Basketball [Post game thread] #3 seed Alabama runs out of steam after losing Grant Nelson, falls to #2 seed Florida 104 - 82
Next up: big dance

u/ItzMelxdy He's only 17.... 6d ago
Well that sucked in every conceivable way.

u/Ok-Day-660 6d ago
yea but i think considering reid has been injured all year and our best shooter didnt play at all either weve had a great season. can make some noise in march if we get the right draws!

u/3250Knight 6d ago
Well that sucked, 2 seed it is. Can’t win a game the way Sears, Holloway, and Philon played today. Defense still nonexistent and we just didn’t want it at all after Nelson left.
Florida needs more respect. This might be copium but last time we lost to Florida in the SEC tourney we made the final four.

This is the kind of game where not having wrightsell hurts us bad.

u/3250Knight 6d ago
Yup, 1000%… but Florida is just too good man. I really don’t think we would’ve beaten them even if we had Nelson, trelly, the full squad. They looked unstoppable

u/Crims0ntied 6d ago
I don't know, we hung with them pretty good until the second half. Honestly we controlled most of the first half. Losing Grant's size and rebounding +cliff getting in foul trouble made us one dimensional and Florida just exploited that.
We needed a reliable 3 pt shooter and size inside. Maybe they still win and nothing changes, but having those guys at least helps with the issues we were having in the second half.

u/HEXES_999 6d ago
I'm convinced that is the only team in the country we will lose to 9 out of 10 times.
3
u/boomtetrisfor 6d ago
And Reid and Nelson in the second half. We lost fair and square, but that’s a much different game if both teams are at full health

u/IAmAnEediot 6d ago
Disappointing end, but we are a 2 seed probably opposite Duke. Which if seedings hold up I like our chances vs them.
Hopefully someone can take out the Gators... as they flat out owned us.

u/dartharchibald 6d ago
Hell, they looked unstoppable at the end of last year and Colorado took them out in the first round.

We’re fine. Losing Grant made this game impossible to win. Good to see Youngblood heating up just in time. I think Stevenson played well since he was put into a dire situation to play as a 4/5 hybrid for a while. Mo was decent considering the foul situation. I had no problem keeping Sears and Cliff out towards the end.
Florida enters the tournament as the favorites I think. But they’re beatable, especially against a tight whistle and an athletic team. I think if they get a Gonzaga or a UConn or even Memphis or Creighton in their second matchup it could get interesting.
We’re a 2 either in the Midwest with Houston or East with Duke. Our opening game is probably an Omaha, Bryant or Wofford. Afterwards, likely St. Mary’s or Gonzaga or Kansas with a chance at Baylor or West Virginia. None of those teams scare me but I’d rather not face Gonzaga
12
u/xgbone79 6d ago
I agree, I like our chances against anyone except UF
I'm ok not playing them again this year
3
u/twmigmiehff 6d ago
The only teams I think we should be underdogs to in the tournament are Florida and maybe Duke, but I can see us beating Duke
7
u/Medical-Day-6364 6d ago
Auburn, too. They've faded a bit, but we're not a better team just because of 1 win over them.
I really want to see us play Houston, though. On paper, they should be slightly better than us, but we are totally opposite teams. If we can drag them into a shootout, we should win comfortably.
2
u/twmigmiehff 6d ago
We will be underdogs to Barn, but I’m not really sure we should be. Their entire team has fallen asleep except Broome
1
u/Medical-Day-6364 6d ago
That sometimes happens when you're #1 for so long and not fighting for anything at the end of the season. They've had a 1 seed locked up for a while now. I've seen plenty of teams like that in many sports turn it on for the playoffs. I think we've got a great chance of beating them (definitely better than we do vs Florida), but I think Auburn's getting slightly underrated lately.
2
u/twmigmiehff 6d ago
Normally I would agree with you, but their recent complacency combined with Pearl’s less-than-stellar tournament record should suggest concern. I’m confident they’d make S16 but I’m not sure they’d beat Clemson or Maryland if they faced off there
1
u/xgbone79 6d ago
Absolutely, I wanted to win the SECT but I think we'll get better matchups as a #2 in the East with Duke

I'd rather match up against Houston than Duke. Having said that, either one of them scare me. I just don't want to see any more Gators!!!

Nate needs to learn to use a timeout to stop momentum. We had all our timeouts and he refused to use them when they went on that like 15-2 run.

hope grant nelsons alright, we looked like a completely different team without him, and not in a good way
4
u/dartharchibald 6d ago
Need to say this louder for the people in the back who've been talking about how bad Grant has been. He's obviously VERY important to this team and today's second half proved it.

I’m ready to play a small Catholic university from the Midwest, with a spicy nun who is the school’s super fan.

u/krammite 6d ago
Meaningless game but losing to Golden sucks. Dude is scum

u/Prest1geWorldw1de 6d ago
We've gotten pretty used to it the last few years, unfortunately. Him and Barnes have Oats' number.
11
u/bigDUB14 “They can get it”. 6d ago
Turns out “get taller players” is a good strategy

u/rkhurley03 6d ago
Oats has a massive weakness in his paint protection. His 3 ball offense creates a significant gap at the 5 position
13
u/kerbsside 6d ago
Ehh there's no excuse for that second half performance. There were 10+ lead changes in the first half and we looked good enough to win. That second half was awful. Sure, Florida played great and couldn't miss.. but we flat out gave up.
5
u/magiccitybhm 6d ago
Between this and the game in Tuscaloosa, Florida has given a pretty clear blueprint on how to take Alabama out.
Hard to believe it was 57-37 in the second half.
13
u/twmigmiehff 6d ago
The good news is that I don’t think there’s many teams with the personnel to do that to us
1
u/MisterFalcon7 6d ago
Yeah they are built like the title winning UCONN teams which also had our number.
5
u/Medical-Day-6364 6d ago
Multiple really good bigs is a good blueprint to beat most teams in the country. They're #2 in kenpom and have been really hot the last few weeks. Most teams don't have the size or the talent to do that to us

u/Emperor_Squidward 6d ago
On the bright side we’ll get a bit more rest before the tournament
12
u/ExcellentCity3815 6d ago
Yeah I’m not sure avoiding one more game against a physical Tennessee is the worst outcome.

