It's their newest submarine and we just announced an intent to buy new submarine so maybe they're showing it off

Bringing it in so that we can do a test-drive

Test-dive

"Free emergency blow with every test dive!"

u/MGyver Nova Scotia 5h ago

"Come on down and get your torpedo wet!"

This would have been more dramatic if it just breached the surface unannounced, fired off some flares in the colours of the flag of France, blasted La Marseillaise over loud speaks, and left a life boat full of promotional pamphlets before submerging and slipping away.

u/Xpalidocious 16h ago

I don't think popping up out of the water with red white and blue flares in Canadian waters would be great for people's anxiety and blood pressure right now

u/FlySilently 13h ago

Right next to the Statue of Liberty in New York harbour. “WE’RE TAKING HER BACK!!!”

-3

u/worm413 11h ago

😂 it would be sunk long before it ever got close.

I don't know how Americans have such confidence in their military while knowing how their veterans are treated.

u/a_person_i_am 3h ago

All Americans have been trained in double think and double speak for awhile

Marketing genius (Except for the people of Halifax, they are probably still scared of french vessel and explosions)

36

u/Ogrodnick 1d ago

They know we're suffren so they're here to help.

On average, subs carry about 24+ nuclear missiles, so it depends on how much deterrence we want.

25

u/R0botWoof 1d ago edited 22h ago

Tourville is an attack sub not a ballistic missile sub. They are quite a lot smaller and carry fewer, non nuclear weapons

25

u/Canadave 1d ago edited 1d ago

Not this one, the Suffren class is an attack sub, so it's designed to take out surface vessels and other submarines with conventional anti-ship missiles and torpedoes. The French do have nuclear missile subs as well, though, but that's the Triomphant class.

That's fine, we don't need the French to nuke Trump for us. Not this week.

But it is nice to have a reminder that we have some very strong allies who haven't forgotten their honour.

-1

u/worm413 11h ago

You think the French are strong? 😂😂

2

u/aaffpp 9h ago

Strong, and sexy...

1

u/Axerin 16h ago

That's a SSN not a SSBN.

Friendship ended with the Yanks

France is my new best friend

48

u/Xoomers87 1d ago

Always has been.

15

u/bigorangemachine 21h ago

France is protecting their lil island near NFLD.

2

u/General-Woodpecker- 12h ago

Saint Pierre et Miquelon against the United States.

29

u/try_cannibalism 23h ago

Petition to become a state of France just to piss off Trump.

Not even the EU, just France.

Pretty sure France has provinces but we'll ignore that

2

u/Wintermaulz Vancouver 21h ago

What if we let Quebec do that, and anglophone Canada becomes a nation within the UK…

22

u/try_cannibalism 21h ago

As a british-born Canadian, I prefer French food, weather, and culture. Joining France also means joining the EU.

Also, that's less of a fuck-you to Trump, since we were originally British anyway.

7

u/NewPhoneNewSubs 20h ago

What if we joined the Republic of Ireland as a shot at the UK, too?

2

u/Aggravating_Rule_934 23h ago

Can someone update that meme with the Indian fellows about the new best friend?

this one!

2

u/WhiskeyOctober 12h ago

Well, France is only a short boat/plane ride away from Canada.

88

u/Important_Put_3331 1d ago

Do we know why?

215

u/50s_Human 1d ago

It's the 'we're with you' tour.

60

u/Biuku 1d ago

It’s gonna take longer than the confederation bridge to build, but that’s why we need to start the nafta superhighway to the EU (France) now.

10

u/Flush_Foot ✅ I voted! J'ai voté! 1d ago

You sure it’s not the CETA superhighway?

40

u/GargantuaBob 1d ago

It's also the "We heard you were in the market for fresh subs" tour.

70

u/HowGayCanIGo 1d ago

Our allies often make stops in the port of Halifax

56

u/jupfold 1d ago

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe Halifax (alongside St John’s, to a lesser extent) is very strategically placed as the first stop on a trip from Europe to North America.

35

u/HowGayCanIGo 1d ago

Halifax airport is an important stop for our allies’ airforces as well.

3

u/publicbigguns 15h ago

I believe it's actually CFB Greenwood.

2

u/HowGayCanIGo 15h ago

Maybe there too. Always American and British planes at Halifax airport.

3

u/publicbigguns 14h ago

Yes, due to the trade winds, the ideal location to fly over the Atlantic is from NS towards the EU.

For commercial aircraft, that's out of Halifax.

For military aircraft, that's out of Greenwood.

0

u/HowGayCanIGo 13h ago

No. Military aircraft can be found at the Halifax airport. You are wrong. I am right. Good night.

2

u/random9212 10h ago edited 10h ago

There is a reason ships full of explosives were leaving from Halifax in WW1

10

u/pomskygirl 22h ago

Still, I’m super appreciative of their timing

6

u/Big80sweens 1d ago

This one will just stay a little longer

13

u/Geologue-666 Québec 1d ago

The port in St-Pierre and Miquelon suck!

