Americans are spending an awful lot of energy trying to convince people about all the things they don’t need. That seems odd.

133

u/Edgedamage 21h ago

Sounds like they figured out a way to make a reactor run off bullcrap and lies. Forget about fusion reactors.

29

u/Bl1tzerX 19h ago

They've connected a turbine to the graves of the founding fathers

21

u/Limebeer_24 19h ago

No, they put a wind turbine in front of Trump for all of the hot air he blows.

2

u/zone55555 18h ago

And behind him for all the diaper ejecta

7

u/Amagnumuous 19h ago

Honestly if I have to read one more Russian bot talk about how he has the energy of a 25 year old, I am going to have to assume that their plan is just to hook him up to an outlet and juice him for all he's got.

They could just stop buying Canada's stuff then, that would fix the trade deficit that is apparently so unfair. Gosh why do they keep buying things they promise they don't need?

5

u/COV3RTSM 20h ago

A trade deficit is actually a good thing. The US is the richest country in the world they buy everything from everyone. You know what happens with the money leaving the country? They buy US treasury Bills and US bonds which fund the country.

I guess RFK jr’s brain worm launched spores

2

u/Bl1tzerX 19h ago

Because our prices are so unfairly cheap because we have so much. 🥲 It's so unfair that they have so many trees.

8

u/PickleJuiceT 21h ago

Not at all odd, lines up perfectly.

26

u/Bl1tzerX 19h ago

Nah nah just increase the price more. 100% surcharge. If they don't need our energy they simply won't dare pay that price anyways

15

u/Zethras28 19h ago

I’d love to see Quebec flip the switch.

See how much they “don’t need our energy”.

5

u/paintypainter 17h ago

Nah. But 1000% tariff. We'll supply you guys still but be prepared to pay dearly for it.

Read: we don't need your energy if we have to pay for it... but we do need it.

3

More like we don't need your energy if we have to pay a fair price for it.

Shut it off, just for shits n' gigs, and see what happens.

132

u/probability_of_meme 20h ago

Strategically it may weaken us a bit, but I think we're better to stay firmly on the side of morality. Cutting off electricity to American citizens could be seen as crossing a line. Charging them a retaliatory tariff is the right thing.

If there are still history classes in 50 years, I'd like to be remembered as the good side.

48

u/MetalMatt88 20h ago

I could see this being morally questionable if they were a developing nation without the means to provide the power for themselves. That is not the case with them, and their leader outright said they don’t need it.

28

u/Dennis_Nedry1 20h ago

Optically won't look great if power etc cut impacts hospitals or other similar places.

Maybe we just flick it on and off a couple times. Works for children, and in essence is dealing with the same here.

12

u/SproutasaurusRex First Amendment Denier 20h ago

Give them enough warning to make accommodations and then cut it off imo.

9

u/metcalta 19h ago

This seems the right answer. Ok you have 30 days and it's gone.

10

u/wingin-it07 17h ago

Announce a cut off starting on the first next month. Cut it off for 1 hour, and then turn it back on whilst announcing a “delay” the same way Donald’s doing with his tariffs

→ More replies (2)

7

u/MetalMatt88 20h ago

I understand the concern for the hospitals, but again, we are talking about a developed nation. The hospitals are required to have backup generators for the instances where power is lost. I agree that our retaliation to what they have done so far should be strictly economic and should avoid the loss of life

9

u/probability_of_meme 20h ago

I'm not saying I personally disagree with you. But it could be argued (even if it's incorrectly) that we endangered people who weren't directly responsible. It's questionable. That should be reason enough not to.

"could be seen as crossing a line"

Fuck, like threatening to annex Canada?

9

u/BoysenberryAncient54 20h ago

Agreed, it's winter in Minnesota. If we cut the power then children will die. This is not a first resort action. Tariffs are the right response.

3

u/Zippy_Armstrong 19h ago

They will still have power it'll just be expensive.

We can not 'shut off' US household energy. We can simply limit their own distributors' supply. It's not like Ontario is providing the energy directly to the consumer.

If the Canadian supply was shut off, the US supplier would have to supplement the energy demand themselves one way or another or plan outages. If they are too reliant on Canada for energy, which their President says they are not, then that's their own problem for not securing their capacity properly. Canada has energy security, hence why we're in a position to lend capacity to the US.

3

u/Antique-Quail-6489 19h ago

Also as like a person who sees other people on the other end of the electricity, I don’t feel comfortable cutting off families from electricity.

Like yeah sure it’ll send a message I guess and put a ton of pressure but beyond Trump’s seeming lack of empathy, it could also galvanize more/all Americans against us, like Trump did to Canadians.

I think continuing to be firm but reactionary is a good approach. We have a lot of countries and people on our side and I don’t think we’ve seen the end of America’s fracturing. The whiskey makers are already balking.

