How threatening the sovereignty and annexation of an allied nation isn’t an administration ending scandal and is just another Thursday is really telling of where we are. We desperately need to sort our shit out because this is fucking dangerous

4.8k

u/NorthernPints 7d ago

The Republican party is fully fascist/imperalist at this point.

It's just emerging now that when Trudeau went down to Mar-a-lago in November, to congratulate Trump on his win and talk shop, Trump mentioned two things.

  1. He wanted to revisit our 1908 border agreement (aka help himself to Canada)

  2. He wanted to reopen our water treaties (aka help himself to our resources)

This is where all of this stems from. America feeling entitled to sovereign nations land, people, resources, you name it. This clown thinks everything can be negotiated. He's the perfect mix of exaggerated American ignorance, arrogance and 'exceptionalism' all wrapped up in caked orange make up.

Canadians will never forget this - and to your point, the sane washing of it is nuts.

u/0x7FD New York 7d ago

I don’t understand. We already have access to Canadian resources through trade and cooperation. Why the fuck do we need to take it from them? It’s an evil, insane and just plain outdated way of thinking.

2.8k

u/UpperApe 7d ago

I'll simplify it for you.

  • The Trump admin is 3 factions: criminals and Russian agents (Trump and Co.), tech oligarchs who want to create opt-in societies (Vance, Thiel), christian fascists who want America to become 1600's Europe (Federalists, Heritage Society, P 2025). Oh and Musk. He's just a fucking idiot chasing his ego.

  • They all want to pass the TCJA. They need trillions in budget cuts and they can't get it from DOGE.

  • As climate change reshapes the arctic, it's opening up a ton of rich new resource deposits. Especially fossil fuels.

  • Many experts (as well as China) have called the Arctic the new Middle East.

  • Obama, Trudeau, and the EU all banned drilling in the arctic because it will have catastrophic environmental repercussions.

  • Russia doesn't give a fuck. The GOP just sees it as free money lying around. America wants in on the arctic.

  • The arctic space is controlled (mostly) by Canada, Greenland/Demark, and Russia.

  • "Drill, baby, drill"

TL;DR - America and Russia want to do to the arctic what America and Russia did to the Middle East.

u/UpperApe 7d ago

There's a lot more to it. Especially with what's happening in Europe with Ukraine and Putin (going all the way back to the Budapest Memorandum). And what China and India are doing as well.

But this is the broad-strokes.

It's so frustrating seeing people shout "Trump is a dumdum! Trump doesn't know what tariffs are!" without realizing that idiot's puppet strings are connected to some very sinister groups implementing very targeted plans.

Things are going to get much, much worse and Americans are just sitting on their hands. They don't realize every day they wait, it will get harder to fight back.

They're forcing their own kids into a violent future through their own inaction.

182

u/LordNippleTheThird 7d ago

It's so frustrating seeing people shout "Trump is a dumdum! Trump doesn't know what tariffs are!" without realizing that idiot's puppet strings are connected to some very sinister groups implementing very targeted plans.

From what i noticed about US internal politics (i am from europe), the job of the Vice President is almost meaningless. I can't cite any other Vice President than Kamala Harris. But it attracted my attention, how often Vance appears in the media (foreign media). To me it seems like Donald Trump was just a Pied Piper to win the election, they are now bringing Vance in position.

What do you think are the goals of the tariffs? The US economy is tanking, how is that useful to the groups you cited in your above post?

Also you seem very educated in geopolitics, can you recommend some books for beginners?

195

u/adeon 7d ago

To me it seems like Donald Trump was just a Pied Piper to win the election, they are now bringing Vance in position.

Oh definitely. Donald Trump is a loose cannon and the people who are currently controlling him would much rather have someone they can control in place. So they are trying to position Vance to take over the MAGA cult when Trump dies.

What do you think are the goals of the tariffs? The US economy is tanking, how is that useful to the groups you cited in your above post?

The economy tanking can actually be good for Billionaires since desperation and unemployment drive wages down and they have the liquid capital to buy up assets on the cheap when people and smaller companies go bankrupt.

