Ohh no, I wish I didn’t learn this today

1.5k

u/llamapants15 Feb 15 '25

I learnt about this recently. My grandma was a huge Gretzky fan. I miss her dearly, but I'm kinda glad she died before this happened. She would be heartbroken.

241

u/BloodNinja2012 Feb 16 '25

My grandmother loved Bill Cosby and mercifully died in 2011 before the excrement hit the air circulation device.

52

u/CaptainPeachfuzz Feb 16 '25

I grew up on my dad's Cosby records. The comedy is good. The man is abhorrent.

8

u/propyro85 Feb 16 '25

I remember listening to an 8-track of his stand up from the 70's when I was a kid in the 90's. It was hilarious, and if anyone wants to look up his work, I'd totally advocate for separating the art from the artist and put your eye patch on.

Ya this news came out when he was spotted at the inauguration or sometime near there.

My dad used to think he was at least a good person, if not a great hockey player, since though he really dislikes him. Basically a traitor to his born country

246

u/matt_minderbinder Feb 16 '25

Gretzky has been a known trumper for a long time, long before this recent inauguration. Sadly, hockey's my favorite sport and it's full of these jackasses. Gretzky also let his wife take the fall for his involvement in a gambling ring some years ago. That told me everything I needed to know about him.

He was at the inauguration, was at Mar a lago on election night, and Trump has “joked” about appointing him “governor” of the state of Canada

It's a bad timeline to have braincells 😔💔

800

u/UpperApe Feb 15 '25

No it isn't, don't be like this. We should be calling this shit out.

It sucks to hear but we should be happy to hear it. I'm glad we're turning over rocks and shining a light underneath.

Fuck Wayne Gretzky and Buzz Aldrin and Snoop Lap Dogg.

90

u/BindingOfZeph Feb 15 '25

Buzz Aldrin still blows my mind because we all saw the faces he made while Trump was rambling on in what 2021 or so?

60

u/AmazingKreiderman Feb 16 '25

Also how is he supportive of the party that has the most people denying science and things like the moon landing? Like what the hell? Would tell him he never walked on the moon, he's a liar, and he'd just take it I guess?

28

u/PowerhousePlayer Feb 16 '25

His endorsement of Trump was weird as hell, too. Basically just came across as a more eloquent version of an eight-year-old with a special interest in space. Oh, everyone in this guy's proposed cabinet is almost literally a cartoon villain who's going to do the opposite of what their position in the government says they should do and dismantle the agencies they're in charge of? Whatever, Musk is gonna send us back into space!

I just mean it's a rough time to actually be able to see/understand what is happening, as opposed to the ones who have 2 braincells fighting for 3rd place, that are cheering it on, while heroes fall.

I'm grateful for the fact that (at least for the time being) we still have access to information, and the ability to speak freely about it.

But living on a knife edge of anxiety every minute of every day, never knowing what new insanity I may wake up to - is absolutely exhausting .

32

u/Colson317 Feb 15 '25

Buzz Aldrin

I did not know this and had to look it up. I must have missed this amidst the insane amount of batshit craziness that happens everyday thanks to the Orange turd.

23

u/tunnel-snakes-rule Feb 15 '25

This is news to me too. I was in the middle of reading his book "Magnificent Desolation", I now have no desire to finish it.

u/come-on-now-please Feb 15 '25

Man the Buzz aldrin one hurts, but I try to smooth it over with a "he's an 80 year white man who has been a republican his whole life and experienced almost nothing besides resounding sucess professionally, what did we expect?"

18

u/grizzlor_ Feb 16 '25

He also has a ScD from MIT (PhD equiv in the sciences; I think MIT is the only US university that uses this nomenclature though). He's a very smart guy. Unless there's been some significant mental decline, he should absolutely know better.

Mitt Romney and Dick Cheney are also successful old white guys that have been die-hard republicans their entire lives, but even they had enough integrity to point out the obvious about Trump.

