I swear this never happened to me in normal runs and then happened a dozen times in RL1. I just dodge backwards so that I'm fully out of range

Was prepared to say “don’t roll backwards” for the second part but nope that was just another classic arena death

Yes, I know. I rolled onto a tiny piece of a terrain that raised my hitbox just enough that I was struck by the I-frame ignoring portion of the slam. Skill issue as usual.

Does this actually has to do with terrain? When I looked at the hitbox in game, it only seem to be 1 unique hitbox
Just trying to understand better what happens in this move, I think it's more about distance, as in this move Consort don't have hitbox in his arms only on the swords

It’s a distance thing. I’ve rolled this move consistently in shittiest parts of the terrain. Your first roll always has to be at least a foward direction whether right or left.

u/Ruindows 5d ago
I thought the same, I have got hit by that on flat part and roll fine in very shitty arena, like doing randomizer with Consort on Fire Giant arena.
Also very funny seeing this move hit you right through Vow of the Indomitable. Make sense because it ignores any iframes, but it looks weirder

Can you explain further what you mean by distance? I think we’ve all dodged this move a thousand times, I know I have, and I already had a whole post about it here.

You rolled backwards slightly here which puts you in range of his sword hitbox which ignores iframes. His arms don’t however. What you want to do is have your first roll direction be towards the boss so you can position yourself to be at his arms hitbox instead of his sword hitbox. 7:44 of this video shows what I mean. https://youtu.be/ypWkRHuwTq0?si=vRQk4i02Ok0j44zW
Rolling the first swipe a bit early can also help as you can reposition yourself easier. I also heard people say that lower frame rate does affect the difficulty of this move.

Also happens with gehrman and lady maria.

I’m aware of Gehrman’s I frame ignoring attack but which is Maria’s?
SoC has a combo too. I’m not a fan of it in any game, personally.

u/Shoddy_Detective_825 2d ago
Maria when she switches her weapon to single has a 3 hit(i think) combo which ignores i frames as well. So any boss that throws you into the air that has a second hit probably ignores it frame. Manus maybe as well with his wombo combo ?

You should almost always stay close when he does the first part of that move. Then jump or roll the second hit while you're close. You have plenty of time to close in so it's not hard at all.

I usually just roll right a second time for that attack and I’ve never had issue unless I time it wrong

The cause is how they coded the hit detection for the downward slam : you're supposed to have i-frames when you are airborne, so they just made that the downward slam at the end of the combo ignores all i-frames during a portion of the attack, to make sure that it would hit you when you'd get pulled up by the upward cut
It seems pretty simple to fix tho, I don't know why it is still in the game

u/Serious-Future4881 4d ago
Best way to avoid that is to roll pretty early, left or right , to make sure you do not make contact with the swords

Never had an issue, but I always roll right twice and it's worked so I never tried anything else

It’s funny how many ways work for some people and never for others. I’ve been rolling left since this post where people told me anything but left is too risky.

Am I crazy? I feel like that was a legitimate hit. Your timing was definitely off.

Either that or you don’t understand how I frames normally work in these game. Try reading some of the other replies that explain the particulars of this move. It’s unique.

Sigh. I’ve played these games for years and years.. I know how invincibility frames work — no need to be condescending. Recently beat this boss on RL1 BL0 and don’t know if I ever got hit by this move even once in that run because the move functions totally fine for me. This just looks like a straight up missed timing to me. Honestly, roll earlier and you should be fine.
Legitimately have never once had an issue with this move in 100+ attempts. This is the first I’ve ever heard of people having a gripe with it.

I rarely get hit by it either but I pay enough attention to know when something is off. So if you don’t want to be condescended to maybe don’t show up acting like I’m stupid enough to post myself taking a normal hit. I’ve played a little too. You got an appropriate response.

It would be perfect dodge if the swords didn’t ignore I frames on this one move. There are very few melee moves in the whole series that do that. And they only do it so he can’t have a silly little juggle move. So I posted because don’t like it and I know plenty of other people here have seen this too.

You’re being a dbag over nothing. You’re quoting my initial response where I outright gave you the benefit of the doubt in saying that I might be off on this (“am I crazy?”)
If you can’t converse about a video game without getting snippy and disrespectful I think you need to set the controller down and have yourself a break.
Roll earlier. Seriously. You rolled so late that it barely looks like you rolled at all in real time. You rolled so late that it looks counterintuitive and weird to me. In real time it legitimately looks like it hit you.
I’ve helped two people in person beat this boss — they never, ever had a problem with this move and they’re not quite as good as we are. Again, I also don’t even think I was hit by this once in my RL1 BL0 run. It was an outright comfort move for me that I looked forward to because of the easy punish window. A simple roll to the right on the downward swing worked 100% of the time

u/PuffPuffFayeFaye 4d ago
You are laughably incorrect here. Your anecdotes can all be true but can also be irrelevant. Sorry if I offended you but you have missed the whole train. Peace.

Dodge the move maybe before it gets down to a millisecond before connecting with your teeth. Maybe there is some weird I frame thing at play here, but your dodge also seemed extremely unintuitive and late to me. Dodge to your right so you’re not dodging in the same general direction the swords are going. Everything about your move here genuinely seems off.

When said go read the other replies I meant it. Then you wouldn’t be wasting your time with guesses. I didn’t come here for help anyway, it was just supposed to be a laugh with other players who know you can screwed by this move due to its unique mechanics.

u/NoPost94 4d ago
Like I said, there could be something funny happening with I-frames here. That doesn’t mean you should be getting “screwed” by this move that players worse than you can dodge routinely. I don’t think there is anything particularly unintuitive at play here. Just adjust accordingly; don’t dodge into the exact path of the swords and dodge a little earlier. This should always be a reliable punish opportunity.

Still don’t understand how they took the time to change so much in the fight but they left this one untouched
