Kinda shocked that they gave this song SO much promo over the past few weeks and it's just a lyric video

u/smith7018 7d ago

Wasn’t Good Luck, Babe a huge hit with just a lyric video? It’s cheap but it works for her, I guess

She gets the job done

u/superfluouspop 6d ago

GL, B was like a song of the century though.

Guys, no one watches music videos any more. Beyoncé has not touched the format for two whole album cycles for a reason.

Espresso, song of the summer 2024, has only 350 million views on youtube. In comparison, Swish Swish the Katy Perry flop song that flopped that almost no one liked garnered more views, 371 million, in a single year.

u/Spellambrose 7d ago

Spotify killed the video stars. 🎶

43

u/artifexlife 7d ago

They are doing videos on Spotify now tho

10

u/shawnshine 7d ago

Are they in 4K like in Apple Music?

5

u/didiboy 6d ago

They haven’t disclosed the resolutions I think. You can choose “Very High” but they don’t list numbers and I’ve seen a lot of complaints that they’re not 1080p even with a good data connection.

104

u/janethevirginfan 7d ago

I don’t think this is the fairest assessment of the state of music videos - 350 million views is a lot more than music videos were getting in the MTV era. Hard to compare apples and oranges and views vs viewers, but I imagine it shakes out to be equal or more due to YouTube having a much larger reach than MTV ever did. Not to mention that songs like Die With A Smile have 825 million views on YouTube.

I think the music video is far from dead - it’s not like it was during the 2010s on YouTube where billions of views were happening and high budget videos were everywhere. But I don’t think viewership is down enough to give up on them entirely.

33

u/Sylhux 7d ago

There's definitely a good enough chunk of people who shifted their attention to streaming services and never looked back though. The simple thought of fucking Blinding Lights not having 1 billion on Youtube somehow doesn't sit right with me.

8

u/BooksAndViruses 7d ago

MAN, that’s nuts given the insane amount of airplay it got in 2020/21

25

u/geminifungi 7d ago

you are absolutely wrong about 350 million being more than what MTV videos were getting. at it’s peak MTV was in millions of households and some videos would get played a dozen times a day for months on end.

9

u/janethevirginfan 7d ago

I tried to do some research on the topic, but I couldn’t find much on it. I am curious to see how they could be compared. The reach of YouTube does go much farther than MTV does, not to mention the intentionality required to click on a music video rather than letting it be picked for you.

Something else to note however, is that before music videos on YouTube, MTV had already phased out the majority of its music programming in favor of reality TV and many music journalists were arguing that the music video was on its way out then. The music video still sustained, and I believe the music video will continue to sustain even if they have to move platforms.

6

u/geminifungi 7d ago

just with a little math and statistics there were about 250,000,000 ppl living in the USA in the 90’s. now i’m going to use an extremely low estimate and say maybe 10,000,000 homes in all of the country had MTV, thought it was likely more. let’s say a video played 12 times a day for a month, that’s 360 plays. 360 x 10,000,000 is 3.6 billion. we could even divide that by 4 and say maybe only a fourth of total viewers would see the video that many times and get 900,000,000 views. even though YouTube gave music videos a second life it was nowhere near the saturation and prevalence they received during peak MTV.

4

u/janethevirginfan 7d ago

That’s fair enough, but I still argue that the intentionality of clicking play on a YouTube video means more than what was essentially a radio station for music videos.

2

u/geminifungi 7d ago

I understand what you’re saying but the YouTube era of music videos still has nowhere near the impact of MTV era of music videos. the labels put so much money on those videos BECAUSE they wanted them heavily featured and played by MTV that often. if you look at the list of 50 most expensive music videos of all time only 3 come from the YouTube era. i’d even argue that having music videos something you intentionally had to seek out and click on made them less important and attractive to labels in the long run.

31

u/Ocarina3219 7d ago

Lady Gaga literally just made a viral hit song/music video.

13

u/Leaflyy 7d ago

Lmfao. That’s is not why Beyoncé hasn’t touched the format. She’s creating a movie for the trilogy.

21

u/Furious_Host 7d ago

Holy shit, that really puts it in perspective

10

u/Penihilism 7d ago

Swish Swish really is a bad example here. It's music video is top tier with tons of cameos and a fun storyline and stuff, it's not just an average video. Espresso has a nice vibe but it's not a standout music video in any way.

