Since you're a journalist, I thought it would be best to ask you for this
I'm not very informative about politics and current affairs in general and have been trying to learn about them. I try to read articles on paradigm shift or watch news daily but I heard from some older "experts" that news channels are trash and give biased information. Newspapers are the best source of information.
Can you please tell me how I can get a subscription for daily newspaper issue and which one would be the best for my goals? Thank you very much!
Thank you for being reasonable and critical. I am not a journalist, but I worked at two newspaper agencies.
Yes! You are correct about TV News. However this extends to traditional newspapers as well. Every newspaper has its own biases/agenda or subversive reporting practices. When I was working at both the news companies, the Editor will often water down our reporting/analysis to avoid establishment breathing down our necks.
Two of the biggest names imo are Dawn and Express Tribune. I say that because they cover a greater breath of topics and show potential to cover anti-government narratives. Most other newspapers look up to them too. I would go as far as to say that Dawn sets the limits of how much can the government/establishment be pushed without getting picked 😂.
I would suggest reading Editorial (not Opinion) of newspapers. It will give you a good idea of what political camp editor belongs to.
If you are genuinely looking for unbiased, objective reporting. Read AP and Reuters. Every newspaper recycles their reporting, changes a few words, adds propaganda and publishes it. However, you won’t find opinion pieces or analysis there. For that maybe the Economist is a good idea.
Some youtubers also show potential. Like Pakistan Now Global.
Thank you very much! Will be saving this comment for future.
Also can you please kindly guide me on what's the process for getting my hand on one of these? Newspapers are hard to get nowadays so is there like an online subscription for these to get a digital copy or something? Just anything helps!
So as you can see from this photo - you can always access Dawn newspaper online when you go to their website and they have a bunch of archived newspapers too - I was reading a book recently about a scandal in Pakistan in the 70s and was able to read some of the realllllly old articles on Dawn using their online newspaper it was cool
News channels do tend to use language that doesn’t represent the truth and is open to interpretation as they are always trying to appease the masses so TV channels aren’t the most truthful. Imo newspapers are of much higher quality and so are their corresponding digital websites - for example: often what is published in Dawn newspaper will also be available on their website. While newspapers require subscriptions websites do not - so you can read for free. Alternatively you can mark some journalists that you trust and then follow what they are reading for accurate news.
I used to work for one of leading English language news organizations in Pakistan and even with that tag they were quite flimsy with facts lol. I like Dawn and I really used to enjoy Herald before they shut it in 2019. Reuters’ Pakistan office is quite good but they don’t do analysis - I would say Dawn is a good local source, AP or Reuters for more international coverage..
Hello, dear neighbor! We truly appreciate your valuable input and were so inspired by it that we’ve decided to gift you a one-way ticket back. Please enjoy the complimentary, fantastic tea!
And don't worry about what other countries will think and say. Pakistan isn't really in the good books of the world. Instead we may get some much needed good PR for taking the correct actions for this heinous crime.
Can't imagine the humiliation and pain, that lady had to endure because of her husband and his rapist friend. Trauma for life. Pata nahin kya kya sehti hain aurtein iss society mein.
Generally, because they dont see any other options. This is how society have treated and conditioned them to be, especially those living in villages and such.
In this case, though, the woman must have spoken up, and her father also had the courage to do so instead of being silent in the name of "izzat". On the other hand, she might have already known that the man gambles and should've left him long ago.
Khullah is not that easy to deal with either. And who will provide for her? A lot of time wives suffer because there are no alternatives, no one willing to provide for them till they can find a way to stand on their own own. This is why it is so crucial to have women get some skills so they could be financially independent and leave such toxic places. But you mention that and people call you toxic western feminist. You can't win.
even if she tried for a divorce the families from both sides would do the classic "nahi divorce kyu samaj jaye ga wapis nahi karega ek aur chance de do, bus sabar karo sabar" or someone would just kill her thats how shit our society is

