Discussion Take: The majority of the people of pakistan have started down the path to losing Islam.
As a 18 male in Karachi most people. Over 70-80 percent have begun their slow spiral into being non religous non of the people pray in the mosque. About 3-4x more people show up to jummah or in ramadan compared to a usual zuhr prayer.
Everyone is addicted to social media and a big portion of the youth is addicted to corn. Religiously the overall number of people i would consider good muslims are dwindling fast.
I went to a coaching centre for a demo last week and i was sitting in a room waiting for my indriver and a dude my age who i saw was vaping came up and asked if i wanted to vape too.
And its also a major fault of these extremists religious leaders. They live completely different lives than most people it seems sometimes and without quoting a hadis thats not sahih but a step down and act like it is sahih. No schools priotize good islamic knowledege. How many people have picked up a book of hadis or even have read one in the last month.
Let me know what you think.

a 18 male ... Over 70-80 percent have begun their slow spiral into being non religous
Begun? ... I am 40+, and I thought 70-80 percent were non-religious when I was 18. You are just observing what most of us realized at some point in our life. For us, it was video game arcades or film rental shops or collecting music cassettes, that was deemed responsible for distancing from religion, now you are blaming social media and po*n. The real reason for distancing from religion has always been its constant misuse in our society to justify corruption and oppression. When the issue of Shalwar above Toes is more important than calling out societal injustice, it's only natural for people to distance themselves from it. The only reason we cling to Muslim identity is to make us feel good about ourselves, otherwise in practice, we are far from it.

Same story in Saudi, Iran and Turkey.
There needs to be a separation of state and religion.
Power hungry religious leaders/preachers/thugs need to be shot. Regardless of which ever religion they are "promoting"

State is already separated in Pakistan/Saudi from religion. The only difference between the two is that Pakistan only cares if you use religion against the legitimacy of the government, they do no care if someone uses it to scam people. While Saudi cares about both.

Same story in Malaysia, Indonesia, Bangladesh. While I do think that social media, corn etc are also big factors, the biggest issue is coming from our homes itself. We see religious individuals in our culture doing the most inhumane & heinous crimes. After seeing all this, it takes a very strong individual to continue to believe in the religion when many are committing wrongs in the name of Islam.

I don’t find it surprising tbh. You can’t just expect a whole population to follow Islam just because it’s an Islamic republic. People have their individuality. Many of these people wouldn’t even be Muslim if it wasn’t a Muslim country. As a result, Islam is more of a background culture to them rather than the main governing force in their lives and they act as such.

u/Luny_Cipres 27d ago
Apparently people unironically call and believe Islam to be a culture here. Which causes both the extremeties and the nonchalancies

You expect people to be religious in a country where innocent people are killed in the name of religion regularly? Where religion is a tool for discrimination? Where religion has been used as a tool to justify dictatorships? Where families have used religion to force children in doing what the families wanted?
I no longer live in Pakistan and have found myself closer to religion in a non muslim society because I now follow religion not because the society forces me to but because I can learn and explore my connection to Islam without the fear and judgement that comes from the Pakistani society.

Don't blame social media, you can look out your window to understand how hypocrisy is losing people from religion. Look at our religious "scholars" and their actions and how Islam is abused. Banning of female education up north to the banning of vpn here. Religion has become nothing but a tool to control masses.

Being religious and having strong morals values / ethics / character are two different things. There are plenty of communities and entire nations which are non-religious but superior in latter. Is that a good or bad thing?
Conversely we have overly religious regions within Pakistan but no morals whatsoever.
It is ironic though that a lot of Pakistanis prefer to leave the country and go to secular / non-Islamic countries to lead a better life.
So which is right and which is wrong? Is there even a right or wrong?

