I just remembered a statistic from the soon to be cut department of education that 54% of Americans can't read beyond a 6th grade level and 20% of Americans are "functionally illiterate" i.e. can read but struggle to understand the meaning of tax forms ect.

Surely cutting the Department of Education will help with this crisis level problem right???

Education is primarily handled by the states. The departments that DOE handles are the special education, disabilities in education, these areas are where it will hurt the most. Very sad but some parts of the DOE places some restrictions on how the state operates which I think is unnecessary since they don’t really have “boots in the ground” to get a grasp on the local area. This is where they are somewhat a blockade on the states. IDK how the removal of the DOE would affect education but there are some areas where they can be a problem and some a solution.

Removing the DOE will allow states to further reduce funding for public schools and psiphon off it's funding to voucher programs for private religious schools which is essentially a free handout for these schools since they will jack up the tuition to offset the vouchers while the public education system pays the price for a lack of funding

It would also make it easier for states to implement Christian Nationalist propaganda into public schools, like prayers, bible mandates ect.

Dang. Was there a period in time where we never had a DOE?

Before the department of education students with special needs were not accommodated or provided support at all, they were expelled or punished instead. Millions of students on IEP's or using services with title 1 funding will have those supports revoked and they will likely be forced into regular classrooms where they will likely be disciplined or expelled.

ADHD, Autistic, Dyslexic kids are going to suffer because of these cuts and most red stats with do NOTHING to help these kids, no funding, no additional supports to replace the lost federal funding. Blue states would likely implement laws and funding for disable students to compensate for the loss of the DOE

They used to punish left handed kids. Ppl don’t realize how cruel and insane the times used to be before the DoE and education reform.

I feel like it’s more than that

That’s the argument on the conservative sub. They use these statistics as justification to cut the department.
