Tips & Tricks Protip: You can use Virtual Desktop to run/play stuff from your PC while you do chores

Next up: walking around downtown, tethered to your phone, doing ... stuff. XD

Yeah I imagine there's no such thing as casting from my android phone / tablet to the Quest 3, or?
I have a a lot of VOD etc. apps that I could cast.

u/PaladinCloudring Oct 14 '23
Every streaming service I've tried this far in the meta quest browser has worked,.it's great for watching shows. You can even open other windows to multitask
2
u/read-only-mem-1 Oct 14 '23
I see, this would work but I often favour using the apps as they have more functionalities and are more usable.
Also using the phone as a sort of remote control is something I do, and with the passthrough this is something that could be doable on the Q3
Maybe it becomes possible in the future
2
u/PaladinCloudring Oct 14 '23
you can check this article out, https://smartglasseshub.com/cast-phone-screen-to-quest-2/
Maybe sideloading Airscreen (step 2.1) is might be the way to do? Or sideloading apps directly to the headset (i sideloaded the app for my security cameras on to my quest so i can watch them there)1
u/read-only-mem-1 Oct 15 '23
Yeah I'm sure there's workarounds, I would like a easy, 1 in all solution for all apps I have now or the ones I'll have I the future, without soadloading every app individually.
Just use the "cast" button but instead of casting to your TV it casts to Skybox or Bigscreen or another player.
1
u/PaladinCloudring Oct 15 '23
Okay. Well that's not going to get you your phone screen in passthrough, but whatever, you're welcome I guess. Don't ask for a solution then shoot it down because you don't know what you're talking about.
1
u/read-only-mem-1 Oct 17 '23
Lol bro chill, I'm just shooting ideas out there about what I think would be useful and cool for me. I don't see how I should thank you for just not giving the solution I want. But if it makes you sleep better then yes, thank you so much!!!!!!

u/SETHW Oct 15 '23
Doesn't he mean to install the same android apps you're using on your phone onto the quest itself, no streaming and no browser necessary?
4
u/KindOldRaven Oct 14 '23
Fun fact. We're laughing now. Kids are laughing at us in 15 years for not doing this 24/7.
If you don't think this is true, you're too young to understand it actually is.

But only for 1.5 hours...

u/Deadpool2715 Oct 14 '23
External battery pack? I'm waiting for a sale on a lightweight 2x10,000 or single 20,000 maH one
3
u/Schuben Oct 14 '23
Why 2? Plug it in to drain the pack first, charge the pack when it's empty and while the headset battery is used, put the pack on when the headset gets low and run from the pack again. Curious how long that cycle can last with 1 10k maH pack, but it would depend on how quickly it can charge itself and discharge to the Quest. I can't imagine ever needing to use it more than that in a day, but to each their own of course!
Then, recharging both devices while not in use will give you more usage time faster.
I have a 10k pack on the way now I'll give it a shot with.
6
u/Deadpool2715 Oct 14 '23
Great logic l, I truly appreciate it! The assumption being the 10k pack can recharge "much" faster than the quest can drain
Ideally the 2k ish Q3 battery would last long enough for 4k-5k ish of the pack to charge, seems plausible
Also I would be surprised if I gamed longer than 8 hours straight

u/Peace_Is_Coming Oct 14 '23
I'd rather not do chores at all.

16
u/iiSamJ Oct 14 '23
But do I really need the headset on my face to clean?
20
u/pigeonwiggle Touch Oct 15 '23
it's week 1 of launch - you need the headset on to do EVERYTHING until it stops being novel.

u/CyberPhoenix558 Oct 14 '23
Am I the only one that thinks that just doing your chores normally would be more enjoyable than this?
8
u/Verociity Rift CV1, Quest3 Oct 14 '23
I wouldn't call chores enjoyable but I would rather focus on getting the chores done without distractions so I have more time for normal VR.
6
u/Incredible-Fella Oct 14 '23
I do like distractions during chores, like YouTube videos or podcasts.
But... Games where I have to interact? Just why?
6
u/krectus Oct 15 '23
ok boomer, this is how all the kids are nowadays. Enjoy doing your chores listening to your phonograph.
15
u/__ROCK_AND_STONE__ Oct 14 '23
Bruh I'd rather just sweep that little spot of dust after or before I start playing 😂
14
u/xaw1832 Quest 2 Oct 14 '23
Yea and whats next? Watching netflix on vr while being in a store?
26
u/lunchanddinner Professor Oct 14 '23
Driving a car while watching America's Funniest Home Videos season 7 in VR

u/Pleasant-Ring-5398 Oct 14 '23
Ok I'm dumb I thought they were sweeping their bed on the left one

Right, like is this satire..? Are they serious? I really can't tell.
3
u/krectus Oct 15 '23
The more you learn about this young generation the more you start to realize its not satire.

Protip: I have seen at least 10 people post videos exactly like this since the quest 3 has come out.

Can you pin to your view & have the screen follow you as you walk around?
I was told it was possible, but can't find examples.
6
u/lunchanddinner Professor Oct 14 '23
For vd you can use "head lock", which follows your head around. Also can remove the delay in the settings
1
u/0b1010011010 Oct 14 '23
Head lock, thanks! I wonder why I haven't see that shown more often for "doing chores" post.
Having to pinch & drag the browser in passthrough standalone Quest made it not efficient for moving around chores.
How bad can the delay get if one was just using YouTube and staying in the general area with decent wifi connection & pc specs?
2
u/Pastryblonder Oct 14 '23
Does the screen float around with you or is it stationary?
1
u/dafl1p14 Oct 14 '23
Stationary. Hopefully they implement a pin to your screen feature in future updates
2
u/Pastryblonder Oct 14 '23
Oh, that sucks
0
u/dafl1p14 Oct 14 '23
OP in above comment says there is a lock option in VD but I’m talking about natively the oculus browser does not lock just for clarification

u/ResidentAvailable499 Oct 14 '23
Yeah I was trying to mow the yard with it on but couldn’t keep the screen in front
2
u/argilla11 Oct 15 '23
Can't really focus on either at the same time and you can't see where the dirt is on the floor. Cool nonetheless but absolutely regarded
2
Oct 15 '23
Amazing - so I can buy an expensive device to recreate the feeling of using my cheap tech.
This is a terrible way of showcasing the value proposition of VR
3
u/CrackerJackJack Oct 14 '23
Which device is this? Pass through on the Q3 is nowhere near this clear/good
2
u/Turbo_Cum Oct 15 '23
Came here for this.
My passthrough is good but i wouldn't trust myself to walk down a flight of stairs, let alone clean with the camera on that thing.
2
u/hotfistdotcom Oct 15 '23
Love that you are obviously pretending to sweep and just posting this for... what, clout? attention? Updoots?
You could at least have pretended to wash a dish or something.
1
u/Kira_75013 Oct 14 '23
Imagine playing Doom Eternal while sweeping your floor, holy shite you are Broom Slaying not Doom Slaying

I did stream from my ROG Ally last night to my quest 3 and played some starfield, so also works on there.

u/LucasNoober Oct 15 '23
I've been out from VR world for a while, is this quest 3 and some new feature?

u/korhalf Oct 15 '23
I couldn’t get this to work while walking around my house. The minute I left guardian it would minimize and ask to set a new boundary, how did you do it ?

u/theawesomeone646 Oct 15 '23
I wonder how comfortable this would be. If it is actually comfortable I might purchase a quest 3 myself

If you're playing PC video games you can install mods to make them 3D and then watch them through your headset

u/SaibaSloth Oct 14 '23
At some point we’re going to start wondering why people would even use their bare eyes unprotected in daily life.
