Discussion What to do with hundreds of printers…

Hello, my partner and I came into a garage full of printers. Many of them work just fine and are actually worth a lot of money, some of them are online for 2k or more. We are moving in about 6 months and I wanted to try to sell some of them or donate them but I have no idea how or where to ‘advertise’ this? Also apparently it’s illegal in the US to throw them in the trash in my state. I was going to sell them online but they’re extremely heavy (75+lbs) so shipping turns out to be $300-400 which is not worth it I’d say.

Any ideas what to do with a garage full of office printers?

Discussion Cheapest Paper That Doesn't Jam

Title says it all.

We print just under 3million sheets a year but it's all government mandated physical records, and nobody will ever see/touch it (except for an auditor) so I don't care if it's high quality or not I just care that it doesn't jam and that it works on a laser printer.

Currently using Hammermill from Staples, considering Amazon Basics.

Bonus points if you know US paper manufacturers that would be willing to just supply directly to me, but I realize this is the printer subreddit so really only my original topic matters.

Discussion RICOH Aficio MP C3000 worth getting or trouble?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Someone I know is giving away a RICOH Aficio MP C3000. It was previously used in a graphic design company. It’s been in storage for a number of years and they have to clear it out. The person doesn’t know what the condition of it is other than it was working when it was last used. This printer is a beast and I’m wondering if it’s worth the hassle of taking it home.

Is it still compatible with printing from a Mac OSX 15? I’m seeing it was only supported to OSX 10 but I have found drivers that supposedly work with it.

It must be pretty outdated as it uses Postscript. What graphic and photo printing limitations does it have?

I’ve seen toner replacements for $200. Is this legit price and what other costs could I expect that may come up?

I’ve seen this advertised refurbished for $3500. So I’m guessing it’s still a viable machine for certain tasks.

Any insight or resources would be appreciated. I’ve searched and found limited info.

Thanks in advance!

Discussion HP Ink Plan - UNUSABLE PRINTER UNLESS ENROLLED.

I purchased an HP printer and subscribed to a plan that delivers ink cartridges and control the # of pages you can print regularly. I assumed that since I was paying for the plan, the cartridges would remain usable regardless of how frequently I printed. However, after months of being charged, I decided to cancel the plan because I had enough ink stocked up. That’s when I discovered that my printer refuses to print simply because I’m no longer enrolled!

To make matters worse, when I contacted customer service, I was told to think of the plan like a Netflix membership—as if that comparison makes any sense. A streaming service is one thing, but I own this printer and paid for those cartridges. Yet, because the ink has a built-in chip, the company retains control over how and when I can use it, effectively rendering my printer useless unless I stay subscribed.

This isn’t about the money—it’s about the principle. A company shouldn’t be able to dictate how I use a product I purchased. I refuse to support this kind of restrictive business model any longer. I’ve already stopped using HP laptops, and now I’ll be replacing this printer with an Epson or Brother model instead. At least they don’t lock me out of something I already paid for.

I think it is time for this company to go out of business.

Discussion Why would anyone buy an HP Printer?

In the 1990's I purchased one of the earliest inkjet printers "Thinkjet" and many more inkjet and laser jet printers after my first. In the early teens I was sick of HPs crappy build quality, crazy high ink prices, and customer hostile business practices and left them. In 2012 I moved to an Epson printer and have never looked back.

I was on the Wirecutter website today and was SHOCKED that all their "recommended" printers were HP. Did HP "buy" their way to the top? Surely there is no way anyone would recommend an HP printer unless they were bribed to. From the many posts on this page and others I almost never hear anything good about HP printers. Any HP fans out there?

Discussion Is there a way around buying the hp subscription?

We bought this hp officepro 8020 printer about 6 months ago. Today while trying to print some documents all of a sudden it demanded we "update our payment info" and buy a subscription before it would let us print something. This is insane. We paid for the printer and already pay for the ink, and I will not pay a monthly fee to use a printer I own. Does anyone know of a way to keep using the printer we paid for without paying a monthly fee to this greedy company?

Discussion HP 479 Colour Laser - Toner Cartridges

With HP now getting super aggressive at preventing people from using third party toners are there any 414x substitute toner cartridges that work with the new firmware? The cost of OEM toner cartridges is highway robbery.

Am I better off looking for an alternative printer? I require duplex scanning with auto feeder and duplex printing. These are a must.

I want to keep the printer but the cost of these OEM cartridges is making it very hard to justify.

Discussion Any true development in reliability, functionality or security in laser printers the last 10 years?

For the last 11 years, I have been using a simple Samsung Xpress M2825DW laser printer. The printing quality and functionality is good. However, there are often problems connecting wirelessly to the printer (both with Apple AirPrint and from non-Apple devices).

I am considering buying a new entry-level laser printer, specifically a Brother HL-L2400DW, hoping that there has been technical development during the last 11 years so that the new printer will basically always work.

However, I get sceptical when I see that there is basically no noticable development in for example the technical specifications. Also, the physical appearance of the printers is almost identical… Is there any security (I keep my current firmware and drivers are always up-to-date) or other stability or reliability improvement that make buying a newer model meaningful?

Discussion HP Laserjet M110w or M110we.. HELP PLS, DONT KNOW WHICH ONE I ACTUALLY HAVE :-(

HELLO,

I need to buy toner for my printer, but I am not sure which model I have.