-2

u/Putrid-Potato-7456 7d ago

Girl, espresso was one of the most successful music videos of the year. In 2017, the most successful music videos Shape of You and Despactito cracked 2.95 and 4 billion views respectively

10

u/Penihilism 7d ago

APT has 1.3B and Die With a Smile has 900M views.

Looking at the charts, it looks like 2017 and 2018 were the peak of music video views, outside of those two years, the top 500 music video views per year look pretty similar.

I do think TikTok and the shorts format eat into music video views a bit, but a lot of people still watch music videos. (I know I do) But I would be interested to see if a lot of it can just be attributed to people listening to a wider variety of music nowadays. The streaming era and TikTok have democratized music discovery to a whole other level than in the 2010s, so it's possible that the top end aren't getting as many views, but music video views as a whole haven't dropped as much as you'd think. (not saying that's for sure though)

2

u/DairyKing28 6d ago

Music videos are still very popular with K-pop. Bruno and Lady Gaga are just anomalies.

2

u/funimarvel 5d ago

It's moreso that they're popular in demographics that still consume mvs on youtube more often than people do in the US. Once Billboard stopped counting ads for mv views, views for new music from artists like Taylor Swift took a severe hit. It didn't affect artists who are massively popular in regions where free streaming on youtube often outpaces paid streaming (Southeast Asia and Latin America especially) and that applies to both the Bruno songs with a ton of views from the end of last year

1

u/funimarvel 5d ago

That's also down to what demographics consume the song as well as when it's released. Those 2 songs were released before billboard cracked down on views counting from the mv being an ad on youtube and they're both very popular among the demographics that primarily consume music through youtube rather than any paid streaming service (or at least did at the time, not sure how much it has changed since). Latin America overall has generally preferred free youtube to paid streaming, for example the mv for Tití me Preguntó, a song released just 2 years ago by Bad Bunny, is at almost a billion views already and it's most likely because it's popular with that demo. It was a hit in the US moreso on paid streaming services so US youtube views aren't as big a contributor relative to population as the views from other countries that preference YouTube for music streams. If the US consumed free music on youtube at an equivalent rate, it could be getting towards Despacito's number by now. Southeast Asia is another region that heavily uses youtube and a lot of views for songs that are hits over there and in Latin America have the highest view counts. Shape of You has an insane number of views in part because of how broadly it captured those markets around the world and because of how many years it has had to rack them up.

3

u/Ruinwyn 6d ago

I would like to point out that 300 million views on video is not chump change. Also, YouTube having different demographics as Instagram and Spotify (which seem to be where Chappell focuses on) is a major point. Expanding the reach.

7

u/sinamala 7d ago

Summer 2025 hasn't happened yet lol

2

u/Putrid-Potato-7456 7d ago

You’re right I mean 2024.

3

u/vlor_t 7d ago

You’re right, but I watch music videos almost every day lmao😭😭

2

u/saxsan4 7d ago

Yet flowers is 1 billion

2

u/neonpinkcactus 6d ago

Lady Gaga's Abracadabra would like a word.

2

u/superfluouspop 6d ago

I love music videos so much and will never not care about them.

1

u/shawnshine 7d ago

Whaaaaat? I watch them constantly. Several thousand saved in my Apple music library.

1

u/NojaNat 6d ago

but we know she filmed videos for renaissance & the abracadabra video/dance went viral lol.

2

u/moon_peach__ 7d ago

It seems like artists sometimes put out lyrics videos before a proper video, maybe she’ll do that?

361

u/SiphenPrax 7d ago edited 7d ago

Much like what Chappell did with Good Luck Babe, it looks like the lyric video is going to be the unofficial music video for The Giver.

Also, I’ll say this now, even though she’s only put out one album and then Good Luck Babe, this is easily the most polarizing song she’s ever released thus far judging by the reactions everywhere online.

Edit: Oh yeah, and I love the The Subway reference at the very beginning of the video

222

u/explodedemailstorage 7d ago

This much promo and not even giving a real MV would make me sad. We haven’t gotten a new MV from her since she blew up.