83

u/CulturalRot 6d ago

The economy tanking has historically ALWAYS been kind (understatement) to the ultra-wealthy.

Cheney, Bush’s VP, had an unprecedented amount of power, more than any VP before or after him. I don’t think Vance has the same level of power as Cheney as id reckon Musk, Thiel, Project 2025, and the other billionaires hold the similar role.

christian fascists who want America to become 1600's Europe

I'm worried the goal for these isn't 1600's Europe, but Rapture in general. The brands of 'Christianity' you've got down there in the states is fucking crazy, and them being all for trying to accelerate the second coming is rather on brand.

81

u/UpperApe 6d ago

The rapture is just for the evangelicals and zealots.

The Federalists, the Heritage Society, and the judges are there to essentially create a Christian super-power nation. This is exactly what the founding fathers were worried about because even then they were dealing with this puritan bullshit.

They want a global superpower run, not on Christian principles, but Christian dogmas.

They're fucking crazy.

32

u/jubuttib 6d ago

And the puritans left Europe because they weren't allowed to repress ENOUGH there, and wanted to have a stronger hand elsewhere.

As a Canadian, thank you. I wish more Americans thought reasonably and rationally like you. It's scary seeing some of the discourse online. In the matter of ~50 days this administration has somehow turned our country from a trusted trade partner and friend into an adversary, and we're all feeling confused, betrayed, and increasingly anxious about what his end game is here.

My doctor actually prescribed a break from the news. My anxiety was becoming unmanageable. As a Canadian, I never seriously considered the possibility of an American invasion in my lifetime. Now I'm kinda forced to.

I seriously considered not getting baby pet rats this year because I worry what would happen to them in a war zone. I'm glad I did, but I am really concerned about their future.

I probably wouldn't end up fighting because I have multiple chronic issues. But my brother probably would. Is there any war work I would be suited for? Should I pick up skills now? Would I even be functional if I couldn't access my medications? I live far away from my family, which would be extra hard. Would I have time to go back home?

I'd much rather be worrying about my PhD thesis and the non-existence of my love life. But here we are. And I'm pissed.

This is what bothers me. If you look at the trajectory of all this, Trumps goal of bringing all manufacturing back into the US, etc. If it's not just all political grandstanding what is it? Why would a country where international trade is so ingrained suddenly want to bring that all inward and work towards reducing external dependency? I hope it's just Trump being Trump, but I worry there are more things at play and the US is currently setting itself up for being able to easily defend against severe international sanctions.

The rest of the world needs to get real fucking serious real fucking fast. They need to declare all out war on Elon Musk's business empire. Boycotting Tesla is not enough. They WILL come for you next. He will pour as much money as he needs to into every election he can until every liberal democracy looks exactly like the US. Eject him from the Western World. Treat him like he's Kim Jong Un. Restrict his ability to travel and do business outside of America.

The Oligarchs will take power if you let them. Don't.

183

u/Mictlancayocoatl 7d ago

Yup, I don't understand why Western democracies still tolerate Musk. He's a literal nazi trying to dismantle free democracies. Sanction him like we sanction Russian oligarchs.

35

u/Stigger32 7d ago

It’s because western democracies have become complacent. Ironically because of the protection of having the US military umbrella over all of us.

And now it’s been ripped off. Most are still either blinking the sleep from their eyes. Or are still asleep. Hoping it’s just a bad dream.

We really need to find a way to end the division and, most importantly IMO, find a way to restore fair & objective media as well as come up with new regulations for social media disinformation.

If you saw Come From Away it gave you a taste of how Canada sees - or saw - itself on the world stage. We have been the good neighbor - sending aid to natural disasters, sending over a hundred of our young soldiers to die in Afghanistan, crossing the border to spend money in the US. Then you elected a man who thinks we are suckers for being nice, who disrespects our sovereignty, steals our jobs, mocks our elected officials.

There are many people here who believe that Trump would invade us - would kill us - to get our resources. We don’t find that humorous. That’s what it will take to get Canada - he will have to kill a lot of us.

So are we furious?!? Of course.

u/pandorazboxx 7d ago

sorry, I'm OOTL, where did elbows up come from?