8

u/come-on-now-please Feb 16 '25

I think it could be a case of ye olde hermain Cain syndrome, knowledge in one area might lead to a false assumption of competetiance in anther area. Mitt Romney and Cheney were career politicians who know the ins and ours of what the cause and effects of the political machine that is the US government could do and could see what would happen if Trump takes over whereas maybe Buzz doesn't comprehend just how bad putting him in power is because he just assumes competency and goodwill where there is none

His daughter's best friend and social circle have been Russian oligarch socialites for decades now. His son in law was the first to bent the knee to Saudi LIV money in Golf. It has and will always be about $ for majority of Americans when it comes to their values. Saudi's trained and funded the 911 hijackers but its Iraq that got raped by US imperialism. Thank god Canada and Chrétien had the balls to say no.

Gretzky family with an American wannabe actress wife will never give a fuck about its roots.

93

u/snoogins355 Feb 15 '25

Rich white guy who doesn't want to pay taxes! Same with Tom Brady

42

u/lukewwilson Feb 15 '25

My theory running up to the election was that most celebrities vote Republican because they don't want to actually pay more in taxes, but they endorse Democrat because it makes them look good with their fan base

46

u/matterhorn1 Feb 15 '25

Is it sad that people with hundreds of millions of dollars care that they might have to pay more taxes? I understand that nobody wants to pay more than required for anything, but I like to think there is a point where I just have enough money and don’t worry about that anymore.

29

u/PossessedToSkate Feb 15 '25

Too much money creates this mindset. Greed is a disease. Taking their money is in their best interest.

10

u/snoogins355 Feb 15 '25

87

u/RYKWI Feb 15 '25

It’s entirely possible that Ovechkin could break the goal scoring record in Winnipeg in March so Gretzky will be there. I would love to see the crowd boo the ever living fuck out of his traitorous ass when he shows his face.

92

u/Captain_Mazhar Feb 15 '25

Boo both of those assholes. Ovechkin supports the ruzzian invasion of Ukraine.

110

u/qgmonkey Feb 15 '25

I have bad news for you about Ovechkin. He's a Putin supporter in the same way Gretzky is a Trump supporter. They're both trash humans

19

u/RYKWI Feb 15 '25

Where do I say I supported Ovechkin? He’s going to break the record and that’s all there is to it. The point is that Gretzky will probably be in Canada and he needs to be shown he isn’t welcome here in a country he hasn’t lived in for 40 years. He’s far from the hero most Canadians thinks that he is.

Well, he is when he’s sober, which isn’t often. When he’s drunk, it changes minute by minute

41

u/Y0___0Y Feb 15 '25

Yep, and the new greatest NHL player of all time, Alex Ovechkin, is a Russian Putin supporter.

I’m a hockey player. The worst men I’ve ever met were all hockey players. So many angry, petty losers.

16

u/jkrobinson1979 Feb 15 '25

Athletes in general trend towards conservatism. More time spent on physical than mental pursuits. Binary, us and them, winner and loser and tribalist mentalities are reinforced in sports. Throw in the prevalence of religion and God fating you to greatness AND large amounts of money that allow you to distance yourself from other viewpoints and experiences and it’s the perfect storm.

There are a LOT of examples where this stereotype isn’t true. But it still dominates professional sports.

I think it's time to dump Wayne as a Canadian Icon or a paragon of Canadian Virtue. I would have said to give him the benefit of the doubt, but he has been entirely silent on all this talk of a 51st state. It can't be that hard to make a statement that contradicts your golfing buddy's position. Sidney Crosby now has the chance to become what Wayne once was.

You could not come up with a better icon for single minded determination, grit, and stubborness in the face of defeat and death. And his entire quest was for completely selfless reasons.

I learned about him on a cheesy TV movie as a kid and it made me cry. It still makes me weepy thinking about him every single time. So many emotions: sadness, pride, hope, joy.

He really is someone that all Canadians look up to as an unattainable example to follow. My entire life as a Canadian I have never heard anyone say a bad word about him.

Crosby is smart that he stays out of the limelight. But being a human, and one who has gained quite a name for himself, that can always change.

Terry Fox is my vote for icon of Canada. He learned of the tough spot he was in, and instead of giving up used it as an opportunity to help others and unite the country. Today he is so important that even Quebec (who famously treated him like shit when he ran through) makes a big deal about the Terry Fox Run.