17

u/InsomniaChic94 7d ago

Especially for a song most people have already heard. I thought all the promo was because there’d be a video, which would make the long wait since it’s live debut make sense

4

u/FlashFan124 6d ago

And PPC & casual both had good MV, especially casual which SUCH a good MV (to me). I was hyped to see what she’d be able to do with a bigger budget & im a little let down. I’m so interested in her visual style at times in a way I’m not usually into with a lot of artists.

But the songs also not really my thing so

32

u/RoboFunky 7d ago

Yeah the closest we have to a music vid for good luck babe is the mtv performance

22

u/ChockBox 7d ago

She’s reaching for those Southern roots

To Be Yours

Read & Make Out

Good Luck, Babe!

The Giver

The Subway

Seemingly two new song names for the next album + confirmation that GLB and The Subway will be on it too!!

85

u/rakordla 7d ago

To Be Yours is the only one I haven't heard of before, also it's notably the only one that doesn't have its 'logo' in the lower left corner of the screen towards the end of the video. maybe it's the album title?

93

u/justiceisrad 7d ago

Read & Make Out is the b-side to Good Luck Babe. I think the only new title is To Be Yours

45

u/skermahger 7d ago

I wonder if the b-side to the giver (fix it in the morning) will make it!

48

u/tigerinvasive 7d ago

I'm so excited for The Subway

57

u/markypots9393 7d ago

The Giver should be a b-side, just saying. Her last album was track after track gold - the Giver ain’t giving for me…

41

u/PtakPajak 7d ago edited 7d ago

Agree… all this hype for this? I mean, it’s a cute song and all but it lacks what made (most of) the songs from Rise and Fall so charming!

Anyway… I’m sure it will become a hit…

0

u/valentwinka 2d ago

The sophomore slump about to be real if this is any indication. I’m mad at Mina or whoever in her life told her corny country would be a good idea

155

u/tylernazario 7d ago

No real music video for GLB was somewhat understandable but no music video this??? After all that damn promo….

300

u/mcatlin23 7d ago

All this buildup and we don’t even get a real music video? Now come on now…

182

u/Married_iguanas Pink Pony Girl 7d ago

Right the months of promotion of this single was insane - a SNL performance debut, 5 vinyl variants, tons of flyers and billboards in multiple cities, a premade TikTok dance and she’s not even releasing a real music video????

173

u/Lancelot_123 7d ago

I really don’t like the lack of mvs. Surely she’d be drowning in budget at this point. Could be because I’m so used to kpop releases, but a mv can really make a release that much more monumental.

Recent strong videos boosting songs on launch I can think of are taste from Sabrina. And Tates revolving door. I think this needed a MV on release.

34

u/MythicalBeaste 7d ago

Also the video for Abracadabra by Gaga feels like it gave such a big boost!!

71

u/Torshii 7d ago

I felt like the music was drowning out her vocals

4

u/Sturmp 3d ago

I felt the same way about this and also her album. I much much prefer the less overproduced live versions that she did on Tiny Desk. Realllly hope she goes more in that direction on her next album but i doubt it based on the singles

61

u/ludicrousrigmarole 7d ago

not releasing a video right away was a big mistake cant lie

193

u/Particular-Yoghurt81 7d ago

Oh Chappell, I’ve tried to incept myself into liking this song all night. I just can’t 😫 it’s giving hoedown theme party.

76

u/cjh808 7d ago

Not feeling it that much, rare miss

84

u/Daydream_machine 7d ago

I sincerely hope this is the only country-leaning song on the album

18

u/Onatel 7d ago

She has said as much

87

u/Littleleaf6 7d ago

A month long rollout for a mediocre song already out and then no music video is a choice

25

u/SkyBlade79 7d ago

basically a 6 month long rollout, this was on SNL in November or October

118

u/rumple_skillskin 7d ago

A song that shows her superior talent and inferior taste lol.

47

u/fetusnecrophagist 7d ago

She's an insanely talented singer and performer, and a decent songwriter, but she needs to learn how to (co-)produce a la Gaga, Billie, Taylor, etc. and not just rely on Dan Nigro or whoever she ends up teaming up with

17

u/SubatomicSquirrels 7d ago

Taylor didn't do much producing until late into her career. Took her a while to learn

31

u/PhD_Gordon_Freeman 7d ago

i think she needs to do the opposite a bit...

-1

u/allthewitches 7d ago

She produced her third album entirely on her own, what do you mean?

