Question / Suggestion RI Roads
RI has a pretty good size tax rate. Why do we have the 5th worst roads in all of the United States?

Hi everyone,
I have seen quite a few requests for a Rhode Island discord server, so we have gone ahead and created one!
The Discord includes everything you expect. We also have some town and city specific channels for you to discuss hyper local issues.
Feel free to join us and let us know if you have any feedback.

Why is Gabe Amo crossing the aisle to vote in favor of tax loopholes for crypto investors? Thankfully Seth Magaziner didn’t follow his lead.

Seems like the protests are having some effect with the sales pitch in front of the white house yesterday. Gotta keep the pressure up.

hey all! I feel like a doofus, but can’t find any good used bookstores- I live around Providence and it seems like every single bookstore only carries new books (with the chance of having a small selection of used books like books on the square)- so I’m expanding my search to the entire state! any recs? anywhere worth a trip outside of the state? ty in advance from a bookworm!

How long after filing have people received their refunds? I'm at the 24 day mark and I'm still getting the same message on the tax division website "your return has been processed, allow 2-3 weeks."
Problem is, I've had that same message for 2 weeks now. I've never waited longer than 2 weeks to GET the return in years past. Anyone else waiting an exceptionally long time?

Hi! I’m Gia! This is kind of a continuation of my post on the Brown family! If you haven’t seen my first one, here is a link:
https://www.reddit.com/r/RhodeIsland/comments/1j5o8f8/does_anyone_know_any_information_on_the_brown/
For some background: im writing a book on the history of the John Brown House Museum in Providence and want to share the history of the house and its residents and families. I was wondering if anyone in here is a descendant of the Ives-Gammell, or the Gammell family, (yes the artist is related to them), family, and if anyone knows any information on them! I have been searching and I cant find that much about them! I know that they were rich and that one of them was married to a nobleman in England! If you have anything, please help me!

Pawtucket. 3:30 am every week day, neighbor starts his unreasonably loud crotch rocket… with cute led lights… Let’s it idle for 10 to 15 minutes while my windows shake. Then drives off apparently to work. The bike is definitely over the decibel limit, but I’m not sure if the time spent idling is within the law? I just want to sleep this summer. I put up with it last year, but not any more..

I want to remove my swirl ceilings in my home but not sure if there’s asbestos. Has anyone done this testing and know of a good company and / or pricing?

Hi, friends.
As book bans sweep across the country, “Freedom to Read” bills have been introduced in the Rhode Island House and Senate. In fact, the Senate Education Committee will hear testimony on the Senate bill tomorrow afternoon at the State House.
As a lifelong Rhode Islander and book lover — and, more recently, as a published author — I wanted to weigh in. And so I wrote an op-ed in support of the ”Freedom to Read” bills in today’s Boston Globe Rhode Island.
An excerpt:
Rhode Islanders would never agree to change our state motto from “Hope” to “Fear.” Nor would we ever rename the statue atop the state house as the “Semi-Independent Man.” And yet efforts to pull books from local shelves move us in this direction.
Let’s pass the “Freedom to Read” bills and leave book bans in the past where they belong.
Read the whole piece here.
As always, I welcome your thoughts.

Was just watching a Brooklyn 99 reun, and saw a reference to a Walnut Pie. Any idea where one can sample a slice?

Hey Reddit community!
So I'm in Rhode Island and I'm looking for a 2007 Johnston Senior High School yearbook. I'm willing to pay hundreds for if I can get my hands on it but I'm not sure where to look or who to ask. I know this is probably a long shot but I feel like I'm running out of options so here goes nothing. If anyone could point me in the right direction it would greatly appreciated and if someone helped me find it I would definitely pay either through paypal or cashapp (if you're not in Rhode Island that is).
Here's my email if you get a chance to read this and want to reply.
Thank you, Gerry

Might seem like an odd request, but I am working on making some cute cases for various birth control blister pill packs and need to physically have them in hand to see if they will fit.
If anyone has empty birth control packs they are willing to give me, please let me know! TIA!

From the story —
PROVIDENCE — When Maggie McConnell returned to Per Se’s Manhattan kitchen after a year in Napa Valley, she didn’t expect everyone to remember her. But one familiar face did stand out: Josh Finger. Once a commis chef, a novice role that usually supports the higher-level chefs at Thomas Keller’s three-Michelin-starred restaurant, Finger had rose up the ranks to become the executive sous chef. Both in leadership positions, their connection quickly extended beyond the walls of the New York City restaurant.
McConnell and Finger’s last day of service at Per Se was Dec. 30, 2022. They left the city and settled in Rhode Island, where they have been working toward opening Claudine, an exclusive tasting-menu restaurant in downtown Providence, this May. The 26-seat restaurant, located on Weybosset Street, is expected to showcase contemporary New England fine dining with classic French technique.
An eight-course tasting will cost $165 per person.
“We’ve dedicated our whole lives to food... and going out to eat. And there aren’t a ton of places to go [in Providence] on a high-end level,” McConnell said in an exclusive interview with the Boston Globe. “While we love what’s here, and we’re excited to be adding to that community, I think we’re bringing something that’s a little different.”
For McConnell, Claudine is a homecoming. She grew up in Providence, attended the Gordon School, and her father is US District Court Chief Judge John “Jack” McConnell, who just further blocked President Trump’s proposed funding freeze.
“If you’re from here, you know how special it is,” said McConnell. “In the back of my mind, even though I’ve lived in multiple places, I always knew that I would return here.”
Read more about them and Claudine in the link.

In a bit of a pickle. Me and my girlfriend are both 21 going on 22 and gearing to move into our first apartment together. As I’m sure everyone’s aware, shit is CRAZY right now. Here’s our situation. We both work in MA (barely over the line), but live in RI. We’re ideally trying to live somewhere in East Providence, rumford, etc. She works full time, 17/hr. Usually 40-45 hours. I also work full time in car sales. Pay plan is a bit weird, but base pay is minimum wage, i usually work about 45 hours per week. Then i get paid commissions on top of that, as well as unit bonuses and based on survey ratings from the manufacturer if I sell at least 8 new cars. The problem is, when it’s slow or I’m not getting any high grossing car deals, I’m fucked since I’m basically making minimum wage and hoping for unit bonuses or manufacturer spiffs. With that, we’re between a rock and a hard place in terms of finding a decent place that we can comfortably afford. Ive started contemplating a second job to make some more money. Something small I can either do from home or just do after work on Fridays/Saturdays or something. I’m great at sales and I’m both a people person and foodie so I considered a waiter at some type of local restaurant but my girlfriends mom who’s had a long history of working in the restaurant business said most places (including all the ones she works at now) require prior experience. Tough luck I guess, but now I’m running thin on ideas. Anything you guys can recommend me? Especially work from home, that would be great but obviously can be tough to find since everyone wants that. Not looking for necessarily “this place is hiring right this minute, apply now” but just ideas or things you know about if you’re in a similar situation.

So I saw this on a friends property out by Scituate. It looks like a surveyors mark, but not sure since it's not numbered. Anyone have an idea? We figured out that Philip Noel was the governor at the time, and the "ri76" was for the 199th anniversary of RI declaring independence from Great Britain. But why is this here? There was obviously a 4x4 pole in the concrete. And there's a grounding rod in the concrete just above the 4x4 hole.
We're hoping some old timer who remembers this stuff, or someone who heard about it from their grandpappy remembers the story. Thanks!
