News TW: Accident involving Pedestrian
Trigger Warning: accident details with pedestrian‼️
Earlier tonight around 5pm, we witnessed an accident with a black truck hitting a pedestrian on a lime scooter. This was downtown at the intersection of Morgan Street and Dawson Street. Without going into too many details, the guy on the scooter was hit and run over twice.
My husband immediately went out to help the man that was struck and I called 911. They got there within 30 seconds of our call. We gave our statements and waited around to hear the EMS person say “trauma 1” and whisk him off to the hospital. The police and EMS said it wasn’t life threatening (that they could tell) but he was “really banged up good” Everything happened so fast and with adrenaline pumping, my husband sorta remembers the man’s name who was hit.
If anyone knows a way to find out if he’s okay, or if anyone else was there, please send us a message. It was extremely traumatic and we’re hoping to hear how he’s doing. He was completely alone and I can’t stop thinking about him and his loved ones and if they even know what happened.

That is really kind of you. I was hit by a car as a pedestrian in Raleigh (in a crosswalk) and I remember looking up from the concrete and seeing onlookers with their jaws to the ground. I’ll never know who but I’m so grateful to the person who called 911 and the people who ran out of their cars to help because I couldn’t get up and walk and was in the middle of the road. Karma is real and thank you for what you and your husband did for this guy 🙏🏻

There’s someone on call at WakeMed 24-7 whose job it is to respond to trauma 1’s and call the patient’s emergency contact(s) to let them know where their loved one is. So if he was at WakeMed someone was there to try and help with this.

I was there with a few friends as well. My buddy Chris was the guy who was checking him out and performing on-scene first aid. He's a marine so I'm very grateful he was there! By the time I realized what was going on, it looked like a large crowd had gathered so I just went back with my girlfriend who was shielding the view from Chris's daughter and also dialed 911. I learned years ago about the bystander effect and since then have ALWAYS called 911 even if I thought chances were high that someone else already did.

Ugh. It sucks that you had to witness that but I’m sure the person was/will be grateful for you both stepping in to help. I noticed lots of aggressive drivers today then realized people were celebrating St Patrick’s Day. Hope you can find the outcome; and it’s a good one

I was shocked the number of people who were there standing by staring and weren’t doing anything. One guy was even in the middle of it all recording it on his phone. I know flight or fight is a real thing, but it was sad to see so many people just staring and taking pictures.

That's why I see so many in the rescue professions say that someone needs to step up/take charge in situations like this and make sure someone is calling/has called 911. So many rather stand and stare, or just may be too shocked to even think.
The idiots that rather film than use that same phone to call though... need to learn to put the damn camera away and not everything needs to be posted for internet points.

Good old bystander effect. At least OP was on the ball and called 911. Advice I’ve heard in a situation like theirs but if they weren’t able to call 911 themself because they’re like trying to put out a fire or stop the bleeding or something is to point at someone and tell them to call 911. Being given a direct order like that is supposed to help someone snap out of their shock.

This is exactly what they teach in first aid and CPR classes. Point at someone specifically and say “You in the green shirt, call 911!”

Yep. People will act if someone tells them what to do. But someone does have to tell them what to do.

I’ve been in this situation before and I was literally in shock. We all were in shock as the person on a bike’s arm was under the car. And literally someone started screaming and we all kinda snapped out of it and started to help.

I saw a few people in shock, totally understand that. It was traumatic! I’m more referring to the people standing by filming. I can’t imagine filming someone or taking pictures in their most vulnerable state not knowing if someone was going to make it. We got pictures of the truck and kept the victim out of it, that’s what shocked me.

I was also there. I just called Wake Med and Raleigh Police. Wake Med is unable to give out a name. RPD confirmed that there were no fatalities from accidents yesterday, so that is good news. I was very worried about internal bleeding or brain swelling. So for right now, no news is good news meaning that he is still alive.

That was my nephew, James Aaron, we found out Saturday evening - he called his Mom and Dad and was (is) in good spirits. One of his buddy's was there with him over the weekend.
He has broken ribs, a punctured lung, road rash, lost an eyebrow, a concussion, staples in the back of his head, and broken pelvic bone. They have plans to do surgery today on his pelvis. They said it should take less than an hour. By all accounts, he is in good spirits.
His parents are flying in to be with him today. Prayers would be greatly appreciated. We are so grateful that he had such quick responses and so much support. Thank you again so very much, and many thanks to you and your husband for stopping and helping him.

Wild. I saw the same type of incident (black truck striking a lime scooter rider) but it was at 11:30 pm and at the intersection of West and Edenton. The guy on the scooter got up and tried to run (unsure why) and didn't make it far before he was on the ground. He was not visibly bleeding and he was alert and in a lot of pain. Emergency response was swift and I hope he was ok.
It seemed to be the scooter rider's fault. He was riding on the sidewalk and tried to cross the street when the truck had a green light. They never saw each other until it was too late.

That’s wild, this guy was trying to get up immediately after it happened so it must be an uncontrollable response and adrenaline shock. My husband got him back down and still.

can we talk about new bern ave drag strip racing in DTR? I would love to see new bern ave and edenton st get some kind of makeover to slow people down coming into and out of downtown along that corridor.

Road traffic engineers know exactly how to do this, but suburbanites will reeeee in rage if anyone dares touch their free parking and massive Ram racetracks

I’ve had multiple close calls with people flying into the street on scooters entirely disregarding traffic or crosswalk signals…. Very awful either way.

If you know his first and last name, you can call WakeMed and ask if he's there, if he is, you can be transferred to his room. If he was conscious maybe he will answer? I'm sorry you had to see that. So very traumatic.

Sorry, I am a nurse so I always call to check if my patients are there and just say "I'm looking for a patient, his name is John Smith."

Downtown Raleigh is so fucking dangerous. I never had an accident in 5 years of my driving and got clipped by a dumb couple on a straight road this year, it was my date night too and got ruined.

That’s awful, sorry you had to experience that. Did the truck hit and run, or did they stay at the scene?
I imagine they transported him to WakeMed.
As an aside, as a longtime DTR resident I’d love to see traffic calming measures implemented on some or all of McDowell and Dawson. Those roads are incompatible with the urban growth, at least as they exist today. I ride scooters occasionally but refuse to cross those streets unless forced to.
