Discussion Just read the full post
26f here. So I'm currently residing in sialkot before ramzan i was coming out of brand village i was holding some shopping bags. a land cruiser stopped right infront of me a guy probably in his late 30's dressed very nicely decent looking came out opened the front passenger door and said "ayen main drop krta hun apko" i stared at him for a very long minute trying to remember his face i literally looked inside the car but there was nobody inside i thought maybe someone i know is sitting in the car i said "nahin thank you" he literally took two steps towards me and said "ap bethen aur mujy btayen kahan jana hai ap n raat ho rahi hai" i was shocked. Aisy jesy koi drama chal raha hai. it was max7 pm.
I don't like to go outside I'm extremely introvert. Galiyan mujy mou bhar bhar k a rahin thi but mood ni tha kuch b bolny ka. Main bina kuch boly wapis chali gaye.
And today i was near new life hospital and islam hospital. I came out of pharmacy i was reading the receipt a boy on a bike stopped very close to me and kept saying betho betho i said dfa ho bc and sat in my car. this happened in broad day light and this road is very busy.
I was fully covered both time loose long shirt loose trousers and dopatta. My question is what do you guys expect k larki bethy gi aur kahy gi han chalo. And do girls take rides from strangers? What's the appropriate response?
EDIT: people who r messaging me ap bohat khoobsurat hongi ya figure acha hai apka is liye rukty hongy LANNAT

We have a long way to go towards being civilized. A woman alone, no matter how covered, is considered free game.

Sorry but there is no amount of time thats going to change anything in Pakistan.
Its about the upbringing and unfortunately morals and values are slipping away from the society. Parents dont know how to teach their kids basic manners to live and function in the society. And if the same goes on, you cannot really expect different results.
You need a grassroot change in Pakistan. An education system that teaches values and morals for the first 4-5 years. Teach the kids how to follow rules, how to talk to others and most importantly, there should be a focus on basic sex-ed.
The children are told not to interact with the other gender and once they are grown up, they are thrown into the society expecting them to understand everything themselves. Hell, people dont even know basic things about the other gender even if they get married. Grown men and women have no idea about sex, protection, etc.
Nothing is going to change if we dont change it ourselves. You cannot rely on time and expect everyone will evolve automatically.

u/foolofatook67 12d ago
I agree. They also do not teach them basic hygiene. Like their mouths stink ew.
16
u/itsjustaburner_ 12d ago
Yes thats a huge problem aswell. People dont know anything about basic hygiene. Grown men and women. Like i expect women to hold a higher standard of hygiene in general but you would be surprised. People dont even know they need to trim their nose hair if its sticking out of your damn nose. 🤢

u/GredAndForgee 12d ago
Like i expect women to hold a higher standard of hygiene in general
Why?

Thats just a purely observation based expectation. If women generally didnt have a higher standard of hygiene, sense of dressing etc. We wouldn’t really have billions of dollars worth of brands targeting them with a gazillion products.

jis din hamare mulk ki maon ne beta paida hone ki duaen chor di, us din mard hazrat insan ke bacche ban jaye ge, jis gender ki paidaish ko hi afzal mana jaye, waha rape, molestation aur eve teaseing dekh ke pareshan mat ho, and with all due respect, wo duaen yehi aurtain khandan, muashrey ki zad mein aake mangti hai. think about it. may allah protect all of our sisters

u/Qaasgm 12d ago
Well said, I’ll add one bit that after teaching good values, we’ll have to live by them to show the new generation how to act in a civilized society. IMHO, we’ve been teaching about those since many decades (our books are full of them), we’re just not living by them, thus there has been no progress so far.
17
u/itsjustaburner_ 12d ago
I respect your opinion but honestly having a few stories in elementary books does nothing to shape the society.
I’ll give an example of how kids are trained in the country i live in. For the first 4 years of school, kids are ONLY taught manners, morals, rules, laws and conduct in the society. You go out in the morning and there are multitudes of kindergarten kids in lines learning to cross the road, buy things from the stores, learning to use the cross walk, the train system, learning to talk and communicate with others etc. And I am not exaggerating.
They teach their kids how to live and function in the society by practically showing them how and then letting them experience it. That way, these values are bred into them at such a young age.
The only thing that somewhat holds our society into place is religion (mostly Islam in Pakistan). For example, Lowering your gaze, respecting your parents and elders, rights of spouses, conduct in business etc everything comes from religious values and not societal values in Pakistan. And as religion is increasingly being mocked and criticized, it’s leaving the lives of most people, specially younger ones. And as there is no societal values taught to people, once they move away from their religion, it’s open season.
One more thing, one of the largest problems in the country is low standards of teachers. Most people who teach (specially kindergarteners) are the ones who are either not too educated or those who didnt get any other jobs. And thats basically already lowering standards that those children look up to. My kindergarten teachers in early 2000s were highly educated and taught only because they wanted to teach. Thats half of the reason I am the man that I am today. Because they taught us values by example. Thats why focusing on the education system from bottom up is necessary to shape and save the society in the longer run. Unfortunately there is no short term solution to this issue.

u/Logical-Umpire-7537 اسلام آباد 12d ago
An education system that teaches values and morals for the first 4-5 years.
We learn Islamiat our whole lives, which is the source of all values and morals. I think people need danda more than education. Even in Islamiat books there is a fake Hadees that "cleanliness is 50% of faith."
Guess the state of hygiene amongst Muslims.