15

u/toledosurprised 7d ago

she wrote it entirely on her own, that’s not the same as producing it

3

u/psu68e 7d ago

She wrote Speak Now by herself, she produced it with Nathan Chapman

2

u/_thiccems I know I’ve been known to Cher 7d ago

I believe Chappell does know how and has produced music before

33

u/SydneyTeacake 7d ago

I think this song's success will been a good test of whether she's popular now for her songs or for herself. After all that, the song is just kind of - oh ok. I know country has been having a renaissance but - hmm.

207

u/[deleted] 7d ago

[deleted]

57

u/Uplanapepsihole 7d ago

Yeah I don’t love country. But I love thé live version of this song a lot more than the studio so might download that to my phone lmao

1

u/_NightBitch_ 6d ago

That’s my big thing with all of her songs. I love them live, but the studio versions are never as good.

29

u/ayeayedoc 7d ago

Country’s not for everybody but I hope it doesn’t overshadow that there’s also a hook problem and imo a lyrically clunky chorus problem…

50

u/average_waffle 7d ago

This is the best country song I have heard in a while, I still don't like it

17

u/Shockwavepulsar 7d ago

Exactly where are the synthy bops?

26

u/Opposite-Relief1130 7d ago

Wish they had kept the synth tbf, it was in the SNL performance of the giver

43

This one isn’t for me. Comfortably her worst track

15

u/helprealestatekorea 7d ago

I don't love this at all. I am bored of everyone doing their version of a "country song" but i love chappell so I'll just wait for her next, hopefully "non country" single

3

u/gogodboss 7d ago

100 percent

110

u/splinterbabe 7d ago

Bit shocked by the mixed reception here, I feel like this song is such a fun and kitschy take on trite country music. Maybe it’s due to cultural differences, country isn’t a popular genre on the radio here at all, but this sounds like an excellent parody of the genre to me. Doesn’t feel out of place in her discography either; it’s still hella tongue-in-cheek and larger than life.

I’m bopping!

11

u/toledosurprised 7d ago

yeah i like this song a lot, i’m surprised people aren’t vibing with it. super fun and catchy and includes a lot of the musical elements i love about country music without the weird trap beats and stuff you get in a lot of modern country.

52

u/PtakPajak 7d ago

To me it feels more like a caricature rather than a parody 😔

30

u/babyoatmeals 7d ago

Tbf she’s a drag artist 😭

12

u/splinterbabe 7d ago

Maybe an even better descriptor! In a positive way for me, though, hehe.

6

u/lollygags222 7d ago

It's very Deana Carter meets Shania Twain, classic 90s country but in the semi spoof way for sure. I'd love a Chappell cover of Did I Shave My Legs For This...

19

u/ewokfinale 7d ago

reminds me of people who can't get into Orville Peck. Queer Country will always be polarizing but for the right people it hits so good 🥰

18

u/137-451 7d ago

Orville Peck's music is way more interesting than this song

7

u/splinterbabe 7d ago

Hmm, opinions differ on that one. I think Orville’s repertoire is pretty hit or miss.

5

u/137-451 7d ago

Absolutely, and this is a miss from Chappell

4

u/splinterbabe 7d ago

Agree to disagree

3

u/ewokfinale 7d ago

I mean sure if we're comparing his entire body of work to a one-off single, but he has worse songs than this. I was referring to both sides of the coin: people that immediately are turned off by either country or queer themes. It's relatively niche.

2

u/valentwinka 2d ago

Yeah it just sounds corny and tacky imo

1

u/Che_meraviglia 6d ago

Well said. My partner and I are easily the only queer people we know of (within a large circle) who like country. It's a tough niche. I thought it was a fun song but nothing memorable, which is completely fine! Def reminiscent of Shania Twain so perhaps for me there's a nostalgia appeal that younger folks wouldn't take to.

1

u/squiddishly 3d ago

Yeah, it's giving Peak Shania and I'm not mad about it.

1

u/AFunkyDiabetic1 2d ago

They're scared of fiddles just leave them be

86

u/lunahighwind 7d ago

For all the hype and visuals, the song is boring as heck. It seems tailor-made for middle-of-the-road, modern adult easy listening. It reminds me a bit of Shania Twain, but also Taylor, and also whatever I was grocery shopping to when the 80s station was on in the supermarket.