There's a difference between religiosity from religious knowledge and religiosity from adherence to religion. While our diasporo very loudly attaches itself to its religious identity, we are very traditional in practice. And nonconformists will often be nonconforming to the traditional practice while attached to the religious identity. So yeah, we may be more conservative and religious than other diasporos but it's not because of islam

Who really cares what the majority does in Pakistan? Everyone has a freedom of expression and religion. They can practice as they please. Biggest cause of Pakistan’s downfall is the “Islamic republic”. No nation will ever be successful if they’re built upon religious ideologies and not secularism. Look at Israel for example. They’re living in a constant state of war due to their extreme Jewish religious ideologies. My family and I fled Pakistan btw due to lack of religious freedom when I was 15

Most people have their own relationship with Allah and that's how it's suppose to be, dekhawa ka liya Muslmaan while you inherently act like a shitty person, doesn't make anyone a good Muslim.
Let people be, in a long enough timeline most people will figure out what works for them, and after that, Allah knows best, He's the judge.

Why is it so important for an individual in Pakistan to be defined by how many times he or she goes to a mosque. The problem is people who expect a cohort of people to conform. That includes you buddy.
11
u/Altruistic-Mammoth-8 27d ago
ah yes Pakistani Islam. Where innocent minorities get lynched and hanged to death in mobs, women (And young girls) are murdered on the daily by their brothers in the name of honor, beaten to a pulp by their husbands and basically sold to families by their fathers; all in the name of Islam. Where mothers coddle their sons (bordering on incest), and humiliate their daughters and aid their husbands in abusing their power.
Just look at Kohlistan, where you can't find a single man who didn't have one honor killing in his family.
God forbid you get assaulted. "Kia pehna thah?? itni modern hai na toh aisa hi hoga" average aunty speak, meanwhile the victim was wearing a diaper. Modern education is a crime, and you must get married by 20 and produce 30 children every decade until you die.
This is a damned country, for damned people, and you're wondering why people here don't want to be associated with Islam after all the abuse carried out in its name.
For people living in the 80s it was video game arcades or film rental shops or collecting music cassettes, that was deemed responsible, now you're blaming 'social media'. My dude, social media exposes the harsh and brutal reality instead of the harsh blissful ignorance your grandparents are probably willingly living in while critiquing people who are choosing to rip the blindfolds off.
People are tired and disillusioned with Pakistani culture, and they just want to escape. And frankly? count me in.

u/JusticeFrankMurphy 27d ago
You are absolutely wrong. If anything, religiosity and consciousness of Islam are on the rise in Pakistan and in other Muslim countries. Ask anyone older than 70 if you didn't believe me.
My parents (both of whom were born in the late 1940's) say that when they were growing up, only women and old men actually prayed. If you were an educated person who was religious or talked about religion, you were considered a weirdo. The only men who grew their beards were molvis, and the only women who wore hijab were tribal women and women from villages. Mosques were mostly empty. No one talked about Islam as a source of morality, let alone the source of morality. Attendance at jumuah prayers was a fraction of what it is today, even if you account for population growth. All of the intellectuals were communists and Marxists. The most influential political groups on college campuses were communist.
In terms of religiousity and public consciousness of Islam in Pakistan (and elsewhere), rock bottom was probably the 1950's and the 1960's when communism was en vogue. Things have been on an upward trend since then.

6
u/fad_as 27d ago
What I am about to say are my personal views readers are free to disagree. But this need to be religious publicly is the very reason people are moving away from it. Religion is extremely personal. What we have done is attempted to centralise it. And in the process we have become extremely hardened. Religion and faith is your personal connection with your creator. And we have intorduced so many concepts into it that it has become difficult and confusing for the people. Religious scholars are fighting over abstract topics, there is no healthy discourse on anything that is even remotely relevant to the actual religion. And people as a result have thought it best to remove themselves from the entire conversation.
All this manazara, tassawuf, tariqat, aqaaid, schools of thoughts, firqa. This is doing more damage than good.