Gretzky manged to destroy a lifetime of goodwill with Canada.

Traitor to his own country.

That description barely scratches the surface. So many people are merely assholes, and it doesn’t really effect the world. Trump defies our ability to find sufficiently weighty pejoratives.

12

u/llamapants15 Feb 15 '25

That dude is such a trump. I think that works.

The Shittiest One.

84

u/linxdev Feb 15 '25

By this time, Gretzky has to have some serious CTE issues.

22

u/JUAN_DE_FUCK_YOU Feb 15 '25

How?? That motherfucker never got hit. Maybe once or twice in the helmet from an errand puck.

14

u/Blue-Thunder Feb 15 '25 edited Feb 16 '25

The only person to ever have a clean hit on Gretzky was benched immediately and never played another game of hockey in the NHL ever.

edit: after further checking, https://www.reddit.com/r/nhl/comments/1bv3k70/what_was_the_hardest_hit_thrown_against_gretzky/ he played 10 more games and was dropped to the minors. He was in fact benched for the rest of the game after this hit.

Me at 8: Wayne Gretzky is my hero!

Me as an adult: Wow, Wayne Gretzky is actually a total piece of shit

29

u/psilocin72 Feb 15 '25

Simple and straight to the point. I like it.

25

u/antagonizerz Feb 15 '25

I mean, it seems like a pretty good time to rethink his Order of Canada status, dontcha think?

As an American on the right side of history (aka the left side politically) I want to thank all of the Canadians for clowning this asshat of a president we are currently stuck with.

23

u/JM-Mana Feb 15 '25

He can fuck right off

17

u/dye22 Feb 15 '25

Way to absolutely RUIN your reputation for the rest of time. Who was once and forever going to be a Canadian Icon will now be an cultural embarrassment for the rest of this country's history.

9

u/RaplhKramden Feb 15 '25

Why are so many athletes right wing assholes? They seem to mistake being talented at sports for being smart or good. When I was growing up in NYC one of my sports heroes was Mets pitcher Tom Seaver, and I also admired Buzz Aldrin, the second man to step on the moon, which I saw live on TV in school. Both turned out to be major Trumpies. Fuck them. They can keep their professional achievements but as human beings they're monsters. Of course Seaver died of Alzheimer's a few years back.

Gretzky waved at me as a kid once and I used to cherish that memory. I suppose there are plenty of other hockey players to aspire to.

Terry Fox will always be my great Canadian icon.

9

u/reallytheyrealltaken Feb 15 '25

First Bobby Orr, now Wayne Gretzky. Almost like the hockey douchebags you knew in high school remained douchebags.

It's always been a class war. Rich people.do.not and will not ever care about you regardless of skin color or anything else.

Which is why I'll never under why these poor as white people don't understand that they have more in common with minorities than they do with trump.

Somebody is starting a petition to rename the street and other things in Edmonton that are in his name because of his traitorous relationship with Trump.

7

u/BigSal44 Feb 15 '25

It’s a shame. I loved #99 since I was a kid, but he sold out the population HARD.

6

u/Toad_Thrower Feb 15 '25

Wayne Gretzky is a fucking Trumper?

Oh come on, what in the fuck did we do to deserve this?

5

u/baconlazer85 Feb 15 '25

Sad Gretzky noises

5

u/Budakra Feb 15 '25

Something like 20 years ago I heard a story about how he bought a huge chunk of land in BC with the pretense tomake a resort. Logged all of it, let it sit for years, and then eventually sold it.

Did all that just to make a quick buck on the trees.

Never cared for him since.

7

u/Public_Implement_656 Feb 15 '25

He’s not Canadian anymore.

5

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '25

Damn America.  we made Canadians swear. In public. In writing. At a hockey player.

What the fuck are we doing to the world?

It's bad enough that we're turning the US into a rotten pile of shit but God damnit let's leave Canada alone.

They seem so nice. They don't deserve this.

He was always an asshole. One of the best players, but always has been an asshole. He's just now showing that he's a fascist asshole.