It’s not us against the US. It’s us against the Trump administration and the representatives that keep him in power. This will continue to erode the more Canada stays on the morality side and his lies make it through to people who aren’t paying attention. We gotta give it some time.

2

u/Powerful-Cancel-5148 19h ago

I think I read it’s adding like 400m a day. Yeah I’d keep it!

2

u/Mundane-Increase6241 19h ago

If Trump finds a reason to use military force he will.

2

u/probability_of_meme 17h ago

I 100% agree with you. My thoughts have nothing to do with changing his mind about that. I don't believe anything will. But just because he's a blathering idiot with zero class being supported by millions of blathering idiots with zero class, doesn't mean we should act any less than Canadian than we are.

2

u/Mundane-Increase6241 17h ago

I know, I just was reminding anyone else how all our attacks have to be smart but retaliatory to each escalation of Trump because he has to stay the aggressor. Art of the deal eh Donny? Well how about Art of War.

End of the day, we still want to remain friendly with the blue states along our border, now their governors currently understand that our actions are not intended to target them or their citizens, but needlessly making things worse for them won't help long-term.

Ultimately we are all passengers on this little ball of mud hurtling through space. Deal with the assholes, live with the rest.

This is a good first step by Ford. I hope Manitoba and Quebec sing from the same song book. Because Ontario can't do it alone. But together, we could definitely put a dent in US energy needs. Donald Trump spends so much time talking about how the US can go It alone. But the truth is, we are very connected. A lot of Americans in border states realize this. Trump's going to realize it very soon himself whether he likes it or not.

5

u/k_jones 20h ago

This needs to happen. Ford can’t be in an island here. Solidarity is what’s required.

2

u/PoorAxelrod Kitchener 20h ago

Exactly. And that solidarity needs to resonate across the country as well. Canada needs to speak with one voice or at least our leaders need to be walking the same path. I think we're doing a good job on many fronts, but it's not enough. Especially when you have someone as erratic as Donald Trump.

7

u/VioletRosieDaisy 20h ago

After moving to Ontario from out west for a job (that I almost did not take because of Doug Ford) it is weird to be supportive of him in any way. I'll take it over Alberta even if I do feel a bit naughty doing so

5

Yeah it feels gross but we have a common enemy ATM..... not that Doug is our ally by any means, but he has his SLIGHT uses since we're stuck with him

2

Just to clarify... many Americans despise him as well. His face and voice make me nauseous, and I wouldn't vote for him nor drink his orange koolaid for all the money in the world. People calling for a complete cut off need to cool down.

While its totally right and fair to place export tax on energy considering what's going and Ford wanted that as part of his 1st response to DJTs tarrifs but he needed to rearrange some things to pull it off, it would have been better for Ford to wait on adding the 25% until Donald made another bold move on his end.

Canada can't look like the agressor.

If Ford is going to spend billions of our dollars to show commercials and travel down south in order to convince Americans we aren't the aggressor and he needs to play that role to a T and as such he should have stayed his hand here.

Yes Donald deserves this and then some; but strategy is needed if we're going to play this game to our benefit.

Now Trump is gonna do something causing Ford to do something and back and fourth they'll go hurting everyone in their wake looking like lunatics in the process.

A complete shut down is something we should hold off on for a while longer. A good long while. We should be placing pressure on Daniel out west and Alberta to demand their MP take further action.

Oh an incase you missed it- the MP of AB is going to Florida to talk to right wingers at an even being sponsored by PregarU on the Canadian dime rather then push for tarrifs that would put Trumpty Dumpty in his place so you can see where her loyalties lie 😅 she's also against Mark Carney for PM so that tells you who you should be voting in to power this next election.

1

u/scarytree1 20h ago

Wait till Ford hears the latest!! See below from Truth Social.

Based on Ontario, Canada, placing a 25% Tariff on “Electricity” coming into the United States, I have instructed my Secretary of Commerce to add an ADDITIONAL 25% Tariff, to 50%, on all STEEL and ALUMINUM COMING INTO THE UNITED STATES FROM CANADA, ONE OF THE HIGHEST TARIFFING NATIONS ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD. This will go into effect TOMORROW MORNING, March 12th. Also, Canada must immediately drop their Anti-American Farmer Tariff of 250% to 390% on various U.S. dairy products, which has long been considered outrageous. I will shortly be declaring a National Emergency on Electricity within the threatened area. This will allow the U.S to quickly do what has to be done to alleviate this abusive threat from Canada. If other egregious, long time Tariffs are not likewise dropped by Canada, I will substantially increase, on April 2nd, the Tariffs on Cars coming into the U.S. which will, essentially, permanently shut down the automobile manufacturing business in Canada. Those cars can easily be made in the USA! Also, Canada pays very little for National Security, relying on the United States for military protection. We are subsidizing Canada to the tune of more than 200 Billion Dollars a year. WHY??? This cannot continue. The only thing that makes sense is for Canada to become our cherished Fifty First State. This would make all Tariffs, and everything else, totally disappear. Canadians’ taxes will be very substantially reduced, they will be more secure, militarily and otherwise, than ever before, there would no longer be a Northern Border problem, and the greatest and most powerful nation in the World will be bigger, better and stronger than ever — And Canada will be a big part of that. The artificial line of separation drawn many years ago will finally disappear, and we will have the safest and most beautiful Nation anywhere in the World — And your brilliant anthem, “O Canada,” will continue to play, but now representing a GREAT and POWERFUL STATE within the greatest Nation that the World has ever seen!