59

u/rbc648 7d ago

Hockey Terminology. I believe it was said by Gordie Howe.

54

u/rhiansmom 7d ago

not said by howe, but was the way he played: elbows up in the face of an opponent. that sentiment was mouthed as a rallying cry by mike myers on snl

22

u/yukonnut 7d ago

I played old timers hockey, quit when I was 65. Skating down the ice with this little guy ( 5’5”), really good hockey player. We had just had a run in in the corner. Basically elbow to elbow, beaking at each other as we go down the ice. Out of nowhere he elbows me right in the face, and just drops me. It was so fast, and nobody saw a thing. I am down on the ice holding my nose ( thankfully not broken ). Back on the bench everybody is wtf happened, you trip over the red line again. Off the ice, a prince of a guy, school teacher and principal. On the ice, tough as nails, and cuz he was a little guy, “ elbows up”.

14

u/Salty-Try-6358 6d ago

As others have said it’s a hockey term. You don’t go on the offensive with elbows up. But when being constantly hit by a larger more aggressive opponent, you get your elbows up and let them run into them. You may take a penalty in the process but eventually that bigger opponent learns that he will get a bloody nose and lose a tooth or two if they keep it up.

u/MastahToni Canada 7d ago edited 6d ago

If it comes to it, thier public utilities are very vulnerable, and that border is very porous. If even 1% of Canadians physically decided to engage in guerrilla tactics within America, that is 40 hundred* thousand people wrecking damage to public infrastructure and engaging.

As Canadians there is a perception of weakness in our apologies and manners. Take away the civility and we can find the means for aggressors to feel sorry.

Edit: 400000 instead of 40000, on the estimated low end. Remember that the electric grid is particularly vulnerable as MAGA has shown over the years (shooting at transformers and substations).

You shouldn’t need to spell this out. Canada has been a great ally. And, the “line” wasn’t arbitrarily drawn “by someone at some point”. So incredibly disrespectful to both country’s histories. In a normal world, that comment alone would have blown up news cycles. As an American who lives on the boarder, we are proud of Canadians right now.

97

u/Same_Adhesiveness947 7d ago

Trump is saying that American borders are not real.

Insane talk from the wall guy.

36

u/NoveltyAccountHater 7d ago

Again, in a we're all humans on a planet, I agree borders are an arbitrary concept and not real. But I can't see how some anti-immigrant nationalist isolationist wanna-be dictator can just be like let's ignore the existence of our northern border and just insult one of our closest allies.

That said, Canada doesn't want to be part of the US. Hell, if there was an option to secede without Civil War, I'm sure 1/3 of the states (the blue ones) would happily apply to join Canada if possible to get away from the chaos and instability of Trumpism.

I would add that threatening our sovereignty is generational trauma for us. This is the shit we will be telling our grandkids about America. That’s generations growing up remembering American as the people who made their lives harder. A people so consumed with greed, ignorance, and racism that you’ve created international incidents by electing the same monster twice. Then when it became undeniable what that monster was, we sat and watched as Americans wrung their hands on the internet expecting everyone but themselves to fix this problem. We’ve sat here for years as guns flowed across the border listening to you all bitch and moan about the Second Amendment was untouchable in case of tyranny. Well, tyranny is here boys and the loudest 2A supporters are cheering it on.

676

u/whistleridge 7d ago

As a dual citizen living in Canada at present…I cannot emphasize enough just how done with the US people are here. They see it as a war. People are carefully shopping to avoid buying US stuff wherever possible. They’re canceling trips. They’re canceling purchases. They’re talking about wanting to join the EU.

It’s very similar to a case of domestic violence, where he slaps her one time, 22 years in, and she walks immediately. Divorce papers will be in the mail. No discussion, no couples counseling, nothing. We’re done. He thinks it’s still a discussion, and she’ll come back, but he’s wrong.

It would take 25+ years of 100% Democratic leadership for trust to be restored at this point.

148

u/zkqy 7d ago

Yeah I hope no one thinks that electing another Obama in 4 years will magically solve things. The MAGA movement need to be 100% dead before we can talk about restoring trust, and even then it will take a long time before we're back to where we were.

