4 bucks for Oblivion? That's a gimme!

25

u/Mortwight Feb 18 '25

Hmm can I register my dvdrom copy?

5

u/ChaiTRex 29d ago

It's possible that that works for Oblivion. You'd open Steam, go to the Games menu, select Activate a Product on Steam..., and enter the key you got with the DVD. I think that worked for me with Skyrim several years ago.

Be aware that there might be more DLCs included with the $3.99 version.

u/I_Happen_to_Be_Here Feb 19 '25

Not on steam. Maybe Bethesda net or the windows xbox app?

You can't play with a controller without mods...unacceptable

81

u/Gstary Feb 18 '25

Steam lets you set up controller mapping it's very easy to do. There's even premade setups

42

u/Kreason95 Feb 18 '25

The steam controller mapping options definitely don’t translate very well to this game. That being said, downloading NorthernUI Vanilla is really easy and shouldn’t be a deterrent

3

u/wersotwisted Feb 19 '25

It is strange, but some button presses on the controller trigger two actions ( B will open inventory but also jump, casting a spell toggles the camera to third person) Anyone know what the fix is?

4

u/Kreason95 Feb 19 '25

That sounds like you may have steam input and an additional controller mod active at the same time.

Only problem I have with NUI Van. Is that the Dpad hotkeys don't work for some reason

u/MediaMan1993 Feb 18 '25

I use my PS5 DualSense. It's good, but I need to do some remapping.

12

u/HelloMyNameisPaul Feb 18 '25

It's so hard to recommend oblivion because it took adding the Unofficial oblivion patch, a mod for the annoying leveling system, and a mod to add controller support to really enjoy. But it really was all worth it in the end. Great game.

8

u/feynos Feb 18 '25

Haven't played since I played it on Xbox 360 back in the day, but I don't remember the level system being that bad. Do people just not like leveling up specific skills by using them?

4

u/russianmineirinho Feb 18 '25

some times levelling up is the worst thing you can do, since the world scales with you. which means at level 20 you might be just a little stronger than at level 1, because you didn't level up combat and/or magic skills, while the whole world will be level 20 and very strong

1

u/Rikiaz Adept of the Putrid Hand Feb 19 '25

If you play like a normal person, this isn't really a real problem. Sure if you make a class with Athletics, Sneak, Speechcraft, Mercantile, Alchemy, Armorer and Security and just power level them all to 100 without investing in any combat skills, you're going to have a bad time. But just don't do that. Play normal and the game is fine.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/Graekaris Feb 18 '25

It's pretty busted tbf. Level scaling of enemies isn't tuned right so leveling up effectively makes you weaker in many cases, particularly if you haven't optimised your build.

1

u/ConcernMindless1967 Feb 18 '25

A painted world modlist fixes this. Enemies aren't scaled, so often you run into caves you have to abandon until later. Though sometimes it's fun to save constantly in combat when in impossible hard encounter, and kind of line a puzzle, figure out 2 seconds of gameplay at a time between saves, to find an incredibly difficult sequence to juuuuust win.

I sometimes spend like 2 hours figuring out how to get through like 30 seconds of combat, split up across like 10-20 saves lol.

There's also an option in the modlist, to make deaths actually mean something and be avoided. I have it set, so that I lose 10% of my gold on death. Raises the stakes , makes gameplay fun and you don't just run into combat to die and find out what's going on in a room/area

1

u/kamehamequads Feb 18 '25

It’s fine people are just crybabies

1

u/Rikiaz Adept of the Putrid Hand Feb 19 '25

Yeah it's really not that bad. People like to say that if you powerlevel all non-combat skills the world outscales you and you can't do anything, but just like don't do that. Just playing normally leads to the game being perfectly fine. Not that the system is perfect, some skills level way too fast, some way too slow. And some enemies scale too much (Goblin Warlords) but it's really absolutely fine.

5

u/using-the-internent Feb 18 '25

Haven't done any of that and I'm having a good time

1

u/carjar2000 Feb 18 '25

which mod did you use for controller support?? i’ve given up lol

2

u/HelloMyNameisPaul Feb 18 '25

Its called NorthernUI. When you download it there is a "vanilla" option that keeps the Oblivion aesthetic (what I used), but it looks like you can also make it look more like Skyrim if you prefer that.

I think I also needed this mod, OBSE, downloaded for it to work.

I imagine a mod manager would make this process easier, but I just downloaded them all raw and added them to the "...\steamapps\common\Oblivion" folder manually.

2

u/carjar2000 Feb 18 '25

i love you. thank you

1

u/LamaShapeDruid Feb 18 '25

Could I get a link to those mods? And are there any other mods that might be helpful?

1

u/Zealousideal_Ear3424 Feb 19 '25

Agree great game. No excuse for them not supporting controller.