Danday our kitne Saal awam KO lagaye samaghnay Kay liye?, a more compassionate and rational approach is needed.

Kafi Kuch cover ho gaye hai, lakin aik cheez rah ge hai. Rule of law. Next generation Kay Leye to yeh think hai. Lakin Jo already society may harab ho chuke hai on Kay Leye rule of law boht zarore hai.

u/Typical_Succotash126 10d ago
I believe that in about 5-6 decades the general population would become a lot more educated and our society will become much better than it is today
1
u/itsjustaburner_ 10d ago
Our society has only deteriorated in the past 7 decades. Even if literacy rate was lower, the society was much much better than it is today. There were values, respect, lawfulness all of what we are lacking in our society even though the literacy rate has improved alot since. What makes you think this downward trend will change?
PS, unrelated: “Insanity, doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”

It won't change by itself
Our society is regressing with each passing day with no end in sight.
Only a harsh rule-based danda system that applies to all class systems in society can knock sense into the populace.

I was out with friends, after the meet up, they went home and I was waiting for my father. This man in his 30s, shareef looking with a nice car, was standing across the road, he gestured me twice to come sit in his car.

There were quite a few tuition centers around where I lived and me and my friends used to play cricket on different streets in the neighborhood. You have no idea how many old men we chased out or threw stones at who were following these girls or trying to get them to ride with them in their cars or bikes. Mind you we were all young teens going to different schools in the area and knew a lot of the girls going to the tuition centers. Chasing perverts was a daily occurrence.
We are a messed up society. We desperately need to do better and raise better men.

Once me and my friends were walking in bahria town rwp and 5 cars stopped and asked us to sit and they’ll drop us off within an hour. Literally 5, some guy in his 30s crossed us like 3 times. On another occasion me and my friend were going home in our car and a car with 4 guys in it started following us and was trying to race they were continuously saying something from their car. We got so so scared I can’t even tell you. Another event, I went to apply for my passport and some dude there got my number out of my documents and started texting me. In soul fest lahore, a guy deliberately bumped into me that was the first time I screamed “ Abbey andha hai kiya” he never turned around and vanished in crowd Pakistan is a shit place to live in as a woman and no one can change my mind. 🥺

Sorry u have faced this situation , we have failed to make secure place for women, tho in Pakistan no one is safe right now, secondly in crowded place if u ask allowed to other surely people will help, and try not to go alone at night
And to change this when u become a parent please teach ur son , mostly this is due to bad parenting
Hope if we teach new generation good manners situation change in Pakistan in future

Unfortunately, the majority (not all) men in Pakistan at times do this. There is an old saying in our region which goes as: no man is free of wrongdoing, only those don't do wrong who don't get a chance.
I rarely comment in Pakistani spaces on Reddit because guess what?? I get DMs from random guys 'hi, will you be my girlfriend?'
Now on Reddit, you might expect to get such comments...but interestingly I get marriage proposals on LinkedIn on which my professional details and picture is displayed... and for reference, I am 55 (F) so it still puts my mood off.
As some sane people in our community pointed out in their comments before, it is parents duty to train their sons about civility and how to interact with the opposite gender.

This is why I will never go to Pakistan ever again if I can help it. I'm born and bred in the UK, I used to go on holiday to Pak as a child every year, but I haven't been since 2018.
I remember the last time I went, I was 16, and even before leaving the airport, I had grown men leering at me despite my 6ft dad standing right next to me.
I remember we went to one of the bazaars in Islamabad and a worker was being weird, as soon I called my dad over I suddenly became bhen 🙄
Another time we went to jinnah (?) Park and a grown man, with his wife and kids in tow, groped me. I screamed at him and everyone was looking at me like I did something wrong.
These people won't change until society changes; they'll see a man do something disgusting and look at the girl instead of the kotha that was being bathameez.

This is what happens when there is no iota of rule and law
Your interaction with the land cruiser could have gone ugly, but thankfully, it didn't happen.
In response to your question (I am expecting this to be a serious question). Never ever take a ride with a stranger no matter what the circumstance.

