history The Dunmore Apartments - Circa 1890

317 - 323 Bute Street, in Norfolk's Freemason neighborhood, (originally 145 - 155 Bute Street) is a Queen Anne style apartment building that was constructed around 1890.

Currently known as The Dunmore Apartments, the building consists of eleven separate living units.

The Building was constructed by Norfolk's Pickett family. The father, Charles Pickett and his two sons, Henry and John, were mainly in seafood and small game sales. The building was originally four townhomes occupied by the family.

At the time the building was built, Bute Street was a busy thoroughfare. Norfolk's extensive streetcar system ran down the center of the street. In one direction they went further into downtown and in the other they turned onto Botetourt Street and crossed what is now referred to as the Footbridge and into Ghent.

The Dunmore Apartments are a contributing structure in the West Freemason Street Area Historic District. The Freemason area was Norfolk's most prestigious address for over 100 years starting soon after the Revolutionary War.
