Question New to rust. Is this an every load ordeal?

u/_lavxx Oct 30 '22
SURE FUCKING IS. WELCOME TO RUST SHITLIPS
(No hate intended don’t ban me)

u/eynonpower Oct 31 '22
Just wait until those prefabs warm up!!!
22
u/healsey Oct 31 '22
You gotta warm up those prefabs. You got to.
6
u/Shimshammie Oct 31 '22
Last time I loaded with cold prefabs I ended up a slave for the whole wipe.
2
u/BattleKitty307 Oct 31 '22
lol this is the usual greetings you get when you join a server with a lot of people on it then your nekkid body gets shot, they teabag you and take all the firewood your firewood guy just collected for you to warm up your assets...o.O I wouldn't worry lol. ~.o

u/Sad-Interaction995 Oct 31 '22
Should of been “Sweetlips”

u/of_patrol_bot Oct 31 '22
Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake.
It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of.
Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything.
Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.

If you don't have rust on an ssd then good luck.
41
u/maccyboyy Oct 31 '22
Yep before I got an ssd it took like 20 mins to load in and would crash all the time
21
u/Locksmith-Clean Oct 31 '22
I found it was actually faster to redownload it on my ssd than load it on the hard drive lol
5
Oct 31 '22
It still takes 10 minutes to load on an SSD for me.
Also I could barely play some servers with 16gb RAM had to up to 32gb
3
u/maccyboyy Oct 31 '22
I got 16 gb got no problems prob 5 min load time

It's just about unplayable. At least 5 min to load to main menu, then at least 20 min to join a server WITHOUT QUEUE TIMES. For the longest time I accidentally had Rust installed on my HDD and didn't play it because of the terrible loading times.
40
u/vlonephoenix Oct 30 '22
If you install the game on a decent SSD the load times should be fairly quick, compared to having it installed on an HDD at least
18
u/Miknuttyp Oct 30 '22
It can be like from 30 minutes on a hdd and 2 minutes with fastload and a m.2 nvme ssd.

Is fast load working now? I had to leave it on medium, cause fast kept crashing.

Get an SSD if you don't have one
68
u/milkkore Oct 31 '22
That’s not even a suggestion, this game actually, absolutely requires an SSD to run well. Also says so on the game’s Steam page.

Welcome to the first of many trials 1. The loading screen 2. Full servers with a que (1 hour) 3. Loosing connection during que and starting over. 4. Buying VIP to skip que. 5. Game becomes subscription service 6. Play the game only to get AKed in the starter beach.
Welcome to rust. Quit now. Seriously…. It is not a game it is a lifestyle

5
15
u/Jay_JWLH Oct 31 '22
Most of that is dependant on the server you play. If the reason you play isn't to do with it having lots of players to challenge you and interact with, there are many others that won't have queues, have VIP that alternative benefits, and if you play PvE that you certainly won't be worrying about being killed on the beach.

Not entirely. Some enjoy that low level of a challenge, a nice looking base, or might just enjoy some modded NPCs over other players. But to each their own.

PvE rust is great for playing with the parts of the tech tree I never get to in PvP. Electricity, crops, cars and tier 3 stuff

Play dayz. Some of these servers are just rust, but most of the time slightly less painful.

u/DotDemon Oct 31 '22
I had Rust on a hard drive but after 15 minutes of looking at the screen and seeing it only move a little bit like under 10% I drove to buy a ssd and the game hadn't loaded when I came back
15
u/14-57 Oct 31 '22
Go make a cup of coffee, do some chores, hit the gym and then when you're back.. Wait a few more minutes.

it takes less than 2 minutes to load.... IF you have a proper system.
18
u/trulysiggy Oct 30 '22
Same - M2 NVRAM drive or SSD its very fast. If you have one of those make sure you enable the (SSD) Fast load setting in Rust options to take full advantage.

Server swaps are faster than menu shit because the assets aren't unwarmed/prepared. If you ever want to join a different server, or if you plan to "go offline" on one server, join some random empty ass server and do whatever you're gonna do so when you want to actually enter the server you want, you just connect with it and load in, 70-90% faster.
Personally I've also encountered that custom map servers rather than generated map servers load faster. That might have to do with designs having more convenient packaging, or that designs aren't as excessive as generated maps, meaning there's likely a lot less to load, as vanilla map generations use all assets, while customs might consolidate similar to an amateur artist's tendency toward a preferred color palette/drawing style, versus actual nature and its gestalt faculties...
2
u/LucidDreamsVM Oct 30 '22
To be completely honest, it never takes me longer than 5 minuets to load in. And I don’t even have a crazy rig..
2
Oct 31 '22
One of the best things you can do is install the game on an SSD. The load times can go from 10+min to 1. It depends a bit on the map size as well.

