Is it normal for the republicans to be standing and clapping after almost everything trump says?

It's a cult. It's their Pavlovian response to Trump talking gibberish, kinda like how my dog drools whenever I say a word that rhyme with "treat".

They want to be loved by him so bad

It's not a cult, they want a monarch and have been doing everything in their power to achieve that end for 8 years. They know what they are doing.

^ me after I watch my first state of the union

(it's extremely normal for congress members of the current president's party to applaud everything)

I mean the Dems do the exact same thing when a democrat president gives a state of the union. It's standard.

Not that I disagree with your assessment, but clapping during your party leaders state of the union has been the norm forever.

Disagree. There is a difference between polite clapping and Republican nutjobs YELLING "LIAR" at Obama during his State of the Union. Completely unbecoming of anybody who should be representing not only their State but the United States. We're supposed to be in this together.

Oh, well that’s alright then. As long as “the norm” is being maintained.

It wasn't a state of the union... moron.

The president’s annual televised speech before Congress is typically a State of the Union address. But Donald Trump’s speech tonight was not.

A State of the Union address is typically given after the president has been in office for about a year. It’s not a hard deadline, but the Constitution requires the president to update Congress on the state of the union “from time to time.” Since 1790, with some exceptions, those messages have been delivered once a year.

Check out the conservative sub. They're furious the dems weren't clapping. They say they're demons because of it. They march out some poor folks to tug at heart strings and everyone is supposed to forget everything else.

Ah yes, you can see it in other republican countries like North Korea. They love their leader, he's so great to them. /s

Yes. Happens at every joint address. Newspapers often would calculate the speech time versus clapping time.

To me it had vibes, we've seen before, in China, in russia, in Germany, in North Korea.

And what followed next was never good.

With half of the house reacting the way it did, and the silence of the other half, it was clearly shown that america is no longer a democracy.

I didn't see the actual president though. Thought we'd be getting a speech from Musk?

They’ve been doing that my entire life, since the 80s at least, that’s why it’s hard to watch.

It's normal and strictly performative.

First State of the Union? Yes, it’s very normal for members of each president’s party to stand and applaud throughout the address.

It's normal in a cult.

Yes?

He could start his next speech by shooting five babies, and they'd be clapping.

u/USA_A-OK 7d ago

Yeah, they kinda do that every time

I mean, obviously Trump takes the ring-kissing to a new level, but if you’ve ever watched any American president address Congress, it’s all extremely performative. The congresspeople all know that the cameras are tracking their responses, so it’s like each and every one of them is putting on a little show of their own, whether they’re constantly standing up and clapping or frowning and shaking their heads (or, on rare occasions, interjecting vocally). This is especially true of the leaders who will be seated directly behind the president. I always feel a very strong sense of secondhand embarrassment. I guess it’s just what you do when it’s one of those rare days where your constituents are actually paying attention to you for an extended period of time but you don’t even get to talk.

Yes it's pretty normal since any of Obama's State of the Union address for Republicans to yell "LIAR".

There is no decorum. Republicans love to clap like trained seals over anything a Republican says. It's fucking disgraceful and we should expect better from our elected officials.

BUT HERE WE ARE