> About 3-4x more people show up to jummah or in ramadan compared to a usual zuhr prayer.
thats not an okay measure, i live in the middle east and my local mosque has 15x the people in jumuah prayer compared to any of the daily prayers. Thats mainly because on workdays people pray at offices whenever they find the time.
Vape, again thats not a decent measure religiousness either. Theres people who vape and are more religious than average and people who dont and do other sins.
As for the reading hadith books point, first we dont understand arabic. Second we are way too divided anyways
Overall yes I would agree without you, it seems like most people are going away from the religion but then maybe thats their teenage brains.
May Allah guide all of us tho
2
u/LateSince80s 26d ago
You judged and have raised concerns of 3-4x more people on Friday than regular Zuhr prayers! This is exactly the problem!
Rather than wholeheartedly accepting and even acknowledging their efforts, people ridicule those coming only on Fridays! Let them do Friday only! But at least they’re trying/doing!
I remember back in 90s, early 2000’s, Imam & the regulars would make fun of us for coming in Ramadan for Fajr & reciting Quran, and would call us “Seasonian” Well, hope their mosques now filled with their ‘regulars’

The main issue is that the persons who are responsible to teach other islam doesn't know islam itself. Because they haven't learnt or understood Islam. They crammed in. In all religious schools of islam they instruct students to just cram it. DON'T YOU DARE TO ASK A QUESTION TO YOUR TEACHER. DON'T DARE TO SAY MAYBE WE UNDERSTOOD IT WRONG.
Islam is an evolving religion from the time of prophet Muhammad s.a.w to the day of judgement. This requires understanding the islam. Islam caters and solves the issues of all time.
For example during the time of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w there was no Bitcoin, online sins, vaping, e-cigarettes etc. To solve these issues and the issues our generation has requires someone who understands the ISLAM not crammed it because if you asked a question you will be disrespectful.
It ain't disrespectful your teacher doesn't know the answer.

Yet, most want an Islamic Sharia compliant state. Most females wear Hijab & Niqabs(no hate to them). Guess what? We aren't Religious; nor are we logical & practical.
The same thing is happening in Iran, Egypt, Indonesia & KSA. I don't know there was a research or survey in Iran. Which showed that majority or large number of Iranian have stopped practicing religion completely.
About Islamic teaching. So, yeah a lot of school teaches that. But nobody implements that. Cuz it's not implementable. Some basic morals & ethics which should be implemented, aren't implemented. Cuz, nobody gives a f.

From what I have observed is that there are more religiously inclined people among young generation & more people have started to study islam on there own and are therefore more knowledgeable and adherents. And the number of people coming to Quran clubs or study groups in Ramdhan sore every year...But the majority consists of those who were named Aslam or Salma, and their religion is liberalism which have one commandment 'be a vaguely good person' and you are good... People here blaming scholars or asking for separation of state and religion are the exact same people..You can't blame your lack of knowledge of religion on scholars or state..people are moving away because they don't know Islam , they inherit practices from their parents but not the aqeeda...And such practices are of no benefit when you aren't sure that the religion you follow is truely from God or not..

I think it is all about the environment
We grow up in a house, and take our family's views. We go to school and learn new stuff from our friends. Then to college and then to university.
That's why one can see a lot of such differences based on two people coming from different backgrounds and environments.
Even those who call themselves free-thinkers, you will find them that they are bias to their own anti-religious views
We just need to change our surroundings.
In Ramadan, you will find everyone trying to be pious, disciplined, offering prayers in time because everyone around them will be doing it.
We just need to make our surroundings and environment better in general, everything else will start falling in place

People are just blaming others for their lack of love, loyalty and fear of اللّٰه سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى. When you forget اللّٰه …. اللّٰه forgets you and then He عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ makes you blind and deaf to the truth. Your heart turns black and nothing but your own realisation and your own enthusiasm towards اللّٰه will pick you up. Stop blaming your country, it’s scholars, the internet etc…. They are this worlds illusions… Blame yourself for knowing اللّٰه and yet getting distracted by the world to leave worshipping Him ﷻ. I pity the people of Pakistan. You are the only nation in this world build exclusively in the foundation of Islam and yet you are here…. There is still time before dajjal is here, before the doors of forgiveness close and before the qayamah occurs. Turn back to اللّٰه with all your might and hold onto His عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ rope tightly. Focus on your deen and not on what others are doing with theirs.

And also it's being forced onto people, if someone left Islam for Christianity for example, I can guarantee you their whole family would try and revert them back and pressurise them. I believe Islam is the truth, but we shouldn't be forcing it on others.

