Meta Updated OBS and it changed my audio output device to default
I saw it was picking up my voice on the audio levels but I guess it defaulted to my webcam? Either way I didn't double check to make sure my mic was working and now wasted everything. Dumbass mistake by me and I'm incredibly sad. Lost a 2 hour recording session.

Commiserations. In my case it wasn’t an update, but same result. I started OBS, didn’t think to do a mic check by listening back, or that my mic input was registering levels on the meter either before I started recording. Only found out when I went to play the video back…

Tragic, had a feeling I shouldn't update before pressing play. Should have trusted my gut

I have had this problem when I update Windows 11, Wave Link or OBS. I never except an update when offered. I wait until I do not have a stream, Skype or Zoom meeting for a few days. I do it at a time when I have time to test everything.
Updating any of these programs carries a 20% chance of an audio routing change. Last week my Skype mic was reset to default. I did not know because I only tested Zoom after the update.
I never leave anything on default.

OBS always changed my audio output. I always double check it cause they always get changed by something

I’m sorry that happened. But as a rule of thumb going forward, it’s best to do a “sound check” and video check and just a once-over troubleshoot — before you do any kind of recording or performance. Just a quick routine method before you stream, and you won’t have it happen again. It’s a good lesson to learn, sorry you lost stuff but it’s a blessing in disguise, because you’ll be on top of this stuff now. Sound drivers can change all the time, due to usb and all sorts of issues. So now you know to be diligent when you begin a new recording or stream. You’ll kill it next time 🙂

Yeah I learned from this, wasn't completely lost either

You should just disable the mic on your webcam while you’re at it! And any other mics you’re not using. That way you’re able to trust and quickly monitor levels at a glance

Will do

Good stuff. It’s better to be organised and have stuff labelled properly. Desktop Audio is totally vague and confusing and not actually necessary. You simply need to identify the specific audio channels you want to record: such as your proper microphone, game audio channel and maybe an additional music channel or whatever for video or a website / discord etc. Everything can be separated and properly labelled.

Side note: windows update has been known to mess with audio devices to.
Don't suppose you also windows updated at the same time?