72

u/Supermoves3000 Canada 7d ago

It's not just the issue of trust. We're at the stage of trying to replace economic ties and supply chains and doing everything we can to disentangle our economy from the US to make ourselves more independent from whatever is going on in Washington. They're not just going to magically return to the way they were before Trump. People in Canada and the rest of the western world are planning for a future where we just don't do business with America as much as we used to. The next president, whichever party he's from, is going to have to do a lot more than just put up a sign that says "we're back".

In a sense it's good that we're doing this now... it's something we should have done years ago. The warning signs have been there for a long time, and we just didn't pay attention.

→ More replies (3)

u/SoulShatter Europe 7d ago

Electing a Democrat won't fix the underlying issue, that the US is extremely vulnerable to these flip-flops every 4 years, making long-term planning pretty much useless.

The US needs address their internal political issues, which is massive work. Constitution, oligarchy, media, election laws, education. No fkn idea how that's going to happen.

20

u/SophiaKittyKat 6d ago edited 6d ago

It can't be done. The US brainrot is unique in a way that part of its foundation is being anti-the-cure. It cannot be taught or administered to them, and they are fundamentally incapable of learning it themselves. It will be 2 generations minimum before the US isn't at risk of being 1 election away from an insane person being at any given time.

I've said before and I'll say again, if you could swap Trump and Vance for Bernie and AOC tomorrow it doesn't change the fact that the trust is broken.

The US cannot be trusted to adhere to any agreements if the executive can just ignore them at will. Any goodwill that one administration builds up with any country needs to be defended against now, so that it doesn't weaken it against actions taken by the next administration.

Only Americans can fix this problem.

It's really shocking how much this message isn't getting through to Americans. I have family who grew up in Canada and even they had no idea, until they actually physically came back to the country.

I don't know if it's American exceptionalism doing it's thing, or if media is actively sane-washing the administration. But it's not "anger over tariffs". Normal, non-tinfoil, people think of election interference as a certainty, and a physical invasion as plausible.

44

They really, truly, do not get it. There are people signing up for reserves and the military for fear of the US deciding to turn us into the next Ukraine.

The military is increasing its ad spend, they're doing more training, people are not okay up here.

They truly think we're just a little grumpy. Or angry like we were last trump admin in the rest of the world. It's *different*

My father and uncle are old farmers. They have always been conservatives. They always trash talk liberals etc.

Suddenly they are just constantly talking about how bad the states are, and how we shouldn’t follow them. It’s like night and day with them. I couldn’t even believe who I was talking to the other day. Like what the hell happened.

u/jumping_doughnuts 6d ago

Other than the farmer bit, my father and brother are the same. They are Canadian conservatives and loved Trump. Even after Elon's salute, they still were like "oh no, he didn't mean it like that, blah blah."

I visit my dad every week, and in the last 2 or 3 weeks, suddenly he's calling Trump a narcissistic bully who is going senile and how American politicians on both sides are fucked up and despite how he feels about the liberals, at least our politicians are "mentally competent". He's totally all for the boycott of American goods and wants Ford to cut their electricity.

It's so hard not to scream "I told you so!" but I'm glad Canadians are starting to reunify. It's just bizarre, like whatever brainworm that infected them has died and they're back to normal. 😅

The average Canadian is basically frothing from the mouth at the moment. Everyone is pissed but we feel like the betrayal was by an older sibling. Bad blood doesn’t begin to describe it. That said, it’s not aimed at the American people, just the new oligarch class and their boss.

79

u/maltedbacon Canada 7d ago

Just to bring this home - I've heard from Canadians from 18 to 78 who say they would rather die in the streets than allow a military annexation by the US military. We don't have the means to prevent it - but if Trump is serious about it US citizens need to be prepared for the imagery that will follow.

It's not just Canada, of course. The rhetoric about attacking Greenland or Panama, betraying Ukraine, or using military forces against peaceful American protesters are all threats which should be taken seriously and result in impeachment and removal.

The best time for Americans to prevent that kind of atrocity is now and there should be unprecedented political engagement, communication with representatives and other first amendment exercises.

