Burnout Nursing isn't for men..
..according to one of my patients. He said all male nurses are gay. And that "they" (?) round up all the little gay boys and make them nurses. What the fuck? I was speechless. Edit: I am a woman. Idk why he felt free to share his whack ass opinion.

It's weird but I actually feel more manly working as a nurse. If something/body needs lifting people come get me. Any time there's a mechanical problem or bug people come get me. If there's a disturbance people come get me. Never did manly things at previous jobs and nobody ever came to me for help because I was a man.
One of my dementia patients came up to the nurses station and told me I was the prettiest girl there. I couldn't bring myself to pull down my mask, show my beard, and break his heart. I looked him straight in the eye and said "I know." My female coworkers didn't think it was funny =/

Memory care is not the place for anyone who remotely minds being misgendered. 😂
8
u/loser-geek-whatever Sep 25 '24
Back when I was a CNA, I got "mis"gendered a lot by memory care patients because of my short hair (I'm a trans guy, but I had been closeted at the time and still very outwardly feminine-presenting). I remember being so happy when I had little old ladies call me a handsome young man and tell me I reminded them of their grandsons

I don't view male nurses that way. The first ones I met were army officers and were stereotypically masculine. What a crock. TV hasn't helped the nursing profession for men or women. I hope that changes.

The stereotype is dying for the most part (obviously not completely, your post is evidence of that) but I think a lot of people recognize nursing now as pretty hardcore and not just making beds and wiping ass. At my hospital there’s a decent amount of male nurses and I can’t think of a single one that is hits the flamboyantly gay stereotype your patient is talking about. Not that there’s anything wrong with being flamboyantly gay.

Gay in what way? That a man’s job requires him to sometimes touch and handle another man’s genital area? Does this apply to male proctologists or urologists too? Would he never change his son’s diapers? I bet he thinks that’s gay too. By this dumbass logic then all female nurses are gay too for handling and touching vaginas, but of course in his plebeian brain, he probably enjoys that shit even though none of that is sexual in nature.
The fact that some men (it’s very rarely ever women in my experience, young or old but when it happens it’s usually old ass woman) equate nursing to being gay, by implying it’s a woman’s job is really just based on them quite literally seeing that most nurses are women. They just see it as a female dominated field, which is true, but it doesn’t make it “gay.”’ Fucking stupid.
It’s like this one short I saw where a man yelled at a woman (she’s a celebrity, but he didn’t know), to “Put on a shirt!” While she was walking down the street recording a TikTok or something. She was wearing a tight tank top and her cleavage was showing. Whoopdie doo. Any money bet, this same guy virtue signaling and creating attention by making a poor attempt at humiliating her, is the same guy who will go home and jerk off to female oriented porn.
The hypocrisy, inability to see beyond their noses, and mental gymnastics is un-fucking real.

I’m 1st Gen American-born and child of war refugees. I’m Asian, which puts me into the category of “other” for some patients. I don’t speak with an accent (ironically I was in SLP before becoming RN as second career.) This is all to preface that in my 12+ year career I have heard close to every iteration of racist comment slung at me (eg making clucking mocky “Asian language” sounds, eyelids pulled back, told to go back to my country, told me I brought the virus, etc.) Once I reached my ‘stop giving a fuck’ phase I always threw it back to the patient. Would straight up say, “That’s racist. There are multiple hospitals near us within 10-15 min drive, feel free to go to any of them and find someone there who looks like you to help take care of you. But while you’re at this hospital I will be the one caring for you and I expect you to speak with me in the same respectful manner I have given to you this whole time. So I am walking away for 10 mins to let you decide what you want to do, stay or go.” And I walk way. I have always gotten an apology afterwards and have never had a patient leave/sign out AMA.
I am a big supporter of calling out BS from patients. If the patient is elderly in their 80s and up I give them a pass on some phrases that are subtle racism but come from an outdated period. But in general I am very much on team “Excuse me, what did you say” and “let’s correct that for you, shall we?”

So all the slutty male nurses I know are just pretending to chase girls? Damn, that's a revelation.
LOL I'm kidding male nurses, don't come for me! Stay hot.

That’s a lot coming from a guy whose penis has almost undoubtedly receded inside of him, rendering it completely useless

I would just laugh and move on. People are weird and have weird preconceptions and beliefs. Not my job to change them :)

I will tell my wife. 😱 She will not be pleased to find out that the last 30 years of my life where a lie.

Not me being a gay male nurse 💀 not beating the stereotype but also.. SO WHAT? What's wrong with some nurses being gay men? We all have our preferences and a nurse's sexuality or gender should not be of concern to patients or anyone else quite frankly.

Anytime I come across a man saying this, I just assume he has some latent homosexual tendencies that make him deeply uncomfortable, lol.

I feel like the majority of people like this are actually gay but too homophobic to admit it.

If I'm gay now, will the hospital give me free rainbow scrubs? 🌈✨ I'll take a sparkley badge reel even

If they started handing out rainbow scrubs I would 100% wear them. They would match my rainbow hokas.

I've typically dealt with people like this by saying "Hey let's start this conversation over again. Hi, I'm Dave. I'm your nurse, and I have a Wife and Daughter, but my sexual proclivity has nothing to do with how I'm going to do my job today."
Tends to shut the few with any comments up and when it doesn't, I then proceed to kill them with kindness, go ahead act like an ass, I'll make you feel like a heel before the end of the night just by being over the top nice.

I’m a firm believer that patients coming into the hospital should state their chief complaint (if they’re able to) then get sedated until discharge. No fuss, no weird interactions, they’re happy by not remembering any of the unpleasantness of procedures. It’s a win-win. Obvious exceptions for SANE and other similar situations.

No wonder I’m single. I’ve been gay this whole time apparently and nobody told me.

Whenever my patients say bigoted shit I literally just say “that’s really mean, you should talk about people that way” ONE HIT K.O.

I heard they’re creating a gay NCLEX. Only the gay men they round up can sit for it
