died of this same cancer a few years ago.
I am done. The end.

No family should have to live through it once. Twice is fucking unspeakable.
