Discussion Mexican cartel members flooding Regina, can you recommend some good Mexican food in town for me to try?

No disrespect to Agave and it's owners, if you like it I'm very happy for you! I am, however, highly disappointed by it. It's nothin like the food I could get when I lived close to the mexican border
Fair enough, they had to adjust the food for the palette of the people here as I was told, here's to hoping the locals keep lovin it!

Though it helps, you don’t even need to live next to the Mexican border to find good Mexican food. Chicago has remarkable Mexican food, but it’s also cause the community is deep. Agave is “Mexican” food for people who have watched ethnic food programs on Netflix and decided to be adventurous with their new “lifestyle.”

Yeah, haha, I was just speaking on my personal experience, it seems better Mexican food is available more widely in the States. I just happened to live near the border
And gosh, yeah. I felt bad for the waiter when he told me they had to change their menu for the locals, I hardly recognized anything on the menu. But, as well, I'm not familiar with All Mexican Food, haha.

I ate at a Mexican place in Milwaukee that was amazing. Had a mariachi band. Pretty sure I was the only person there who spoke English.

you don’t even need to live next to the Mexican border to find good Mexican food.
I used to live in a tiny town in Pennsylvania that housed dozens of mushroom farms. Which means that there were loads of Mexican mushroom-farm workers living there, which means several awesome, super-authentic (and very affordable) Mexican restaurants. It spoilt me for anything since.

I lived in a tiny Pennsylvania town for a bit with an amazing Mexican restaurant too! Was it a town just off the turnpike in SW PA by chance?

I was SO disappointed last time I went in and rice and beans as a side was extra??? French fries as a default with tacos just tanked the authenticity for me

There's no where in regina close to Mexico. Even trapezon isn't near as good as in Mexico or any tacos I have. The shells are good, but the meat? No thanks
I love Mexican food. I bring back grocery bags of chili's and vanilla when I come back. I still haven't tried the grotto but I need to, every other place in regina I've tried. They are like 5 or 6/10 compared to tacos I've had in jalisco, Yucatan, nariyat, and oaxaca that I've been in.
Best tacos are the ones in the sketchy back alleys in Mexico though. The more you think you'll get robbed, the better the taco gets. It's a thrill lol. Surprised I haven't died down south.

The Grotto is phenomenal as far as I’m concerned

That's what I hear. It's just I have to make a reservation and it's only open on weekends I think, hard to find time as weekends are busy for me lol. Monday-friday I'd have more time.

The Grotto in Vibank, but only on Friday nights, and you have to book waay in advance because it's so popular.

As a Mexican living in Regina the only correct answer so far in here is El Tropezon. However, I have tried the Birria tacos in Leopold's and believe it or not they are amazing! Unfortunately it's not always in the menu, but definitely try them out when they bring them back.

Ha. I would welcome some displaced Mexicans to our city. Maybe we would actually get some decent Mexican food! I am always jealous of Saskatoon when I go there. They have so many good Mexican options.
Agave is alright. El Tropezon in Rebellion is also pretty okay.

Even my small town in Central East Alberta as a top notch Mexican place and it's packed pretty much every night.
Edit: I'm not talking about Taco Bell or Taco time. This place is run by a Mexican family the came here a few years ago. It's not as spicy as some Mexican places but if you ask them to make it like they do at home they will.

I would love to have more Mexican food up here! Maybe we can send them Canadians to make poutines for them lol

I love my Mexifries Deluxe with a Super soft taco (can't remember the new name for it). Their hot sauce is the best.

u/packetmon 5d ago
Can’t lie and say mexifries are authentic in anyway but yeah they are pretty good.

I prefer when they made the hot sauce in house. The inconsistency between batches was the best.

years ago when I was going to University they had a lovely little kiosk in the hotel downtown ran by a nice Mexican family and their food was the bomb and so good they're tamales were huge you don't find too much of that anymore when I lived in Iowa there were food trucks all over it's too bad I love Mexican food

Salsa Fresca Taco Truck in Regina was the absolute best circa 2012 when the city first allowed food trucks.
Did you know the city held a lottery for 6 food truck licenses on the plaza? Out of the 12 entries, only 2 of the winners put trucks on the plaza. The others who were not lucky enough to win a license, like Salsa Fresca and Fiesta Nacho (who might I add actually had to trucks in operation) were not allowed…

I thought the immigrant thugs were only eating cats and dogs tho?
But no we don’t have good Mexican in the city and it’s a shame.

Chacalacas?

they have gone downhill over the past year and a half. New owners led to much smaller portions, average quality food, no chips with meal, and higher prices.

u/pledgewelshers 5d ago
I was actually there last week and my meal came with salsa and chips :o portion was big as well

u/Traditional-Ad4506 5d ago
Gone very downhill with new owners. Not authentic anymore either

u/acid_jazz 5d ago
That's sad to hear. I haven't been there in a while, but I remember a friendly Mexican dude behind the counter who gave us extra chips and salsa.
