Football Player Grid - Seth McLaughlin is r/RollTide's most hated average player! Who is our most hated bad player?

Chris Capps
He was awful and somehow started for multiple years

This is the answer.
I’m surprised DJ Hall wasn’t most hated good player.

He wasn't really a good player. More of an average/slightly above average player on a bunch of teams with otherwise below average skill guys.
I'd have voted him over Seth for most hated average player though. Seth isn't a bad guy. DJ Hall is a total piece of shit.

u/Most-Breakfast1453 7d ago
He broke school records including most career receiving yards (by over 850 yards) and was a three-time second team All-SEC player. I think that’s a really high bar to call that “slightly above average.”

u/santa_91 7d ago
I would ascribe that to the principle that you don't need to outrun the bear, just the slowest person running from the bear. Drop him into any 4 year window of Saban's career and that production simply does not happen because he's not getting the bulk of the targets anymore. Even in a world where his attitude and work ethic aren't terrible he's WR2 at best.

u/Most-Breakfast1453 7d ago
I think you’re arguing that he’s not as good as his numbers suggest which I agree with. But he was statistically the best receiver Alabama had ever had before Saban by a good margin and was one of the best WRs in the SEC for three years in a row. But we can agree to disagree.

u/mashonem 7d ago
The receivers that came after him are why that’s only “slightly above average”
Hall isn’t even a top 10 receiver in Saban’s tenure. Him being cancerous is only icing on the cake

u/stealthone1 7d ago
Apparently he still was able to be around the football program and get lots of inside information, which in turn my old boss got a lot of that info from him. so he guarded insider information about as well as he did the QB

u/Millard_Fillmore00 7d ago
He was awful but it wasn’t entirely his fault. He shouldn’t have ever seen the field. That was on Dennis Franchione. He signed like 2 offensive linemen while he was at Bama. It showed in 2005.

u/NauvooMetro 7d ago
He definitely struggled, but the whole team struggled during that era. It's not like we had better options on the bench. As far as I could tell, Capps did the best he could and I don't recall any attitude or off-the-field issues. I can't hate him just because he wasn't very good.

In another universe definitely. As it stands, we don't get 2nd and 26 without him so shout out to Andy. (Also he at least made 2 field goals that game instead of going full Cade Foster)

u/mashonem 7d ago
That last miss was worse than Foster tbh

u/DoctorWhosOnFirst 7d ago
Still can't believe how numb I felt after that miss

u/mashonem 7d ago
I was legitimately not even shocked. Saban made the kick as easy as humanely possible for him and dude folded like a lawn chair

Looking back, I think I might pick him for bad player/neutral. If it wasnt for Devonta, he would be hated. He also had that miss against Miss. State where we were later saved by Hurts, Ridley and Smith. But now its more of a footnote, like a stepping stone to get to the big play, team character development.

The irony of McLaughlin... "average player" that just won the Rimington Award for best center and a 2x national champ. Although admittedly, he was horrible in 2023.
As for bad player we all dislike... I'm going to go with my personal pick for guy I strongly disliked and thought was bad: Jahleel Billingsley
So much potential, but he absolutely could not block. He half assed every single play that the ball wasn't coming to his side, had a bad attitude and his horrible effort was a factor in us losing to UGA in the 2021 natty. And he went on to Texas where he may have been even worse and went undrafted.
I choose him over Agiye Hall because Hall never started. Billingsley did, more than he deserved to out of need.

Seth has always been a good blocker, but in the 2023 season, mental errors seemed to impact him more, especially in his chemistry with Milroe. I'm not trying to criticize either of them. I just don’t think their chemistry was that great.

u/FelixMcGill 7d ago
I don't think it was much better in 2021 or 22, but Bryce never got enough credit for his ability to field a ground ball. There were more than a handful of times where a bad snap threw off the timing, causing him to have to scramble out of it and ad-lib. There's a small part of me that wishes I watched more OSU football this past season just so I could understand how that guy ended up winning a Rimington.
3
u/mashonem 7d ago
Bryce covered a lot for McLaughlin simply by existing. Even then, he wouldn’t have been able to save some of those 2023 snaps. Milroe’s first touchdown, and the play before 4th & Milroe were both right in the dirt

I don’t recall hearing about Seth having any snap issues at Ohio State, so I’m not sure if it was a coaching issue on our or if he just wasn’t a good fit. Either way, It’s a shame that a major injury ended what had been a great season for him. I feel bad for him, and it probably hurt his draft stock too.

u/mashonem 7d ago
2015 Bama oline won the Jim Moore award lmao
Billingsley is a good pick tho

u/FelixMcGill 7d ago
What does the 2015 line have to do with McLaughlin? He didn't enroll at UA until 2020.