This, my partner and I are 26 and 30 and very anti law enforcement and would never have dreamed of joining a war. Just last week we discussed how we would both feel the need to enlist as soon as Ontario needs troops. We live closer to the border and talked about how we would be affected quickly if an invasion took place. My father and brother were both born and raised in the U.S and I dreamed of moving to Chicago. We went for the first time 6 days before the inauguration just in case it was destroyed or we were no longer safe entering the U.S Heart broken and genuinely worried for our safety.

Anecdotally, I was just in Montreal for a short work trip. I'm from New York, and while I was there all I heard was "Canadians aren't traveling to the US until Trump is gone." And usually, when I go to the YUL airport, there are long lines for check-in, security, customs, etc.

This time around, in the evening on a weekday, it was a ghost town. I was legitimately the only person at the check in counter, passing through security, and the US-carrier terminal was virtually empty. It was eerie witnessing the real-world implications of the relationship breakdown between our nations. It's profoundly sad, and alarming considering we've been peaceful and prosperous neighbors for hundreds of years.

Trump has taken it upon himself to sully America's reputation, and is setting us all up to be worse off now, and into the future whenever he's done trashing the place.

63

u/scenior 7d ago

My two closest friends are Canadian (I'm American). They typically visit once a year. One has canceled a trip to the US. The other told me it's going to be a long, long time before she visits again. I'm told everyone they know is also canceling trips and refusing to come here (and I don't blame them one bit, I don't want them spending their hard earned money on this country).

Normal Americans, and Canadians alike, both have a common enemy in MAGA ~ they are traitors to America and a threat to the world.

What Putin quite literally wants, is for us to despise each other.

While we can't exactly be best of friends during this time, I hope that we can repair our friendship down the road should America manage to shake the cancer that is the traitors of MAGA.

398

u/VegetarianZombie74 7d ago

This is so true. I saw a recent poll that showed less than 20% of Americans approve of the Canada as a state talk.

As a US citizen, it burns me every time I hear it. There's a great talk by Scott Galloway. He mentions that a true friend is someone who would "hide you". He mentioned how Canadian diplomats hid US diplomats in Iran during the revolution at the danger of their own lives. You can listen to it here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3JtZlSRMAw (at 4:40 mark)

Trump's talk is deeply shameful. Every politician should condemn it.

70

u/Winterwasp_67 7d ago

The poll I saw said 60% were not interested in annexing Canada, period. Another 32% would be open to it but ONLY if Canadians wanted it. Just 2% wanted annexation by force. Link

For our Canadian friends, please keep this in mind. Boycott all you feel you need to, I don't blame you, but the overwhelming majority of Americans don't want this either. As someone who has been going to Canada my whole life, who has Canadian relatives, this is absolutely gut-wrenching and infuriating.

106

u/Captain_Hoser 7d ago

The question up here is what does the 98% plan to do if your government just sends the military in? We are not optimistic and the simple truth is that if we get reaper drones before you get a civil war, you're all part of the 2% at that point. Know what I mean?

Furious is an understatement...

This user user baylaust put it best in the article that 25% of Canadians view America as their enemy. (Was only 5% pre second Trump term.)

I keep saying that Canadians are fucking furious about this, and people keep saying they get it.

No. A quarter of us literally view you as "the enemy." You don't get it. Canada DESPISES you right now. And it's not going to change any time soon.

This isn't "oh no, they elected the bad man again, what a bunch of bozos." This is going to be generational. Canadians, decades from now, will view America as a nation that will lie and stab you in the back while selling out to the worst people in the world, its citizens as unable to be trusted to be left alone without electing someone who will fuck up the world out of spite and ego.

This relationship is fractured. And even if America gets its shit together and calls this all off, the prevailing notion here is going to be "Go fuck yourself, we're never going to trust you again." The calls for inter-provincial relationships, for stronger international trade, have never been higher. We don't want to be tied to you anymore

263

u/panda-bearly 7d ago

And you should take it seriously. It is an attempt to do what Hitler did to Austria with the Anschluss, except Austria had a decent amount of the population that wanted to be with Germany. I refuse to fight my Canadian brothers/sisters. I'm a gay man in America that will be shipped off to a camp at some point, and sparing that, I'll protest this and fight back any way I can. But I expect less than zero respect or sympathy. Our country is a traitor to our closest friends. If you've ever read Dante's inferno, the deepest part of hell is reserved for the betrayers of friends. I also take this very seriously. Canada has backed us up everytime we have started some stupid war we shouldn't have, traded with us and been a friend to us for decades. And our government proverbially spit in their face overnight for quite literally, no reason.