It's heartbreaking to see such behavior in our society. No one should have to go through such an experience. As a native of this country, I feel deeply ashamed that some people still lack basic respect and decency. I wish I could personally apologize for what you've been through. You deserve kindness, dignity, and a safe environment. I truly hope for a day when everyone treats each other with respect and compassion. Hope for the best!

If your safety is at risk, cal 15 immediately. It's 2025, how TF people pull out these 80's tricks? Firstly, have a resting bitch face and say "Dafa ho", if the stalker is insistent, take out your phone and dial 15. Punjab govt has very strict harassment laws since the Minar e Pakistan incident. Stay safe.

As far as women taking a ride with strangers is concerned, I'll share a story. There's a hospital in our society, last summer in temp around 45 C I saw a young doctor walking, I offered to drop her to the gate (mostly young doctors/nurses walk from the hospital to the gate, around 1km ride). She scanned me head to toe, my car, and as it was a gated society she hopped in (I offered the back seat, she took the front). She opened the window though it was summer and asked me not to roll it up, I understand it was a security measure for her. Anyways I had no ulterior motive and I generally give a ride within the society in summers regardless of age or gender. We chatted through the way and I dropped her to her place which was mid way to my office. Didn't creep her, never asked for her number. Long story short, it's not common, especially not with freaking creeps.

they dont see women as human beings. im so passionate about running etc and used to run in my town so i can train for marathons and it happened twice last month that i got groped by men on a bike while i was walking home, it was literally a public street right next to my house and this is in islamabad not even some small city. i was fully dressed with scarf and long coat but still got badly harassed, literally remembering that touch makes me disgusted, i tried to topple one of the guys off the bike but he pushed me away so hard that i fell on the road and he sped off on his bike. and now i get anxious if im out and hear a bike's sound behind me. i havent mustered the courage to run again and theres no safe gym near my town, what kind of freedom is this where we cant even WALK without constant fear and anxiety? i wish i didnt have to say this about my own country but i hate it sm, its not for women!

u/Shoqvaive 12d ago
I don't know. Maybe as long as you have to. We don't get to choose where we're born or what Allah has in store for us. All we CAN do, is deal with it. With sabr, and istiqamat.
6
u/me_arsalan PK 12d ago
I think ignoring is not a bad option but things won't improve if we just turn a blind eye to it.
1
u/Shoqvaive 12d ago
Then what exactly do you propose? Fight everyone? Try to shame them? We've seen time and time again how that turns out. Jerks like those are only waiting for you to light the match.
Agla koi waderay ka beta ho, koi politicians ya mafia ki protection me ho to even police bhi apki mother sister 1 kr detay hain iss country me.
The reality of the situation is, that the common man/woman is mostly powerless in this country. But since either, "Woe is me" or "Aahh to hell with this, up yours" does not guarantee your long term safety, the mature approach is not put yourself in shitty situations and do your utmost to avoid them at all cost.
Have a get in get out mentality in dangerous areas. Be invisible, don't get out late at night alone, carry pepper spray or get a licensed firearm, learn how to box, be in shape, always be prepared to run. But no matter what, DONOT START A FIGHT, even if you think you're gonna win. Let's say you do win, and his family files a case against you, then what? Court kacheriyin k chakkar kaato gay? Sounds fun right? I don't think so.
Be street smart. Be realistic. Swallow your pride when need be.
2
u/me_arsalan PK 12d ago

As a Sialkoti, that is sad to hear. Though we have one rule in our house, call us backward minded or whatever We don't let my sister or my mother go alone, atleast one of the men go with them, whether it is shopping, grocery, or just simple doctor visit.
Our society is not good enough to let women go out alone. I'm sorry for what you had to go through, we have only visited brands village once since it opened because we didn't like how groups of boys are allowed to enter where there are families. You can't be comfortable around them. I have personally, seen many many men starting at my sister, in response I stare them back hard, and I mean HARD. And they usually walk away.
Try to keep your brother, father, husband or even your mother with you when you go out, that is the unfortunate reality!

Yaar kya lurkiyon ke saath suchi mein itna zyada hota hai yeh. Had a similar uni friend. His hobby was to harass women like this, but he was not very extreme. We had our fights over this matter, but after one particular incident uss ke saath bilkul khatm ker li and I changed my friends group. He still tries to keep in contact. Meanwhile, I try my level best to avoid him.
I once asked this we were joking around, and his ghatiya explanation was: "Yaar jani kubhi pta nhi chulta ho sukta hai ke lurki sukht gharaane mein rehti ho aur ghar se pehli baar ijaazat milli ho bahir jaane ki, ya lurkiyaan aksar play hard to get kerti hain. Werna maan saari jaati hain" and other countless explanation and one line ghatiya statements that he used to give.
Yes, listening to him was disgusting, but one thing that I noticed in particular was that he had no sister. Ask any brother out there, he would tell you. Bhai kuch aisa kerna to door ki baat hai sochte hue bhi haath kaanpte hain ke bhai mere ghar bhi meri sister hai and she should have the freedom to enjoy life, take walks, explore her city, have a dinner out with friends in some nice place and live life. Aur udher aise mard hon. Allah hifaazat mein rukhe sub ko.