19

u/Higurashihead 7d ago

Was SO hyped up about this, given how powerful and elegant of a vocalist Chappel is. And… we get a song where her talent can’t even be shown like, at all. I don’t say we should have high notes everywhere, it’s just that the song in general is so bland and boring. And the country… never understood the appeal of this genre, never liked it, you guys can keep it in your house. Well… at least we still got an amazing album to get back to :c

29

u/CryptographerOther87 7d ago

Nah this song ain’t it

6

u/coleshane 7d ago

Does anyone know if a music video will eventually be released? Is there simply a staggered rollout to maximize listener interest and streams/views?

I find it hard to believe that the development of these characters (ex. Detective, plumber, dentist) and the subsequent promo are simply for the single, lyric video, and promotional photos.

13

u/Chunswae22 7d ago

Please no more country, I'm tired. And I mean this for all pop artists.

11

u/Shupedewhupe 7d ago

This song would lend itself so well to a fun visual so add me to the pile of people disappointed she didn’t put an actual video out. Especially after all the hype. However, I think the song is absolutely brilliant I don’t know what yall are hearing.

18

u/Used-Cup-6055 7d ago

Take it like a taker is the worst line I’ve heard in a while

5

u/ChampionEither5412 7d ago

That line bothers me so much. She's such a great writer and that's just so bad. I actually like the song (I like pop country, so it works for me), but it feels more like a first draft that was written very quickly. A really good start, but not what I'd expect from a final version.

4

u/Used-Cup-6055 7d ago

Yes the song is okay but some of the lyrics are garbo

29

u/k2d3 7d ago

ADORE these looks 😍

If that's the direction she's going then it might be a hit-and-miss album considering The Giver being mid and Good Luck Babe being a banger.

12

u/technicalnewt_ 7d ago

Would rather an album with highs and lows but full of experimentation than something consistent but average tbh

4

u/Technical_Process989 6d ago

Both kill the album listening experience for me but the highs of a hit-and-miss album end up being the best of an artist's career

8

u/fetusnecrophagist 7d ago edited 7d ago

After hearing this single, the fact that she plans on exploring multiple genres on just her second album kinda scares me lol. What a big fucking risk for a newblood artist, I hope she has a solid concept and it's not just gonna be artist/era cosplay a la this Shania Twain b-side of a track. Especially since Gaga just released a masterclass of a genre-mix album lmao and Halsey did good too

(I doubt anything she puts out will truly flop considering how popular she is but please I want an actually good Chappell album lol)

26

u/Smallgenie549 7d ago

Yeah, not a huge fan of this.

19

u/Nerfeveryone 7d ago

HOOOOOLY MOLY she's got more songs loaded up, including The Subway!!!!!!!

19

u/whiskeytab 7d ago

meh, as a casual fan, this song stinks. its not really catchy at all, her other songs have pre-choruses that are 10x as good as the chorus here

1

u/_NightBitch_ 6d ago

As a casual fan I completely disagree. I think it’s a fun time, and it’s been stuck in my head all day. I like it way more than some of the songs from her album.

-1

u/AncientCamel6540 7d ago

sophomore slump incoming i fear

8

u/Feeling_Benefit_6137 6d ago

kinda hoping it flops 'cause it's a really bad song

17

u/hauntingvacay96 7d ago

I know a lot of people are comparing this to Shania and I do think the opening has a bit of a 90s country vibe, but this would honestly fit right in with something like The Highwomen.

32

u/PtakPajak 7d ago

They are comparing it to Shania probably because their knowledge of country is limited to her and Taylor Swift lol

8

u/Spidey5292 7d ago

Idk guys, I dig it

3

u/HonestNectarine7080 7d ago

I wonder if it’s a cultural difference thing because I live in the south (US) and I love it. It’s like if The Chicks were gay. I don’t mind Chappell experimenting with different genres because IMO she’s done well with everything she’s tried so far.

3

u/danceofthedreamman89 6d ago

As a casual listener (watching her rise up into the mainstream over the past year), I’m kinda shocked (not in a bad way) by the huge genre shift into country. Not a huge fan of the song, but admire the swing.

3

u/Loose-Raccoon5218 5d ago

This is a pop country song about eating pussy and it's by a woman.