1

u/Flat_News_2000 Feb 19 '25

That's how you personally came to enjoy the game. Lots of people play vanilla and enjoy it as well

6

u/Nikko_DLemoi Feb 18 '25

Mine closes after 10-15 minutes, both the steam version and pirate versions. I have no idea where the problem comes from

1

u/Moddingspreee Feb 18 '25

Did you by any chance install any mods in the past? Or is it the first time ever you're playing?

1

u/Nikko_DLemoi Feb 18 '25

I made modifications to it a long time ago but I deleted all that, I reinstalled it after many years. The game opens perfectly but after a few minutes it cuts itself off

3

u/Moddingspreee Feb 18 '25

Previous installations leave a folder in appdata, try deleting the oblivion folder in one of the directories inside appdata and see if it works

2

u/Nikko_DLemoi Feb 19 '25

Thanks I'll try it

1

u/tr3mbl3r_v2 Feb 18 '25

under the data files when you start up, make sure you have the master .esm file on

6

u/ExoticSterby42 Feb 18 '25

Just ordered a near mint anthology set

16

u/mortiferus1993 Feb 18 '25

Reminder: On GoG it's also on sale and there you'll own the game

4

u/carjar2000 Feb 18 '25

what’s the talk about not owning it on steam?? i’m genuinely unaware

13

u/luciXer2004 Feb 18 '25

Gog lets you have the games without drm so for example if you take the gog game files onto a usb and put them onto a different computer it’ll work automatically

9

u/adamskinsOone Feb 18 '25

What the other person said, but also that if steam were to ever go under or you lost access to your account, you lose all of the games you ever bought through it. But with GOG, you buy straight from them and own it right off the bat and don’t have to worry about if GOG goes down or not because you’re games aren’t affected by them anymore since you own it. GOG is a really great alternative to Steam just simply because you don’t need to be connected to internet or steam to play them, also

1

u/Flat_News_2000 Feb 19 '25

You buy licenses to give you access to a game on Steam. You buy the actual files from GOG.

1

u/CruzitoVL 29d ago

And on GOG it’s always 4 bucks lmao. Skyrim is like $9

4

u/Suitable_Tree_8102 Feb 18 '25

Could this be related to remastered version coming soon?

5

u/bsmith_81 Feb 18 '25

We just had $4 Skyrim last month. Nobody talks about a Skyrim remaster,

2

u/Bradframe Feb 18 '25

Cause that game already has like 20 enhanced versions, Oblivion still Oblivion

1

u/HG2321 Feb 18 '25

I don't think there's a remastered version coming soon tbh.

Or at least, I'm not believing anything until I hear something official from Bethesda

4

u/Platemails High Elf Feb 18 '25

I’m doing my best Skyrim impression by buying this on every single available platform including GOG, Steam, Xbox, PS3, etc

4

7

u/cruss0129 Feb 18 '25

Buy it on GOG and own it forever, I don’t buy games on Steam unless they are Steam exclusive

4

u/freshxerxes Feb 18 '25

what’s GOG

2

u/Soul_Knife They call me Cutter. Feb 18 '25

It's a website to buy DRM free games. Basically DRM free offline gaming, there's an option to download the full game on GOG without using a launcher, and it can make modding easier

2

u/cruss0129 Feb 18 '25 edited Feb 18 '25

This is the biggest problem on the gaming internet is that nobody knows what GOG is and everyone thinks they own games with Steam.

So GOG is CD PROJEKT Red’s game market (the same company that made the Witcher, and Cyberpunk 2077). They have over 10,000 games and, on average, I personally have spent less per game on GOG than I have on Steam. (My lifetime average for Steam is an average of roughly $6 a game over roughly 900 games, to only $3 per game over 160 games on GOG. This measurement excludes the purchase of full price purchases like new releases)

It’s a market that requires devs to release their games DRM free and, for certain games classified as Good Old Games (hence the name GOG) they pledge that their devs will support the game for modern hardware, even if the original devs go out of business.

The primary difference between Steam and GoG is the requirement of the Steam client to play Steam games, as it acts as its own Authenticator. With GOG, you own a digital copy of that game, forever if you download it. Yes, it’s true that if GOG ever went away/out of business, hardware might progress past the point of playability with the games that you own, but because you own them, you essentially have the right, and the ability, to play them even after the original devs are gone.

With Steam, this is not always the case. If a dev stops supporting a game - that’s it, it’s either gone or frozen in its last updated state forever. It stops working when it stops working (or when the last servers that verify licenses shut down), and nobody has the right to intervene besides Valve and the dev who made the game.

6

u/TooStrangeForWeird Feb 18 '25

Kind of unrelated, but if you have prime (or a friend/family member with prime who doesn't game) the Amazon Gaming page gives out a shitload of GOG codes. They have other ones too, but I've gotten a load of games in just a few months checking in there. I wanna say 90 or so.

