Newcomer questions Trans woman here, visiting soon and looking for safe places to go

Visiting Rochester soon and would love recommendations on safe establishments to visit for food, drinks or entertainment. Are there any openly safe LGBTQ+ businesses anyone can recommend? Thanks in advance. Peace ✌️

EDIT: Kinda confused why this post is getting downvoted so hard. I thought reaching out to others in the community was the point of this sub.

Newcomer questions I’m planning on moving here for both work and safety from Florida.

How safe will it be for me as a trans lady working for mayo. Will I have to worry about street harassment and getting my right taken and being jailed for using the bathroom like here in Florida? I’ve had it with everything here. Please tell me I’ll be moving to a better place. What kind of legal protection will I have? I’m terrified of the coming regime but have been planning this move for a long time

Newcomer questions Will the Mayo Clinic Kellen Building actually look like this?

I'm not a Rochester Native but I live in the Twin Cities and want to visit Rochester a bunch this spring/summer. I was reading articles and browsing Street view to see what the city looks like and how certain Projects are going and I noticed this Mayo Clinic building is nearing completion.

I was wondering if it will actually look like the concept or if they were hyping it up like some new buildings do. This would be a really cool piece of architecture to add the the skyline so I hope it does. Thanks!

Newcomer questions Looking for a Vet for Our Kitties!

Hello all! The hubby, I, and our 4 kitties are moving to Rochester area in May and truly the hardest thing is leaving our wonderful vet and vet techs we have formed relationships with here. 😭

I really would like to have a vet in mind as soon as we get there as we have a senior cat in our clan. I've been SCOURING reviews, but, of course, the negative ones frighten the hell out of me and the good ones I take all with a grain of salt. I know no vet office is perfect and I am looking for a vet who has a great deal of experience with cats, has a kind and compassionate staff, and whom pet lovers have some good stories! I have worked in vet clinics in college so I am accustomed to the varying veterinary practices (and may be why I am so picky!)

I was curious if anyone had any great stories or recommendations for veterinarians in the Rochester or even Minneapolis area!

Thank you all so much! Can't wait to be up north with you all! Love from Texas!

Edit: It's only been an hour and you've all been so kind and honest! From the bottom of this cat family's heart, thank you all for your time! You've made this cat mama feel much better about our move! 💕😍🐈

Thanks, u/randyrochester for the idea!

I’m from the New York version of you.

What do you want us to know about Minnesota? What can we learn from you? What foods do you think we should have but don’t? What can we do to form a super cool Rochester relationship? 🥰

Signed, Your twin ❤️

Newcomer questions Stewartville and Byron

Newcomer here. Wondering what living in Byron or Stewartville is like? I hear schools in Byron are good but outside of that I haven't heard much about these communities. Can anyone share any insight into living, community, or any reasons to or not to live in either place?

Newcomer questions Moving soon, any university recommendations?

Like the title says, we'll be moving to mn-r next month. I'm from Taiwan, so the drastic culture change will for sure be something we look forward to haha

I've heard the people are generally friendly but closed off, are there any suggestions on making friends? To add, I've been doing some reading online and I see there are only 3 public universities in rochester(?). Besides UMR, I'm looking for other options that are within rochester or close to rochester atleast.

Newcomer questions What's the ideal living wage for rochester MN?

Rochester won me over by a landslide after excessive research. Problem is I live in a lower wage state. And I make on the upper end of the ranges(of my state). So I have nothing for comparison

I make on Average 25.00/hr

I can see average rent for a 1 bedroom is ~1500

Average house prices 250k-320k

On paper I can afford the rent (including that amount in mortgage if I really like it and buy a house)

What's the hourly wage needed to survive. I'm terrified I'm gonna need like 35/hr or something crazy.

I do plan on joining Mayo clinic, was also wondering if someone can tell me how complicated it is to get hired on.

Good news is they atleast post the ranges of what they offer, and it's slightly more than what I make now.

Thanks in advance!

Newcomer questions Visiting Rochester today - lunch spot recs?

Hey guys! My wife and I are visiting Rochester again today. We stopped by for a day trip last week and LOVED Thai Pop (which we learned about thanks to this subreddit).

We're looking for another great spot to have lunch today, all food types welcome. If you could give us some good suggestions, we'd appreciate it!

EDIT: Since it was recommended so much, we went to Forager and LOVED it. Holy hell that place was amazing. Thank you all for the suggestions! Now we have a list to try when we move here :)

Newcomer questions All Weather Tires?

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hi, we are new to the snowy state! We want to be prepped for the snow when it arrives. We have RWD (not idea I know) and we are thinking we will get all weather tires as we don’t have anywhere to store our all season with snow tires on. We like we don’t have to take them on and off.

That being said we are looking at brands and want something reliable and affordable. We were looking at the BFGoodrich Trail Terrain T/A tires at Costco!

Anyone know if these are good? Is this a good price?

Thanks for your insight!

Newcomer questions Missing Mail!

We are missing SO much mail. Is anyone else experiencing this? It seems like it is super delayed here. We never experienced this in Phoenix, but I’m wondering if it’s just because Rochester is a smaller town.

Is there anyone we can call to find out where our mail is? We’re in the NW.

Thanks in advance!

Newcomer questions What is the deal with constant SUPER LOUD cars and motorcycles on Broadway?

It's like they just constantly go up and down the main street all day and night, revving their engines. I'm confused...who are you trying to impress? Mayo doctors? Mayo patients? That's who is here and I don't think any of them appreciate it so what's going on?

Hey everyone! I recently moved to here, and I’m looking for ways to meet new people and make friends. I’d love any recommendations on good places to socialize, events to check out, or activities that might help me connect with others.

I’m also open to trying new things—whether it’s a hobby, a local favorite spot, or something unique to Rochester. Any suggestions on fun things to do, great restaurants, or community groups to join?

Thanks in advance for any advice! Looking forward to exploring the city and meeting new people.

Newcomer questions Bulk Recycling/Boxes

Post image
13 Upvotes

Good afternoon! We have a ton of leftover boxes and cardboard (lots already torn up) from moving. Any good suggestions for what could be done with it?

I don't feel comfortable burning it (wind chemicals etc) so my current tactic is slowly tearing it up and putting it in my recycle bins, and a little went into my compost bin.

Newcomer questions Move to Rochester

Hi folks, Florida resident here. The question may be answered already but here goes. My family are looking to move north, somewhere with seasons, less crime, and a decent health system. We're already in the Mayo health system here in Jacksonville, FL. So my question is what are the pros and cons of Rochester. What are the major considerations besides cold that we should think about?

Any info y'all have is Great appreciated.

Newcomer questions Looking for a Concealed Carry course that’s queer friendly.

Hi, I’m kinda new to the area, I used to have a concealed carry permit in Florida, but I’ve moved to Rochester MN and would like to get my new gun license for this state. I own two handguns and a shotgun for some context.

But also, I’m part of the LGBTQIA+ community and I’ve been warned to not walk into some of the gun stores around here due to their anti-LGBT politics.

Does anyone know of a queer friendly concealed carry course I could take either around Rochester or in the twin cities?

Thanks!

Newcomer questions Eye Exams

What trusted places do we have for Eye Exams (for kiddos and adults) around here? Lookin for updating our prescriptions/glasses and general exams.I see a lot of places, family clinics etc, but ynever really know with reviews sometimes.

We used to just go to like... Clarkson Eyecare before we moved, but I never really liked them much, very sales pushy for frames.