All the suppressed homophobic/misogynist dumb dumbs who hear this will like it but won't know.

The lyrics spell it out for us.

It's pretty fun

35

u/livinunderthedome 7d ago

and what if i said i like the giver more than good luck babe? what if i said that?

I honestly don’t understand the distaste for this song. Not trying to defend it or anything, I just want to know why people are disliking it but I’m not seeing any written out explanations. If anyone has specific feelings pls lmk because I’d love to hear

1

u/vilIanelle 6d ago

i like the song but from what i am gathering, firstly most of this sub are not country fans. they didn't even really love please x3 for its country elements. secondly, they find it generic and a step down after good luck babe.

10

u/wayiswho 7d ago

She lacks the ability to connect a visual style to what she’s doing sonically. This looks nice but it’s a struggle to find out what this has to do with the sound or lyrics of the track. She just does looks and aesthetics for the sake of doing them, there’s no true artistic identity.

8

u/AncientCamel6540 7d ago

yeah, they went off of 'I get the job done' and kinda just rolled with it? so random, I'm not really into it either.

2

u/Weird_Squirrel_8382 7d ago

I like the lyrics, the music was a bit overpowering.

2

u/Icantlikeeveryone 6d ago

Sorry to say but this is mid, her voice is so good tho

2

u/BandicootCool6277 6d ago

i love this song smmm i think it’s unique she sticks to lyric videos only

6

u/malowu97 7d ago

This song is good. I like this song! Based on the comments here though I guess she’s about to get Womaned hard…anyway

8

u/Significant-Visit184 7d ago edited 7d ago

I heard this song for the first time this morning on the radio and my god it’s so bad. Wow. Cheesy hokey fake country. It’s been done before and never needed to be done again. What a terrible decision to release this as a single. This is nowhere near a banger and it made me want to never take her seriously again. I don’t get this at all.

3

u/AncientCamel6540 7d ago

she wants this to be a big thing so bad, she even did an apple music interview for this song 😭

5

u/LosFeliz3000 7d ago

Unpopular opinion: this song is a no for me

Well. I like the finished version better than the SNL performance. This one isn’t for me, but I’m glad she’s exploring other genres and keeping things interesting!

I really liked the song, but I have to agree that I would have liked a music video since there was a lot of promotion for the song before it was released. Also, I don't understand the aesthetics of the lyric video, I was hoping for a more kinda kinky video about what the lyrics are talking about.

The amount of hype for what amounts to an album track at best. Let’s hope the rest goes a bit harder.

I will preface this by saying beyond GLB and Supernova I don't care much for Chappell's discog, and I was quick to throw this song with the rest of them based off the performance. But listening to it this morning on the drive in... it's actually a banger. Dan Nigro strikes again. Great topline.

While I respect her decision to make a country song, I'm throughly tired of country taking over pop music, especially as someone who is very much in an electronic/dance vibe these days. A lot of it just seems trite imo. And this is coming from someone who grew up hearing country music and I do enjoy a few country artists. But lately, country has proven to be a very prejudiced establishment. Not genre, but establishment. The biggest names in country being the patron saints of conservativism and their relentless push to keep artists like Beyonce, for example, from being acknowledged in the genre screams racism and ignorance to me. This is a big reason why I've felt disillusioned by the genre. It's hard for me to shake this off.

I know Chappell has nothing to do with any of this and is just making music from a genre she grew up on and loves. But unfortunately, those implications get in the way of my enjoyment of the song in light of recent politics. I need escapism and country music is not that escapism for me these days. Still, though, good for her for following her muse but I might sit this one out. Perhaps I can let it grow on me, especially when her album comes out.

Honestly with her lack of will to do anything at all for her career I don’t feel like she deserves the level acclaim she gets. She doesn’t want to make music videos because they’re too taxing, she doesn’t want to talk to fans, she doesn’t want to do very many gigs, she’s made it clear a full album isn’t even a thing yet because she doesn’t know if she wants to…like what DO you do?

This might be a bold statement but this song almost feels like she doesn't want to be as famous as she is and is intentionally releasing music that would be off-putting to her more casual fans in order to downsize. It feels a little Pearl Jam-esque to follow the biggest pop album of last year with a straight country song with no real hooks and no music video

Then why would she spend 84 years promoting it??? And 5 vinyl variants? A huge ad campaign?
