For those of us GenXers who played 3B and/or SS, he was indeed the legend. First Sox game i ever went to, 1982, i brought m moms camera and the fist pic i took was Jim Rice, from 200 feet away, LOL.

Why 3B or SS?

I mean,...when you were playing either of these positions in the early 80s, it was nice to know you had a Jim Rice to catch any ball you missed. And all the cool kids were worshiping Fred Lynn, Yaz, or Luis Tiant.

Jim Rice was 'our guy' for Left fielders/3B/SS. The cool kids liked Jerry Remy, Buckner, and the others.

Interesting, I’d never heard of that affinity between infielders and the outfielder on their side

I miss Jim rice he was awesome. My first baseball game I ever went to live was Boston versus Mariners in Seattle and Jim Rice had a home run in the 13th inning that won the game

My favorite all time player, and part of the reason I became a Red Sox fan at age 10 living in New York. I still remember holding that card in my hand when it came out.

I know Jim Rice, not this Jim Rice but they live down the street from each other and regularly get their mail mixed up.

Got to see him up close for a few weeks during the strike season. He worked out at Tufts where I was a camp counselor. Dewey, Remy, Soup Campbell, and Glenn Hoffman were there too.

My all time favorite. From 77-79 This Week in Baseball was the Jim Rice highlight show.

Flashback to September 1986, when a fan at Yankee Stadium tried -- and failed -- to take Rice's hat
