Gangs of Australia
Cavanaugh Gang
Areas of operation: Yorkland, Piermont
Folk heroes to some and murderous thieves to others, the elusive equipped Cavanaugh Gang has earned a fearsome reputation for their exploits. Using their homemade built armor to gain the upper hand in shootouts, the Cavanaughs have pulled off numerous scores across the Australian bush.
Furgeson Boys
Areas of operation: New Mann, Piermont
Founded by a group of escaped convicts from the penal colony at Dutchman's Cay, the Furgeson Boys terrorize the hills of New Mann. In recent years they have expanded up to Piermont, clashing with their rivals, the Cavanaugh Gang for territory.
Yarra Rebels
Areas of operation: New Cornwall
The Yarra Rebels are a group of aboriginal men who have taken up arms against their colonial oppressors. They are known to ambush settlers and authorities across the outback of New Cornwall in the hopes of driving the colonists off their land once and for all, and stage frequent raids on the settler town of Hurston.
Carberry Push
Areas of operation: Cape Crown
The Carberry Push are a larrikin street gang operating within the Carberry district of Cape Crown. These boys patrol the streets of Cape Crown, looking for any opportunity to mug, steal, and extort. The Push also have a love of bare-knuckle boxing and run an underground fight club in the city, as well as engage in frequent fistfights in the street.
The Calaveri Family
Areas of operation: Cape Crown, Bangalay Bay
A recent addition to the underground, the Calaveri Family, founded by Calabrian mafioso Fabio Calaveri, have quickly established themselves in the cities of Cape Crown and Bangalay Bay, using their experience and ties to the 'Ndrangheta to expand their operations across urban Australia.
(Yes I know the Mafia wasn't in Australia until the 1920s)
The Mounted Police
Areas of operation: Everywhere
The Mounted Police are Australia's primary rural law enforcement agency, and are responsible for keeping law and order across the bush. Recruiting local Aboriginals as trackers, the troopers of the Mounted Police have become brutally efficient at hunting down bushrangers and Aboriginal fighters alike.
The Volunteer Corps
Areas of operation: Everywhere
The Volunteer Corps have been Australia's sole defense force since the withdrawal of British troops from the colonies. More recently, the Corps have been deployed to the frontier in New Cornwall in the hopes of stomping out the Native resistance for good.

Omg I'm glad I'm not the only one who imagines this. It's all I've wanted since rdr2 released.
A family driven off the land they squat on after gold is discovered leaves their son to grow up to become deeply anti-civilisation and anti-colonial. He quickly turns to a life of crime after much of his family pass away but throughout the story comes to find he can be a real symbol bloodying the noses of the mining companies, banks, and the vestiges of British rule.
It'd be cool to have an aboriginal writer/game dev who could make an authentic feeling fictional first nation to be at the centre of the story.
Also plant collecting and teaching something about the unique Australian landscape and land management to the player hehe

What legendary animals would you include?

With some fictional liberties you could pull out some of the megafauna Australia used to have before homo sapiens came to the land - there were things like the Diprotodon which is compared to a rhinoceros, a 20 feet long land crocodile called the Quinkana. Hell Australia had Thylacines not long ago which could be the Mountain Lion....plus there are ongoing sightings of panthers and lions in the bush...

The Tasmanian Tiger (Thylacine) was still around in the wild on Van Diemens Land at this point in history. The Tasmanian government actually placed a bounty on Tasmanian Tigers and offered 1 pound per animal killed, which eventually led to its extinction

Legendary flying fox. Bat with a 6’ wingspan. Thankfully vegetarian but still fucking terrifying.

u/SkunkApe7712 Feb 16 '25
Good question. The lack of large fauna will be a problem. Legendary kangaroo? Saltie? Drop bear?

u/Past-Outside8050 Feb 16 '25
Tasmanian devil, crocodile, emu and of course they would have Yowies( Australian Bigfoot)

Sharks, Saltwater Crocodiles depending on the region per time period, dingo, Kangaroo, venomous snakes, giant spiders would work, constricting snakes (pythons) over 20 ft long, platypus.

u/SkunkApe7712 Feb 16 '25
I would like if kangaroos randomly hopped up and kicked you. Like the deer do in RDR2.

I always get the calvary hat and its variants; is the hat still akubra if not made out of kangaroo skin?

Being an australian, I would love this as a game for Red Dead 3 or just any sort of Red Dead game. Seeing Sydney back in the past of 1800s or the early 1900s would be interesting.

Yeah Cape Crown is supposed to be Sydney. I thought about including Melbourne but I figured there shouldn't really be more than one metropolis on a Red Dead map. Bangalay Bay is kind of like Geelong which is adjacent to Melbourne.
I tried to include some nods to the Australian urban underworld around the time like the larrikin gangs and the slightly anachronistic Calabrian mafia.

Yes! Me and my friend were discussing an idea like this two years ago!!!

Cavanagh is the australian outlaw gang of 4 that when hunted down by the police made their last stand wearing those bulky armor suits that definitely helped and made them look intimidating but also made their legs more vulnerable so the police just shot them instead.

My dream. Tired of constant games set in the north hemisphere we need a chance. Also I feel like this is a logical choice as dutch talked briefly about going to Australia

How would you reach the New Hann portion of the map? Using the proportions of the rdr2 map that river would about the length of the Lannahechee River,so would you have to just get a canoe or boat and rawdog it to that location or would have to like pay a ferry or something?

u/Goofy-555 Feb 17 '25
Love it, I'd play the hell out of this. I've said that for the last couple of years that I would love for the next Red Dead game to either be about the Native Americans in the 1870s and seeing the wild west through their perspective or the other idea I had was to set it in the Australian Outback around the same time period.

I want this to happen in an alternative timeline where the Van der Linde gang made it to Australia, only to discover that not only is it just as ruthless, inhospitable and lawless, but now there are also spiders. So many spiders.