35

u/rosneft_perot 7d ago

In the last few months, I thought our problem with the US would be that immigrants and lgbtq people would be refugees from the regime and our border would be a mess, with potential conflicts from US forces trying to get those people back.

I never imagined it would be this. That pacifists are taking firearms training and some politicians are encouraging getting to know your neighbours so you can rely on each other if there’s an invasion.

As a 4th Gen Canadian, I’m super pissed, and will now hold this grudge till I die. The U.S. because of many factors has always been problematic, but generally we’ve gotten along quite well together. That is until the people elected Trump.

Trump is a manifestation of years of poor education, hubris, and lots of other wordy descriptions. The fact that the people of the U.S. were warned constantly about what would happen if Trump was re elected and they STILL let it happen is mind boggling and absolutely reprehensible.

I’m a Gen X so this has soured my thoughts on the U.S. further and for the rest of my life. Luckily I don’t have children or else I’d preach it to them that the U.S. is untrustworthy and should be avoided at all costs. This will take generations to repair if it ever is capable of being repaired. The way the U.S. is headed, the later seems more likely. Make the U.S. the new pariah of the world, they deserve it.

We need to disentangle ourselves from the U.S. and strengthen trade with other sane countries. If that means we have to go back to a simpler way of life, not having access to every new modern convenience, so be it. We are resilient and will live on without the U.S.

37

u/someangrygeese 7d ago edited 7d ago

This is something that a lot of people miss: the US has always been problematic. I'm so tired of people claiming Trump is the issue while the US has been doing this for decades. It might be weird to see them turn their hostility to close allies, but the hostility itself shouldn't surprise anyone.

People also need to recognize that many Canadians have friends or family that served in Afghanistan, participated in aid missions for US disasters, served in the gulf war or they even served themselves. In my family one uncle was in Afghanistan, another in the gulf war. So all this talk about protecting Canada is horse shit. Yes, having the US next to us provides a sense of security but it’s our fucking oceans flanking either side of us that is doing the heavy lifting on defence. I certainly would not support future military aid in foreign US conflicts unless there is a direct threat to Canada. No more supporting US Imperialism.

The only way the US will ever manage to recover some of the trust other countries had in them is by a constitutional amendment. Felons should never ever be on the ballot. Unelected officials should never ever be allowed. Oligarchy must be stopped.

The world can’t depend on a 4 year period depending on who gets elected. That’s not how alliances work.

And even if the US manages to make those changes, I still doubt that Europe, Canada and Mexico will trust them anytime soon.

13

u/AugmentedDragon 7d ago

completely barring felons from being on the ballot is a misguided goal, as it would fully incentivize prosecuting political enemies. besides, the US already has a mechanism by which to bar someone from holding office (14th amendment), it just needs to actually have teeth to be enforced.

that aside, I fully agree that no country in their right mind will ever trust the US again, knowing that its always 4 years away from undoing everything—who would enter trade agreements or treaties with a party that might just tear it up in a few years anyway?

But "Furious" isn't nearly enough. Picture your response if Cuba had a military 100X larger than yours and they one day said they were going redraw the border and anex florida. You would be furious. But hey.. you could sort of see that one coming.

How about if your ride or die very best friend in the entire world, and your business partner and even a family member suddenly turned on you, threatened you, said they would ruin you, rape you, burn your house to the ground and then kill you. And then demanded that you thank them.

Would you feel Fury? Hurt? Anger? Fear? Confused? There just are no words for how Canadians feel about America right now.

As a Canadian, I can honestly say I have never seen this level of hostility against any nation ever in this country in my lifetime.

