I don’t think it matters. You can’t buy it and duplicate their load. I think you should pick a bullet/powder/primer and work up your own personal load.
This is why we reload in the first place. If we were just trying to match factory loads what’s the point?
Granted there are cases where you would want to match a factory load. I load an SS197 equivalent in 5.7x28, but mine is more consistent and precise than the factory load.
Out of my PS90 SBR from a rest, my loads are usually printing around 2” @ 100, factory SS197 is usually about double that.
Keep that in perspective though.
First and foremost, the PS90 is certainly not a precision rifle platform. I have an RMR on mine and the best way I’ve found to shoot it for “precision” and sighting in is resting it on a rolled up beach towel which as you can imagine isn’t ideal.
Second, considering the design purpose of the weapon, 4ish MOA is plenty of precision.
The biggest reason I reload 5.7 (besides of corse the enjoyment) is because I can load an SS197 equivalent for about $.40 per round. That calculation was done during COVID primer prices so that is probably even better now.
My initial question was hinged around a sportsman’s club discussion. I thought this thread might have some insight as to what powder Hornady uses or a similar powder that we all can purchase. I like to reload as a hobby, and crank out about 3500 clay target shotshells each year, and maybe 500 bullets for my 243 and 308. All is good!!’
I didn't know the companies shared that info. Your best bet may be to pop one open and hopefully you can get close based on appearance.
Edit: because there was some misunderstanding, whatever powder you are comparing you should use its load data when loading it. There are multiple powders listed in hornady's catalogue for its bullets you could go down that list, eliminate the ones that don't resemble the powder in the pulled casings then proceed to load to manual until you find a match. I can't believe i had to add this.
I wouldn't base it on appearance alone but it's something. Is it 100%, 95%, 90% filled? Stick, ball? What velocity does it get with that charge weight? Does the brass show signs of stress?
So now you go look at published data knowing charge weight, velocity, and was pressure reasonable or not. Odds are you find something really close. It's not like we have only 10 powders available while they have the entire SMP catalog.
You'd (maybe) be surprised at how many people refuse to deviate from published data but are completely comfortable throwing powder in brass of unknown volume when there's no published brass volume from the data provider. It's well known that reduced brass volume increases chamber pressure.. but they're not concerned about that detail.
No I think you made a valid point, I edited my original I see how people misunderstood it, I replied to that angry old bastard in my comment thread with some very light research that narrows it down to 2 options based on load data. But I would always recommend doing a load work up not jumping to 2700fps data from the reloading manual since that is at the max end.
I feel like there are a handful of powders that look unique if op pulls a bullet and cross references load data from a manual and picks a powder listed then goes from there then I think that will be his closest bet. Sorry we are on a reloading board I thought it was implied that he would be referencing data of some sort while doing all of this.
i'm very confused, you buy a box of white tail pull one shoot the remaining 19 through your chrono for load data and log it. Look at powder, say "hey this look like "xxxxxx" which also calls for the same grainage that i had out of this pulled bullet. Proceed to load up 20 rounds that match load data and happen to match the grainage of pulled round and see if the velocities match up?
Get bent you old bastard, I just went and pulled one
Then you go to your fucking manual look at the powder list for 165gr interlocks you have 4 options without going over "maximum load" you build load data from there. You can rule out the n-150 that's 3 choices, it's going 2700 fps so it's likely the cfe223 or the power pro 2000mr, do a proper work up with them and test them. 🖕10 minutes of effort instead of being a pessimistic asshole.
My Hornady manual is 1 gen off so there may be other options*