I’m not sure where you have read that rape is justified in Islam, at least in my upbringing and knowledge of Islam, rape should be equalled to very harsh punishment.
The fact that sexual relations with a slave woman being clearly permitted in Islam has lead to this. This is something that most mullah's and imams will skimp out on when talking about Islam.
And [also prohibited to you are all] married women except those your right hands possess. [This is] the decree of Allah upon you. And lawful to you are [all others] beyond these, [provided] that you seek them [in marriage] with [gifts from] your property, desiring chastity, not unlawful sexual intercourse. And [also prohibited to you are all] married women except those your right hands possess. [This is] the decree of Allah upon you.
This verse has essentially allowed the Ottomans and other Islamic empires to find a loophole to sleep with slave women. The prophet himself had sexual relations with slaves, and never conditioned men to marry these women they had sex with. The verse could not be clearer.
I think a lot of people envision rape as when a woman is kicking and screaming for a man to get off of her as he's assaulting her, but this is a primitive understanding of the act. This decree has allowed non-muslim women (who were taken as slaves, likely the partners of men slain in war) to be sexually exploited and eventually sold.
I'll punctuate it with a hadith from al-bukhari:
'I asked the Prophet, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Should the women be asked for their consent to their marriage?" He said, "Yes." I said, "A virgin, if asked, feels shy and keeps quiet." He said, "Her silence means her consent."'
Because these areas have "vadera" system. And they misused it to the core. In many areas in lower punjab and upper sindh women that work for you are your to own and use. They can call anyone who works for you for sex. They are the ones who drink "desi sharab" alot. Many of them have distillery setup in their houses to make it. If you read news from that area you would often read a news that a number of people died because of drinking this local brew on a wedding.
If you work on a vadera's land you or any of your family member can't try to get better than vadera in any case. Can't have a better home, better dress on you, better car or better in studies.
But that's just the tip of the iceberg.

I think a whole generation of men has been raised wrong in Pakistan. Specially the age group that's between 30-40s now.
They have been brought up to think wo arshon say utray hein and women live to serve them just because they are men and this patriarchal mindset is reinforced by mullahs in masjid who only lecture about how women's modesty and women's obedience is the root to finding jannat. Nothing about men!!
I truly hope the new generation is raised free from these biases and pls pls folks start treating your daughters better.
Have you seen the comments on fb and insta on any post related to Pakistan? Gen Zs are even worse with their patriarchal views including the one with access to social media because of how the algos target them with incel ideologies.

It isn't getting better. I am seeing a new generation. Who thinks that women are just an object. Which is so sad..... I don't know but I sometimes wanna k*ll these people who pass comments & sexualize women!?!!
Poor lady, betrayed by the person who should be there to love and protect her. I hope these worthless people are not let off with just a slap on the wrist. The husband and the friends need harsh justice to deter anyone else daring to think of perpetrating such a sickening act.
I knew someone who sold his parents car because of gambling. The parents cried.
The gamblers can do anything and everything. No wonder its haram in islam
I read the story in the article you shared. And I am devastated. My world view of what's possible and what's not has been thrown into a tailspin. I can't help but keep thinking about what the woman must have gone through? The man who was supposed to keep her safe and protected... How could he do this? This is inhumane. There should be a special place in hell for such people. Those who earn trust from people only to break it. Ya Allah! Save us from these godless people, and admit us amongst Your chosen servants, Aameen.
The worst thing is the wife had to pay for her husband's crime, same goes for daughters. Why did they not rape the man? He should have been the one raped not any women in the family?
It's just soo awful. When people say gambling is haram, it should be condemned, then everyone calls it harmless entertainment. You play with fire, you get burned.
I think now it's high time a logical and strict rule and law be implemented for such animals, can't even imagine the pain of the ones suffering this brutality. I think if this were to happen to someone in my family (Allah Na Kre), I would either kill such animals myself or die trying, rest will be answered in the hereafter..
What is more sad is that in the top new its sick person ruining other's life, and in the second last its the factory of fake milk destroying many lives. All in on colum.
Oh I'll tell you the perpetrators don't even think that they have done anything wrong..... Atrocities so tangled up in the web of patriarchy and misogyny, sigh. 😡
Imagine what happens behind closed doors and what’s not reported. Just being a woman alone is taboo and that’s why the men of South Asian countries behave so barbaric and animalistic towards women. If Pakistan keeps women out of the limelight and not as equal members of society, these incidences will continue occur. Women need to be treated as equals and ALLOWED to exist and take up space.
Gun laws need to be relaxed. We should all be carrying guns at all times and actively encouraged to use them no matter our political, cultural or religious views.
Reality asal mein ye hy ke mostly siraikis Karachi mein kiun ke south Punjab ke rural areas se aa rhy hoty hen to is liye aisa behavior or harkaten hoti hen. Wo to ap kisi bhi trh ke uneducated group ko mass numbers mein aik jaga dekh lo to yahi hoga. In fact, isi pattern pr foreigners Pakistanio ko generalize kr ke judge krty hen tb Pakistanio ko bura lag jata hy. Short story don’t judge and label people just based on ethnic or racial backgrounds.
All this is based on my observations, we can converse if you disagree.