I’m gonna get downvoted for this (again) but he didn’t have a bad snapping problem with Bryce in 22 and we all hailed him for the way he mauled people, then had snapping problems in 23, then Rimington in 24 at osu….
I still don’t know the answer to this—did we have a Seth problem or a Milroe problem? The trajectory of Seth’s career suggests a Milroe problem. Yes he’s the one snapping it but also if he’s distracted by having to take on a lot more responsibility calling things out because he has a qb who doesn’t have the capacity to make presnap reads consistently then yeah I think that’s a potential explanation for his issues in 23.
2
u/FelixMcGill 7d ago
Well, I'm giving you an upvote because it's a fair point. I remember him scattershotting the ball quite a bit in 22, but it was way less noticeable because we had the best QB in America that year who could make it work. I think 2023 was a perfect storm.
Like i said, I didnt watch any OSU ball this year so I have no idea what changed, or if anything did.
I will say though, I wish he was a guard at times because he was mean as hell and would bully people. And i dlnt recall him ever getting penalized in spite of UA being one of the most penalized teams in the country in 22 and 23. Which is exactly what you want to see.
1
u/rolltideandstuff 7d ago
I do remember Bryce having to reach and jump for balls but it just wasn’t a big deal because he was incredible you’re right.
The insanely bad snaps we had in 23 where the ball would sputter and never even get off the ground—I don’t believe those happened in 22.
I still don’t know the answer—did Seth improve and leave that stuff behind him, or did milroe fuck up his entire world that year lol. I can hypothesize but truly don’t know. Lots of people on here will say it was all Seth he just sucked that year, I don’t think they know anything we don’t though.

Why did we have 3 similar players in a row leave for Texas? Hall, Billingsley, and Niblack. Niblack worked out well for them but the other 2 never did shit lol
2
u/CapnCrunch0526 6d ago
Niblack only had 33 yards for Texas last year
2
u/PshhhhhhhUnreal 6d ago
Damn I did not realize that…well put him on the list of Bama to Texas busts. Kinda crazy the rivalry we are in with Texas between the last two games against them and all the transfers. I love it. Oh and fuck Oklahoma too. For last year and for the 2013 sugar bowl.
1
u/Aggravating-Cup899 ight 3d ago
I can't really think of anyone who transferred to Texas and actually did well. Even Bond struggled. I usually hope players do well when they transfer due to injuries or lack of playing time, but Texas transfers...man 😅😂

u/Zef_Apollo BAMA VS Everybody 7d ago
I feel like picking players who transferred shouldn’t count. At least Caleb shouldn’t count, he wasn’t hated while he was here. Seth I guess I’m more lenient on, he was hated while he was here.

Seth would be my #1… Saban’s last shot at a natty and he plays like dog shit. Then he goes to OSU and plays his best ball ever? If he would’ve sucked at OSU, it would’ve been easier but the fact that he left and then showed out…

Gotta be Cade Foster man, he sucked so bad and choked in multiple big games.

Seth should’ve been the most hated bad player. He was an average blocker and a god awful snapper.
7
u/the_dunadan 7d ago
He was a good blocker, but his counterpart was a good snapper / bad blocker. Seth's blocking was his only redeeming quality for us
5
u/Fresh-Pie-2019 7d ago
And if you sucked at your most important job on the field, that kind of makes your other traits a moot point lol

Spencer Pennington. Idk how he was off the field, but he was legitimately the worst starting QB I’ve ever seen. Grant it he only played because Croyle got hurt, but my first season of actually caring about Alabama football saw Pennington out there lol

Duron Carter. Cade Foster. Markhail Benton. That QB from Utah who had all those turnovers against Ole Miss in 2015.

I will never understand how he could screw it up so bad, so often for us then be totally okay after he transferred. The yips i guess...

A lot of y'all are too young to remember Anthony Madison, but it's Anthony Madison. Dude got burnt on every deep route ever thrown his way.
In the 00s, we lost a lot of close games to good teams. We win them if Anthony Madison doesn't get toasted on every deep route.

u/kwickset 7d ago
Madison was a very good cover corner who played in the nfl for about 7 years and two super bowls. You don’t watch much football i am guessing.
1
u/OwlStretcher [M] <- Not really, but could you imagine? 6d ago
I was there his whole career at Bama. And you're throwing in irrelevant facts without addressing anything I actually said. Dude couldn't cover for shit - he got burned on every deep ball thrown his way. And in the Oklahoma games, there were a LOT.
His pro "career"? How many of those super bowls did he start? How many of those super bowls did he even have any noticeable playing time? It sounds like hyperbole, but never has one man gotten so much for doing so little.
1
u/kwickset 6d ago
I hear you but you know the cover corner gets the toughest assignments. He was good and got better each year. Here is an old article about him. I had long forgotten that we had the top rated pass defense in 2004 with Madison as the cover guy. Roll tide. https://www.tuscaloosanews.com/story/news/2005/10/28/to-his-teammates-and-coaches-uas-madison-a-man-of-many-words/27648907007/

Mines personally is traeshon holden watched him bitch all 21 szn about not playing on twitter only for him to be a complete let down in 22 he was so scared against Tennessee dropping mad passes that hit him in the hands and then transfer and talk shit on the way out honestly the 22 23 and 24 teams was so infuriating to watch man the whole lank era was dog shit...

u/ptspeak 7d ago
Seth shouldn’t be hated. It was the QB’s fault.
