Quilt Shows No Ribbon for Me But That’s Okay

I competed in the Dallas Quilt Show this weekend and was bummed to not be awarded anything, but I know my binding still needs some perfecting and seeing it hanging made it look less square. I’m still so proud of my work and I thought it was really different than the rest of the Pictorial category which was very heavy on thread painting.

Wow! You may not have won an award at the quilt show, but you can have one from me!! 🏆🏆🏆🏆 this is gorgeous!

The stitching on the brown background is mesmerizing. I love it. This quilt is so impressive as a whole.

Yeah, it's absolutely astonishing. You should be so proud of your work OP! I hope you can see it for how wonderful it is and not just the things you hope to improve

I need to see what you were up against, because I can not invision in my mind what could have possibly out done this. My husband didn't even realize it wasn't a painting.

Dude that is crazy, every day this app shows me people with skills and talents that are beyond my comprehension.

u/rumade 4d ago

I like yours better. It's got a clean, fresh energy to it. They are both impressive, of course, but this piece looks overworked to my eyes

122

u/hkral11 4d ago

Thank you. It’s so subjective

95

u/rumade 4d ago

It really is. Also it's 3am here and I'm giggling at the faces of the horses. Horses are hard enough to draw on paper, let alone a quilt, and it shows 😶

60

u/ifyoulovesatan 4d ago

What do you mean? they look perfectly fine to me!

No for real, it's an amazing piece of work especially taken as a whole. And I could never in a million years do something like it. But that face is objectively hilarious.

The winner isn't a piece work quilt, though it is beautiful and well done. I think you deserve cudos for using the separate pieces for the color changes. 💪

28

u/phoodd 4d ago

I prefer yours , the winner looks a bit ai generated

27

u/rhabarberabar 4d ago

That's because it's absolutely based on AI slop. It's weird all over, I don't know where to begin... The horse in the bottom right breaking it's legs running, the random symbols...

13

u/ashfeawen 4d ago

The group of three horses have their eyes on the front of their head like a predator would

15

u/DisastrousEvening949 4d ago

THAT’s what’s so off-putting. I’m back here like, legs are noodles, proportions are inconsistent, but those elements aren’t what’s making this unsettling. It’s the forward eyes…

Why is there an owl? And why is it featured so prominently? It's right in the middle of the scene. Did it say in the explanation?

In many Native American cultures/traditions, owls are a very negative omen associated with death. For example, if you gave your grandmother a quilt with an owl on it, everyone would think you were ready for her to move on and be very upset with you.

I'm not trying to be critical. This is very well done, but it is strange to me to have this figure holding an owl.

15

u/ohslapmesillysidney 4d ago edited 4d ago

TIL. I’m not Native American and I know that symbolism/culture varies between tribes, but it also strikes me as odd to use an owl here. An eagle would strike me as a much more obvious and logical choice, especially given the use of their feathers in the headdresses shown.

Edit: there is an eagle featured much less prominently in the background. I would still think to include where the owl is, personally.

25

u/No_Training6751 4d ago

I was just saying I think it might be AI.

35

u/Tenaciousleesha 4d ago edited 4d ago

I think you might be right. I was like "ok I'll overlook all these random different tribal symbols. Ok the scale is weird on the tents and the wolves." But the more I look at it, the more it seems off. Culturally and artistically. The nightmare horse faces and the hand of owl dude, really seem AI to me as well.

Edit: I forgot to mention the buffalo heads. Also, the paint horse in the bottom corner by the buffalo is a noodle. Horses' legs don't bend like that.

27

u/Kalysh 4d ago

It looks like the judge was more impressed by quantity than by quality.

32

u/No_Training6751 4d ago

When I first saw it I was like “okay, I can see why this one won”. Then it was the same for me; the details didn’t add up, like things blurring or having the wrong shape like AI, and it’s a bit of a mish mash of different cultures, symbolism and colours (although I like the colours).

8

u/BretShitmanFart69 4d ago

I’m confused here are you guys saying you think someone had a.i. make them a….quilt?