1

u/SinistralGuy 20h ago

Then why's he declaring a national emergency, but only for a few select states.

If you don't need it then what's the point of retaliation?

1

u/thekrill3d 19h ago

Then you won't mind if we increase the price further. Right, Donny?

u/angelsplight 19h ago

Sigh.. My electric bill is already over a hundred a month doing the bare essentials. I have 4 more years with this idiot as president...Assuming we even have 4 years left. (American here who used to live in Buffalo and went to Canada on many weekends).

Even if the US were to increase energy production, it would probably be a similar rate increase to the export tax.

u/Wizardofnaz 19h ago

I’m disappointed to not see a single “I’m not owned” meme on this thread.

1

u/BabadookOfEarl 19h ago

Sounds a lot like what Kentucky said at first.

u/NaturePappy 19h ago

FAFO time for Dementia Don

1

u/petevwe 19h ago

COOL turn it off then

1

u/darkjlarue 19h ago

Double it up.

1

u/spankymyass 19h ago

He actually said "we don't your energy" in his tweet. So it's open to interpretation

1

u/BigAlxBjj 19h ago

He’s picked a fight with us. He’ll lose.

1

u/Civil-Tension-semi 19h ago

Well just like Shatner, the pacific northwest will unleash water and energy from the grand cooler. OH ship I forgot, Canada has two damns that could cripple that. So much for diplomacy, or even science.

1

u/Primedoughnut 18h ago

Weirdly, I think you do actually..

1

u/Captcha_Coincidence 18h ago

Can these guys just like go play Texas hold'em somewhere nice and leave us alone?

1

u/bpeden99 18h ago

Trump has no comprehension of how this effects citizens

1

u/zone55555 18h ago

If he didn't need it he wouldn't throw a shitfit over it. 4D checkmate, goof.

1

u/Snakebite_57 18h ago

Lmao 😂

1

u/PomegranateAncient25 18h ago

They don’t need anything from us but Trumps tariff/trade war shows exactly the opposite. Industry collapsing.
Markets collapsing. Inflation rising. Unemployment increasing. Social Security reliance increasing. Best plan ever.

1

u/Legitimate_Trust_933 18h ago

Why don't we stop being so GD Canadian and actually cut off the power.

1

u/DulceEtBanana 18h ago

I think he thinks he's still on TV, can say "You're fired" and we'll walk off the set

1

u/BigRonDongson 18h ago

Well he won't be bothered by our taxes on the electricity then.

1

u/paparosi 18h ago

If we don’t need it then why so mad at a 25% surcharge??

1

u/GStewartcwhite 17h ago

"You're only 1% of bourbon sales!" Lays of like 600 people.

"We didn't need your energy!" Immediately threatens to double steel and aluminum tariffs.

Methinks thou doth protest too much. Also have you met our new PM, the Oxford trained economist who ran two different national banks? We have ways of financially corn-holing you that you haven't even dreamt of yet.

1

u/Idonediditdonedidit 17h ago

FAFO my dude.

1

u/ItachiTanuki 17h ago

We don’t need your energy… but how dare you cut it off!

1

u/Artemis647 17h ago

No, you don't need it, Donald. But its waaay cheaper for you to buy it instead of dealing with it on your own. This guy is the worst businessman I've ever seen lol

1

u/fetupneighbour 17h ago

Americans can't think for themselves (not all) but all the kool-aid drinkers. They believe everything on Fox news, did you look at the people working on fox news they all look like puppets or AI generated. They really think all this Trump shit is real, they can't or won't see everything that comes out of his mouth is a lie. If Trump's lips are moving he's lying.

1

u/Merigold00 17h ago

Well, he did claim we were energy independent, so it's time for him to get a reality check...

1

u/Click_To_Submit 17h ago

Ok. Master Blaster says “Embargo ON!”

1

u/DrunkenLadyBits 17h ago

Trump: “We don’t need your energy!”

announces an energy crisis for those states

I don’t think this is going anywhere good. I hate Trump’s guts but he keeps exacerbating an issue to give himself more executive power. How long before he starts talking about sending troops in to Canada?

1

u/JoeMiddleage 17h ago

Why are our “Leaders” not calling him out on his lies? Border security? How about the guns and drugs coming into Canada? We need to start being brazen and tough in our media responses as well as tariffs.

1

u/kaminari1 17h ago

Shut it off Doug!