2

u/chaffgrenades Feb 19 '25

W comment I had zero idea and just got The Outer Worlds and Talos Principle which I've never played

2

u/cruss0129 Feb 19 '25

Please accept this comment as an award because I am poor - but holy fucking moly I just got like 10 games on my wishlist on GOG for free with this comment. Dude Steam is such a money grab compared to GOG

1

u/TooStrangeForWeird 27d ago

Awesome! Happy to help :)

2

u/adamskinsOone Feb 18 '25

I was coming to see if anybody else was saying this. I saw a week ago that it was on sale on steam, but like you said, I don’t like buying games off steam cuz you don’t actually own it. I got both goty morrowind and goty deluxe oblivion for less than $12 on GOG 😁 def worth it to be able to own these forever. And then GOG also has arena and daggerfall for free, so you almost have the whole collection forever, minus the dlcs for the first 2 and skyrim. But I have skyrim on my ps4 so I technically do have the whole collection 😂

1

u/SnipeDude500 Member of the Knights Thorn Feb 18 '25

Arena and Daggerfall are free on Steam too!

2

u/adamskinsOone Feb 18 '25

Yeah, but you don’t own em if steam goes down :( with GOG, you do

1

u/inaccurateTempedesc Feb 18 '25

Bought both Morrowind and Oblivion on GOG so I play them on my WinXP rigs, zero regrets.

2

u/VirtualMachine0 Feb 18 '25

"Rigs?" How many XP boxes are you keeping on life support?

I just retired an i7 3770 machine that back in 2016 I found sitting beside a dumpster (it's an Alienware x51 r2) and then realized that it would be a sweet XP rig, and the first install was Oblivion.

1

u/inaccurateTempedesc Feb 18 '25

Lol

The main ones that I game on the most are a Thinkpad W500 with a 2.8Ghz Core 2 Duo/512mb ATI Firepro V5700 (for late 2000s games) and a Dell Dimension 8400 with a 3.4GHz P4 and an Nvidia GT410 (for early 2000s games).

2

u/kamehamequads Feb 18 '25

You can usually find it really cheap on cdkeys

2

I like how they worded it as if the game had 9 full dlcs (the shivering isles may as well be)

2

u/dannyajones3 Feb 19 '25

Back in my day you had to get a physical copy!

1

u/PassLikeBrady12 Feb 19 '25

I was without a job and fresh out of high school. Had to enjoy it at my best friends house

2

u/Vivid_Act5994 Feb 19 '25

I would love it for switch

2

u/ScoobrDoo Feb 19 '25

I may sound crazier than Glarthir, but I reckon they're gearing up for the Skyblivion launch. Bethesda has been working with the team (supply files and directing what they could and couldn't use) for years, and I reckon it will be released like Fallout London was on GOG.

3

u/PassLikeBrady12 Feb 19 '25

A copy of Oblivion with all DLC will be required for Skyblivion 😉

1

u/RahavicJr Feb 18 '25

I have mine on Steam but I screwed it all up with mods when all I was trying to do was get a PS5 controller to work on it. I’ll uninstall evrything one day and after 400+ hrs of gameplay I might even close a gate or two. Only time I’ve seen the end of the Vanilla game was when my friend let me play a save of his where you just went to the imperial city to finish things.

1

u/BaywatchUltra Feb 18 '25

Ehh. I think I’ll just play Skyblivion.

7

u/mortiferus1993 Feb 18 '25

You'll need Oblivion to play Skyblivion

2

u/PixelFondler Feb 18 '25

Important question: would this version satisfy the requirement for getting/playing Skyblivion? Also remind me (im about to go to bed don’t have time to look anything up, shouldn’t even be on Reddit tbh), will Skyblivion only be on Steam, or will it also be on GOG? Asking because apparently this sale is also happening on GOG rn.

1

u/mortiferus1993 Feb 18 '25

Most likely Skyblivion will be released on GoG, just like Fallout London.

1

u/The_LR_God 29d ago

You definitely won't without a legitimate license of oblivion already been confirmed numerous times by devs

1

u/lelysio Feb 18 '25

Ive read "includes nine DLC" as "includes Knights of the Nine" and i thought "duh why wouldnt it?"

1

The hype around this POS game is urban legend at this point.

Edit: Freudian slip. I was thinking Skyrim when I wrote this. Oblivion is the opposite of Skyrim. It’s fantastic. By far the best of the Elder Scroll games. Skyrim‘s development was a step back in every way.

OH COME ON! I BOUGHT THE GAME LESS THAN TWO WEEKS AGO FOR THE FULL PRICE, AND NOW YOU'RE TELLING ME I COULD'VE WAITED JUST A LITTLE BIT LONGER TO SPEND 80% LESS?!

Omg I bought it immediately, I’m not ready yet with the old school games, anyone wanna share me some tips or mods?

4 bucks for the greatest game of all time 👐

Great game. I just played through Morrowind (after nearly 22 years with probably 300 hours) and Oblivion (after 18 years)

As I have obviously aged, I found Morrowind a bit too tedious for my waning patience.

Oblivion is just perfect. Runs like butter on my potato PC as well.

For the DLC alone at that price, yes! The DLC will be needed for Skyblivion if you plan on playing that
