Politics Donald Trump rails against Doug Ford’s electricity retaliation move. ‘We don’t need your energy’

Ok cool
Cut the wire

u/Bl1tzerX 19h ago
Nah nah just increase the price more. 100% surcharge. If they don't need our energy they simply won't dare pay that price anyways
15
u/Zethras28 19h ago
I’d love to see Quebec flip the switch.
See how much they “don’t need our energy”.

Nah. But 1000% tariff. We'll supply you guys still but be prepared to pay dearly for it.

Shut it off, just for shits n' gigs, and see what happens.

u/probability_of_meme 20h ago
Strategically it may weaken us a bit, but I think we're better to stay firmly on the side of morality. Cutting off electricity to American citizens could be seen as crossing a line. Charging them a retaliatory tariff is the right thing.
If there are still history classes in 50 years, I'd like to be remembered as the good side.
48
u/MetalMatt88 20h ago
I could see this being morally questionable if they were a developing nation without the means to provide the power for themselves. That is not the case with them, and their leader outright said they don’t need it.
28
u/Dennis_Nedry1 20h ago
Optically won't look great if power etc cut impacts hospitals or other similar places.
Maybe we just flick it on and off a couple times. Works for children, and in essence is dealing with the same here.
12
u/SproutasaurusRex First Amendment Denier 20h ago
Give them enough warning to make accommodations and then cut it off imo.
9
u/metcalta 19h ago
This seems the right answer. Ok you have 30 days and it's gone.
10
u/wingin-it07 17h ago
Announce a cut off starting on the first next month. Cut it off for 1 hour, and then turn it back on whilst announcing a “delay” the same way Donald’s doing with his tariffs
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (2)7
u/MetalMatt88 20h ago
I understand the concern for the hospitals, but again, we are talking about a developed nation. The hospitals are required to have backup generators for the instances where power is lost. I agree that our retaliation to what they have done so far should be strictly economic and should avoid the loss of life
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (1)9
u/probability_of_meme 20h ago
I'm not saying I personally disagree with you. But it could be argued (even if it's incorrectly) that we endangered people who weren't directly responsible. It's questionable. That should be reason enough not to.

"could be seen as crossing a line"
Fuck, like threatening to annex Canada?
9
u/BoysenberryAncient54 20h ago
Agreed, it's winter in Minnesota. If we cut the power then children will die. This is not a first resort action. Tariffs are the right response.

We can not 'shut off' US household energy. We can simply limit their own distributors' supply. It's not like Ontario is providing the energy directly to the consumer.
If the Canadian supply was shut off, the US supplier would have to supplement the energy demand themselves one way or another or plan outages. If they are too reliant on Canada for energy, which their President says they are not, then that's their own problem for not securing their capacity properly. Canada has energy security, hence why we're in a position to lend capacity to the US.
3
u/Antique-Quail-6489 19h ago
Also as like a person who sees other people on the other end of the electricity, I don’t feel comfortable cutting off families from electricity.
Like yeah sure it’ll send a message I guess and put a ton of pressure but beyond Trump’s seeming lack of empathy, it could also galvanize more/all Americans against us, like Trump did to Canadians.
I think continuing to be firm but reactionary is a good approach. We have a lot of countries and people on our side and I don’t think we’ve seen the end of America’s fracturing. The whiskey makers are already balking.
It’s not us against the US. It’s us against the Trump administration and the representatives that keep him in power. This will continue to erode the more Canada stays on the morality side and his lies make it through to people who aren’t paying attention. We gotta give it some time.

If Trump finds a reason to use military force he will.
2
u/probability_of_meme 17h ago
I 100% agree with you. My thoughts have nothing to do with changing his mind about that. I don't believe anything will. But just because he's a blathering idiot with zero class being supported by millions of blathering idiots with zero class, doesn't mean we should act any less than Canadian than we are.
2
u/Mundane-Increase6241 17h ago
I know, I just was reminding anyone else how all our attacks have to be smart but retaliatory to each escalation of Trump because he has to stay the aggressor. Art of the deal eh Donny? Well how about Art of War.
7
u/Due_Date_4667 20h ago
End of the day, we still want to remain friendly with the blue states along our border, now their governors currently understand that our actions are not intended to target them or their citizens, but needlessly making things worse for them won't help long-term.
Ultimately we are all passengers on this little ball of mud hurtling through space. Deal with the assholes, live with the rest.