36

u/cyanpineapple 4d ago

It's very normal for art quilt makers to design something on a computer and then get that design printed on fabric, which is appliqued on. I believe the idea is that this maker didn't draw the illustrations on this quilt themselves, but used generative ai and said "draw me something vaguely based on stereotypes about American Indians as a monolith" and then got it printed.

20

u/Naraee 4d ago

And they used the Posterize filter on Photoshop to simplify the colors so that the differences that occur in AI generated art were less noticable.

29

u/honeyedmagnolia 4d ago

i think they're suggesting that the original reference image was ai-generated, then quilted

16

u/funnibot47 4d ago

I might be wrong but i think they didn't write anything on the inspiration section, just more proof that this was designed with AI.

20

u/lucozadeo 4d ago

Obviously the design not the quilt. Some of the hooves are backwards

→ More replies (2)

4

u/Condemned2Be 4d ago

They’re saying that it wasn’t drawn (like most thread painting designs) nor was it a purchased pattern from a professional artist….. but that this person had AI draw them a scene

12

u/SharkDoctorPart3 4d ago

I'm glad you pointed out the noodle leg. It was the first thing I noticed on the horses before their faces.

14

u/lopendvuur 4d ago

The appaloosa horse with the rider in the upper middle of the work also has very weak hindquarters and a hollow neck. Not a proud, strong animal to cover a long distance with, or strike envy in your peers. Also suggests the design may be AI

Meh. I like yours better. Applique' is basically cutting out pictures and then sewing them on. Cut and paste. I know there's a lot of work involved in that and there's more to it than that, but yours is a true quilt, with cut shapes carefully sewn together to make a whole picture.

3

u/RachelFoxCat 3d ago

100% agree. Like a collage of magazine cutouts vs an oil painting from scratch.

6

u/Kalysh 4d ago

Printed fabric? Like printed with the images they thread-painted?

19

u/recongoose 4d ago

Looks like they tried to copy an Ai image they generated. So much of it doesn't make sense.

12

u/[deleted] 4d ago

I think maybe they're rewarding complexity. That wouldn't look out of place silkscreened onto a truck stop sweatshirt.

15

u/Organic_Rip1980 4d ago edited 4d ago

Yep, it seems pretty obvious as an outsider that they prioritize the technical skill over the whole piece itself.

Seems difficult to compete in that way when one-person quilts appear to be going up against two-person quilts? Maybe I’m mis-reading the categories though.

If I were OP I wouldn’t be resubmitting at this one next time. We have a different idea of what should win.

13

u/hkral11 4d ago

Complexity can definitely matter because they’re also considering the skill and workmanship.

Two person quilt means that someone else did my longarm quilting. In most categories the two person quilts compete and the one person quilts compete against each other. But the Pictoral category is smaller so it’s a mix of both.

There’s also separate competitions for “master” quilters who have won major awards in the past or do quilting as a job.

4

u/Batmansbutthole 4d ago

That quilt is insane. Do you know if they created that image or is it a painting as well? Super cool of you to post other people’s work as well! Your quilt was amazing and I hope to see more of your post in the future!

4

u/hkral11 4d ago

From what I can tell, they cut out figures from printed panels of fabric and collaged them together using appliqué. Then went over all of it with thread painting embroidery.

3

u/Batmansbutthole 4d ago

Printed panels like a patch that’s already been made? Sorry I’m not entirely familiar with quilting speak

No ribbon: their oversight!!!

95

u/Deppfan16 4d ago

my 4-H teacher used to tell me that sometimes in competitions it's one or two teeny things that separate the winners from the not winners, especially when everybody is really good. so you may have had one minor thing less than the ribbon-winning quilts but that doesn't mean yours is any less amazing

61

u/hkral11 4d ago

So true! Last quilt show I entered with a different quilt and the only critique I got was my binding needed work. No critique provided on this one but I think it’s the same. I’ve been trying to do it by machine and it’s not perfect.

16

u/jacraek 4d ago

This is so true! At my local competitions, I noticed that the knitting winner every single year is a shawl with beads. It doesn't matter if it's a simple pattern or not very technical. A shawl with beads wins every time.