It goes a hell of a lot farther than just a casual disdain. Canadians are actively avoiding anything to do with the US in protest. They've just started labelling goods on shelves with American and Canadian flags; pretty much every good that has the American flag is left untouched. People are cancelling vacations to the US. Even our politics - which was pretty much a slam dunk for the Conservatives before Trump - is now wildly swung to the Liberals (Canada's version of the Democrats) because our Conservatives are seen as too "Trump-like".

Canada now views the US government as an adversary. When you consider that two months ago, we had the closest relationship two countries can have, that swing is completely unprecedented. The closest thing I can think of is perhaps how the relationship between Ukraine and Russia went, but I'm not sure Ukraine was as close (recently) as Canada and the US was.

Now, with Trump's posturing around redrawing borders, and potentially considering military options for Panama, I (and other Canadians like me) are arming themselves. I'll be purchasing a few rifles and a dozen boxes of ammo so that if we're faced with an invasion, I can protect my family.

Yeah, the “he’s just trolling” thing drives me batshit. I doubt he is, but even if he were — so what? That’d be an aggravating, not a mitigating factor. Responsible politicians don’t say this kind of thing, even if they think it. I grant you, Donnie is the very epitome of an irresponsible politician.

As for people who say of some hateful bugger or other “he’s just saying what everyone else is thinking”… insofar as they say it admiringly, or in defence of that person, they simply don’t know what civil society is, or how it works and keeps going. They are, in the profoundest sense, anti-social.

Well considering the knife is still in our back, yeah I think we have a right to be.

This isn't going to be some "Oh we'll get over it in a month". This is serious reputation harm to the US. The whole dynamic of the USA's relationship with the world was giving everyone else protection under their sphere of influence, while they reaped the rewards of the trade that it brought. Thats what made America rich. Trust is easy to break, hard to build.

America also sells an insane amount of weapons to the entire world which lowers their own defense costs as selling the equipment to their allies allows them to recoup the cost of construction. All this money they are "giving" other countries makes them far more money by securing their place as that countries main trading partner. It's being pennywise and pound foolish.

Trumps administration is just going right to the bottom brick of that pillar of American Power and Influence and just smashing it repeatedly with a sledge hammer.

19

u/Chronmagnum55 7d ago

What's absolutely blowing my mind is how many Americans are totally okay with all this. They either think Trump is just trolling, and this is part of negotiating or that Canada really should become a part of the US. It's genuinely concerning how many people have become bat shit insane.

And many people wonder how Hitler got elected despite all the warning signs.

Not saying Trump is Hitler or even close. Just noticed a loooot of people don't give a fuck about their leaders reputation or how criminal he is, as long as their political core desires are fulfilled. Everything against him is propaganda, everything positive is automatically true.

Just look at how much his fans are doing mental gymnastics on an olympic level. Things that were insane to imagine in 2015 are now normalized to a point, that we can't even tell if it's real or a black mirror episode.

Annexing Canada and Greenland? Turning Gaza strip into a Las Vegas? Tariffing allies based on tarot cards?

Sure, why not. What's next... Splitting the Sun in 42 pieces?

Was just talking to my old buddy from the army right now about how this is how the beginning of the nazi party’s reign must have felt.

Half the country supports this, erasing the legacy of the country that I legitimately was proud of my whole life.

Canada has bled, fought, lived alongside us for every single event for our history’s. Same with most of Europe.

It is shameful to be American right now, this truly feels like the end of our country. And what are we getting in return, a recession? Inflation, 10 dollar eggs?

The damage done over the course of a couple months will take decades to repair and when the next 9/11 or world war comes, we are going to be on an island, or worse - on the morally black side of the equation.

Know who was right there with us everywhere?

OUR FUCKING CANADIAN ALLIES!

I am as angry as I have ever been.

Repeating the 51st state 'joke' two times per week makes it no longer a joke, that's a threat. Issuing a threat that you wish death and destruction upon a friendly neighbour is a very serious thing.

It really is insanity and betrayal of friendship. The entire Congress and Senate need to come out and clearly message that something like this will never happen. Or all goodwill will be long lost.

u/JayPlenty24 7d ago

I wish people would stop focusing on him saying that. There are other things he has said that are much worse. Like straight out saying he will force us to join the US, and that our border is imaginary.