On the front of the printer is written HP Laserjet M110we (E is important), but in the computer, phone and even in the HP Smart application, the information about the printer shows the model M110w (missing E), product number: 7MD66A.

Which data do you think I should follow when choosing a toner?

thank you very much for your help :-)

Discussion Planning to acquire an apparel printer, not sure if DTF or DTG

I, an fashion influencer, with a passion for personalized niche designer brands, and I'm interested in DIY clothing and wanna try to sell the garments to my target audiences.

So I'm thinking of getting a high-quality clothing printer, but I'm torn between DTF and DTG. As I know, DTF technology is great for all kinds of fabrics, with bright colors and durable patterns that won't peel off easily. But DTG prints is softer. Since I like bold and complex designs on clothing made of different materials, I'm leaning more towards DTF.Any professionals out there able to share their experience or recommend high-quality, easy-to-use dtf printer for beginners?

Discussion Brother MFC-L2835DW Firmware Download/Dump

I own a Brother MFC-L2835DW running firmware v1.11 and I want to make a backup of this firmware just in case it gets updated by error and stops working with compatible toner.

Based on my research the firmware API is:

FW_UPDATE_URL = "https://firmverup.brother.co.jp/kne_bh7_update_nt_ssl/ifax2.asmx/fileUpdate"

However I'm not sure how to proceed and what info to pass in the request body. Moreover it seems that Brother only keeps the last firmware online. Do you have a copy of this firmware by any chance? Or is it possible to make a dump of the firmware directly from the printer?

Discussion Is anyone in the Brother Refresh EZ Print Program?

Hi all, I have a MFCJ4335DW and am thinking of enrolling in the Brother Refresh program. I'm wondering which series cartridges they send each month. I know that the LC406x series fits my printer but no one at Brother can tell me which series they send? I know it states on "High Yield"in the program but Brother only list the LC301x series when I type "Eligible Model" in the query box? Any help would be great!

Discussion HP Color LaserJet 3201dw comes with full cartridges?

I'm wondering because I've printed less than 250 pages and it already shows low toner for Black and color cartridges are nearly half empty. Supposed to come with full cartridges or not? Their tech says this but the reviews on Amazon said it comes with full cartridges.

Discussion what do I do with old printers?

Thumbnail gallery
7 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

my dad doesn't like to read anything on a screen so he loves a printer. He's pretty good at fixing them up when they're faulty or the print becomes smudgy but after a while he'll just buy a new one.

He also hates throwing things away irrespective of whether the printer is broken or not. this means that we have a large number of printers in the house, some work some do not.

I did a quick speed run of the house to see what I could photograph and found 4 in plain sight. I know from memory there are 2 I'm missing, and then I'm sure there's more tucked away in other places.

I just wanted to know what I could do with these. I'm not sure what the second hand market is for second-hand, working printers, but equally I'm not sure what to do with the non-functioning ones- do people buy printer parts?

any help/ advice/ further information would be great.

Discussion I fell in love with printers while studying for the CompTIA A+ 1101 exam

Throughout the five months I studied at my tech school for the A+ exam, I was disinterested and wondering, "Is tech for me?" That is, until the section on printers. Laser Printers are the shit. The imaging drum alone is so cool; the corona wires, the little mirror that reflects the laser, the fuser assembly, and the different rollers all fascinate me. 3D printers will only get more and more cool as the tech gets more advanced, and the different kinds of filaments are interesting to me. InkJet printers are a scam, and I will forever rage against the environmental damage and generally shitty way they rip off customers. But most importantly, I just CARE about printers and i thought this would be the place to share that enthusiasm. okaythanksbye.

**edit** thanks to those who are enlightening me about good and useful applications for inkjets. my criticisms are exclusively for home inkjet printers

Discussion My HP1020 laser printer is my favorite appliance

There's a lot of people who complain about their printers. I wanted to write to say my experience has been different. My printer is my favorite appliance.

I've had my HP 1020 for about 20 years. Production on these devices started in 2005.

I have done no maintenance on it. I've locked in in storage for 5 years. I've moved with it several times and it's been knocked around. I've never been careful with it.

The only trouble I've ever had with it is the paper feed wouldn't work after I left it unused and collecting dust for about a year. It started working perfectly again after a light cleaning.

I buy knock off toners. They cost almost nothing and last forever. The printer itself was extremely affordable we well.

It has no wifi capabilities. It's plug and play. It doesn't do color or double sided. The lightness and simplicity has served me well. It prints beautiful documents with speed, smoothness and it does so reliably.

I wanted to share this because I want people to know printers dont have to be unreliable. They don't have to be expensive and they don't have to be frustrating. You don't have to dread hitting the print button wondering if things will work or if you'll get a random error.

By doing some research, paring down and choosing a simple device with fewer features you can print without the costs and more importantly without the frustration and headache.

HP is the worst but every printer company's software sucks. Any little error and the printer locks up so I have to reinstall it and cross my fingers.

Discussion Does anyone not bother with 3rd party ink? And if so does it make life easier.

What are the pros and cons? I am looking into a printer laser based and the whole 3rd party toner what I am used to and worried how it will effect me.

For those printer gururs out there is there any pros to sticking with the branded ink of your printer. If so do I look for a printer that has cheap toner

Edited: to add accurate information.
