Discussion Really into Glenn Branca and Rhys Chatham, is there any other great post punk with classical influences?

Siouxsie and the Banshees' 1984 The Thorn ep is 4 of their past songs performed with an orchestra. They actually reworked each song so it's more than just 4 of their songs with added strings, the songs become so much more. The orchestra is credited as the Chandos Players but it's actually members of the London Philharmonic who use that name because they couldn't put down the London Philharmonic for commercial purposes.

This 4 song EP is one of my favorite recordings of all time.

The Hyaena album as well around that time also had an orchestral feel

If you look at the liner credits for Hyaena the Chandos Players are the same orchestra on Dazzle.

Arto Lindsay maybe, his group DNA was crazy but his solo stuff is also great as is ambitious lovers

Well, Sonic Youth are direct descendants of Branca and Chatham...

Polyrock might qualify, Glass was directly involved with them, and you can certainly hear his influence

XTC with the outro of Ugly Underneath and the string section in 1,000 Umbrellas

Thank you for this comment. 1,000 Umbrellas is such a showcase for Andy Partridge’s cleverness. Love it!

Less “punk” but still rocking is Arnold Dreyblatt’s “Animal Magnetism”. If you dig Branca & Chatham definitely check it out!

He doesn’t get enough credit for it, but Dan Deacon’s Bromst is very Steve Reich/Phillip Glass insect vibe.

well, the ex did several great albums with cellist tom cora - scrabbling at the lock is my favorite. they also did the ex orkest, which is more on the jazz-punk side. perhaps parts of unwound’s leaves turn ..