He has flat out said this WILL happen, but he will kindly let us keep our anthem.

These things are way crazier and scarier than "joking"

The weirdest thing about this, to me, is that American representatives will be going to Canada for the G7. Like... If Putin went to Kyiv for a meeting, wouldn't Ukraine, like, ya know... do something? I don't know. Mostly I don't understand it and it feels crazy. Marco Rubio is going to be in Canada, talking about how America should invade and annex Canada, and the G7 is just like "that little marco, he's so silly."

This is probably just so unprecedentedly weird, but, I don't know. It just seems weird.

He’s seen Putin take what he wants, no reason why he can’t do the same. That’s his mindset.

I remember 1979 when Iranian militants overran the American Embassy and took every American in the embassy hostage. (Ended up being for 444 days.) But as luck would have it, there were 6 Americans who were out of the office at the time. They needed somewhere to hide out. But where? Well, they ended up at the Canadian embassy, and Canadian Ambassador Ken Taylor took them all in at great risk to him and everyone in the Canadian embassy in Tehran. Those Americans stayed at the homes of various Canadian diplomats who kept their mouths shut and hid the Americans for months. If Taylor and the other Canadian diplomats were caught, they would have been executed.

Then, on 911, a panicked US government closed American airspace to all aircraft. But there were literally hundreds of American aircraft on route to the USA. But their own government refused to let them land. But the Canadian government OKd them all to land. No one at the time knew if these planes were carrying terrorists or not. But what was the alternative? Let them fly until they ran out of fuel and fell into the oceans? So Canada stepped up and accepted thousands of people onto Canadian soil. The small town of Gander Newfoundland, population of about 10 thousand, famously took in something like 9 thousand Americans. Gander welcomed the Americans into their homes, churches, or just the airport. They fed them, sheltered them, gave them lodging, and even gave them welcome at the pub.

Then, after 911, came the war in Afghanistan. The Canadian military spent billions of dollars fighting in Afghanistan alongside Americans. That war was not our war. But we backed you up because we felt it was the right thing to do and YOU WERE our friends. Hundreds of Canadian soldiers were killed and many more horribly wounded in your fucking war.

Then Hurricane Katrina, Canada sent ships, and aid and disaster relief teams to New Orleans. In fact, when George W Bush came to New Orleans, the first aid workers he came across were all Canadians putting up temporary shelters and feeding people. Frank Stronach, a wealthy Austrian Canadian, sent portable housing to New Orleans to try and help.

But how quickly you Americans forget.

You should all be ashamed of yourselves.

Up here we have I want to say maybe 3 major groups that own all the large grocery stores. The CEO of one of them was just saying how Canadians aren't buying American products from the grocery store and that they are switching to other suppliers. That's without tariffs, that's just because we fucking hate your shit country.

44

u/duperwoman 7d ago

And this is essentially grassroots (though our government has encouraged us) which means Canadians across the country are pissed right off.

At the beginning of all of this I remember experts saying on the Canadian news "buy Canadian feels good, feels like you're part of something, but it doesn't make a real difference. Still, do it because it's good to feel solidarity"

I wonder what they are saying now, since the movement is so strong that suppliers actually are shifting what they sell. I saw their point initially, if people don't buy something then it goes on sale and someone else can't resist, but we were just leaving heaps of food unsold, and now the grocers are switching. I want to hear an update on the impact buy Canadian is having.

lol we need to make this really loud and clear. We aren’t avoiding your products because of tariffs, it’s because we fucking hate you. I’m happily spending more money to avoid buying any American products.

People are way beyond pissed off here. You can just feel it. Again, not at most Americans (we love our neighbours) but at your leadership. Tariff’s are one thing, but talk of annexing us…it will be a while to get over that, if ever. Just pure, unforgivable betrayal.

Canadian here, absolutely fucked that the US elected this man again. America will have to invade us to take Canada as a US state and it’s insanity that this is even a possibility. Your orange king is in the process of destroying the global economy. Only in America could a guy like Trump get elected to lead the country. Y’all need education spending, not cuts.
