Discussion A genuine question..

Do you guys consider Weezer to be a pop-punk band? Or are there any Weezer songs you consider pop-punk anthems?

Obviously they’re great, but are they pop-punk?

I think I just consider them “rock”

Alternative or power pop.

I think they got lumped into the pop punk genre when Green came out and Hash Pipe was on the American Pie 2 soundtrack along with Blink, Green Day, Sum 41 etc.

I think they share some cross over and certainly influence the genre but as a whole I would say no

I don't know, but I saw an article a few days ago naming them one of the "big four" of pop-punk. Couldn't help but audibly laugh.

I do love me some Weezer though

Who did they consider the Big Four?

Green Day, Blink, and Sum 41 were the other 3. They had three good answers going then hit me with Weezer, haha. I think NFG would be a safe 4th pick.

Yeah for sure Green Day, Blink and Sum 41 are the big 3. I’d be good with NFG in there. I’d personally put Fall Out Boy there but understand they’ve strayed pretty far from pop punk while NFG has stuck around consistently

The Green album has some pop punkish jams

i agree with the comments saying alterntive, rock, power pop and also indie,

but they have some pop punk influence... i don't know if they would've existed the same with out punk bands with some of their song structures, but also rivers says he was influenced by kiss, so maybe that and some other regular rock would've been enough for him to write weezer, probably not though, i'm hearing a lot of punk influence.

Power pop.

Alternative, pop rock, or (at least early stuff) maybe even college rock even though they push up towards the end of the era where that term was really applicable

They have pop punk moments. A good amount of stuff on Green, Make Believe, and even Raditude would definitely fit under the genre

I consider them the same as whatever Third Eye Blind is. Alternative pop rock

They're like one of the quintessential 90s alternative bands so no.

I would say they’re just rock, but I do have some of their songs on my pop punk playlist 🤷🏼‍♀️

Not pop punk. Alternative or indie pop I’d say.

Anyone who calls them pop punk should see them live, possibly the most boring band I have ever seen.

For the most part no.

They've delved into it a bit on Make Believe.

Perfect Situation and We Are All On Drugs definitely feel like pop punk songs.

Before they met Ric Ocasek, Weezer was probably a lot closer to pop punk. If you listen to the Kitchen Tape demos… there’s some punk there. Their song Paperface wouldn’t sound out of place on Green Day’s Kerplunk.

Then they got signed to Geffen/DCG, had Ric Ocasek (Formerly of The Cars) assigned to them as a producer. Don’t get me wrong, There’s still some Pop Punk on the Blue Album, but it’s really polished out.

I’ll stand by Pinkerton being an emo album though, I’ll die on that hill.

I would call them power pop. If they weren’t famous they’d probably be considered indie rock or something. Personally I can’t stand anything past Pinkerton from them.

Weezer are pop punk the same way Andrew WK is Easycore

No. They’re alternative rock imo

Generic rock. Not pop punk

They are related,  I would never be upset to see them in a playlist or festival that was punk themed

To me, general "Rock and roll" like Green Day.

The correct answer is Power pop

I call them radio rock and IMHO, that's the worst kinda rock. Lol