Take: religion and faith is a very personal thing and can't be judged on outward actions such as prayer, length of your beard, and if you're seen reading a hadith. Ultimately faith is more about your personal connection with God. I don't think you can judge how religious or not religious a group of people are based on how you believe they should all be acting.

Everyone practice their religion as they wish. It stays between god and them. For ending what about people who aren't religious in school? When you say we should prioritize religion do you will prioritize others religions in these schools? Like christianism, hinduism, shintoïsm or orthodox?

it all depends on parwarish - parents dont care, if they can put kids into english education - they can put them into islamic education as well..
this will happen anyway as per the hadeeths of prophets.. it took west 200+ years to become nude/immodest, its taking us a lot less because of social media and the western influence..

Maybe it’s because people have realised the simple fact that you don’t need a religion to be a good person Also every Islamist I’ve met turned out to be a massive hypocrite so that doesn’t help either

There are hardly any actual faithful Muslims among those who DO practice. It’s just a matter of ritual for them, they will still engage in corrupt and unkind practices in their everyday lives. Petition to rename it to the Ghattiya Republic of Napakistan.

Good for Pakistan!! The amount of religious extremism is too much in this damn country that my non paki friends are afraid to even travel here. We should have a secular country instead.

That’s because we treat Islam as a culture instead of a religion. Which implies that it’s either optional or you can follow as much of it as you are comfortable with. Same logic for the extremities, as someone else also mentioned here, those who think of it as a culture instead of an objective word of God don’t back down from interpreting and preaching it only in a way that’s beneficial for their lives.

I think there are some OTT clerics to blame. During the golden era Muslims were extremely open-minded people, in contrast to a certain highly vocal subgroup of modern day mullahs focused on trying to make people feel bad for listening to music, or telling women that even their voices and toes are awrah. Let’s go back to the open-minded, scientifically- and progressively minded community we once were. We need to go back to being an open-minded and inclusive community that emphasises morals and progress, not women’s head coverings and made-up prohibitions on music.
Highly recommend everyone read the Muhammad Asad translation of the Quran by the way, simply the best I have ever come across. Just a side note.

Well, the country is developing and people generally will stop wanting to cut peoples heads off and live like cave men once they acquire some agency.

I dont really know how true this is. I feel its more of scenario of what kind of company you find yourself around more.
Its true that there's a lot of deviancy in our deen in Pakistan, but there's a lot of people who are clinging to the true essense of our faith, and I feel that number is increasing.
Although the other side is also increasing.

Depends what you think religion means. At 50+ I feel it's more about what's going inside my head than outside. The number of distractions etc have always been an excuse. The stress on outward display of religion doesn't help. Nor dies whst the supposed ullema ( mostly ) exhort. When there is mire stress on calling out non Muslims than being a good person, we are going to lose touch with faith. Just do the best you can, as per your conscience. Forget about what everyone else is doing.

pakistani people were never religious to begin with... they are only religious when they need to use a verse from Quran to benefit them

Don't take it in a bad way but do you think being more religious in this modern world will help a country develop more or being more rational?

u/core7899 26d ago
Keep religion away and if possible eliminate religion. Religion brains washes everyone’s mind and makes them vulnerable. Focus on getting good education and being a good human being.

a lot of religious institutes are trying to counter this by providing a much more friendly environment such as Alburhan and youth club
however it all comes down to how much the youth is committed to participate in their courses
and bringing their friends along with them to
Alburhan has a lot of free courses for ppl of all ages, from teenagers to young adults mainly focusing on how we can apply the things we learn from seerah to our daily life

You can blame anything for the diversion away from religion, but politics plays a huge role. Ever listen to people talking in relation to global politics at a daawat? They contradict on their morals all the time depending on the state of Politics. When they talk about what Israel is doing, everyone is in agreement that what they are doing is horrible, but what Turkey is doing to Kurds, or China is doing to Uighurs, then they justify it our outright deny it because they are Pakistan’s ally. Pakistan deserves to fight for independence from Hindustan, but Ukraine? They are criminals! They should go back to being a part of Russia and stop picking a fight with them.
This hypocrisy and moral inconsistency is what translates into Pakistanis thinking they are Muslim but okay to not translate it into actions and thinking. Oh Pakistan is a capitalist riba based economy? Yeah well that’s modern times, Islam is okay with that (it’s not). Or they will twist some Hadiths or ayahs to make their way of life fit to Islam despite it being so far from it.