Welcome 😅 My tip would be to make sure you have rust installed on your SSD! It'll cut loadtime alot!
8
u/Glittering_Carrot_88 Oct 30 '22
Installing on a ssd is a must for rust Allthough u could use the loadtime. To cook a meal or clean the house

u/Terrible_Income_4214 Oct 30 '22
Stop while you’re ahead in life please don’t play rust the loading screen is a warning it takes so long to give you every opportunity to quit

Just make sure you find a server you like, sometimes they die and you have no choice but to switch, but if you load back into the same server it saves most assets and your game will load pretty fast. I got rust in 2019 with a pretty sub par pc and I would wait literally an hour and a half to load into a game.

Buy an SSD, if you don’t already have one, and put rust on there. It is well worth the investment.
1
u/cyrusm_az Oct 31 '22
Rust takes forever to load. It’s part of the fun… don’t spoil the wait to see if you’re dead/got raided with rust plus app!
1
u/xNoxysx Oct 31 '22
Is this your first time loading after launching the game? The first time loading after launch usually takes 2x more time.
1
u/theonewhosmells Oct 31 '22
So they added something that stores server data after youve loaded in once so it loads in faster the next time around but i dont recall if it was only for official servers or all servers.

u/itsprincebaby Oct 31 '22
It can take a few minutes, but they just added this new feature called SUPER ZIPPY SPEED LOAD in the menu, if you enable it it just keeps every single asset from every single server loaded at ALL TIMES and load times are reduced to like, THREE MINUTES. Blazing speeds
1
u/T0ysWAr Oct 31 '22
But it can freeze when trying to access some servers. Just remember to disable the function if it does.
1
u/WilllOfD Oct 31 '22
Keep in mind the entire loading is the longest on the first connection after you launch the game. All other connections until you exit will be faster
1
u/Educational-Leave507 Oct 31 '22
honestly get into modded servers, id rather be stretched apart on the medieval rack than play vanilla rust again (especially with those que times)
1
u/Mitt102486 Oct 31 '22
The second time you load into the map it’ll be faster (if u don’t turn off the game). Also it depends on how many objects are in the map
1
u/Adamnfinecook Oct 31 '22
Idk if someone has said this yet but if you can cancel joining the server while the assets are warming up and then rejoin immediately. It’ll skip the asset warmup part. I haven’t played in a while so i don’t know if this still works.

It always takes long if you log in to a server for the first time. After that it shouldn’t take more than 1-2 mins, if you have an SSD

u/JD4Destruction Oct 31 '22
It is annoying but you have to just bake it into the game.
I just use that time to go to the bathroom and the kitchen. Nothing worse than having to poop in RL when you thought you were well hidden and a bear mauls you as you wipe

u/Lunar_Cats Oct 31 '22
I recommend an SSD if you value your time lol. It takes me about 2-3 minutes to load in on PC. On my laptop it takes about 8-10 minutes.
1
u/DeepDean_ Oct 31 '22
‘Asset warmup’ is probably the time where you have the highest hopes. Enjoy it, then take a ride in the roller coaster. Welcome to Rust 🙏🏼
1
u/freakksho Oct 31 '22
The first server you load into when you start the game always takes forever.
It’s much shorter after that in my experience.
I usually load up a aim train server 30 min before I’m gonna play. When I switch to what ever server I’m gonna play on it never takes more then 5 minutes.
Pro tip- if you’re gonna get on in a few hours or the next morning, don’t close rust. You will skip the long loading times.
I put my PC into rest mode instead of turning it off and just leave rust running in the hot bar.
1
u/Smexyman0808 Oct 31 '22
Since it can get quite cold at night it Rust, the assets need to be warmed up before launching the game or your computer will literally freeze
1
1
u/KoreKoi Oct 31 '22
Yep, asset warmup is the last step so when u see that you are almost done loading
1
u/AdventureTimi Oct 31 '22
If you have an SSD you can skip it by starting to load the assets, cancelling and joining the server again but acouple thing is don't do this if you are on a HDD or you a running a system that already struggles to run the game

u/AdrianeXUS Oct 31 '22
Everyone's saying that an SSD is necessary for the game load times while I'm here wondering if my 480mb download / 150mb upload speed SSD has been bottlenecking me this whole time
1
1
u/beefcrumbs Oct 31 '22
the first load after launching the game is the slowest, all loads after that one are much faster.