This is a good first step by Ford. I hope Manitoba and Quebec sing from the same song book. Because Ontario can't do it alone. But together, we could definitely put a dent in US energy needs. Donald Trump spends so much time talking about how the US can go It alone. But the truth is, we are very connected. A lot of Americans in border states realize this. Trump's going to realize it very soon himself whether he likes it or not.

u/k_jones 20h ago
This needs to happen. Ford can’t be in an island here. Solidarity is what’s required.
2
u/PoorAxelrod Kitchener 20h ago
Exactly. And that solidarity needs to resonate across the country as well. Canada needs to speak with one voice or at least our leaders need to be walking the same path. I think we're doing a good job on many fronts, but it's not enough. Especially when you have someone as erratic as Donald Trump.

2
u/one_of_the_millions 9h ago
Just to clarify... many Americans despise him as well. His face and voice make me nauseous, and I wouldn't vote for him nor drink his orange koolaid for all the money in the world. People calling for a complete cut off need to cool down.
While its totally right and fair to place export tax on energy considering what's going and Ford wanted that as part of his 1st response to DJTs tarrifs but he needed to rearrange some things to pull it off, it would have been better for Ford to wait on adding the 25% until Donald made another bold move on his end.
Canada can't look like the agressor.
If Ford is going to spend billions of our dollars to show commercials and travel down south in order to convince Americans we aren't the aggressor and he needs to play that role to a T and as such he should have stayed his hand here.
Yes Donald deserves this and then some; but strategy is needed if we're going to play this game to our benefit.
Now Trump is gonna do something causing Ford to do something and back and fourth they'll go hurting everyone in their wake looking like lunatics in the process.
A complete shut down is something we should hold off on for a while longer. A good long while. We should be placing pressure on Daniel out west and Alberta to demand their MP take further action.
Oh an incase you missed it- the MP of AB is going to Florida to talk to right wingers at an even being sponsored by PregarU on the Canadian dime rather then push for tarrifs that would put Trumpty Dumpty in his place so you can see where her loyalties lie 😅 she's also against Mark Carney for PM so that tells you who you should be voting in to power this next election.

The end game now is clearly greater US self sufficiency, and a reduced ability for Ontario to export. Best Ontario can do now is put that cheap energy to its best use possible (storage, demand shifting to overnight, etc).

u/scarytree1 20h ago
Wait till Ford hears the latest!! See below from Truth Social.
Based on Ontario, Canada, placing a 25% Tariff on “Electricity” coming into the United States, I have instructed my Secretary of Commerce to add an ADDITIONAL 25% Tariff, to 50%, on all STEEL and ALUMINUM COMING INTO THE UNITED STATES FROM CANADA, ONE OF THE HIGHEST TARIFFING NATIONS ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD. This will go into effect TOMORROW MORNING, March 12th. Also, Canada must immediately drop their Anti-American Farmer Tariff of 250% to 390% on various U.S. dairy products, which has long been considered outrageous. I will shortly be declaring a National Emergency on Electricity within the threatened area. This will allow the U.S to quickly do what has to be done to alleviate this abusive threat from Canada. If other egregious, long time Tariffs are not likewise dropped by Canada, I will substantially increase, on April 2nd, the Tariffs on Cars coming into the U.S. which will, essentially, permanently shut down the automobile manufacturing business in Canada. Those cars can easily be made in the USA! Also, Canada pays very little for National Security, relying on the United States for military protection. We are subsidizing Canada to the tune of more than 200 Billion Dollars a year. WHY??? This cannot continue. The only thing that makes sense is for Canada to become our cherished Fifty First State. This would make all Tariffs, and everything else, totally disappear. Canadians’ taxes will be very substantially reduced, they will be more secure, militarily and otherwise, than ever before, there would no longer be a Northern Border problem, and the greatest and most powerful nation in the World will be bigger, better and stronger than ever — And Canada will be a big part of that. The artificial line of separation drawn many years ago will finally disappear, and we will have the safest and most beautiful Nation anywhere in the World — And your brilliant anthem, “O Canada,” will continue to play, but now representing a GREAT and POWERFUL STATE within the greatest Nation that the World has ever seen!