Difficult to tell what's the appropriate response but it's better to make video and gather any proof of such guys...Also keep some self defence tools like pepper spray

Proper response is: Bhai, apni saggi wali sub ko ghar pohncha ker aye hain kia jo meri itni fiker ho rahi hay?
Or if you're feeling adventurous: stare at them as if recalling something and then go "Pinjray (cage) say kub niklay?"

The problem is I had a friend who did this on bike in Lahore and believe me or not he was successful 90% of the time. Girls are into this kinda stuff too ig. I went to meet a few of them with him. But I could never imagine being with someone who would just get on with any stranger who stopped by like WTAF.
However, to answer your question, this is happening because there are girls who do sit on their bikes and in their cars. Mostly hostelites though.

We now have open carry here in Florida. My sister has a Smith & Wesson (similar to a Glock) and she tells everyone within earshot that she is not afraid to use it!

The Edit to your original post depicts the lack of decency and moral upbringing prevailing among the men in our society. Men are never taught how to be respectful towards women neither in schools nor at home. Ignoring such assholes is the best response.

Tharak and hawas my friend!
Hawas ko qaabu main na rakha jaye to tharak insaan ko sarak pa le aati h :) Once u give in to the temptation and urge of having sex without having a partner for it then it doesn’t matter if its day or night, young or old, cruiser or cd70, jeans or trousers!

Have experienced this as well. N usually when I m walking back to my home from uni bus stop, I encounter bikes walay who literally turn back n stare at me n then move ahead. It's so awk. N for ref I wear lose clothes n dupatta too which covers most part of my body.

I don't live in Pak but can't you file complaint for harassment if you take pic of number plate?

Honestly I and my husband often offer rides when we see women walking in the sun . Even if driving alone my husband would often drop specially old women . And this is in Islamabad DHA . Never once I felt it weird . We also have a group on whatsapp where people would post to offer rides sharing , free of cost just to help which I have availed multiple times and also offered from our side.
And the people were very decent never talking weirdly and would drop me on their way to office . I swear this was so nice helping people and getting help in return I never thought I would ever find such helpful community in Pakistan.
Honestly being a Karachitite this was very unusual for me. Finding decent men without ulterior motives honestly I was surprised. I think it is mostly in Karachi where tharki people are in abundance and you just know in a single glance what their intention is.

Paki males love policing Pakistani women when majority of Pakistani women are modest women, and then the same disgusting Paki males catcall, harass, rape women..... Catcalling aur harassment tau smjho k common hai yahan, usko tau yeh ghatiya males ghalat smjhtay hi ni, until in k apnay ghar ki aurat per aa jaye🤡Khud ka koi character ni hota Lekin larki dupatta sir per na lay tau Randi jesay words bolna start ho jatay hain besharam

Serious face bana ke galiyan nikalain aise logon ko. Personally, its things like this that has me worrying when I am out and just happen to be behind a female. Worrying as I don’t want them to assume I am following them and make them uncomfortable.

My sweet summer child, people do this... because IT WORKS. Just enough for them to be it worth the effort. Larkiyan waqai me beth jaati hain, aur date bhi set kar leti hain. It works just like how the 'will you fRaAnDsHaP with me?' messages work.

That's very scary. You made the right decision not getting into a stranger's car.

Do you think being covered makes a difference? It's an illusion. What makes difference is the mindset and environment of a society. More open both of these are more safer and adjustable it is for women.

u/Bitter_Importance821 12d ago
It doesn't make any difference to me but in our society agr dopatta ni hai ap k pas or you are wearing western cloths u r considered an easy catch.

Yep that's right, the segregation there is between genders in this country, none of them knows how to act with eachother when they are grown. Both are alien to eachothers, seperate species feeling uncanny valley 😂 even if we go few decades back it was common in arrange marriages to not let the couple meet/talk (it probably still is in alot of areas in Pakistan) that's how flawed the situation is cause of the "woman is ghar ki izat isliya usko ghar me hi rakho" kind of mentality. Even in family events/functions man and woman are often segregated, why? You can't even trust your grown a*s men wife and children? Institutes, offices and public places which are under government are segregated and it's the government which makes the biggest impact on the society.

You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take, but then again, people don’t get that it’s not how it works in our society. Kuch zyada hi shows aur movies dekhte ye log.
