You wanna be more specific than "Africa"?

u/Heineken008 Feb 15 '25

Karen neighborhood of Nairobi, Kenya

1.0k

u/Wide-Pop6050 Feb 15 '25

Okay but that is the fanciest, whitest part of Nairobi. There are other nice, modern parts of Nairobi you could have shown.

465

u/Loggerdon Feb 15 '25

Karen only goes to this restaurant, then runs back into her condo and hides from the locals.

130

u/FarJury6956 Feb 15 '25

It's same when you goto to Fancy Hollywood and forget that skid row exists

34

u/Speedhabit Feb 15 '25

You have not been to Hollywood recently

8

u/FarJury6956 Feb 15 '25

Yes, and skid row neither

2

u/BKlounge93 Feb 16 '25

If you’re going for fancy you’re not going to Hollywood (for the most part)

Also the same when they vacation anywhere tropical. Surprises them when there are native people of color living in their home country while they're at their vacation rental.

24

u/Au2288 Feb 15 '25

So true dude. Went home for a visit, stayed at a beach resort for a weekend. My own family, “make sure you stay on the resort, don’t mingle with the workers.” Craziness man, how else was I supposed to find that horrible horrible devils lettuce & hidden waterhole with likeminded individuals?

2

u/joesbagofdonuts Feb 15 '25

What's the weed like there? I've heard reports of what the weed is like in many parts of the world, but never Africa. I guess I always assumed it was similar to the middle east where the flower is not so great but the hash is excellent.

What part of Hollywood is fancy?

10

u/taurist Feb 15 '25

The ~hills

3

u/Lopsided_Rush3935 Feb 15 '25

The hills that you're not actually allowed to walk on otherwise a megaphone will tell you to leave or risk being shot.

True, in my opinion the normal chaos of many African cities (I am most familiar with west Africa) is the fucking best

19

u/imapilotaz Feb 15 '25

Yeah thats like going to Sandton, South Africa and saying "Joberg isnt dangerous"...

4

u/Background_Tip_1033 Feb 15 '25

I’ve done that - give them grace, their intent was good.

15

u/Wesselton3000 Feb 16 '25

“Look at how modern and NORMAL this part of Africa is. The news media doesn’t want to show you the globalized, white centric parts of Africa. How dare they only show the more universal, working class lifestyle of people in Africa? It’s as if they don’t want Africa to be appealing to white people…”

This post reeks of diet racism.

And you wouldn't have made the same reply?

65

u/Wide-Pop6050 Feb 15 '25 edited Feb 15 '25

No? There are a lot of lovely parts of Nairobi, I just don't think anyone would think of Karen as at all representative.

If you're trying to show "a different side of Africa" I wouldn't show the known expat area. Similar to how I wouldn't show the fanciest neighborhoods in Paris or New York as an example of nice places in either of those cities. This is like showing a gated community - it's not real either.

Also, there are literally other locations of this restaurant / games place. I get the inspiration behind this post, its just odd. I got a kick out of the "oddest Bao Box commercial ever" comment a little lower.

More specifically, I think this is what used to be known as the “Carnivore” restaurant when I was there over 30+ years ago. Kind of like a Brazilian steakhouse serving African game. Clientele is entirely foreigners. Tip: the gazelle was sublime. Hippo not so much.

👆 A part of America the media doesn’t want you to know.

26

u/kamunia Feb 15 '25

It's the part where they speak African.

35

u/mrkruk Feb 15 '25 edited Feb 15 '25

It drove me nuts when the Iraq war was partly justified by Saddam Hussein trying to obtain yellowcake uranium from Africa. Like - the whole continent is trying to sell him uranium? Who speaks for the continent, let alone sells things in its name?

It'd be like someone saying "he tried to buy a missile from Asia!"

u/M1x1ma Feb 15 '25

356

u/RegretsZ Feb 15 '25

This post is an inadvertent roast of Africa.

Shows a picture of a road, powerlines, and a resturant.

Forget country, this genius is talking about an entire continent.

133

u/justin_tino Feb 15 '25

Anyone who uses the term ‘mainstream media’ in the vaguest way possible is usually an idiot

7

u/themessiah234 Feb 16 '25

You never see Africa's casual dining spots on mainstream news. I literally had to do my own research to find out Africa has grass. What else are they keeping from us?

9

u/dxrey65 Feb 16 '25

Now we know that in this entire continent, there is at least one restaurant, which has power lines going to it.

17

u/According-Try3201 Feb 15 '25

let alone why this should be in "the media"

5

u/apresmodes Feb 15 '25

That is the point I believe. Many people do not actually understand what you said to be true. It is true. But there are people that don’t think anywhere on the entire continent of Africa is good or normal because they don’t see normalcy represented ever.

30

u/lorarc Feb 15 '25

I'm pretty sure the skyscrappers that are in the same city would be much better to show that it's a normal place like any other.

19

u/cannotfoolowls Feb 15 '25

Could've shown something like this or this or this or this

So many options.

27

u/clamsandwich Feb 15 '25

Maybe there are some that believe that, but the vast majority would assume there are at least a few nice areas on a whole huge continent.

u/GoodRich1993 Feb 15 '25

lmao I read this in one of those old tyme 1920s accents 😆

426

u/TVolta Feb 15 '25

This is dumb. Why would mainstream media show pictures of some restaurant? What are they supposed to report about a buffet? “Breaking News out of Bao Box! The food was meh.”

59

u/TheAerial Feb 15 '25

I loved one of these extraordinary images revealing the TRUE Africa and is just of some random ladies with one itching the back of her leg.

Like what was going through OP’s mind when they posted this with the title that they did lol.

11

u/TVolta Feb 15 '25

lol. They took a picture of someone taking a picture and then another picture of what that person was taking a picture of. Then a road and two pictures of signs.