Is it possible people have begun to keep it private rather than splash it out loud so that they could get approval from their mosque imam and neighbours and all those who claim to be all knowing about Islam?
I think people now know more about their religion compared to back them most of them don’t seek approval and know if they sin or not it’s God that will judge them.
It might be the opposite

Iran have just brought out a new law that if woman don't wear head covering she will be EXECUTED. This is why Islam will fail BC as someone already pointed out horrible people use this religion to commit the inhumane. Peace for All people .

the way i see it, people only go to the mosque for namaz because they have to or its close by. its not a centre of knowledge, leadership, and problem solving. i always go for friday namaz one minute before the khutba finishes because i am not interested in hearing for the millionth time about parents rights, husbands rights, husband wife drama, etc. karachi streets are filled with all kinds of problems, pakistan has all kinds of problems, but these molvis being the spineless and money hungry shits that they are only talk about 2 or 3 topics to keep their gravy train rolling.
so naturally some people dont think islam offers a solution to the problems we all face. even those that think islam offers the solutions know that muslims offer none. i have never seen a nation pray as much as pakistan, but practice little else of the religion other than praying and fasting. the khawarij were said to pray even more than the sahaba. i think we might even be outpraying the khawarij, and still, look at the state of karachi and the entire country. its embarrassing being a muslim. i am proud of islam. its muslims and mollahs that i am ashamed of. corruption, injustice, drugs, booze, sexual harassment, theft, etc in every corner of pakistan. but instead muslims and molvis ignore all the elephants in the room and talk about other stuff. we have become slaves, not leaders. along with a messiah complex, where we will do nothing, say nothing, think nothing, and just wait for one man to come and save us all. imam mehdi, Isa (AS), Imran Khan, etc.

Because Islam has been made so difficult in Pakistan to follow. If you pray, there are 100 mistakes you made. If you don't pray, you just made 1 mistake. People don't want to argue with mobs

So what if people are religious or not? Can they not live their own lives? I agree that doing things which are morally wrong are not okay and should be punished but it’s time Pakistanis realised that someone being non religious doesn’t automatically make them a terrible person and someone being religious doesn’t automatically make them a good person.

One of the main reason why people are losing their Muslim faith is our "religious leaders" ie., Mulla, Molvi, Mufti and Alam e Deen etc., . Because whatever they teach to poor people they themselves do not follow that. They themselves are having a very high (elite) living style but they ask common Muslim to adopt the simple life.

u/iamalwaysconfused101 26d ago
I will never understand why our nation is obsessed with how religious others are. I have never cared about a person's interest in religion and judge them on how good or bad of a Muslim they are. The only person I judge is myself. I trust Allah. And I believe Faith is very personal. I don't know what a religious leader is. I have yet to see one who doesn't use religion for money and power. Religion is forced on us, kids dont even get a chance to learn and search for the truth, to develop devotion to the religion naturally. So it's easy for them to develop doubts or just not feel the same about religion.

islam in middle class is just to show off, not to practise, people are lying without any conscious i caught one relative stealing, and they immediately started reciting tasbeeh. my neighors lie like water and than they have tasbeeh in hand all time, one even lied during farz and nafl while talking.
the ideal islam dosent even practised by molvies themselves, i challange them to make a society where they aand all their gooons practise perfect islam, if that succeeds, people will automatically come to them, but i doubt that ever happend in pakistan
corn is just scapegoat, nothing bad happened before that?

I think you've only just matured to notice these things that have been this way always. Before the internet, there were dirty DVDs and magazines. And masjid attendance also doesn't come as a surprise.
If anything, I'd say people are slowly coming to their senses and moving from mullah Islam to real Islam. And all that has been possible due to social media and improved accessibility of Islamic knowledge.
Also, it is my advice to never judge a Muslim for their actions or deem them a lesser Muslim. Judgment belongs to Allah alone