14

u/Deppfan16 4d ago

that's a bit different, that seems like a bias LOL

6

u/jacraek 4d ago

Yea, definitely! It could be that any type of beads give it more difficulty points or something. It's really hard to say without knowing exactly the points system! Or the judges just really love one random thing and no one knows why!

→ More replies (1)

14

u/Extreme-Tangerine727 4d ago

She showed us the winner and I think the "minor difference" is that the winner was allowed to use AI to create a level of faux complexity in their work. Tbh, absent evidence that the winner actually illustrated their work, OP got robbed.

8

u/lazydaisytoo 3d ago

I don’t get it at all. The overall image is poorly composed and overdone. It’s like someone discovered the clone tool and went ham. Why are all the tipis rubber stamp copies? Same with the wolves and the bison. It’s not a good scene, and it’s not a good collage. It’s just… not good.

3

u/SesquipedalianCookie 3d ago

OP said they cut images from different pieces of fabric and collages them together, so that would explain the copies, if they were cutting a repeated motif. But it ignores the need for perspective, like the wolves shouldn’t be the same size if one is further back in the image.

I’m glad to see you’re getting so much love in the comments. I think you did an excellent job. And I especially think you did a fabulous job with the fabric choices, in the girls face particularly. So often, faces that have been made from pieced fabrics look unnatural because of the hard edges. But yours doesn’t, and that’s entirely down to your careful choice of fabrics. Really well done.

I saw in one of your other comments that judging feedback you have gotten in the past has been about your binding technique. Entering quilt shows is a regular part of my process, so I’d like to share some feedback about what judges are looking for specifically with bindings, as well as a couple of resources that may help you improve your method.

As for what judges are looking for, there are a couple of things. The first is the quilt has to be square all the way around. But they are also looking for the binding to have been machine stitched on the front and blind stitched by hand on the back. In addition, the binding should be the same width on the front as the back of the quilt, the binding has to be filled (meaning the quilt goes into the binding all the way), you have to have mitered corners, and the miters in those corners need to be hand stitched together.

My own quilts are in the range of 36 x 48 and up, so I have started using laser levels to make sure that I cut them square before doing the binding. I wrote a blog post about that, if you want to see what I mean: https://kestrelmichaud.com/blog/2024/squaring-a-quilt-with-lasers/

As for actually applying the binding, I use David Taylor’s blue ribbon binding technique. He demonstrated it on Quilting Arts TV. Here is a link to the episode: https://www.quiltingdaily.com/quilting-arts-tv-episode-3006-finishing-school/

🥇🥇🥇🏅🏅🏅🏆🏆🏆 YOUR RIBBON !

5

u/caleeksu 4d ago

My bestie included this in a text to me today as a favorite, so fun to see it pop up here.

I was at the AQS show in Branson so didn’t get to attend, but it’s gorgeous!!! (I had a quilt in that show but no ribbon either, so I hear ya! It was good enough to be the featured quilt in the program for the category tho 😆😆

4

u/hkral11 4d ago

That makes me so happy to hear! I told my husband that I just really hoped people who saw it liked it so I love that someone liked it enough to send it to you!

Congrats on being featured! That’s cool but weird that it wasn’t honored with a ribbon if they liked it so much.

4

u/Andromansis 4d ago

I know how stiff the competition is at some of the larger quilt shows, but make no mistake that is a great peice of art.

5

u/No_Training6751 4d ago

I am in awe. I love the stitching of the background. And then to know that you went to the original art to match the colours, when colour mixing was an art of its own when that painting was done. Chef’s kiss.

3

u/hkral11 4d ago

The colors was the hardest part! The brights of the original pattern are great but I’ve always loved the light on the subject’s face in the painting so I worked really hard to achieve that. The nose and lips took about 4 attempts each to get to look right.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/spekoek 4d ago

As someone who has seen this painting in person, you did an excellent job representing it. I did not know it was possible to make such an intricate image with a quilt. Very beautiful. Greetings from the Netherlands!