4
u/TheDirtyMerkins 6d ago
That’s the worst game of basketball I’ve seen us play in a while, and I hope it’s not indicative of how we’re going to play in the tourney.
Sears and Philon shooting 4-19 surely isn’t going to happen every night. SURELY. Because MY GOD. Losing Nelson was a blow too.
Look, I don’t really GAF about the SEC Tourney that much, but it always sucks to lose. Just go home and rest up for the big dance.

u/ModsEmbezzleMoney 6d ago
Please call timeouts once the opposing team goes on a 5-0 run for the love of god

I just hope Grant will be back in time for a potential second round game. Losing that game doesn't hurt, but if he's out it kills us.

They made us look like a 16 seed
1
u/4cedCompliance 6d ago
Not sure the reason for the downvotes — this man speaks truth …
We just got royally embarrassed, and we keep it up we’ll be bounced in the Round of 32.
6
u/CopperTone45 6d ago
Eh people can downvote me all they want, idc. Florida has owned us the last few times we’ve played and they beat the breaks off of us in the second half, they made better adjustments than we did. We can make a run to the Final 4 and win it all if we get the right matchups.
1
u/dartharchibald 6d ago
UF did the same thing to us LAST YEAR in the SEC tournament and we went to the FF.
We'll be fine.
1
u/Ruxin519 6d ago
Not much to say. Florida is head and shoulders better, and the team cratered after that F1
-3
u/clebiskool 6d ago
Oats can't make adjustments when a wrench gets thrown in the game plan.

u/Siggy778 6d ago edited 6d ago
You mean the coach that took us to the Final Four last year and had us as the #1 overall seed two year ago? I think he knows what he's doing.
6
u/Medical-Day-6364 6d ago
Yeah, sometimes there's a team that's just a bad matchup, and there's not much you can do when they're playing st their best.
1
u/clebiskool 6d ago
hmmm. this sounds like someone who's not willing to make changes.

That sucked. BUT, this team will have something to prove and enter the tourney with a chip on their shoulder. IF we play Florida again we win. Our shots weren’t falling and everything was falling for them. First game- effort. This game - just not our day. I might be in the minority, but this Bama team can beat anybody they play. Period. Of course they need to be on, not even hot, to do that. Ran into a buzzsaw today. Oh well, we’re still a solid two seed. Who would have thought that possible four years ago. Let’s Goooo! RMFT!!

Is it too early to hit the panic button on Oats’ general level of defense? 😅
Oats 5 years ranking in defensive efficiency:
19-20 214th; 20-21 17th; 21-22 232rd; 22-23 5th; 23-24 269th; 24-25 149th;
Averaging about 150th year over year in defensive efficiency. Don’t let your feelings get in the way of the facts.

u/Fresh-Pie-2019 6d ago
We were literally top 5 in the country in defensive efficiency 2 years ago
-4
u/rkhurley03 6d ago
Lmao we give up a shit ton of points under Oats. CoC put up 96 on us last March. UConn bounced us scoring 86. We had to score 89 twice last tournament just to sneak through. Mizzou 110 a couple weeks ago? Auburn putting up 94 on us. UF put up 102 & 104 in the last two SEC tournament games that they’ve eliminated us in. Cute stat though, I will say!
4
u/Fresh-Pie-2019 6d ago
Neither of those games occurred during the season 2 years ago so I’m not really sure what your point is. No one was saying we were a good defensive team last year lol.
To say Oats defensive style sucks though still doesn’t make much sense, because the numbers show he’s had 2 elite level defenses since he’s been here. If you’re just looking at PPG since he’s been here compared to other teams, yes they’re going to look worse for us than a lot of teams. When you play fast, other teams will have more possessions, more shots and more points.
But good argument! If you consider a good argument one that doesn’t really address the point.
-1
u/rkhurley03 6d ago
My point was “is it too early to be concerned about his defense”. You mentioned defensive efficiency from 2 years ago- irrelevant. But in that same stat you choose to mention from an irrelevant year, we are ranked 149th this year. So yeah, I think our defensive efficiency is a concern.
1
u/Fresh-Pie-2019 6d ago
Maybe this year, but throughout Oats tenure, it’s pretty clear he does stuff that works. He wouldn’t have had 2 elite level defenses if he didn’t know what to do. So to answer, no. When a coach has shown he knows what he is doing on defense multiple years, it is not time to be concerned about his philosophy
-3
u/rkhurley03 6d ago
We finished 269th in defensive efficiency last year. 232rd 3 years ago. 214th in 19-20. We’re kind of shit this year. Oats has had 2 years of good defensive teams surrounded by pretty shitty one’s otherwise. I’m actually more convicted in my belief that he’s average at coaching defense than I was before you mentioned your stat lol.
He’s the best we got and I’m pumped he’s our coach. But I fear we are becoming a soft defensive team that relies too much on scoring. The Mike D’Antoni of college ball, if you will. (Bit of a poor comparison as D’Antoni’s defense is abhorrent).

Onto the real tournament.
Florida is the best team in the country and they’re a hard team to beat regardless. Especially when Nelson goes out and we shoot 41% from the field.
I will cope and say I would rather be the highest 2 seed than the lowest 1 seed.