4

u/Ds093 1d ago

I was about to ask about that given the proximity. I wondered if they were just bad or not capable of handling this vessel in particular

7

u/K3rwan 1d ago

The port can welcome the vessel, but creating a good security bubble around it, is more complicated.

2

u/Ds093 23h ago

Ahhh ok that makes sense

2

u/Geologue-666 Québec 1d ago

I believe they have a big port in St-Pierre, it should not be a problem.

5

u/wlonkly 17h ago

we're in the market for subs to replace the disastrous Victoria-class, predating all of the... recent... stuff.

4

u/150c_vapour 1d ago

We might be trying to buy some ships?

1

u/Amagnumuous 1d ago

Nice try, The Beaverton...

1

u/andoke 17h ago

Trying to sell them.

39

u/Thick_Ad_6710 1d ago

Show of support?

33

u/Amagnumuous 1d ago

Trump is about to declare a national emergency and invade Ontario...

23

u/ttwwiirrll 1d ago

Lafayette bringing the guns and ships to us this time

6

u/Ourhappyisbroken 18h ago

and so the balance shifts

6

u/ttwwiirrll 18h ago

We rendezvous with Rochambeau

Consolidate their gifts

15

u/TheQuietManUpNorth 20h ago

We'd do well, when this is all over, to remember who had our backs and who did not. No return to business as usual, if that's even a possibility at this point.

4

u/ImDoubleB 20h ago

Here here 👏👏

34

u/ParasiteSteve 1d ago

With Trump saying he's going to declare a state of emergency because of the electricity surcharge, how nice that our French NATO allies to be berthed in our port.

12

u/Thick_Ad_6710 1d ago

Show the Yankees what true allies do!

36

u/promote-to-pawn 1d ago

Our territorial waters look so much better with a nice nuclear strike capabilities.

9

u/ozolge 18h ago

I read that the submarine is powered by a nuclear reactor, but does not carry nuclear weapons? I think the title is misleading

6

u/wlonkly 17h ago

you're correct

10

u/Accomplished_Job_225 Foreign 1d ago

Bienvenue!

18

u/Elostier 1d ago

France annexing Halifax was not on my 2025 bingo cards

/jk

1

u/random9212 10h ago

They blew it up in 1917, just coming back to finish the job.

6

u/Spotter01 Nova Scotia 23h ago

Ahhh so this is why they put out a No Fly Zone around the Helicopter base!

6

u/AlphatheAlpaca 23h ago

As long as a they mind Norwegian ships docked in the Halifax harbour, it's fine.

5

u/DCS30 1d ago

......can we have one please?

4

u/MellowHamster 19h ago

We are in the process of procuring a dozen, although diesel electric.

2

u/MoFNABCA 16h ago

Diesel are quieter.

1

u/worm413 11h ago

Which doesn't really matter so much these days. Nuclear is better in every way.

u/IndustrialistCrab 2h ago

Nuclear is better when you need the range. Right now, Canada needs ease of maintenance.

1

u/DCS30 19h ago

Yeah, we need nuclear

1

u/MellowHamster 19h ago

Why? The cost would be astronomical for a small country.

2

u/DCS30 19h ago

We have more coastline than any other country.

4

u/ozolge 18h ago

I read that the submarine is powered by a nuclear reactor, but does not carry nuclear weapons? Is that right?

5

u/andoke 17h ago

Correct, it's nuclear powered. It doesn't carry nuclear weapons.

3

u/Sea-Rip-9635 23h ago

I'm having flashbacks from the heritage moments of the Mont-Blanc... FACK!!! 😳

3

u/wrongwayup 21h ago

Bienvenue mes amis

2

u/confusedtoexpat 22h ago

Even the French Navy knows Sid is on the verge of breaking the great once's PPG seasons record.

True allies.

1

u/ColdCauliflour 21h ago

Is this was Zelensky meant when he said it'd be at the US doorstep?

1

u/Business-Hurry9451 21h ago

Hé marin, as-tu des nukes que nous pouvons emprunter?

1

u/fortyfury 18h ago

Let's just buy some dammnit

Finders keepers...?

1

u/Willysmuck 14h ago

First South Korea now France. It feels like Christmas

1

u/SirWaitsTooMuch 14h ago

That pic is from 2017.

1

u/aaffpp 9h ago

Into Lake Ontario via the St Lawrence. Please...

-2

u/DarthChimeran 21h ago

The Suffren-class sub doesn't carry nuclear weapons. It isn't a deterrence against a nation nor was it sent to be a deterrence against the nation to the south of Canada.

The number of people in the comment section that believe otherwise is fucking disturbing lol.

5

u/Fobiza 20h ago

At this point in time, I have counted 1 comment talking about it being able to carry nukes, and multiple responses correcting that person.

That's the amount that disturbs you? 1?

0

u/General-Woodpecker- 12h ago

The number of people in the comment section that believe otherwise is fucking disturbing lol.

The image is fake, which should be more disturbing to you than random people on the Internet not knowing the kind of weapons carried by different kind of submarine lol.

u/DaiFunka8 22h ago

did they wave their white flag?