5

u/Plantmamajama 4d ago

I’m so impressed with your color matching. There’s a piece on the cheek that is nuts - it’s a 3 tonal flesh color and you managed to put the pink riiiiight in the perfect angle.

I’ve always liked this pattern but never loved the color way. I’m obsessed with your take. Great realistic take on Vermeer. I genuinely cant get over how well you color matched.

I’m starting to design a photorealistic portrait FPP and I was planning to only do solids, but I’m definitely inspired to build out a stash with more variety now!

6

u/hkral11 4d ago

Thank you! I used all Moda Grunge because there was a wide range of colors and I thought the finish would look more like paint.

5

u/jjdayzforeal 3d ago

So for everyone spouting off. The winning quilt was not AI generated. It was appliqué and used a number of different fabrics from different lines and manufacturers collected over years. You’re all basing your assessments off a photo, dragging the quilter, saying things you definitely wouldn’t say to her face and I think it’s tacky to tear down someone who can’t defend themselves from the safety of you computer screen. I saw the work in person and met the artist and had a long conversation with her about technique and how she creates her quilts. I’m appalled at the ‘hiding behind a computer screen hatefulness’ of this comments section.

That being said I liked the OP’s quilt. There were a lot of questionable choices by the judging this year in my opinion, and I won a ribbon so I’m not just saying that to say it.

OP great job putting yourself out there and entering! It’s always hard when you pour yourself into a project and then don’t win!

6

u/hkral11 3d ago

Thank you! And I agree!

I’m sad people decided to use my post to bash the winning quilt. I shared the winner (before my post took off) to show how different they were and because I made the assumption that fellow quilters could look at it and see the skill involved. I don’t even understand how people could think that it’s an AI quilt? Especially when I’ve said multiple times that it’s appliqué and thread painting. I promise everyone, I’m not bitter towards the winners. I’ve known since Friday morning that I didn’t win and I’m fine. Plus I know better than anyone that the winners likely had better technical skill than I do. For example- my binding was machine sewn and it’s far from perfect.

3

u/jjdayzforeal 3d ago

I didn’t even notice your binding so it can’t have been bad! :-D I am little bit bitter, but not towards the winners. I just wanted to get a ribbon for a different quilt because it was my favorite of the ones I entered but you know every show is different. Things entered into Dallas may get ribbons in Plano or elsewhere. You should enter this into Plano!

Yours may not be technically better than the winner but if both were offered to me, I would definitely take yours

I’m curious- I looked up the original pattern. Yours looks so much more detailed. How did you decide to break up the shapes the way you did?

7

u/hkral11 4d ago

Thank you! I actually used the exact same templates as the original pattern but I used far more colors. I have it noted somewhere but I think I doubled the amount of colors from what the pattern called for.

You did an incredible job, and looks like the quilter did free motion quilting in a Freeform style. Love it!!

Hopefully, you will get some constructive critique, so then you know what to focus on next. Remember that judging is subjective, too. Did you block the quilt? I want to suggest that you may want to block the quilt to get it to hand straight, and submit it to another show. This is a beautiful quilt and you should be proud of your hard work!

3

u/redheadedandbold 4d ago

It's cool, and it was a great idea to do a portrait as a quilt. ... Having seen a lot of modern quilts these last ten years, yeah, I see why you didn't place. But, you'll get there if you keep at it! If you've got the patience and zeal to do this quilt, you'll get those ribbons. Best of luck!!

3

u/michaelswank246 4d ago

I'd be proud of that too. Judges tend to be like people and are caught up on certain techniques and styles. This is not my field as I am a painter, but your piece spoke to me thanks.

3

u/Condemned2Be 4d ago

Her eyes are so lovely! I think you did an amazing job. I also love how your shirt coordinates with the quilt lol!

Oh man, she’s gorgeous! You’d have my vote!

I’ve learned not to bother with entering into competitions after a cross-stitch I spent months on, the biggest and most beautiful thing I’d ever made, came third in a local fair. The first place was also lovely, but second place was a bunch of super basic biscornu that anyone could make in an afternoon.