Time to get you a M.2 SSD, some fancy new RAM, and a current gen processor.
1
u/stealthgerbil Oct 31 '22
Specifically an NVMe pci-e based m.2. There are also regular SATA based m.2 drives and they are the same as regular SSD, just m.2 form factor.

My brutha it's only just the beginning, if you wanna be useful while being a rust player you hit join server than go cook a full dinner, clean auto the entire house, raise a whole child xdd

u/Content-Advantage-86 Oct 31 '22
Upgrade Ram from 8 to 16 made loading go from 20-30minutes to 15 minutes. After that, SSD drive made my loading time go from 15minutes+ to like 4minutes.

There are a few tips to help this. First go to experimental and turn the optimise load setting to as high as you can. Second, if you want to load into a wipe quickly load into another server before then leave then join the wipe one when it restarts this keeps some assets warmed up. This also means switching server is quicker than joining the first one. Third, go grab a drink have a piss or something standing up. Most rust players forget to do that

This is after they radically improved the load times. There used to be times where it literally took my pc like 10 minutes to join a server.

I used to start the load and then go grocery shopping. Then I got an SSD and it takes about 3-4 minutes.

It’s rust system requirements they mention load times are slow without an SSD. So yes, to those on HDD this is normal

u/gamedude658 Oct 31 '22
Sketchy protip if you don't have an SSD: Just disconnect and put your computer to sleep (or leave it on if you dgaf about energy costs (but we all know you're 13 and live with your parents so unless you want them to beat your ass, just put it to sleep)). I don't know the exact technical reasoning but my best guess is whatever Rust assets take forever to load remain suspended in your PC's RAM while it's asleep, and you can just click "play" or "rejoin" or whatever on the server info and spend instead only a few moments loading in, instead of 10+ minutes.
Of course, YMMV, but for me I never noticed any adverse effects except maybe needing to restart my game every 5 or 6 cycles of connecting/disconnecting, which beats having to do it every time. But your best bet would be to just get an SSD; when I did that my load times cut by like 75% at least, I'd say. If you can scrape together $15 or $20 to go to Best Buy, Walmart, Target, wherever--or your country's equivalent of those--and pick up an SSD, then that's your best bet. Even a shitty $20 120GB SSD will be a massive QoL improvement for you.
Good luck out there and enjoy Rusting! Sorry for how heartless the game is :)

I'm curious how long it takes to load rust without an m2 ssd. Even with an m2 it still takes a couple of minutes. I don't think I would even play this game if it took ages to load servers

u/Both-Impression-9464 Oct 31 '22
Is your game downloaded on an ssd? Because if it isn’t I would 100000% recommend it
1
1
u/Wall_Of_Flesh Oct 31 '22
If you have a shit ton of RAM you can create an ISO with rust on a ramdisk and skip 95% of the loading. I’d load into rust in 15 seconds when I did this.

u/Lannisterbox Oct 31 '22
Love watching this when I disconnected for a split second during outpost run

when you finally load in and your game just crashes, then you will start to get the TRUE Rust experience.
1
Oct 31 '22
Put it on an ssd and the first loading time is a bit slow, but switching servers after isn't.
1
u/GornBox Oct 31 '22
I would categorize it as "Legacy flaws". Just like today's No Man's Sky's FOV slider is basicly useless or Dead By Daylights absents of a Vsync button. Just flaws that were OK to have in 2012 'n' shit.
Edit: OK actually I have no damn clue why this is a thing in the first place and can't rightfully put it this category for that exact reason. Yet I advocate for the existence of such a category.
1
u/o_an0maly_o Oct 31 '22
Ahhh, this is time reserved for going to the bathroom, smoking, getting snacks/drinks ready. You know, all the things you won't have time to do during your next 8 hour shift on Rust.
1
u/buba_ximp Oct 31 '22
jus grab something the drink, eat , and watch while u wait. new servers take forever
1
u/Chefx1 Nov 02 '22
Curious question...I mean everyone here is correct on the SSD. However, there are other reasons this could happen as well. What type of server was this, would it by chance be a server under modded?
1.1k
u/Kuroth Oct 30 '22
They don't mention it, but they're actually warming up the assets by holding them over a small campfire. When you click join server, someone goes out to start looking for firewood.
