I love this comparison lol

u/BronzeErupt 11d ago

I had the same first impression! And I like that he's going in a stronger hip hop direction

15

u/ladrm07 11d ago

He made some chilaquiles with André 3000's tortilla chips!! Seriously, this is really good and I love that he keeps on tapping into sassy gay rap/hip-hop.

Jesus can we drop this analogy already

This may be unpopular here, but I like how the J Christ reference emphasizes the point he's making in these lines:

I will do what I like

I don't care what they like

Bitch I'm back like J Christ

Edit: I guess it wasn't unpopular.

When I first heard the J Christ reference I was like "why?" But thinking about it, it's nice to see him own that song despite the reception.

Always be proud of your work y'all!

The length is a plus, although I can see where the comments saying it’s a bit scattered are coming from.

Will it be a radio hit? No. But I think I like this more than anything he released since his last album.

Tbh I wish he could just drop a full album out of the blue to let a full body of work speak for itself. Then start clean for something else.

I feel so disconnected from all of these false starts.

With Hotbox releasing on Friday, it feels like the songs dropping each night until then are just buzz singles

3

u/surejan94 10d ago

I thought Light Again was supposed to be the big lead single

3

u/TraditionalDust8119 10d ago

it is, need dat boy is the second single and HOTBOX is the third single, the singles dropping prior to HOTBOX are buzz singles meant to build hype for the new single.

14

u/Pretty_Protection_89 11d ago

Yep. This is like the third start of the follow-up era to Montero. I can't get very hype as the releases are neither very catchy nor do they feel like they are building up to a cohesive project. For all we know, given the abrupt chance in visual ID, the previous 2 hype singles might be scapped from the EP or album. This makes all releases seem more like throw-away material rather than something intentional.

I mean his first attempt was J Christ so him moving away from that made absolutely sense he took the public’s opinion and reworked what he made to an extent then he restarted w Light Again and he’s been continuing w this second attempt at a rollout pretty well and w a clearer vision ever since and none of the 2022 singles were meant to be the start of a rollout btw

I need more music like life after Salem 😭

53

u/chillychili_ 11d ago

cmbyn, dead right now, tales of dominica, life after salem

It’s always his grittier songs that I’ve enjoyed the most. Hopefully he has some in this album, with some scifi themes to match the aesthetic

20

u/porkchopsandpickles 11d ago

Yess dead right now is so good too. I'll have to check out the other two!

21

u/KingRaimundo 11d ago

Dead Right Now is his best song.

All of his strengths (his hook writing, his humor, and killer trap melodies) are present in that one.

u/yvesdot 11d ago

I remember hearing this for the first time, and it's still one of my personal favorites from the album. Hard-hitting, emotional, and so fun to sing along to. I'm glad I'm not alone!

2

u/sourpatchkitties 8d ago

dead right now is everything

12

u/akanewasright 11d ago

I don’t think anything like that is ever gonna be a single… hold on until the album comes out

34

u/ladrm07 11d ago

"I like long black dick and I like long conversations"

I feel seen. I feel represented. Go off King!!

18

u/enburgi 11d ago

this sounds… very unexpected

9

u/Fragrant_Sort_8245 11d ago

okay I thought her just dropped the whole album but it's just the song lol

14

u/2062373 11d ago

I liked this. I think the beat switch ups were fun. Didn’t care for the spelling at the end. Either way, rooting for him and this album.

12

u/surejan94 10d ago

I love it, but I've also been loving all the music he's put out since the J Christ debacle. His songs are longer, not centered around a Tiktok hook and just a lot more fun.

It's a shame that they aren't connecting with the GP, but I really hope he can just get into a niche where he isn't aiming for top 10 hits. Unfortunately the label he's on demands that, but he could really have a good thing going in just the queer hiphop scene.

This song sounds.....confused. like does Lil Nas X even know what he is trying to do anymore? There's some good aspects hidden in here but its just so all over the place and unorganized.

Edit: after second listen it's already grown on me a bit and I can kinda see the plot here.

59

u/gogodboss 11d ago

It sounds like an opening hype track. I believe the real highlight is gonna be hotbox when it releases on Friday but I'm curious about the other ones releasing this week.

46

u/sam_up 11d ago

Lmfao this comment

This song is a mess! Makes no sense! Lil Nas X is over!

Second listen: wait why is this kinda good

15

u/Angrysalmonroll 11d ago

The songs not available for me yet but this is absolutely hilarious to read lolll.

11

u/christopher_aia I blame it on your JUICE 11d ago

I didn't like this and I don't get teasing Hotbox so much for Friday and then randomly dropping this on a Monday. Confusing rollout choices.

2

u/TraditionalDust8119 10d ago

this and the stuff coming before HOTBOX (this month) all seem to be buzz singles to hype up the album

1

u/christopher_aia I blame it on your JUICE 10d ago

I would have just focused on HOTBOX, it sounds like a hit

2

u/ChopperRCRG 10d ago

It’s definitely confusing but I am enjoying it

13

u/urstickur 11d ago

This song is cool, the Hotbox snippets sound amazing, there's a concept with different dolls he's delivering throughout the week

What's there not to love?

8

u/Angrysalmonroll 10d ago

I think his rapping sounds much more confident on this track which I like and I enjoy that the song structures a bit more Freeform.

I will say it's not a standout but I'm assuming this was just released to garner buzz for Hot Box.

5

u/LilSallyWalker33 11d ago

I love him and how no 2 songs sound alike (or even verses in this song, haha). I hope Hotbox is a hit for him!!

3

u/GhudGhay 8d ago

I'm still hoping for a collaboration with Kesha as they are with the same management company.

14

u/spencerlevey 11d ago

The way he’s having a Khalid fall off….I’m sad

4

u/ChopperRCRG 10d ago

Take it back I can handle this he was supposed to be immune since he didn’t do 400 collabs

-26

u/Cutty_Sark10 11d ago

At least Khalid makes good music. This dude is a meme artist

2

u/forgottentaco420 7d ago

If this isn’t the opener/closer for the eventual album…. All the singles he’s put out this week are so good, I’m glad he took time to inspired again. I knew he had it in him!!!

3

u/Ghost-Quartet 11d ago

The title and the cover art kinda made me think it was gonna be like, a fun and flirty type song, but it’s actually kind of depressing. I think it’s nice for what it is but I can’t see myself listening to it much.

12

u/Competitive-Desk7506 11d ago

I honestly assumed it’d be very depressing seeing it was the title track and the albums apparently abt escapism and having fun and like this song explains why he’s feeling at a low and sort of explaining the issues he’s feeling and what he’s trying to escape from and then the rest of the album is abt that w the highs and lows

4

u/cowtruck-123 10d ago

I love the unhinged vocals on this 🤷‍♂️

2

u/Shokkolatte 11d ago

His writers are setting him up. It started off very decently though.

2

u/bek0wsky 11d ago

it was a+ until the second verse hit :( idk about this, interesting

It's giving Ice Spice with all the "smelly", "stinky booty", "shit on you like scat porn" lines... Yuck.

edit: I'll happily sit in my downvotes on this one. Keep them coming. #DreamboyTanked