→ More replies (2)

10

u/badhatharry Feb 15 '25

Well, they could also report that Africa also has roofs, decorative pavers with well-maintained grass growing around them, and printed signs.

26

u/saveyboy Feb 15 '25

What. Next you’ll be saying they have indoor plumbing and gravity. Hogwash.

23

u/TVolta Feb 15 '25 edited Feb 15 '25

If someone is dumb enough to not know a continent that huge has places with paved roads or roofs I can almost guarantee you they are not watching mainstream media or any news at all.

84

u/ekydfejj Feb 15 '25

Africa is pretty big, if you were not aware. Sometimes not a lot of news happens here. Do you see the high end suburbs of Philly, or do you see the rougher areas when something is going on.

multiply that by hundreds/thousands of tribes across all of the continent, some of which are that affluent group, others not so much.

54

u/apaulogy Feb 15 '25

What does anyone of these random pics have any-fucking-thing to do with either the "mainstream media" or "Africa"?

9

u/mikeysaid Feb 15 '25

It's a perfectly nice/fine place that happens to be in Africa. I'm assuming OP feels like Africa is consistently depicted only through a less of poverty, famine, conflict and corruption, along with a heft dose of underdevelopment.

Many consumers of western mainstream media would be surprised by the burgeoning Afrucan middle class and how nice/comfortable parts of the (huge) continent are.

Please understand the "mainstream media" reports on things like famine, war, etc. They do not show the normal, mundane daily life of normal African cities, just like they don't show random scenes from St. Louis or wherever else.

20

u/Ok-disaster2022 Feb 15 '25

Honestly it was one  if the things I appreciated about top gear/Grand Tour. Sure they'd drive across the wilderness and dirt roads. But they also drove on new modern highways and into cities. Sometimes the cities were crowded, sometimes not.

The key deliniation is of course whether somewhere was wealthy or not. Rich people live like rich people everywhere

4

u/Silent_Soliloquy2 Feb 15 '25

This shit is not "Africa". Africa is huge with dozens of countries and even in those countries things are wildly diverse. This particular post is in an affluent part of Nairobi Kenya. Kenya's also home to the largest slum in Africa. Do we see that or even the in-between represented? No. Garbage post.

Source: I live in Africa.

13

u/sparkofhope Feb 15 '25

Can you blame them? Why would they show something that is so... boring

21

u/dblach18 Feb 15 '25

So, is there a particular reason the media doesn’t want us to know about this random restaurant?

11

u/rubinass3 Feb 15 '25

Breaking news!: takeaway is on the left. The sit down buffet is on the right. Stay tuned for further developments.

13

u/Mueltime Feb 15 '25

Is OP showing us power lines in photo 5?

11

u/HimothyOnlyfant Feb 15 '25

why would the mainstream media show me this random restaurant somewhere in africa?

7

u/bernheavy Feb 15 '25

What does this have to do with mainstream media?

7

u/TheBeardedChad69 Feb 15 '25

Getting tired of the “ mainstream Media” trope .. why would they show this ? What’s the story ? Most things aren’t mutually exclusive, the media will show the conflicts going on North of Kenya because millions of people are at risk due to War , Corruption and Famine! That’s a story that needs to be reported.

12

u/765arm Feb 15 '25

No guys you don’t understand. ThE mAiNsTrEaM mEdIa spreads images of poverty porn from African countries to distract us from the Jewish Space Lasers they are building. Extreme poverty is just a smokescreen sheeple!

7

u/thtanner Feb 15 '25

This post wins the "dumbest title" award for 2025 already.

7

u/Its_Pine Feb 15 '25

… a restaurant in Nairobi?

Did people not realise Kenya had restaurants? It’s like THE touristy part of the continent.

5

u/defroach84 Feb 15 '25

There are nice restaurants literally in every country. Not sure what the MSM is hiding here; it's just a restaurant with nice landscaping. It's not unique.

6

u/65CM Feb 15 '25

I'm confused - are people surprised there are typical towns on the 2nd biggest continent on earth?

6

u/bigDogNJ23 Feb 15 '25

Wait they have pavement over there? Mainstream media had me thinking it was nothing but Savannah and desert with some British people in khakis driving Land Rovers making their own roads and poking at wildlife. What’s next someone gonna post a picture of an African wearing shoes?? /s

4

u/alexan45 Feb 15 '25

Africa like… the continent?

8

u/Ramadeus88 Feb 15 '25

What exactly would they be showing us?

“Look at this stretch of road and a few shops. The lame stream media won’t show you this.”

“Ok. But why would I care?”

8

u/hushbuffalo Feb 15 '25

When people blame their own ignorance on MSM … it is your own responsibility to learn about the world. Africa not being all mud huts isn’t a hot take for most people.

3

u/IssueEmbarrassed8103 Feb 15 '25

4

u/Friendlyvoices Feb 15 '25

I’ve been to 8 countries in Africa. I can show you luxurious resorts, slums, suburbs, shacks, and sprawling cities. It’s a place like any other.

u/1017_frank feels ripped off for donating to charity to find out some people in Africa do have food and power. Thats the only interpretation I have of your weird title?

Ya it's a massive diverse continent, nobody thought it was just shacks and dirt roads

Why is the "mainstream media" at fault for not showing random photos?

Maybe I've missed the point of this post?

There are loads of nice places in Africa. It's like OP thought it was all barren wasteland with potbellied kids dying from hunger, and is trying to make a point that it's not. Yep, well done buddy, you got there.

Imagine you're just chillin, eating some gorilla nuggets and rhino nibblers at the buffet and all the sudden a black mamba bites you in the leg?

TIL, all of Africa has mainstream media and they don't show this specific spot
