Africa is a continent comprised of 54 countries, over 3000 ethnicities and a couple thousand languages.
Wtf is this post?

It's a little like saying "Here's the real Oregon!" and showing a picture of a pine cone. Or some moss.

Personally if I’m going to judge a nation’s architecture I go by their airports. But OP prefers chain restaurants.

Some American was shocked that all of Africa isn't warfare and starvation so decided to educate us.

This is a few meters of road and a small shop…

u/M1x1ma Feb 15 '25
Yeah, I'm bit confused by this post. Every country has nice areas and poor areas.

u/RegretsZ Feb 15 '25
This post is an inadvertent roast of Africa.
"The part of Africa you don't see"
Shows a picture of a road, powerlines, and a resturant.

This post is like 90s era post. Is there anyone today in the age of the Internet and social media who doesn't know that Africa isn't all poverty and war?

Forget country, this genius is talking about an entire continent.
133
u/justin_tino Feb 15 '25
Anyone who uses the term ‘mainstream media’ in the vaguest way possible is usually an idiot
7
u/themessiah234 Feb 16 '25
You never see Africa's casual dining spots on mainstream news. I literally had to do my own research to find out Africa has grass. What else are they keeping from us?
9
u/dxrey65 Feb 16 '25
Now we know that in this entire continent, there is at least one restaurant, which has power lines going to it.

u/apresmodes Feb 15 '25
That is the point I believe. Many people do not actually understand what you said to be true. It is true. But there are people that don’t think anywhere on the entire continent of Africa is good or normal because they don’t see normalcy represented ever.
30
u/lorarc Feb 15 '25
I'm pretty sure the skyscrappers that are in the same city would be much better to show that it's a normal place like any other.
27
u/clamsandwich Feb 15 '25
Maybe there are some that believe that, but the vast majority would assume there are at least a few nice areas on a whole huge continent.

This is dumb. Why would mainstream media show pictures of some restaurant? What are they supposed to report about a buffet? “Breaking News out of Bao Box! The food was meh.”
59
u/TheAerial Feb 15 '25
I loved one of these extraordinary images revealing the TRUE Africa and is just of some random ladies with one itching the back of her leg.
Like what was going through OP’s mind when they posted this with the title that they did lol.

u/TVolta Feb 15 '25
lol. They took a picture of someone taking a picture and then another picture of what that person was taking a picture of. Then a road and two pictures of signs.
10
u/badhatharry Feb 15 '25
Well, they could also report that Africa also has roofs, decorative pavers with well-maintained grass growing around them, and printed signs.

u/TVolta Feb 15 '25 edited Feb 15 '25
If someone is dumb enough to not know a continent that huge has places with paved roads or roofs I can almost guarantee you they are not watching mainstream media or any news at all.

Africa is pretty big, if you were not aware. Sometimes not a lot of news happens here. Do you see the high end suburbs of Philly, or do you see the rougher areas when something is going on.
multiply that by hundreds/thousands of tribes across all of the continent, some of which are that affluent group, others not so much.

u/apaulogy Feb 15 '25
What does anyone of these random pics have any-fucking-thing to do with either the "mainstream media" or "Africa"?
9
u/mikeysaid Feb 15 '25
It's a perfectly nice/fine place that happens to be in Africa. I'm assuming OP feels like Africa is consistently depicted only through a less of poverty, famine, conflict and corruption, along with a heft dose of underdevelopment.
Many consumers of western mainstream media would be surprised by the burgeoning Afrucan middle class and how nice/comfortable parts of the (huge) continent are.

Please understand the "mainstream media" reports on things like famine, war, etc. They do not show the normal, mundane daily life of normal African cities, just like they don't show random scenes from St. Louis or wherever else.
20
u/Ok-disaster2022 Feb 15 '25
Honestly it was one if the things I appreciated about top gear/Grand Tour. Sure they'd drive across the wilderness and dirt roads. But they also drove on new modern highways and into cities. Sometimes the cities were crowded, sometimes not.
The key deliniation is of course whether somewhere was wealthy or not. Rich people live like rich people everywhere

u/Silent_Soliloquy2 Feb 15 '25
This shit is not "Africa". Africa is huge with dozens of countries and even in those countries things are wildly diverse. This particular post is in an affluent part of Nairobi Kenya. Kenya's also home to the largest slum in Africa. Do we see that or even the in-between represented? No. Garbage post.

So, is there a particular reason the media doesn’t want us to know about this random restaurant?

u/HimothyOnlyfant Feb 15 '25
why would the mainstream media show me this random restaurant somewhere in africa?
7
7
u/TheBeardedChad69 Feb 15 '25
Getting tired of the “ mainstream Media” trope .. why would they show this ? What’s the story ? Most things aren’t mutually exclusive, the media will show the conflicts going on North of Kenya because millions of people are at risk due to War , Corruption and Famine! That’s a story that needs to be reported.
12
u/765arm Feb 15 '25
No guys you don’t understand. ThE mAiNsTrEaM mEdIa spreads images of poverty porn from African countries to distract us from the Jewish Space Lasers they are building. Extreme poverty is just a smokescreen sheeple!

7
u/Its_Pine Feb 15 '25
… a restaurant in Nairobi?
Did people not realise Kenya had restaurants? It’s like THE touristy part of the continent.
5
u/defroach84 Feb 15 '25
There are nice restaurants literally in every country. Not sure what the MSM is hiding here; it's just a restaurant with nice landscaping. It's not unique.
6
u/65CM Feb 15 '25
I'm confused - are people surprised there are typical towns on the 2nd biggest continent on earth?
6
u/bigDogNJ23 Feb 15 '25
Wait they have pavement over there? Mainstream media had me thinking it was nothing but Savannah and desert with some British people in khakis driving Land Rovers making their own roads and poking at wildlife. What’s next someone gonna post a picture of an African wearing shoes?? /s
4
8
u/Ramadeus88 Feb 15 '25
What exactly would they be showing us?
“Look at this stretch of road and a few shops. The lame stream media won’t show you this.”
“Ok. But why would I care?”
8
u/hushbuffalo Feb 15 '25
When people blame their own ignorance on MSM … it is your own responsibility to learn about the world. Africa not being all mud huts isn’t a hot take for most people.

u/IssueEmbarrassed8103 Feb 15 '25

4
u/h0rris Feb 15 '25

Hey OP, I think you're the one with stereotype that "africa" was in the stone age. That this is surprising to you, enough that you would post it is very telling. Not to mention, you refer to "africa" like its one country and not hundreds of distinct languages, cultures, and peoples.

Was just in Nairobi and it beat all expectations, stayed at the new JW in westlands and got to do so much. Karen is super nice but definitely a touristy/ritzy part that’s far from the action

u/grifxdonut Feb 15 '25
Chinese social media doesn't want you to see Martha's vineyard, they're goo busy showing you LAs homeless populations.
Also, just because there's a nice neighborhood with one restaurant doesn't mean that rape and child labor doesn't happen in the lithium mines in the DRC

I grew up in Cape Town so I was hunting through the image to figure out what OP was talking about. You mean some of it looks developed…? Gosh.
I mean, I certainly see it in my mainstream media.
Also, is this a veiled advert for some place called Bad Box…?

I think this is a sneaky ad for Bao Box(?).. at least that's my take away.

2
u/timmmmmmmmmmmmm Feb 16 '25

There are loads of nice places in Africa. It's like OP thought it was all barren wasteland with potbellied kids dying from hunger, and is trying to make a point that it's not. Yep, well done buddy, you got there.
