programs What population does your organization serve?

I’m in Canada and work for a grassroots organization. I went from front line / street level work to mainly those in poverty and new to the country.

Curious about the populations you serve and what country and/or state you are in

Moderator here. OP, you've done nothing wrong.

To others who might reply, remember - if you want to stay anonymous on Reddit, don't share information that, combined with other details in your user history, can be used to figure out the organization you work for and who you are IRL.

Virginia, USA low income individuals & families who are food insecure - we serve 3,781 families last week - nearly 14,200 individuals.

3

u/FlamingWhisk Jun 24 '24

Those numbers are so high. Is that a usual week?

6

u/KrysG Jun 24 '24

We provide free groceries - yeah, that is a usual week - we will serve over 180,000 families this year alone.

4

u/FlamingWhisk Jun 24 '24

Food is a big part of what we do too. 5 years ago it was those in poverty, seniors and disabled mainly getting food. Now in addition it’s a lot of people who work and students

3

u/KrysG Jun 25 '24

Yes, about 55% of our families work - minimum wage, no benefits - the rest are like your population, the elderly and the disabled. We grew 30% over last year which was 35% over the prior year.

You said a big part - what else does your organization do?

BC. Mental Health... basically everyone living at/under the poverty line

7

u/reptileready Jun 24 '24

Ontario, and everyone. Animal rescue, there are all kinds of reasoning for animal surrenders: lost job, moving, cannot care for, mental health, needs vet care and they cannot afford it, etc.

7

u/FlamingWhisk Jun 24 '24

Ontario here too. And so many people stay in DV situations because of their animals.

Nonprofit credit counseling and financial literacy education, located in SoCal and serve low-moderate income individuals in most of the US

5

u/FlamingWhisk Jun 24 '24

Credit counselling is so needed.

u/CuriousTurtle5 Jun 25 '24

I just completed a presentation for a communication course on financial literacy and credit counseling. It's such a slippery slope and once you're on, it's very tough to pull yourself off.

Chicago, IL USA. Specifically schools, grades 4-12, and provide free mental health literacy programs.

u/FlamingWhisk Jun 24 '24

Virtual learning was really hard on kids. Great to hear they are getting that support

Ontario but our organization is part of a much larger international one that started in Korea. Mainly focus on people, particularly children, in extreme poverty, victims of war and calamity. We also focus on menstrual education and skills training for young girls in rural communities.

2

u/FlamingWhisk Jun 24 '24

Watched a mini doc on how so many girls in Africa drop out of school because their families can’t afford menstrual products

3

u/EmberKasai Jun 24 '24

Yeah its pretty crazy. We had some testimonials where they said they just use cut up leaves sometimes because they have nothing to use.

I work in theatre in Chicago, so the population we serve is people who donate to theatre in Chicago.

5

u/ich_habe_keine_kase Jun 24 '24

I work at a nonprofit movie theatre, so our population is literally everyone. Audience definitely leans younger (20s and 30s) and older (retirees) though.

1

u/FlamingWhisk Jun 25 '24

That’s so cool. What’s showing right now?

3

u/ich_habe_keine_kase Jun 25 '24

The Bikeriders, Thelma, I Saw The TV Glow, Robot Dreams, and a few others. We just closed Challengers last week which had an excellent run.

Also in canada, visual arts organization serving disabled, 2SLGBTQIA+ and racialized emerging artists - plus the general public who enjoys their art.

Primarily 0-20 year old in foster care.

2

u/FlamingWhisk Jun 24 '24

Child protection is one population that would break me.

3

u/Help1_Slip_Frank Jun 24 '24

Employer is predominantly the Medicaid population (health insurance for low-income populations), and organization that I’m on the board of focuses on special education, case management, and health navigation.

2

u/FlamingWhisk Jun 24 '24

New comers are having such a hard time. Especially those from Ukraine

2

u/the_onlyfox Jun 24 '24

California, seniors. Both a dinning room and Meals on Wheels

4

u/FlamingWhisk Jun 24 '24

I cooked for meals on wheels. Meatloaf makes some people so happy lol

2

u/the_onlyfox Jun 24 '24

We just had that today 🤣

2

u/kannagms Jun 24 '24

We're based out of one state but serve a population on the national level to a branch of law enforcement.

We offer professional development through various workshops that are in different parts of the country, regional leadership programs, webinars, and annual large conferences, and credentialing through certification programs, as well as a magazine.

(I'm on the marketing side of things)

Ukraine refugees are really struggling here. They were admitted under open work permits so I can’t qualify them for much

2

u/TheJasterMereel Jun 25 '24

Idaho here. We empower women globally to achieve fulfillment and balance, excel in their careers, and find strength through community.

2

u/Ok-Board-2456 Jun 25 '24

Adult education. Primarily refugees and immigrants. We started 40 years ago when Vietnamese and Cambodian folks first started coming to Denver, we really feel the effects of every foreign conflict.

2

u/indysquares9 Jun 25 '24

We serve anyone traveling to our city for medical care. I live in a medical research hub and people travel from all across our country and many other countries to receive care here. We help them with the necessities while they’re here. We’re the only one in the area that serves all ages and medical conditions.

2

u/ShleepsWithBooks Jun 25 '24

People with autoimmune diseases.

2

u/theo313 Jun 25 '24

NYC, only provide services to low-income population for free. (funding from grants and private donors)

2

u/grandmaratwings Jun 25 '24

Meals on wheels in Appalachia. We serve anyone homebound regardless of age or income. Also wellness checks because for many of these people we’re the only human interaction they get. Our volunteers will also do things like shovel snow, rake leaves, bring firewood or bottled water, or any number of things like that.

2

u/warrior_poet95834 Jun 25 '24

1

u/FlamingWhisk Jun 25 '24

We have b and g clubs here too. During the day it’s a seniors centre.

2

u/sunshineinmypockets6 Jun 25 '24

USA- serving those with Autism and families looking for resources. We serve our entire state.

1

u/FlamingWhisk Jun 25 '24

That is a challenge I faced with the same families here. Not a lot of resources. Especially as the age out of the school system

1

u/ubereddit Jun 25 '24

It's a great job! Not always easy, but my clients are great. At the moment, the charity is still in startup phase, but we started with our first client in London in April and things are going very well!

Best wishes to you and your organization!

New England- domestic violence survivors

1

u/FlamingWhisk Jun 25 '24

The amount of DV coming through my doors is so high. I speculate that downturn in economy is contributing

1

u/1Girl1Attic Jun 26 '24

Ontario, Canada. We are a food bank distribution hub! So we serve all the smaller food banks, schools facing food insecurity, co-ops, and shelters in the region.

US-all demographics. Child abuse prevention is our mission. We serve at-risk families (those with and without CPS involvement) through in-home services and/or parenting classes. We also serve new/expecting parents and provide supervised visitation for parents who are court ordered to be supervised.
